May 22, 2021This was really sweet! It’s a gay high fantasy romance story. I was expecting a historical romance but the fantasy was a nice surprise. It’s a lot more than a prince/pirate love story, and I’ll leave at that because I think it might be spoilery if I elaborate. Pirates aren’t even really a *huge* part of the story honestly. But I enjoyed the direction it took. It took me a bit to get into because I felt the world building was lacking. I think I may have enjoyed it more if that had been expanded upon. You kind of dive head first into the story and I found that a bit jarring so it took some time for me to find my footing. But it definitely is a love story. Tal and Athlen were both such adorable characters and I loved watching their romance blossom, even if it did happen quickly. I also loved the familial love. Pretty much all of the characters in here cared for and loved each other fiercely. I think the plot was interesting but with it being based in the world politics, it suffered a little from the sparse world building. Mostly it was driven by the romance but I didn’t mind that. Overall a fun, sweet, and fluffy fantasy read!

I had high hopes when I started this, but in the end I found this story underwhelming.
Everything about it � the writing, the plot, the characters, the dialogues � felt too juvenile and simplistic for me.
The story was quite predictable and tropey, a bit boring at times, and the characters were kind of bland. I didn't necessarily dislike it, I just found it lacking all around.
The audiobook was ok.

THIS WAS SO CUTE!!!! Going into this book, I had no idea it was a fantasy romance. I just thought it was a historical romance about a guy going on his coming of age tour falling for a guy who is hanging with pirates. While that does happen, the magic plays a HUGE part in this book and I really loved it. The growth Tal goes through from hiding in the castle as the magical fourth royal child to someone who is strong, confident, and determined to save the ones he loves was amazing. Tal's relationship with his family as definitely one of my favorite aspects of this book. From the first page to the last page, their devotion and love to one another was just so heartwarming. I would have loved to get to know their mom more too, but I still enjoyed seeing Tal interact with his siblings.
The romance in this book was just so wholesome and sweet and I was swooning over it. Tal and Athlen slowly fell for each other and would do anything to keep each other safe. There's even a nursing-back-to-health scene in here that was adorable. I can't gush about them or this book enough! Definitely go pick it up!

this was such a fun quick read, it also is a standalone i believe and i really like how good the world building was, i expected it to be more of a pirate romance kind of thing but i still enjoyed it either way

It was easy to give in, to let his eyes slide half closed, to let his body drift in the rhythm of the sea. His pain dulled - the scorch from his chest and shoulder became distant, as if it weren't happening to him at all. But he still felt regret over the thought of never seeing his family again, of never seeing Athlen again..."

