Forced to land on an unknown world, Whitney and Rafe find themselves among a group of feral humanoids who seem to be about as smart as house cats. Soon they are mistaken for pets by the huge aliens who live on the planet and taken into captivity as a "mating pair." But what will happen when Rafe and Whitney actually have to mate in order to escape? You'll have to read, Pairing With the Protector to find out...
Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing. Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for it. To her delight, she found that it was actually possible to get money for having a dirty mind and she has been writing paranormal and Sci-fi erotica steadily ever since.
Let's see. The plot might have been interesting if they landed on a prehistoric planet where the Tuskers would never guess Tweedles were sentient. But it was like a 20th century Earth, with Elephant people... sigh. We know our pets have minds, although this author doesn't know that, apparently. So why would the Tuskers think speaking is a disease?
Secondly, pets ARE sentient and they aren't stupid. Yes, they are more instinctual than humans and all, but the way this author is linking speaking with sentience is just wrong. So non-speaking tweedles are dumb pets with no mind and don't deserve to be saved? They had no emotion, no thought, just instinct, yet the author compared them to a human's pet... I seriously doubt this author has pets as any pet owner can tell you, they are curious, emotional, intelligent beings even if they don't speak or solve math problems. That this author thinks cats and dogs are mindless beasts really disturbs me.
Lastly, there was no emotional connection between Whitney and Rafe AT ALL. First, I did not like Rafe. He was not just wounded but an inconsiderate jerk. Don't even try to tell her why you don't want to bond. Plus, he had NO interest. Whitney also was basically sexually harassing Rafe, since he had no interest yet she kept flirting and pushing him.
Sigh. I have to agree with another reviewer who said these are like an assembly line of scifi smut with no soul being churned out fast as possible and NO consideration for quality. I'd rather wait for a GOOD book than read much more of these half-baked ones.
I loved the relationship between Whitney and Rafe. Whitney is so sweet and caring always singing and looking at the bright side of things. Rafe is a beast kindred who vows to never get close to a female again. Whitney is just the right woman to see past this hurt warriors heart. The adventure these to embark on will have you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed this book and I just can't get enough of the kindred.
Whitney and Rafe Spoilerish content to justify rating
Rafe is Whitney’s protector assigned to guard her on trips to explore new planets. Shes a biologist. They’ve been working together already for SIX MONTHS and nothing has happened. She flirts with him and he ignores it. He’s hung up on the fact he was MATED BEFORE and his mate was murdered by a wild animal. So of course, he wants to fight being attracted to the heroine of this story. The h, Whitney is African American and overweight, she admits it herself, as many of the characters are in this series. And yes, she’s named after Whitney Houston and can apparently sing jut like her. She’s overall a happy personality. She flirts with the H, but he doesn’t return the advances. So que them crashing onto a random planet with giant elephant aliens who keep humans or “tweedles as they’re calling on that planet as pets. These alien elephants are supposed to be sentient but when a tweedle has the ability to talk they call it a Speaking Disease and kill them! How the heck did they not realize they were sentient?! It was just getting too stupid. So of course Rafe and Whitney are caught after crashing and mistaken as these pet human like beings. They are THEN KEPT AS PET LIKE PEOPLE KEEP SMALL RODENTS IN CAGES AND WITH WHEELS TO RUN ON ETC. So there’s a lot of pet keeping chatter in this book. It’s basically all this book is. Then there’s the elephant owners who drug the female tweedles food to make them get turned on to go into a breed frenzy. They go to a pet show and have to breed display in front of all the elephants. This is much later in the book and the first true S scene. It was decent. But then after they bond and she can sense Rafe and when he tries to explain why he didn’t want to bond she goes bananas and doesn’t even give him the chance to explain. She ends up P and isn’t even planning to tell him!!! Who does that? Who ends up P and then doesn’t even tell the father, only because you ASSUME he didn’t want you? That’s not fair to the children because he might want them. And he has a right to know. So of course they work thing out and he did want her. She just didn’t give him the chance to explain before she flipped out. This series has REALLY went down hill.
