Midnight Warriors #1

Parallel Attraction

Rate this book
Finding a mate is the farthest thing from alien warrior Jared Bennett's mind. After years of exile on Earth, he's almost developed a time travel weapon. One that will hopefully bring peace to his own people. But a chance encounter with scientist Kelsey Wells ignites a scorching desire that overshadows his people's war. To Kelsey, Jared's heritage is exotic and alarming - nothing like the logical, scientific facts of her own world. But despite her fears, she can't deny the heated response of her body every time the magnetic leader comes near. When an enemy from the future arrives, Jared realizes that his desire to mate with Kelsey may destroy them all.

Surely he can't bond with her--not now, when his doing so might destroy not only his own world, but Earth, as well. The lovers face one inescapable fact: Time can save them, as much as it can destroy them

I haven't read very much science fiction romance, but this is a good one to read to get into the genre. It was a bit slow in parts, but a very good story all the same.

I fell in love with Jared early on in this book, when he was fourteen years old, in fact. He is everything a king should be: noble, good-hearted, self-sacrificing, strong, intelligent, and of iron-willed disposition. Yet there is also a gentleness to him, a very kind nature. It is very evident why his people and the soldiers in his regiment are so devoted to him. To me he was a worthy leader who inspired the admiration of his people. I love heroes that can be loving and kind without feeling that this destroys their ability to be a tough, strong man. That is why I adore beta heroes so much. Jared isn't a beta hero exactly. He's more of a mix of an alpha and beta, which is a great combination. He is in touch with his feelings, but also a proven warrior. Sigh! Not only that, but he is very tall, strapping, but lean, with black hair and black eyes. I like that Jared has the looks of a Southern Asiatic/Northern African, or a Native American, with deep copper-colored skin, high-cheekbones, and almond-shaped eyes. He sounded totally yummy to me (fanning myself). Ah, I just loved this guy.

Kelsey was also a great heroine. She wasn't one of those, I'll fight my love for the hero because I can't fall in love, it would make me vulnerable types. She gives Jared her heart completely, and even though he doesn't reveal everything at once, she allows her love and trust for him to lead the way. It's refreshing to see a heroine who can be womanly and loving, without having to be prickly and rigid in her sense of self-protection. And with a couple like Jared and Kelsey, it's the best union, because Jared loves her so much, he'd cut his heart out before he'd hurt her. And Kelsey would lay her life down for him, but also retains her sense of self. She had a strength to her, but also a softness, like a live oak tree, which can live for many years and endure the harsh elements, but retains its beauty. She's tall, pale-skinned, and beautiful, but natural-looking, with long, curly-red hair that Jared loved to play with. Kelsey will be a great queen, although she's bound to be confused with learning all the aspects of her husband's dual cultures. (I know I would).

I found this to be a very romantic book, even from the first pages. The love connection between Jared and Kelsey is so intense and passionate. I just sighed my way through this book. I don't think I've seen very many couples who are so in love with each other as Jared and Kelsey are. Their intimate moments were fiery and intense, and the aspects of Jared's dual nature as a King and Royal of two different races play a very important role. There a very strong fated to mated vibe in this story, so for readers who don't care for that, you might find that a turn off. As for me, I love the fated to be mated storyline, so I was a happy camper.

The path of true love doesn't run smooth, so there are some issues that need to be dealt with. Jared's people have been at war with another race bent on genocide for many years, so there is a threat to the king and his chosen lifemate that remains very evident in this story. But the main focus is on the relationship between Kelsey and Jared (which is a good thing).

The cultures introduced into this story can be a bit confusing at times, and it was a little hard to keep up with some of those aspects. But I do have to admire Ms. Knight for creating this intriguing premise, and populating it with complex characters that you become interested in. At times, I felt that the narrative ran too long, and seemed to get where it was going very slowly. It might be the fact that reading science fiction can tend to be dry for me at times. I like fantastical elements much more. It could also be the fact that Knight is a new author for me, and I have to get used to her writing style. For that reason, I couldn't give this book five stars. If the passages that were too wordy had been a little more concise, this easily could have been a five star book.