This was such a cute story!!! Sweet, beautiful, just ADORABLE!!!😍😍 Picture a much better version of The Little Mermaid where the prince is magic and the little mermaid is actually a little merman, and he is much, much better.
The plot was pretty solid. Fun and full of action, danger, and romance. A family that loves and cares for each other deeply, in spite of Tal's dangerous and secret magic threatening to destroy their kingdom, in particular. I loved the similarities between the book and The Little Mermaid. There weren't a lot of them but they were clear. Like Athlen's red hair and collection of various thingamabobs. His bargain with the seawitch for human legs (only he can switch between tail and legs at will), and of course, saving a handsome prince from a burning ship (although, it was the prince who set the ship on fire but...semantics 😋).
In Deeper Waters is basically a fairytale in its essence.
There were moments that seemed to drag on and became a little dull. However, for the most part I really liked what I was reading. It helped that the plot was pretty simple and the writing was easy to comprehend, with its large font and simple-ish language, dispite of those dull moments here and there. I jumped into this book expecting a gay pirate adventure, but this is more of a fantasy coming of age with some sea adventure and pirates involved, and some gay or queer characters.
Prince Tal has been kept hidden in the palace for the past years because he needed to keep his magic secret. After his ancestor wreaked havoc on the lands and waged a bloody magical war a few decades ago, any hint that Tal has the same magic in him would be enough to create panic and would put Tal's life in danger. At 16, he can now finally leave the palace for his coming-of-age tour of the kingdom. Things do not go as planned though when Tal and his older brother find a mysterious prisoner on an abandoned ship, or when Tal gets kidnapped and locked up because someone hopes that his disappearance and death will be enough to spark a war.
This book is sweet and cute. Athlen and Tal's relationship has a fast pace at first with a kind of insta-connection, which I was wary of, but it gets better after that and they are really cute together. Tal's kindness and compassion mean everything to Athlen who has no one left in the world, and Athlen's easy acceptance of Tal and his magic comes as a relief to Tal who can finally be himself with someone who's not family, without being afraid and without scaring them away. Tal started the book not really knowing who he was or who he wanted to be, and he gained confidence and realized his own worth as he was faced with life or death situations and had to make some tough decisions.
The world-building is very basic. We are given enough information to understand the politics between Tal's kingdom and the other kingdoms, and to be able to imagine what the setting looks like, but not much more.
The plot is the reason why I did not give this book a higher rating. While being entertaining and a quick read, the plot is thin and overall quite predictable. The main focus is on the romance, which is not a bad thing, but because of that, the political aspect and the part about the villain scheming to kidnap and use or kill Tal are not really developed. There were a few plot twists, that were quite predictable too, but it still was a satisfying and heartwarming read.
Athlen's sunny personality and curiosity reminded me a little bit of Tolly in . He is curious and enjoys every new experience to its fullest... Except maybe horseback riding. I really like him, and I would have loved to have more backstory and more of him overall.
Tal's relationship with his brothers and sisters, while not being the focal point of this book, was SO wholesome. They are all so supportive of each other, and so close-knit. I love how they teased each other, and how they obviously loved each other so much. It just added to the sweetness of Tal and Athlen's romance.
Finally, I have to say that the “villain� was underwhelming. The person who orchestrated Tal's kidnapping and a few assassination attempts just revealed everything once they were questioned by Tal in front of the royal family. I have to say that it was quite disappointing to see that this apparent mastermind who’d schemed for weeks or months would just admit to everything with almost no prompting, going as far as saying something along the lines of "yes I did it and I'm surprised you're alive because I paid them well to kill you" in front of the whole royal family...

In Deeper Waters is the kind of book I was destined to enjoy. It’s fantasy, yes, but it’s very heavily focused on romance, and if you know anything about me, it surely is how much I love when that happens.
This isn’t to say that nothing else happens, apart from two boys being into each other. It’s quite the opposite actually, it’s action-packed. It’s just that even with everything that’s going on, with kidnappings and ransoms, and a threat of war, there’s always this undercurrent of love. The romance feels like the central part of the novel, even though it technically really isn’t.
I think it’s the love that ultimately makes this a very gentle book. Not even the romance, but love in general. Because yes, Tal has a family that he loves fiercely and who loves him back to death; there are friends becoming a found family; there are people just willing to help others. To balance out every dramatic thing that takes place, there’s at least one tender scene, overflowing with love.
In Deeper Waters might not be the kind of book to keep you at the edge of your seat with anticipation (the vibes are pretty clear from the start: there will be a happy ending), but it sure is one that will make you feel safe & welcomed. And, most importantly, loved. It’s a story you want to read on a rainy day, so its softness would warm you (and your heart).

1.5 stars, rounded down because this was one of my most anticipated books of 2021 and I'm super disappointed.
First of all; this is NOT a pirate romance or whatever this book was marketed as. They're on a ship for like 5 pages and an ellipsis but that's it so don't go into it thinking it's a pirate story.
The characters are also super disappointing! I know they're young (16) but can't we please get just an ounce of character development? I don't want to go into spoilers but the only development just felt painfully cliché and honestly, badly brought up.
Everything also felt painfully obvious and cliché. I should have counted how many times I put the book down, sighed, and told my roommate my predictions for the next 10 pages or so. I was right every single time. It was so boring to read because of this. There was so much potential! But all of the dialogue was cliché, things I've read at least a thousand times in fanfics.
Also, not a big fan of the romance. Very insta-lovey (you've known this guy for 2 days and he's the love of your life??), which is something I really hate in fiction. If you're fine with it, you'll probably enjoy the book a lot more than I did, at least. It was still sort of cute at times, I guess. I didn't hate it as much as I hated the romance in The Friend Scheme (idk if that's even possible tbh) so that's something.
Anyway. I'm so disappointed, I can't really recommend this book to anyone. It was a pain to pick up. I just didn't want to read at all, because I knew I'd just get angry with the book. But if you do decide to pick it up, I hope you'll have a great time with it.