Pairing with the Protector, the latest Kindred Tales novel by Evangeline Anderson begins with her usual intro to the main characters. We learn that Dr. Whitney Washington, a Xeno-zoologist, has been invited by Sylvan, the head of the Kindred High Council, to work in a special program that finds non-sentient creatures for the genetics labs on the Mother Ship. Going to strange alien planets could be dangerous work, so she is assigned a Protector to guard her and keep her from harm. Rafe, a beast kindred warrior, has been given that responsibility. We also learn in those first few chapters that each thinks the other is attractive, but Rafe has a dark secret that stops him from ever acting on his feelings. Then, after leaving the Mother Ship to begin their next assignment, everything changes. Not just the story line or characters, but everything! We’re thrown into a roller coaster of a ride that ends in a Halloween nightmare. Trapped on an unknown world with their ship needing repairs, the first creatures they see are humanoid, but with the intelligence level of a cat. As Rafe is working on repairing the ship, both are captured by one of the indigenous people of this planet and end up in a cage, trapped as a mating pair of pets. Used to being larger than others he encounters, Rafe discovers he can’t protect Whitney against the gigantic aliens who see the two as small breeding pets. All our previous expectations of giants are tossed off our roller coaster. We’ve seen Giants in previous Kindred Tales, but these aliens are so much larger that it was difficult for me to envision them. Rafe must keep trying to get them free, however, and try to find the way home. Whitney is not the weak princess just waiting to be rescued, but a strong woman ready to take on the challenges of trying to get free, but their chances are very limited. Evangeline Anderson is one of my favorite romance authors, and, having read all of the Kindred Tales novels, Pairing with the Protector did not disappoint me. Yes, I do recommend it. Yes, I loved the setting and the adventure of it all. Yes, I enjoyed the steamy scenes and the comic ones. Yes, I would read it again (and will!) And yes, this author is like a fine wine, getting better all the time!
Rafe and Whitney are set to embark on a mission to study animal life on an unexplored planet in the universe when the universe interferes and they find themselves stuck on an alien world inhabited by sentient beings. Only, instead of getting the help they need, they find themselves caged and forced to perform for fear of being separated forever. Can Rafe and Whitney survive on the alien planet? Will they escape? What will happen to them? All the answers are in Pairing with the Protector and you will NOT be disappointed! This is a must read!

The hero and heroine were sucked into a wild wormhole and ended up in an uncharted galaxy, far, far away, where giant elephantine creatures called Tuskers hold and breed Tweedles (who look like humans but aren't capable of thought or speech) and they have to survive living in cages and being presented at pet shows!
It was pretty damn cool and I loved the little Tusker girl Zhu-zhu.
Unfortunately, Whitney (a zoologist) and her Beast Kindred (I can't believe I already forgot his name, it's been five minutes since I closed the book) were so MEH.
Whitney is a paper cutout of Evangeline's other Too Stupid Too Live heroines, but the story did not give her the chance to do incredibly stupid things (because the book was too short, not for lack of trying). Beast Kindred was quiet and tortured, but not in a fun, sexy way. It was more like he got his little boy panties in a twist and kept twisting ... and twisting ... in one long arduous monologue after another. It was excruciating and unnecessary. Who wants to read that?
Also, the whole book felt like Evangeline just wanted to get it all out in a rush. Maybe she wrote it while running away from a T-Rex! Because it sure felt like a lot of opportunities were missed. There could have been so much more tension and angst and danger!! Instead ... it was rather dull, despite the incredibly cool setting.
The deus ex machina from the Kindred Goddess made it all even worse for me. I hate those.
Dr. Whitney Washington is a Xeno-zoologist living on the Kindred Mother Ship and she has a big problem--she has a crush on her bodyguard. Unfortunately, the big Beast Kindred who comes with her to dangerous planets to protect her clearly doesn't return her interest...or does he? Rafe is a warrior with a past--a bad one. I really liked the interactions of Whitney and Rafe. He was so stubborn. The author did present an interesting concept in what would it be like if humans were treated as pets.
