Ghostsitter - A Crazy Inheritance

Rate this book
A whole-family listen for fans of Hotel Transylvania and The Addams Family.

When Tom is invited to the reading of a will of a great-uncle he’s never heard of, there’s no way to know what to expect. But on the long list of possible things to inherit, a travelling carnival ghost train is the very last on the list.

To get his full $10 million inheritance, all Tom has to do is run the antique ride until his 18th birthday. Easy. Except for a strange caped-creep he’s never met, who’s trying to con him out of the money...and the actual ghosts and ghouls who call the ride home.

Over the decades, vampire Vlarad, zombie Wombie, Hop-Tep the mummy, werewolf Welf, and ghost girl Mimi have created their own unique family, and they welcome Tom into their circle as a first-time "ghostsitter".

Keeping the spirits secret from the outside world is not easy, but with wit and ingenuity, Tom proves, time and again, that he is exactly the right person for the job.

Ghostsitter - A Crazy Inheritance
By: Tommy Krappweis
Narrated by: Michael Braun, Marc Vietor, Jay Snyder, Dina Pearlman, Cynthia Darlow, Stephen Bel Davies, James Fouhey, Jeena Yi, Jessie Cannizzaro, Kevin T. Collins, Mateo D'Amato
This was such a fun book to listen to! A 14 yr old boy inherits a fortune if he take care of the Ghost Train, a traveling tour exhibit. If course he agrees but he finds there are really are paranormal creatures on the train! This is so fun in how the evil guy who wants the train tries to destroy it. How the boy meets each of the creatures and they each bond! It's such a great story all the way around! I wish there was another one in English. I see others in other languages.
The narration was excellent! Loved this! Kids will really love it!

I lowkey love audible original audiobooks because they help me knock out so many books on my freaking challenge. Still super behind.. but details.

Ghostsitter was one adventure that I was excited for. Maybe it's because I had a really good night's rest but I was ready to dive into so many audiobooks, ebooks, and physicals today. If I'm being completely honest.. it probably wont be a lot but I'm game for whatever right now.

In this, you will meet Tom. Now he just inherited a ghost train.. which honestly I was completely intrigued about. Now the train holds undead creatures.. again, super intrigued. I was definitely getting some Stephen King meets Goosebumps kind of vibes in this book. I will even admit that it was a pretty interesting and entertaining book to listen to.

This was a fun, well-written, charming, audible book, that I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. It had multiple narrators that brought the book to life and I would recommend it to both YA and adult listeners.

Goofy Ghouly Fun for Kids
Review of the Audible Original audiobook (June 2020) translated and adapted from the German language original (Inherited Spirits) (2015)

This recent English language Audible Original is based on the first book of a popular German language series called Ghostsitter which already has 5 adventures. The audiobook does not mention a translator, so perhaps the author also wrote the English language version. This is a kid friendly audiobook as long as you and your kids are ok with a comic treatment of mythological or undead creatures such as werewolves, vampires, mummies, zombies and ghosts. The flirtatious relationship between the 14-year-old lead character Tom and the ghost girl Mimi seemed very odd though, with hints of stalkerish jealousy displayed by the ghost. This was probably something that only adults would notice though.

Ghostsitter: A Crazy Inheritance was one of the free Audible Original audiobooks for members in June 2020. It is available to everyone for a standard price.

Trivia and Link
The rather catchy theme song was also originally written in German and you can see/hear that version on YouTube .

Just a silly story staring a human, a ghost, a vampire, a werewolf, and other creatures. I really enjoyed this book and provided me with lots of laughs. If you are looking for a silly story this is worth a listen

Listening to this audio felt like watching a cartoon action show. There's theme music and episodes and fights against bad guys. It was pretty entertaining, I liked the different paranormal characters and Tom was a funny kid. I wouldn't mind listening to more episodes and seeing what other adventures Tom and his friends get into, plus the bad guy didn't seem like he would give up easily.

The funniest part is the zombie with a teddy bear lol. I also thought Tom's friendship with the ghost girl was adorable, especially since she likes video games too. Narrators did a great job and the sound effects really added to the experience.

I didn't like it and the kids didn't like it either. Some things I thought were slightly inappropriate, others were slapstick and dumb. Not for us. Any of us.

So this isn't exactly spooky season, but I'm reviewing this now anyways! Because I can. :D

I don't normally go for ghost stories, but since I had this leftover from an audible subscription I figured I might as well listen to it. And I was pleasantly surprised! Every character is so entertaining and it feels like they have realistic personalities, which makes the whole situation of almost all the main cast being a Halloween monster even more hilarious. If I had to pick a favorite I would probably say Mimi, but Tom is a close second. I love how he freaks out as much as anyone would being thrust into a supernatural world, but it's awesome how quickly he turns around and gains confidence in his new friendships and adventures.

This is only book one in the series, and I'm unsure how many there are and how many Audible has/will produce, but I'll definitely pick up the next one at some point. I was impressed how fleshed out this first volume was, from the character relationships to descriptive action scenes. I could easily see this series picked up by an animation studio at some point. No complaints about the voice acting either, though I did find the song at the end of each chapter annoying.

One note, though for parents: overall this book is definitely age appropriate for middle grade kids, as long as they're not scared of vampires, werewolves, and the like. The book does take one step further from Halloween monsters and incorporate some hypnotism, black magic rituals, and demon lore as well, so if your family is sensitive to those topics I would preview the book before letting kids listen to it so you're prepared for a bit of discussion. But in general, for kids who are into spooky stories, I would definitely recommend.