This queer high fantasy romance fairytale was absolutely EVERYTHING. I honestly CHERISHED this. I think I will forever cherish this book. My boys are so precious!!!! So here for the pan rep (loved it all the more because its so close to my own heart, obviously 🤍), the honestly... all encompassing LGBTQIA+ rep, in its own way? Just... such an amazing royal family, and so much magic in unexpected places! Ahhhh, I loved this SO MUCH. *swoons* Both Tal & Athlen are SO DREAMY! Especially together! ( I mean, DUH! 🥰 )

Este libro es de la cosas más bonitas y wholesome que he leído últimamente.
En In Deeper Waters nos encontramos con la historia de Tal, el príncipe de un reino que está a punto de partir en su gran tour por ya ser mayor. Tal, que prácticamente nunca ha salido del palacio porque debe esconder la magia que tiene en él y que no es común en esa era, está muy emocionado por conocer más de su reino y, en efecto, las aventuras no tardan en aparecer, pues en los primeros días navegando se encuentran con un naufragio y rescatan a Athlen, un chico que estaba allí. A Tal le encargan vigilarlo, pues ahora es su prisionero, y empieza a sentir una conexión impresionante con ese chico rebelde. Sin embargo, Athlen se lanza por la borda en un momento y desaparece, haciéndoles pensar a todos que está muerto. La cosa es que, unos días más tarde, Athlen y Tal se encuentran de nuevo en tierra firme, pero la felicidad les dura poco porque unos piratas secuestran a Tal para que revele sus poderes y puedan empezar una guerra en contra del reino� y la única persona que podrá salvarlo será Athlen.
¡No saben cómo me divertí leyendo este libro! Creo que es una historia perfecta para quienes leyeron The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue y para quienes adoren Pirates of the Caribbean. La combinación de fantasía, aventuras, tensión romántica y problemas que crea F. T. Lukens en este libro es buenísima y hace que no puedas parar de leer. Y es que los secretos y los giros de trama tampoco se quedan atrás. Me encantó ver cómo luchaba Tal con la carga que era su magia, los estigmas que tenía por culpa de ella y cómo, poco a poco, fue entendiendo que no era algo inherentemente malo, sino una herramienta que podía usar a su favor. Y también amé lo que ocultaba Athlen. Siendo sincera, me lo esperé desde un primer momento, pero esta era una clase de secreto que era bastante evidente y que, en el fondo, ni él mismo quería mantener, así que no me molestó adivinarlo.
Y, por supuesto, mi parte favorita del libro fue el romance que, evidentemente, va surgiendo entre Tal y Athlen. ¡Es que son preciosos y hay que protegerlos! Me fascinó que todo fue a paso lento, pero que, internamente, cada uno estaba dudando de los sentimientos del otro, de si debían acercarse más, si realmente valía la pena intentarlo dado que venían de mundos tan diferentes� Pero también amé que cuando se dieron cuenta de que los dos querían lo mismo, se lanzaron sin ningún miedo y tuvieron momentos preciosos. Además, el final es súper angustiante e intenso por cierta cosa que revela Athlen� y wow.
Espero que F. T. Lukens se anime a ampliar este universo y darle más aventuras a Tal y a Athlen porque me niego a que esto sea un libro standalone.