Despite the dry moments, she didn't really do the 'Star Trek' thing where the science fiction gets way too political and technical and leaves me yawning. Don't get me wrong, I am a serious science fiction movie geek and I consider myself a 'Trekkie', but I like the action to keep moving. I don't get into the sitting around and discussing political factions, philosophy of the future and the interactions between alien races, and technical stuff about how the various machines work. Just lay the foundation for the futuristic world and populate it with interesting characters, and keep the action moving, and I'm a happy sci-fi geek. I think Ms. Knight mostly succeeded with this. She had enough technical, social, and political world-building to make her world credible, but not too bogged down. Just a small issue with the long, drawn-out narratives in this book. So I am definitely signed up to continue this series. I hope to learn more about the worlds at war and their people, and to see Jared's companions, Scott, Thea, and Annika find love and to see this war end. Also I would like to see more of this great couple Jared and Kelsey, whose love story captivated me so much.

For a science fiction romance neophyte, I do recommend Parallel Attraction. I think you will enjoy it, as I did.

I’m not entirely sure what to say The idea behind the book was good, as was the first few chapters. But there are just so many Issues I have, that make it nearly impossible for me to really like it:

The beginning (which I realized at the end, was the best part) felt rushed : We’re introduced to a multitude of characters, but don’t really get to know any of them So they’re later actions and reactions make no sense.

Then there’s the relationship between our Hero and heroine.. . . I don’t know what else to say, other then it wasn’t very satisfying They met, and they fell in love.. I think it was supposed to be one of those life mate/bonding type relationships that are so prevalent in paranormals these days, but our authoress wasn’t quite able to pull it off Later in the book we’re supposed to believe they’re desperately in love, but I just couldn’t feel it

Then, later in the story, a new character is introduced, and in given center stage for far too long It was at this point (about halfway through the book) that I had to start pushing myself to finish!

And It doesn’t really get any better There are a number of things ignored ( like the heroine's life before meeting the Hero... apparently she's so insignificant, that even though she more or less disappears from her old life, no one notices, really?) And there are so many story lines just thrown in, it was almost as if the author didn’t have enough material, and just wanted to make the book longer It feels like a series following Kelsey and Jared (our h and H) through their lives, but rather then spread out through a half dozen books, it's condensed into just one short novel

On the positive side, I loved the blushing Hero (though as an alien king, he seemed remarkably human) and that’s pretty much all I loved I wanted to like this series, but honestly I can’t even see myself picking up the next book!

So I'm so on the fence between 1 and 2 stars. My 70% review still stands below but I'll come back to write a spoilers review with reasons. NOT the least being that this ends in the middle of... something? Yep, a cliffhanger that is not really understood because the world and war are not understood, even after a whole book we don't understand even why? Well why anything? Who, sure, why, not at all. And oh, my, god, are you kidding on the letter and the ending? Why did I read all the drivel in between if it doesn't even play a part? Crap this sucked, OK decided,... it would've been 2 stars, for the OK beginning but the up in the air ending brought that down to suck! And damn, I have several more of these books on my shelf. Donation.

My synopses

This world is so underdeveloped for a war, time travel, different alien species and abilities, that we are left just wondering... about everything, even what the hell was that about. The characters are not poorly drawn, they are rounded and interesting, but the story just is so sparse and unfulfilling that it ended up being a totally dud after a promising beginning. It was a disappointment because it had started good.

------------------------------------------
70% update
Wow, at 50% this takes a big turn into la la land. It tries to become plot driven and the romance is gone. Problem is the romance is built in the first 1/2 and the connection that you just barely have is broken by boredom of world building, now at 50%. You get a kidnapping and politics and time travel and war and one side, the other side. A traitor that you've never met, so he has to be built up too. Then the enemy and his obvious betrayal. I now no longer give two flying fracks about the romance, it has been ruined by this ridiculous build up and plot. It would be a mediocre at best urban fantasy. The romance up to the plot turn was pretty good. I was thinking a 3 or 4 for the PNR, now... it is heading for the 2 star category. From 1/2 way to 3/4, a quarter of the book, you are told totally random things that don't give you any idea of possibilities or what truly is happening. You are on a la la land roller coaster ride that the only reason the main characters don't die is by luck, pure fracking luck. And the premise for the betrayal is ludicrous. Ruined a perfectly good romance that was building. **sigh**

This book was a pleasant surprise. I almost didn't read it, because I'm not big on sci-fi or alien romance. However, this book was so beautifully written it drew me in.