This book is a 3.5 but I can’t bring myself to round it up to a 4. The book had much promise and I liked the premise, but they were both too slow for my liking. Many of the things that should be obvious to people with common sense, weren’t to them. Also, for someone who studied animals and the like (not to mention someone who is an adult and not inexperienced), Whitney seemed to, surprisingly, not know what mated animals do... Also, the issue with the babies, it was handled very immaturely by Whitney. Someone doesn’t have to be with you to raise children, it’s selfish to withhold access to children because someone doesn’t want you. Also, the “advice given to her by her friends is terrible and immature as well. As for their relationship, there could have been more plot that showed why he secretly liked her. For example, they could have gone on one simple successful mission first to show their normal interactions (i.e. her teasing him, him pretending to not be outwardly affected, but from his perspective we are told of his turmoil with letting another woman in).
AWFUL!!!! I’ve read every book in this series so far and I have been fighting to get through this one. The female in this book starts out as the most annoying person you could ever encounter. They end up getting caught because of her stupidity. Then after they get caught she is essentially just doing what she can to get the kindred to have sex with her. In the mean time in the cage next to theirs is a long haired surfer type character and his name is dude... yeah, there that.. Also, in the cage on the other side of them is a brother and sister duo who pretext to have sex so the stay at home alien wife who keeps them all as pets believes that they are a breeding pair instead of siblings. Well, she obviously has grounds to believe that they are as they had a “slip up which lead to a litter between them. Let’s not even go into the venture into the stroll through whole history of slavery. Ughhh I’m just over it and having real buyers remorse. Unfortunately I bought the audible version so I cannot justify not finishing it. I was VERY disappointed in this book compared to the others.

Pairing with the Protect is part of the Kindred Tales series by author Evangeline Anderson. I liked this story a lot but I also felt it was a very odd story. It did keep me turning the pages and wanting more. This is part of an ongoing series. I highly suggest reading them in order. It is not necessary per say in this story, but I think you will be less lost if you read the stories in order.
Dr. Whitney Washington is a Xeno-zoologist. She is living on the kindred mother ship. She also has a huge crush on her bodyguard.
Rafe is a warrior with a past. A bad one at that. He has been hurt emotionally before and doesn’t want to repeat that ever.
Then we got to well interesting land in this story. Giant aliens who think that Rafe and Whitney are play toys. I was with this story till that introduction. It is a good read do not get me wrong it just is weird for lack of a better word. I would say this story is for the more open-minded reader and a reader who is willing to overlook some things in this story.
But I’m going to be honest: I feel Rafe (mc) should have done some groveling for all the hurt he caused Whitney (fmc). And I think Whitney should have made him work harder to prove his love and devotion, and that he deserved her forgiveness. A 15 minute conversation and suddenly everything is fine and great. Yea little much bs for me there. Let’s be honest, most people would doubt his abrupt desire and change of heart to be with the fmc. A bit more explanation would be called for, and a whole lot more doubt would be felt from the hurt party. 🤷♀ Just sayin
***SPOILERS***
I would have also liked to see an epilogue showing Rafe’s reaction and response to having/seeing his babies born. I think that would have been a cute ending, especially with his past having been what it was.
A human woman who is a zoologist and her protector who is a beast kindred. The two are sent on a mission to another planet to study the animals and to collect some samples. They head out, but end up in a rogue wormhole that spits them out in a different galaxy that the kindred have never been to before. They are captured by the elephant aliens and caged like pets. You will have to read the book to find out what all happens and if they are able to get back home.

A very sensual erotic Kindred Tale. This fun and entertaining adventure takes Rafe and Whitney to a planet in another galaxy. Giant creatures keep humans as pets forcing them to procreate for their entertainment and profit. A creative well written sexual romance.
I just liked Whitney and Rafe so freakin much! When I read the description I wasn't sure, but it turned out to be a really really good read.I really liked what she did with Zhu Zhu at the end.She left a little seed to grow. This book just made me happy
What a cool new world to explore. Taking tweedles home and an unstable wormhole, great adventure for sure. Wonder if they will be able to go to Vesuvius II or not. Singing and playing with Zhu-zhu was just the ticket. Glad Dood found his Zen as well.