Me encantó ver cómo luchaba Tal con la carga que era su magia, los estigmas que tenía por culpa de ella y cómo, poco a poco, fue entendiendo que no era algo inherentemente malo, sino una herramienta que podía usar a su favor. Y también amé lo que ocultaba Athlen. Siendo sincera, me lo esperé desde un primer momento, pero esta era una clase de secreto que era bastante evidente y que, en el fondo, ni él mismo quería mantener, así que no me molestó adivinarlo.
Y, por supuesto, mi parte favorita del libro fue el romance que, evidentemente, va surgiendo entre Tal y Athlen. ¡Es que son preciosos y hay que protegerlos! Me fascinó que todo fue a paso lento, pero que, internamente, cada uno estaba dudando de los sentimientos del otro, de si debían acercarse más, si realmente valía la pena intentarlo dado que venían de mundos tan diferentes� Pero también amé que cuando se dieron cuenta de que los dos querían lo mismo, se lanzaron sin ningún miedo y tuvieron momentos preciosos. Además, el final es súper angustiante e intenso por cierta cosa que revela Athlen� y wow.
Espero que F. T. Lukens se anime a ampliar este universo y darle más aventuras a Tal y a Athlen porque me niego a que esto sea un libro standalone.

This book was utterly charming and so sweet. It felt a little like The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue , a little like Carry On , but yet all its own. I really enjoyed all of these characters and their immediate acceptance of people’s differences.
I don’t know if In Deeper Waters is intended to be the first in a series, but I’d love to see this world and these characters that Lukens created again.

A royal and a prisoner fall in love amidst a coming-of-age tour upturned by pirates? That, with comparisons to Pirates of the Carribean had my heart from the beginning. In Deeper Waters was a mindlessly fun read filled with all the right kinds of magic!
Prince Tal has been locked up in the palace for years, forced to hide the rare magic in his veins. His coming-of-age tour is a much needed taste of freedom, but the discovery of a prisoner chained to a half sunken ship bring his plans to a halt. Tal is tasked with looking over the strange man—Athlen—as he is questioned about his imprisonment. As he thinks he’s made a friend, Athlen jumps overboard and disappears into the sea, right before Tal is kidnapped by pirates looking to confirm rumours of magic.

Sweet is a word that encompasses this story to a T. The characters have such heart, its truly hard not to love them. Tal’s compassion was infectious, and Athlen’s curiosity put a smile on my face from the very start. The romance was heartwarming and genuine; Tal and Athlen’s relationship is definitely what makes this book so wonderful (as well as Tal’s bond with his brothers)!
While I loved the cast of In Deeper Waters, the plot is where things faltered. The overarching story was pretty generic, though not unredeemable. F.T. Lukens� writing style exuded fun, rendering the plot—though ordinary and predictable—entertaining enough to flip through at a brisk pace. I adored the whimsy of this tale, including pirates, mages and mermaids. I can forgive the plot for just that reason—lovely characters and magic!

The synopsis of "In Deeper Waters" sounded very promising, and I’m happy to report that the story really held up! It was easy to understand, and the world building was done incredibly well. There was no info dumping, nor was it written vaguely. The adventure was such a fun time too. I adored every minute of it!
The main characters where especially likeable. Tal was so nice and genuine. From the start I could tell I’d love him! Athlen was also very wholesome. At first, I wasn’t particularly fond of him. However, as the story progressed, I found myself absolutely adoring his character!
Moreover, the side characters where one of the best parts of the book! I love how each and every one of Tal’s siblings had their own distinct personalities. Kest was courageous and kind, much like Tal. On the other hand, Garret was spontaneous and outgoing. His sisters where also strong and resilient. Adding on to that, I really loved how In Deeper Waters contains such powerful women. From Tal’s bodyguard, to a fiery sea captain, women can do it all!
In addition, the dialogue was very heartwarming. I enjoyed reading Tal’s conversations with his siblings. They each had a special way of interacting, and it was just too cute! Athlen and Tal’s conversations where at times mysterious, and this only made me want to read more. However, the dialogue between all the characters where mostly joyous or emotional.
At first I couldn’t resonate much with the writing style. Third person writing is not my thing, but In Deeper Waters has changed my perspective on it. The writing was eccentric and fresh. It always had me at the edge of my seat! Furthermore, the talk about classism intrigued me quite a bit. It’s not something I see discussed much in historical fiction, so I’m glad it was mentioned.
The overall enjoyment level of In Deeper Waters is very high. It took a little while for me to be fully engrossed in the story, but once I got into it, the book was immensely enjoyable! All in all, this novel is an exceptionally refreshing read that’s perfect for spring! It’s the epic high fantasy you’ve been waiting for!