I find the characters well-developed, the relationship very sweet and poignant, and the plot intriguing enough to keep me reading, and wondering what will happen next.

Definitely, I will be looking for the next book.

I gave this 60 pages to convince me it wasn't drivel, and actually gave it another 40 just in case. Nope. What a waste of trees. It was like Sweet Valley High in space. The "hero" returns in his 30's after meeting a girl as a teen. He's supposedly a deposed king but he stutters, makes all kinds of bad decisions, and acts like an adolescent. The "heroine" gives me a toothache just reading about her smarmy sweetness. Where's the toothpaste, and do I have a brush long enough to reach my brain? Sorry, life's too short to read bad books. Good thing I borrowed it from the library and didn't pay any money for it!

Parallel Attraction is a scifi romance.

The book had a promising start. Teenager Kelsey met a boy and they became friends over a few days, but he left suddenly.

With her memories of Jared altered, the adult Kelsey meets him once more. They are strongly attracted to one another, but Kelsey is taken from him by his enemies.

Although I liked the start of this book, the story then raced on with plot holes and scenes which needed more development to make them believable. I'm afraid I DNF at around 40%

Definitely above average. It is listed as a paranormal romance, but this isn't what I consider paranormal. It is more alternate reality, or even sci-fi rom. The plot development was good, the pacing better than average, and the character development solid. I loved the intersection (parallel) time lines. What could have been an overworked storyline was used quite effectively. Plus the romance was wonderful. Overall a very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next in the series.

There were some parts of this book were, frankly, slightly confusing but as weird as this will sound, I actually enjoyed the oddness of it. The concept is that Jared met Kelsey many years ago when they were teenagers. Neither of them remember this because there memories were erased. Jared is the King of an alien race, but unlike some of his people, he holds many 'selves' with two core ones. One of the them is pure energy and light and the other looks like a humanoid male. Kelsey is human. When they first met, it was considered a disaster and there memories were erased.
Jared, and some of his people, are stuck on earth building ships and essentially, by the insistence of his people. hiding from the war that has raged on his home planet for some time. Fearing he is near death, Jared inserts some key information his people need inside her mind to keep it from the enemy. In doing so, he bonds with her thus bringing back their memories of falling in love.
Jared is surrounded by a group of characters--Thea, his first cousin who everyone wants him to marry and who is deeply in love with him, and his friend and head general, Scott, as well as two twin sisters Annika and Anna who seem to act in an advisor capacity.
Suddenly, this person named Marcus shows up, kidnaps Kelsey (this is where it gets confusing) and we find out he's from another time, sent back by the opposition leader to steal the info from her mind and kill her. Turns out Marcus, an empath, spent so much time in the future around Jared and Kelsey that he falls in love with Kelsey, tries to kill her, and Jared exiles him. He then turns on Jared. This is where the book gets kind of confusing. Marcus changes his mind, tries to save them instead, fails, Jared and Kelsey die, and Marcus moves back in time again, killing his 'self' that shows up to get Kelsey and leaves a note for J and K telling them what will happen.
Also, there is this whole idea that Jared needs to 'cycle' or have a fertile time which he has never had.
A lot is left undone, including J and K ever reading the note that Marcus leaves them but I'm anxious to read the next book to see how it is dealt with.
The writing is good--really good--and I loved Jared, his two selves, and their love story.
Great book.

I should have read this book a long time ago! This paperback has been on my shelf waiting to be read for a few years. Leaving the e-reader behind, I took this one with me on vacation this summer and finally got to read it.

I'm always happy to find a good Sci-fi romance. One with both a good plot and strong characters. Parallel Attraction fits the bill.

Unbeknownst to us Earthlings, our world has been the stage for an intergalactic battle. Jared, the Refarian king, exiled on Earth, has been fighting a battle for his people for all of his adult life. Fleeing from the enemy, Jared is forced to hide the key to a game-changing weapon in the mind of Kelsey in a process that binds the two together.

