Penelope Janu

Penelope Janu writes contemporary fiction about clever and adventurous women who don’t mean to fall in love, but do. Penelope’s novels, whether coastal or rural, celebrate Australian communities.

Penelope is a lawyer with an interest in social justice issues and the environment. She has six children, a big dog, a distracting husband and never enough time to write. Now that she lives on a small farm, she also has an impossibly large garden, a vegetable patch and a herd of cattle that never get taken to market.

Penelope hopes readers will fall as passionately in love with her heroines and heroes as she invariably does. She has travelled to many places in the world but has lived most of her life in Sydney, Australia. When not reading or writing Penelope can be found walking the coastline, or in the bush (though she's not much of a walking companion as she plots as she walks).

Penelope loves to hear from readers so please contact her via ŷ, or on her website , or email her on [email protected].

Sapphire had had a troubled childhood now she was known as Sapphie Brown, school teacher at the little school in rural Horseshoe Hill; was well liked and protected by her friends. Her dearest wish was to buy the rundown old farmhouse which had belonged to her grandmother, one of the only places she’d felt safe and loved. It was also where she kept the horses she rescued, encouraging the local youths who needed guidance to participate in her equine therapy. Sapphie was chair of the environment committee in the town; her care and devotion to the causes she believed in never waned.

The day someone from her long ago past arrived in Horseshoe Hill was the day the memories returned. Matts Laaksonen had been childhood friend; he was Finnish, and deeply into protecting the environment an environmental engineer. His arrival in Australia was a shock to Sapphie, but when she discovered why he’d sought her out she was disappointed, angry and distressed. What had happened in her past? And what was her future going to bring? Was her long fought for happiness over, a pipedream? If only her mother and grandmother were still around

Starting From Scratch by Aussie author Penelope Janu was brilliant! I couldn’t fault one single word! This is only my second from her and it won’t be my last. Well written characters with great depth I loved Sapphie’s connection to the children she taught, to the twin boys she met, her compassion and caring for the racehorse she rescued as well as the other horses and their antics. The way she turned the life around of one particular teen: as well as overcoming her own fears. Yes, there was romance, but it was subtle and in the background to the main story. An excellent read, Starting From Scratch is one I highly recommend and it’s going onto my ‘top reads for the year list!

Starting from Scratch by Aussie author Penelope Janu was a delightful book to read. Sapphire was my favourite character and I warmed to pretty much straight away.

Growing up Sapphire didn’t have the best childhood and she coped the best way she knew how. Now happy and more content with her life, Sapphire works at Horseshoe Hill working as a teacher helping troubled kids. Her dream was to one day buy the farmhouse that had belonged to her beloved grandmother. The farmhouse held fond memories for Sapphire it was a place she she felt happiest and safe.

When Matts Laaksonen arrives back in town, Sapphire is a little shocked to see him. Growing up they had been childhood friends, but now seeing him again emotions and thoughts from the past resurface. Working together on an environmental issue Sapphire and Matts find they are both hiding secrets from their pasts, but will this bring them closer together or drive them apart forever?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I didn’t want it to end. This is only my second book by this author and I love her writing style her stories flow so well and are just a joy to read. Looking forward to reading her backlist of stories. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my digital copy to read and review.

Starting From Scratch was my first book by Penelope Janu and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a rural romance novel, but the story had so much more to it than a love story. Thank you for the surprise bookmail Harlequin Australia, another author to add to my list.

Sapphire, now Sapphie is such a lovely character. She had a tough upbringing, losing her mother and dealing with a controlling father, she is now happy at Horseshoe Hill working as a teacher and helping troubled kids. And then Matts Laaksonen arrives in town to warn her. Matts is her former best friend, Sapphie grew up with him and now all the emotions of the past are resurfacing. As they begin to work together on the environmental issues of the area, secrets from both of their pasts are exposed, but will it bring them closer or drive them apart.