Absolutely amazing. I love this book with my whole damn heart. I LOVED IT SOOO MUCH. THE MAIN COUPLE MEANS SO MUCH TO ME. 5 “bDZ� stars. This was probably my most anticipated release for this year and it didn't disappoint. i'm so happy i picked this up
Story: It’s essentially about Tal (prince) who is finally stepping out of the castle for the first time for his coming-of-age tour of his kingdom. Tal has magic, unfortunately considered a curse in their kingdom, and so has been hidden his entire life. On his journey he meets a stranger, Athlen. As the story goes on, Tal is kidnapped by mercenaries and is saved by Athlen. Tal learns that his family has been betrayed and with Athlen’s help, wants to save his kingdom and family from further danger.
I just want to give both Tal and Athlen a giant, warm hug. They are some of the purest characters I’ve read about. AND CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THE FUCKING GORGEOUS COVER? Stunnnning.
Tal was just so innocent and naïve in the beginning of the book. It hurt to read about how sheltered hes been his entire life.
“The world isn’t kind,� Tal said�
“But that doesn’t mean I can’t be.�
Athlen was just guarded. He’s been lonely and isolated and skittish his entire life and when he opens up to Tal so soon in the book, I could literally feel his emotions. Felt how badly he wanted someone to care about and someone who would care for him.
“I know you want to protect me, but I don’t need protecting. I’d rather be in danger with you than left behind�
And he’s a merman. That’s right. A merman. I legit thought this was a prince-pirate romance. But it’s not.
Am I disappointed? HELL-fucking-NO
The development of both the characters are more on a personal level. They developed on how the felt about themselves and their powers. Tal finally gains confidence and stops beating himself up and honestly? It’s hot for a YA.
“I most definitely was not having fun at the expense of those I love. I am Prince Taliesin of Harth, fourth child of Queen Carys, and you will obey my command. Is that clear?�
They’re the last of their kind and the come to terms with it and deal with it together and it’s just so sweet.
“I know we’re both the last, and we’ve felt alone. But we could be alone together.�
Every scene of them together is nothing but sweet and tender and makes me hate myself more.
“Can I touch you?�

Tal wrapped his arms around Athlen’s shaking body and held on. “I’ve got you.�

I went into this book fully expecting a wrecked or terrible family. But you guys. This family. Fucking precious. Save them at all costs. They were the most supportive, loving and all around just plain good people. They had banter and arguments and “sibling moments� I couldn’t help relate with.
“You don’t have to do this for me.�
Garrett puffed out his chest. “Who says I’m doing it for you? Maybe it’s time I settle down.�
“Settle down?� Kest huffed. “This coming from the man who spends most of the year at sea.�
“Yes. Settle down. Give Mother some grandchildren. The sea knows she’ll not have any from you if you don’t ever let Shay know you adore her.�
“Kest sputtered in embarrassment.�
I love how they just accepted Athlen in. Honestly every person in this book, including the villains, was just perfect. They had character and personality whether it be good or cruel. It just worked.
overall: completely recommend this book if you’re looking for something fun, fluffy and easy. Honestly I do t think I’ll re-read this anytime soon. It just feels like the kind of book you read once and live it and leave it. It had these twists and secrets that’s revealed and I can’t live through it again but I might just go Back into this for Tal and Athlen.

I waited soooo long to read this. the cover captured me the moment I laid my eyes on it. I was afraid & I'm glad it didn't disappoint.
& even though I'm not a person to arrange a TBR for a month, but I always love to read "sea" stories in summer. (🌈 also my Pride month mood spreading beyond June😄)
it was cute & lighthearted
with retelling vibes (guess which one?)
& there were things I didn't expect & I was thrilled to see it, like when I found out it had a retelling vibes. (not exactly a solid retelling tho, just having some elements, but a fresh new story)
the ending hit me in the feels! I'm emotional!
but thankfully I guess it was one of the books that help me out of my slump
comparing to So This Is Ever After which was my first Lukens:

the Plot here was deeper, the adventures, the excitements, the motives, the reasons, the relations, not merely a rom-com in a fantasy land. though the first quarter was a little slow, but the characters were good & it was intriguing to wait & see when my theories come true.
I read that one faster; but only because currently I'm in a reading slump. this was interesting too. & it helped me out of my slump.
I always prefer 3rd person, so I liked the narrative here. (& beautiful descriptions)
I think Lukens used pop culture references in their stories, like small seeds; here vibes, & in their other book, "Merthur" & building their world & plot around the concept, however changed it so they're not exactly a retelling, & only had the vibes.

Forbidden magic, mermen, warring kingdoms, shapeshifters, pirate attacks, kidnappings, assassination attempts, and a healthy dose of coming-of-age romance, is a fantasy epic that has quickly become an instant YA favourite of mine.
I read many reviews that called this story simple and tropey, but if that’s the case then I’m a very simple woman with a love of tropes done well, because this book captured my heart so profoundly, that I put my library copy down at chapter 3 and jumped online to order my own hardback immediately—I loved it so instantly and just had to have this book in my collection.
I found this high fantasy story to be all things compelling. I adored the characters, their romance, and the magic-fused world they inhabited. The world-building was easy and fun, but vivid and immersive—which is the best kind of world-building, in my opinion.
I didn’t really have prior knowledge of the plot going in—I simply loved the themes hinted to in the synopsis and had major heart-eyes for that book cover. To be honest, I think a limited knowledge of the story probably worked in my favour, as I was able to be wowed and excited as the action and romance unfolded.
I will say, though, that the stand out story elements for me were the familial bonds shared between the main character and his siblings and, of course, the heart-melting romance. Author Julian Winters described the love story as a “breath-stealing romance� and I could not agree more. This pair go instantly to my best couples bookshelf and there they shall stay.
Needless to say, I’ve pre-ordered Lukens next novel () and can not wait to dive in, heart wide open and ready to swoon.
Forbidden magic, mermen, warring kingdoms, shapeshifters, pirate attacks, kidnappings, assassination attempts, and a healthy dose of coming-of-age romance, is a fantasy epic that has quickly become an instant YA favourite of mine.
I read many reviews that called this story simple and tropey, but if that’s the case then I’m a very simple woman with a love of tropes done well, because this book captured my heart so profoundly, that I put my library copy down at chapter 3 and jumped online to order my own hardback immediately—I loved it so instantly and just had to have this book in my collection.
I found this high fantasy story to be all things compelling. I adored the characters, their romance, and the magic-fused world they inhabited. The world-building was easy and fun, but vivid and immersive—which is the best kind of world-building, in my opinion.
I didn’t really have prior knowledge of the plot going in—I simply loved the themes hinted to in the synopsis and had major heart-eyes for that book cover. To be honest, I think a limited knowledge of the story probably worked in my favour, as I was able to be wowed and excited as the action and romance unfolded.
I will say, though, that the stand out story elements for me were the familial bonds shared between the main character and his siblings and, of course, the heart-melting romance. Author Julian Winters described the love story as a “breath-stealing romance� and I could not agree more. This pair go instantly to my best couples bookshelf and there they shall stay.
Needless to say, I’ve pre-ordered Lukens next novel () and can not wait to dive in, heart wide open and ready to swoon.

this book was... frustrating. i was really looking forward to a queer pirate romance but i was just disappointed. i could tell what the author was trying to write, but it just didn’t translate onto the page.
i thought the world-building was severely lacking; the different kingdoms ended up playing a role in the plot but they weren’t explained very well. the plot was good but i felt a lot of the conflicts were resolved too quickly.
the romance had it’s cute moments that i enjoyed, but i just thought they lacked chemistry. i’m not a fan of insta-love, and i just thought the romance was introduced wayyy too early.
however, i did enjoy the ending. the last 30 pages was probably my favorite part of the whole book. i wish the entire book could’ve been similar to that.
overall, i was just really disappointed; the whole book just felt kinda underdeveloped. i know what the author was going for, it just didn’t hit the mark for me.