3.5 stars. Wow! Loved her, he was just a little annoying. Although, he did have such a sad past. Okay ending, thank you Goddess for reprimanding him for leaving and demanding his return to her.
This was one of the best books I have read in a while! I love the Kindred books, and this book surprised me at every turn! The surprise at the end was astounding!
Tons of Tweedles and Trunks This was a great addition to the Kindred Tales series. It had a bit of a Gulliver's Travels feeling to it, which made for an interesting combination.
A Scientist Female Human, Whitney and a Kindred Warrior Rafe were out on a mission together when they got sucked into a Wormhole flinging them way out there. Landing on a planet where they need to repair their ship. A Giant Child finds them and takes them home as pets. The Goddess hopefully can save them.
I liked this book 📚 more than I loved the book. I don't think I wanted the book 📚 to be over in the end. I kept getting questions out of the book 📚 towards the end of the book. I didn't what the book 📚 to be cut short and I felt cheesed off. Sorry Evangeline. I liked the Halloween party idea very much and didn't what the party to end. I wanted more to the story ❤️ maybe I was graving a bigger book. I liked the idea of looking after new inserets and wanted to know more about the inserets. I missed the children in this book 📚 instead. I loved the idea being a pair. I liked the Truskers and wanted to learn more about the Truskers. I felt sad when the book 📚 ended. I liked the characters very much I liked Rafe and Whitney lots. Maybe I wanted to reading children's book. I liked the love scenes again. I loved the Whitney songs back in the 80's 💕 very much. I know watched on tv Whitney Houston programme and wanted to listen to Whitney Houston songs after reading the book. I got a chance to e the book again . Yeah I had different and the same feelings about reading 📚book again. I remembered a different Whitney Houston this time The children are our furtune in my head. I remembered early all the words and our I liked the words in the song and how I would sing the words to my cat Charlie with other China in your hands by Blendia Carnile. Some times I do think Charlie heard singing the songs to him and would purr and mewo at me and would lie on my lap and let touch his paws with my fingers. Charlie would walk around with he claws and then sit down on my lap. This time reading 📚the book fort I will have my own children with Shane boyfriend this time with the book.

Pairing With The Protector: A Kindred Tales Novel (Brides of The Kindred). - Evangeline Anderson
This new addition to the Kindred Tales Series has some of the most original and imaginative scenarios and world building yet. Whitney is a scientist that collects specimens from other worlds and has a strong attraction to her “protector Rafe. Of course he can’t return the crazy draw he has to the female his job is to protect as he has a secret past . The guilt he bears as he finds his attraction and love for Whitney gets a bit overdone but the entertaining story keeps everything moving along. As with all missions things can go wrong and an unreliable wormhole finds the couple on a strange world of giants that resemble elephants as the dominant specials and the beast Kindred and Whitney are small and doll size, even clllected as “Tweedles. They are discovered, captured and kept as “pets. Of course they are expected to “breed as well as behave somewhat like pet hamsters. Despite their situation Whitney and Rafe have to escape, somehow fix the spaceship, get thru a wild wormhole and somewhere in all that they fall in love and get an HEA. The story is not a part of the main Kindred series but part of the Kindred novels, although happily, many of the character from the series do make appearances. It’s an enjoyable rollercoaster story with all the adventure, excitement , sizzling hot scenes and crazy “surprises, the author is so well know for.
Another book from this wonderful author. I really do love the Kindred Bride series I gave this a 4 star because even though I loved it, it was my least favorite out of all of them. But it is still worth reading and if she ever brings out the paperback to this book it will end up on my shelf.
I just loved Dr Whitney Washington’s personality. This woman had such an upbeat personality. There is not way you could not like her when you met her. She was so positive and tried to find the good in things. I just loved that about her.
Rafe was a beast kindred and let me tell you my heart truly broke for him. I understand the walls he had built up around his heart. I also understood the hurt and bitterness he carried around. What I saw in him was such strength and a good heart.