As Jared and Kelsey grow closer, the demands of his people strive to keep them apart. In the meantime, a visitor from the future threatens to destroy the Refarians before they have a chance to take advantage of their new weapon.

This story is part intrigue, part action and a lot of romance. I enjoyed it all. The romance between Jared and Kelsey is sweet yet intense. It is imbedded in the story of the Refarians struggle against the Antousians, complete with a secondary caste of characters that complete the story.

This is not a simple plot. You do need patience and persistence to appreciate the story. In fact, I started and stopped reading this once because the opening chapter is about teenagers, YA not being what I enjoy reading. I'm glad I picked it up again, because the novel fast forwards to the adult versions of Jared and Kelsey and that is where things get interesting. Still, it is a complex story that will reward you well in the end with a satisfying conclusion - to part 1. It is good enough to stand on it's own. But because of the story and the characters developed in the book, I am enticed to read the next book in the series. I hope to learn more about the Refarian/Antousian conflict as well as revisit some of the memorable characters in this story.

I really did love this book, I loved Jared and Kelsey and their relationship. Jared he's not from here per say, and his ways are erm... unusual, "there," he said when he was finished. He gave a satisfied sound of approval as he studied her. "Yes, you wear my stone well." He's fiercely loyal and protective, "he wanted a relationship with me, but only on his terms" she clarified, laughing softly. "And I was willing...for a while. Until he hurt me." He felt an irrepressible flash of fury: That any man might have hurt his bondmate awakened the warrior in him. His hands clenched at his sides, his full body tensed and it was all he could do to suppress an audible growl of protection." I mean he likes to make sure all their parts work together, "I said, it's important that my anatomy meet-" he paused, eyes sparkling as he unsnapped the fly of her jeans - "all human requirements." And the boy is not shy in saying his wants and needs, "Kelsey." He panted in her ear, stroking his fingers beneath the soft curve of her bottom until he found her wet heat. "I need to join again, Kelsey. I need to bond anew." And he's uncomfortable with some things, "because I don't want to spend...my seed...myself...outside of you." He gasped hungrily, pulling her scent into his body. "I want inside. Outside is...good....but..." He groaned at his inability to express himself in human words."

Pretty standard, though definitely more PNR than Sci-fi. Those interested in complex, alien-world-building will likely be disappointed. For readers searching for a romance in which the hero happens to be an alien but not "too alien" Parallel Attraction will probably be more your speed.

Nothing about the book really stood out for me. The steamy scenes were appropriately steamy and the action was appropriately "action-y." The time travel aspect was interesting but at the end of the book when it became apparent that . I suppose the reader learns something about the characters' future-selves, but the characters don't and so they remain static throughout the story. I was left with a feeling of "so... what was all that meant to accomplish?"

Ms. Knight writes well and I did like the characters in the story. I probably won't actively seek out the second book in this series but if it crosses my radar as a part of a sale, etc than I would probably pick it up.

This one was definitely a low side of the three. Sadly there was soooo much potential in this series with the awesome characters and a pretty decent sounding back-story. Sadly it falls very of short of what I was expecting. There was way too much wishy washy bi-polar thoughts bouncing back and forth from all the characters. There was an also way too much weirdness without enough back-story to explain why thing were happening the way they were. Don't get me wrong I’m all for expanding the imagination, but without all the little details this story just didn't live up to its potential for me. I love this author and was seriously hooked on her series about King Leonides and his immortal warriors and was hoping this series would be great too. I’ll still read the next one since it's on my shelves but if it doesn’t get a lot better that will be the end of this series for me.
The only thing going for the series in my opinion was that the men were hott and the sex was pretty good and often.

I picked up this book because it's sci-fi romance and because the author is an agent and I was curious to see what kind of book she'd write. She writes just fine, but I couldn't give this book more than three stars. When I bought this book, I thought it was a stand alone nove, but as I crossed the halfway point, I kept getting the feeling that the second half of the book was just a setup for sequels. There were two separate POVs that were thrown in in the last fifty pages or so. That bothered me because those characters were minor. I didn't want to read about them; I wanted to read about Kelsey and Jared. I would have given this book a higher ranking if the author had cut the access/set-up stuff and just stuck with the main story. But then, the book would have only been a hundred pages long.