Ah, what is a true rural romance without a bit of a dramatic backstory and a little taste of drama...the synopsis of this one includes the following line which really is a perfect summing up: "Misunderstandings and injured pride stand in the way of true love...". Sapphie is a strong, intelligent woman who is all about second chances after having a tough childhood with a drug addicted mother who died young, and a controlling father. Matts is a blast from her past who brings all the memories and emotions back when he visits her to warn her about an issue related to her father. It is clear they are attracted to one another but there are also some long standing complexities to sort out. Included in the storyline are some interesting environmental issues as well as exploring the benefits of having regular activities available for local youth in a safe place, particularly troubled youth. This is an easy read with likeable characters.
Overall: if you enjoy rural romances, give this one a go for sure.

After a minor role in Up on Horseshoe Hill, Sapphie Brown takes centre stage in Penelope Janu’s latest rural romance treat, Starting from Scratch. A story of hope, second chances, belief, pride, protection and love, Penelope Janu graces her readers with another truly heartwarming tale with her new release.

In Starting from Scratch we learn that lead female character Sapphie Brown has not had a privileged up bringing. Sapphie has been touched by difficult family relations and loss, but despite these setbacks, Horseshoe Hill has always been Sapphie’s constant. Sapphie has earned a great deal of respect in her local community due to her various efforts in protecting the local environment, supporting troubled teens and her animal rescue commitments. With her love for gardening and nature, Sapphie is giving soul. But the one thing Sapphie will not tend to is her love life, particularly her relationship with childhood friend Matts Laaksonen. Despite the clear attraction that surrounds Sapphie and Matts whenever they are near each other, Sapphie refuses to entertain the idea of a romance. Saphhie is still nursing the pain of her past and she cannot afford to trust anyone again. However, the attraction between Sapphie and Matts is undeniably strong. How much longer can Sapphie and Matts resist temptation to take their relationship to the next level?

When I need to forget a rather difficult working week, rural romance is always there waiting for me as a cleansing spirit. I was ready to be embraced by the characters of Penelope Janu’s latest release Starting from Scratch this long weekend in Western Australia. As a devoted fan of Penelope’s Janu’s work, I was rather excited about delving into this new story from a much-loved storyteller. Starting from Scratch was another winning title from Penelope Janu Australian rural romance virtuoso!

Friendship and romance may rule Starting from Scratch but the environmental themes prevalent in this book really makes this rural romance stand out from the crowd. This alternative slant on the standard Australian rural romance narrative made me feel as though I came away with a better appreciation for biodiversity and Australia’s wetlands, complete with its precious cargo of endangered species. This is down to the work of the lead characters Sapphie and Matts, who both have innate desire to preserve the local environment as best they can. As we learn through the progression of the storyline, this is a tough gig, but it is also incredibly instrumental to Australia’s environmental longevity. What a truly bold and important theme focus for a novel. I definitely received much more from this novel than I expected for a book marketed as a rural romance.

It was a delight to take a return visit to the quaint and quirky township of Horseshoe Hill. Janu seems to have expanded on her setting further this time and she has gifted her readers with a well outlined location, that felt authentic and very Australian. The sense of community surrounds Horseshoe Hill is obvious to the reader and I enjoyed falling into the step of the townsfolk of this welcoming community. I could see myself listening the advice of the locals while immersing myself in the fabric of Janu’s fictional town creation.

In Sapphie, we have a character that allows the reader to experience of a range of emotions. From hope, sacrifice, grief, loss, mistrust, resilience, altruism, positivity and happiness, Sapphie was a pleasure to be acquainted with. In Matts, we have a loveable lead, a man of morals and ideals, who is also a very hard worker. I admired Matts and I dearly wanted these two to get their act together. After a few false starts and some hurdles, eventually the reader is handed that much awaited happy ever after, what a relief!

A wholesome Australian rural romance awaits the reader in Starting from Scratch. Open your heart to Sapphie, Matts and the community of Horseshoe Hill, you won’t be disappointed!

