"A novel of sorcery and the ultimate pagan sacrifice," about thirteen people shipwrecked off the coast of Portugal in the 12th century, who must endure a forty-day trek to survive. "Harrowing on the physical level, this is also a spiritual struggle, for faith in the Christian God is at best tentative, and hate and fear and lust prevail."
Barbara Jefferis AM was the author of eleven books but she is best known for the award set up in her honour. The Barbara Jefferis Award was set up by her husband John Hinde with a $1million bequest to create an annual prize of at least $35,000 AUD. It is awarded to "the best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society." In 1986, Jefferis was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to literature, and in 1995, she was recognised with an Australia Council Emeritus Award.
I actually loved this book. And reading it again, it is very very good. Rarely, well written, rarely, as in not often do you find this high quality writing. The story telling, and sense of place and time - superb!
I read most of this but finally skipped to the end. This is OK if you like a Feel Bad book but I really disliked this book. Pointless. Attempted in 2008. Because Half Angel by the same author is one of my favorite books ever, I bought 3 other books by the author and hated each of them, 2 (including this one) weren't terrible, just I didn't like the story. And there didn't seem to be any of the sensitivity to characters, humour, or hopefulness that was in Half Angel. it was like a different person wrote the other books. Very, very disappointing.