I've had this one in my TBR pile for a long time. I can't believe I waited this long to finally read it. From the beginning, without giving away any spoilers, I was rooting for Jared and Kelsey to get together. Jared is a hero that a reader can really get into in my opinion. I would've liked a bit more background info on him, and there were a few things mentioned that felt like filler, but overall I enjoyed the world building, the romance between Jared and Kelsey, and really feel that the other characters- Scott, Thea, Anika etc, really added some depth to the story. I'm hoping that they have their stories told in the other books in that follow.

Parallel attraction was an enjoyable read. Aliens and time travel, what's not to love? I can't hide it; these are probably my two favorite themes in sci-fi and I was happy to find both in the same novel.
The prologue immediately sets the mood. From the beginning, the author makes you feel with the characters. Even when the antagonist comes into play, you get to learn of his motives, so you can't help but understand him also.
Although it's a series and there is one tiny thing that didn't get the 'final' attention I would have liked, it can be read as a stand alone. I'll definitely read the sequels.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP).

What I liked about this story was the relationship between Jared and Kelsey. It was very different and interesting. We are talking closeness on every level here! This story could really go anywhere because of the different facets the author added and time travel helps storylines.

Jared’s very hot! I love warrior/king scenarios makes the guy very manly. It could have given a little more info on the Refarian home planet and more of his background regarding his parents. Maybe that info is in the later books, which I plan on reading soon. Loved this book!

Love Found In a Time of War

3.25 Stars

This was an overall enjoyable selection chosen in the effort to continue my exploration of the sci-fi romance subgenre. I felt this was as a decent start to a series where introduced to the different races and characters assumed to populate the rest of the books. The story’s flow is a little slow and confusing at times as you jump through different points on the timeline.

The attraction between the main characters felt genuine, though the romance moves quickly it still did not feel forced. I liked the set up of the pair having a chance meeting in youth that was the spark to a future relationship. It was a nice touch.

If you love paranormal romance that's out of this world, this is the one for you. Kelsey Wells met Jared Bennett, when they were teenagers in Wyoming. She was human, and he was an alien from a planet, who needs to mate and have a heir. He's also king. When he disappears, their memory was erased. Years later, they meet each other, recovering the love they had, and an attraction that forced them to be together. But there's others who wants them to be apart, and enemies who wished them destroyed. When they defeated the odds, they became one and share an endless love. What a beautiful story.

I really wanted to like this book, especially as sci-fi romance is a hard genre to find in the first place. However it was just not as good as I'd hoped. The instant attraction when the hero and heroine were young was cute but seemed a little much for their age. When they got older the relationship seemed a little forced too, even with the whole 'bond/mated' relationship they suddenly have. Oh well.

I absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the start. It was really nice to see less of a he-man alpha male as the main character. A little vulnerability never hurt anyone!

Forgot I tried to read this already ; )
I did skim through it and it gave me a headache with all the looping around and false starts and ends and the bad guy who isn't a bad guy and the bad guy who is OTT. Then there's the whole Thea thing which seemed to be added just to add some romantic tension. Yet I didn't feel the love between the MCs. They were like luke warm until it was OTT love (especially him).

Basically I think this author is not my cuppa. Moving on.

I received this book from the author and the Lovers of Paranormal group in exchange for a honest review.

Background: Jared (the Refarian King and leader of the rebellion) is exiled on Earth for his protection. The Refarians are fighting the Antousians. The Refarians have hidden sensitive materials on Earth.

My Thoughts: After reading about 250 pages, I was ready to give this book only 2 stars. As you have read in my previous reviews, the fated mates theme is not my favorite. Too often, the hero and heroine meet and instantly are deeply in love. I don't find that terribly realistic. I prefer to have the hero and heroine have a build-up in their relationship. In this book, the hero and heroine do express their undying love pretty early in the book, but somehow the author pulled it off. I was kept interested in the storyline throughout mostly because of new circumstances that arose.