Light-hearted and zany comedy with a full narrator cast. Adults may enjoy it, but it's probably geared more toward elementary age kids as it feels more like listening to a Saturday morning cartoon. There's even a theme song that is played at the end of each section.

When Tom's great-uncle dies he leaves Tom $10 million and a traveling carnival ghost train, except he only gets the $10 mil if he stays with the train for a certain amount of years. He doesn't quite know what a ghost train is, but soon he's learning that supernatural, undead creatures exist. Features a zombie (with a teddy bear), a young, female ghost, vampire, werewolf, and mummy.

At times I enjoyed the story and all it's craziness, but other times I lost interest, especially in section 3. Like other audible originals the production is well done and the narrators each created their own unique character voices.

In diesem Sinne " Gnnmmmhhh" ...

This was a highly entertaining audiobook. I loved almost everything about it!

The characters were interesting; though, they didn't have as much depth if it was written longer. Regardless, I think they were perfect the way they are.

The plot was okay-ish. I say this because I find that there are holes within the story that weren't discussed enough which are pivotal to the story. But considering there is a sequel, it might be safe to say that those will be there.

The only problem I had with this short story was the length of the chapter. Yes, it was short so there isn't much to expect chapter wise; however, I believe that they could have written short chapters instead of place the reader (in this case, the listener) in a pedestal wherein they are forced to listen to an entire, almost an hour length, chapter to avoid unnecessary and abrupt stop within the story.

Overall, It was such a fun read and I highly recommend it for people looking to have a cute, relaxing, fantastical read.

Amusing jaunt through a monster world via this audible original. Had “Monster Squad vibes for all the 80s kids out there!

A little bit of disconnect for me, with Tom. He’s supposed to be 13 but didn’t sound that age to me, both in mannerisms and the age of the voice actor.

Reminds me of what it must have been like to sit around the radio and listen to a story. A good amount of laugh-out-loud moments in “Ghost Sitter.

Suitable for families (and individuals, of course) to listen to together. Maybe middle school and up, for comprehension purposes.

Who let a fourteen year old boy be in charge of a caravan full of things that could scare the pants off me? That just shouts bad idea to me. No one, but that is my opinion.

Anyway This was a fun one to listen to with the kids. A child with no adult supervision, magic, action, undead friends? It even has a theme song?!?! The kids loved it and we would shout the song in the car when we were listening to it.

Tom is a brave kid. He took all of this responsibility on with almost no resistance. Not sure the same could be said of me. Pretty sure it would have taken me weeks, if not months, to decide if this is the life for me. Here he is, though, taking over to run it all. Maybe not like a boss just yet, but he has help from his new friends along the way.

The voice acting from certain characters was...questionable. And nothing really happened. Definitely for kids without broader appeal. And hard meh on the humor.

Kurzbeschreibung

World of Wer Wizards verfügt.

ME GUSTÓ MUCHO.

Tom is a fourteen-year-old boy living with his adopted grandmother when he receives a letter from a law firm inviting him to the reading of a will. It's the will of his great-uncle, Heinrich, his grandmother's brother. He's just absorbing that information when there's a knock at the door. The man at the door is his Uncle Welf.

It's worth noting that Tom had never heard of Great-Uncle Heinrich or Uncle Welf before.

Uncle Welf drives them to the reading of the will, where Tom learns that he will inherit more than ten million euros if he takes control of Heinrich's ghost train carnival ride, the Terror Train, and keeps it operating until he's eighteen. Uncle Welf, of course, will be his agent because he's underage, but he'll have to travel with the ride.

These revelations are followed immediately by the arrival of a very sinister-looking man with a very fake foreign accent, and his companion, a woman dressed equally dramatically in red,00. The man wants to buy the ghost train from Tom for 100,000 euros, a sum he expects to completely overwhelm Tom. He also expects that fourteen-year-old Tom will want to spend it on toys and sweets. The clash that follows is entertaining, and Tom learns something about what Welf is good at. Nevertheless, he signs the will, and Welf promptly gets ready to escort him to the ghost train and his new life.

Things get even more confusing for him, and entertaining for the listener, when Tom meets Mimi (the ghost girl), Hop-Tep (an Egyptian mummy),Wombie (a zombie), and Vlarad, a vampire.

What follows is exciting, confusing, and entertaining. I'm not saying this is great literature, but it is a lot of fun. The full-cast narration is very well done and adds to the enjoyment.

I bought this audiobook.

I love this book. It was way more fun and enjoyable than I expected. It even has a theme song which is just fantastic. I could listen to it on repeat and just be happy. I really hope that the rest of the series is adapted into English. I think the original is in German. I listened to a full cast English version.

This is a great book for young kids and perfect if you need a spooky read or listen for October. This is a book that I will probably repeat listen too, which I don't do a whole lot of that.

I might even go so far as to say this is one of my top favorite listens/reads for the Halloween season.

I honestly didn't expect to much going in with the premise of a kid inheriting a ghost train with real supernatural creatures. The whole idea of a ghost babysitter didn't like it would be as good as it turn out to be. I am glad I took a chance on this book.

If the rest of the series gets translated into English, I look forward to listening to them all, even if they don't keep the full cast for the books after this. I really hope that they do because the full cast works so well for this book. The narrators were amazing. Each one made their characters come alive so vividly that it gave me the impression I used to get when I would watch Saturday morning cartoons growing up. The ones you got up early to watch and had been anticipating seeing all week long. Your favorites. With how they did the audiobook it reminds me a lot of the old radio shows, only like updated for our modern age. Again, I really loved this book. I don't know if I could say enough good things about it.