This was an interesting spin that the author took on the story. I think it gives you an outlook of how your pets would feel. I can not imagine being treated as a pet, though it might be nice to be fully taken cared of.
I can not imagine the fear and helplessness they must of felt, especially Rafe. But the author did show everything happens for a reason. As you are reading this story you will see what that reason is. There are a few hot and steamy parts, danger, sad times, and some touching moments as well.
I would highly recommend this book. Was a great story.
This is the best portrayal of a woman of color that Anderson has published yet! I spoke with her a few months ago about how I appreciated her incorporating women of color in her novels, but how the writing of the characters is culturally inauthentic and that the background story wasn’t well written enough to make sense of the actions, thought processes and beliefs of the characters. After reading Pairing with the Protector, I truly believe Anderson took our conversation into account in her writing of Whitney. This is the first heroine in a while who did not absolutely annoy me with her ridiculousness. Oh you’re body positive, but still self-conscious? What? That doesn’t make sense. Whitney was bold, sensual, and confident. Most of all her character wasn’t written in a way that made me believe that the characters was actually a white woman coming through a black woman’s physical features. The only thing that would have made the writing of Whitney better would have be the use of any other term besides “plus sized (not many black women use that term is reference of themselves) and the proper use of Ebonics. Overall I give this story 4.5/5 stars.
I couldn't put this book down, very unique story with great lead characters. Rafe has some tragedy in his past and has vowed to never love again, he's now the bodyguard/protector for Whitey. They are set to go on a mission to collect samples to study but they end up on a different planet than they were supposed to land on. I don't want to give away the story but Whitney is willing to do whatever it takes to survive and get back home. But Rafe is hesitant because of his vow to protect Whitney and to never love again. Whitney takes charge and does what needs to be done and I loved seeing the woman willing to to whatever to survive. She was a no nonsense, no whining, lets get this done type of woman. Rafe was great in his way and after you learn why he has reservations it makes you love him even more. Can't wait for more!!!

Pairing with the Protector is the latest instalment in the Brides of the Kindred Series by Evangeline Anderson. As usual, it is superbly written and an amazing book to read. Our story centres around Beast Kindred, Rafe and Doctor Whitney Washington. Rafe has sworn never to love again after losing his first mate. He has also sworn to be the protector of Xeno Zoologist, Whitney who lives aboard the mothership and often visits new planets to explore their creatures. In what was supposed to be just another regular mission turns into life and death as Rafe and Whitney are forced to find a way out of the dire situation they find in. It’s not every day you find yourself face to face with a giant, but that’s the dilemma in this situation. The chemistry in this book is sizzling as are the main characters. I loved the interaction between the two main characters and everyone they interact with too. A great book that you should try to read as soon as possible.
Whitney is an amazing lady she smart, sexy and sings like her namesake Whitney Houston. She works for a kindred program that studies different species that can help improve kindred life and those who !i've on the mother ship. She's looking for her own warrior to love and is strongly attracted to her beast kindred protector Rafe. Rafe is a wonderful, loyal beast kindred whose job is to protect Whitney when she travels to different worlds to study new species of animals. He's attracted to her but doesn't want to be due to his very sad past. Many years ago he was mate with a child in the way when both were tragically taken from him. He gives never to !I've again because it's just to painfully to have love and lost. Together they head off on a mission that goes horribly wrong from The beginning. Together they must learn to trust in love and each other if they are going to survive.
Well, this was a real page turner and absolutely nothing like any of the previous books in the series at all! I absolutely loved it and was totally hooked, what I also liked about this book was the length as it wasn't too long. It was still a good sized book but not a super sized novel, which I do like, but sometimes they are just too long and I sometimes think go on just that little bit too long and are a bit unnecessary, sorry. The story was fantastic, and I hate spoilers so I won't go into details but it was just fab. I loved Rafe and Whitney, their relationship was, from the start, a classic romance and you couldn't help but adore them both, and the other characters made me laugh as well, especially Dood! This is probably one of my all time favs in the series, and will be one of my go to re-reads now. Loved, loved, loved it! I would definitely recommend this book.