I liked the hero. He was a loyal, trustworthy, and kind gentleman. The heroine was sometimes TSTL. For instance, when she first meets the hero in Yellowstone National Park she is alone with him. She never was taught to beware of strangers.

Favorite Characters: Marco is a conflicted character. Inside him he struggles between doing the right and wrong thing. At one point, he is confronted as to what to do and then realizes that he never truly left his past self behind.

Scott Dillon is Jared's(the hero) right-hand man and his friend. He is also an Antousian and is fighting with the Refarians against the Antousians. I felt sorry for him. He does not feel that he fits in. I hope he finds someone who loves him and accepts him.

Science Fiction Aspect: I am a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, but was a little confused about the mitres. This should have been explained earlier in the story. I do realize with science fiction that sometimes you have to take things at face value and not ask questions.

Story: Kelsey(the heroine) is in Yellowstone and comes upon Jared. This occurs when they are both teenagers. They form a connection and meet each other for several days. Eventually, Jared's transport comes and he has to leave. Jared's memory is erased for his protection.

Years later, Jared is shot down by the USAF and meets Kelsey again. He is injured and passes sensitive data into her brain. After a few days, he goes to see her to retrieve the data. He persuades her to come back to his camp. Once there, they both realize they belong together. Shortly thereafter, Kelsey is kidnapped by an unforeseen traitor.

The rest of the book deals with Jared and Kelsey's relationship. Also, hidden natures and secrets are revealed. The book ends on a cliffhanger. I will definitely read the next book in the series.
I hope that Scott and Marco get their own books.

Overall, a good start to a science fiction romance series.

Excellent

I was totally captivated with this story. I loved the world the author created and other species. And the bending of time, those scenes were well done. I look forward to reading more of this series.

3 1/2 STARS *** This review is based on the 2013 revised ebook edition ***

The first book in the Parallel series is a fascinating alien romance that keeps readers on their toes.

Alien warrior Jared Bennett has spent years in exile on Earth developing a weapon that will alter the fabric of time and hopefully bring peace to his own people. The last thing on his mind is finding a mate, but a chance encounter with scientist Kelsey Wells ignites a scorching desire far more consuming than talks of rebellion. Jared’s heritage is exotic and alarming to Kelsey but despite her fears she can’t deny the heated response of her body. Jared struggles with a shocking family secret that keeps him from claiming Kelsey as his own, but a visitor from the future escalates the battle for Jared’s people. Forcing the lover’s to face one inescapable fact: Time can save them, as much as it can destroy him.

This steady paced plot keeps the readers on the edge of their seat with suspense, action and romance. The author brings the intriguing story to life with vivid imagery and details that capture the reader’s imagination. The story opens up the reader’s mind to the possibilities of visitors from other worlds living amongst us and keeps us intrigued with their differences and similarities. The characters are strong and compelling and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.
The attraction between Kelsey and Jared burns hot and the sex scenes explode with hot and steamy passion. The author conveys the emotions and personalities of the characters with a vibrant intensity that makes it easy for the readers to relate to them and understand their motivations.

While there were a couple of spots where I felt the story sort of dragged, overall the story was entertaining and enjoyable. The world and characters created by the author is captivating and certainly worth reading continuing to reading the next books in the series and discover how these characters and their stories develop.

I have read several books by this author already so I do so enjoy her writing. It is not often I will read a book twice because there are so many I have not read and so little time that when I chose this one I thought I had read it but wasn't sure it was a few years ago if I had. Sure enough I had but since I so enjoy her writing and really liked this book it was well worth the second time around. The storyline draws you in right away with characters that grab ahold of you. Kesley is a alpha type character but she would have to be to match up with alien king Jared. Their first meeting is so sweet when they are younger but one of Jared's people steals it away from them. So when time and space brings them back together this time older they now have a better chance but it would seem that love had it's way and they were not to be kept apart after all. The author takes you along on a drama filled adventure where love heats up between the two that where they are from is not a barrier. She accepts him for who he is and he loves her even more for that. That is the great thing about love is sees to the core of things. Interesting happenings go on danger and intrigue filled that has you on the edge sometimes gripping the novel. Rivalry also a factor in here because she is not the only one who loves him and she finds she is also loved by another. Not a hum drum read for sure and that is the joy of this one. You keep going along in this though regardless of what is happening only wanting one thing for sure (gift of a good author) that love is the winning factor here and that they will beat all odds and be together for their lifetime. Excellent beginning to a wonderful series that after this one you must surely want to know what happens next. Received a arc for a honest review. LOP(lovers of the Paranormal)

'Parallel Attraction' is a great sci-fi romance and a quick, easy read that will probably appeal to people who like sci-fi romance with little sci-fi.

Kelsey Wells and Jared Bennett meet when they are young teenagers but because of his alien, kingly status, both Jared's and Kelsey's minds are erased and they forget that they ever met each other. Years later they meet again and they feel the exact same attraction but is it safe for Kelsey to fall in love with an alien King?

The plot was way too rushed, it had the whole 'insta-love' thing going on which some readers enjoy very much but it isn't for me! Because of the rushed romance many other things were rushed too like Kelsey and Jared's background even though we find out little bits slowly throughout the novel it would have been nice to know when they met the second time. It was hard to empathise with the characters because we didn't get much character development. Kelsey was a good heroine, she was strong yet vulnerable at the same time but I didn't feel connected towards her much as I thought she was a bit weird for following an alien to his spaceship. Jared was kind-hearted, strong, lovely and everything you would want in a good hero/King, I think it was great that he was a brave warrior who was also quite emotional with the love of his life and quite vulnerable too.

The relationship between the two was very intense and passionate, I thought Ms Knight handled the balance between Jared being a warrior/King and him just being Kelsey's love brilliantly.

All in all, a great book for avid romance readers, just don't go in with high expectations for some serious sci-fi!

I first read this book a couple of years ago and I am so pleased to see it finally being rereleased for those of us who use ebooks. It was my very first sci fi type romance and opened my eyes to a whole new genre. Aliens hiding out on Earth may be a popular theme in many books recently but not many will be as well written and sensual as this. Deidre Knight is without doubt at the top of her game.
Jared's people are at war and have been for a long time. Jared is their King but he's living in exile here on Earth with his rebel forces and it just might finally be time for the tide to well and truly turn. He's unafraid to perform his duty and ready to claim victory.
Unfortunately Jared is injured and the person that finds him is Kelsey and right from the start the attraction between the couple is off the charts! Kelsey wants to heal his injuries but what she will do is heal his heart.
I don't wish to give spoilers so will say that this was a wonderful romance and it's so very easy to like the two central characters. It's no straightforward sci fi romp though as time itself plays a part in this book so I feel it straddles multiple genres. It's quite a complicated world that Ms Knight is building here and I'm sure that with subsequent books the readers will be well and truly sucked into it.
Loved it. Strong world building, interesting characters and a believable romance. I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading more. A fabulous piece of pure escapism and recommended to my fellow romantics!

I got this book free for do a honest review (LOP)

Let me start off by saying that though i gave it as a 3 star rating it is still good. This being the fifth series I have read dealing with aliens ( Krinar Chronicles, Midnight Breed, Light Within me,Alien Huntress Novels) it doesnt have as much intensity that I imagined it would have like the others.

That being said. The book was good and i did really like it. I found that the beginning how they met as young teens to be the sweetest kind of like the book started out as Young adult and matured to Adult. Jared character was a very strong character and he was very likable as he was selfless for those he loved. Not only was he selfless for his people but he was strong minded about what he wanted without being a control freek. Kelsey was a likeable character as well and had a sweet personality to her. Though it would have been nice for their to be some tension between the two instead of instant acceptance and magnetism. The story plot is diffinity very intriguing and the alien species interesting. Despite how slow i felt it went it was trully an enjoyable read. For those people who like Sci Fi romances i would diffinitly suggest this book.

***Spoiler Alert***
I was hoping that near the end though that either Jared or Kelsey would read the letter that Marco out and my curiousity of what he wrote would be satisified so when it didnt show them reading it i was a bit disappointed.