Penelope Janu returns to the town of Horseshoe Hill to bring us Sapphie Brown’s story in this delightful, unputdownable, friends to lovers, stand alone romance. When they were children, Matts Laaksonen was Sapphie’s best friend and the boy she always wanted. Then they fall out and don’t see each other again for years. When Matts turns up in Horseshoe Hill, Sapphie wants nothing to do with him, but the two years, eight months and four days between them are no longer a barrier and Matts wants Sapphie. Their relationship stops and starts, fuelled by passion, unhinged by mistrust. Matts will have to convince Sapphie that our pasts don’t define our futures; she will have to show him the perfect imperfection of relationships and life. As usual, Ms Janu brings life to every page in Starting from Scratch with her attention to the small details of personality and matter. Environmental conservation is a key theme in this book, apt for a rural romance.

4.5⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

This is one of my most anticipated reads for the beginning of 2021, I always know I'm in for a great read when I pick up a Penelope Janu novel and meet her characters.

In her latest novel, Sapphie has so many imperfections, she is a great character, perfectly imperfect as her grandmother would have said.

I loved Matts too, he was solid and true to Sapphie.

I really enjoyed learning about water systems, wetlands, rivers, swamps, oh, and frogs. Penelope Janu has done a wonderful job of managing to educate us as we read without it becoming too formal.

There were so many secrets and misunderstandings, some really big secrets, that I wondered how they'd dig through them all, especially seeing how stubborn Sapphie could be. Their shared past is a complicated one and they've both been through a lot and both been hurt by things that happened. A lot of work had to go into renewing the relationship between Sapphie and Matts, it's a good job Matts was determined to reconnect because Sapphie was determined to keep him away.

Sapphie's dad was a piece of work, and I was hoping he'd get his comeuppance for past and present behaviours.

Sapphie's friend Hugh was lovely, I'd have liked to get to know him better, maybe he'll get his own book, but I'm still waiting for my favourite male, Nate, from previous novels to get his happy ever after, so I'm hoping that happens first.

Another great read, one to start the new year with.

Rural romance author, Penelope Janu, threads a love of the environment and horses through all her stories, with her latest novel Starting From Scratch tying both themes together in a warm, fresh and fun read. With a natural bent towards educating readers, Janu makes us care for the characters and their causes. Sapphie Brown has all she needs in Horseshoe Hill; a teaching job, a role helping delinquent youths through horse therapy and a position on the local environmental advocacy committee. But when Matts Laaksonen comes to town, with Nordic good looks, a short and sometimes abrupt Finnish manner and a diplomatic posting that could bring much-needed funding for their wetlands, she has no choice but to face her difficult past.

WOW where do I start, Penelope Janu has written a story filled with emotion, there were times I was tearing up and then I would want to yell and then I would be sighing, Sapphie and Matts were friends a long time ago as young children and teenagers and then everything fell apart. Now years later Matts has arrived in Horseshoe Hill to warn Sapphie and temperatures are heating up, this is a must read.

Sapphie Brown arrived in Horseshoe Hill as a very troubled teenager the loss of her grandmother and mother and a controlling father have left her a loner. She is now the local school teacher, she is chair of the environment committee and rescues horses and helps with troubled teenagers and the town loves Sapphie and Sapphie loves them. Now a person from her past has arrived and Sapphie’s emotions are thrown into turmoil, can she learn to trust.

Dr. Matts Laaksonen is Finnish although he grew up around the world and a lot of that time was spent with Sapphire, he cared so much for her they were the best of friends but life can through a lot of curve balls in peoples way and this happened with them and no matter how hard he tried to keep in contact with Sapphie, she ignored him, now he needs to let her know what is happening and he wants to be there to support her as secrets long buried are now being opened up.

Sapphie has been doing really well and now Matts has arrived in town, her emotions are all over the place, Matts had been everything to her years ago and the last thing she wants is to feel anything for him but her heart is telling her otherwise, he is caring but alpha in so many ways, will she be able to overcome the past and look to the future and Matts what can I say handsome, strong and caring and I loved him, Sapphie was always number one for him. It took some time lots of tears, will they come together as they should, will all the pent up emotions and secrets hold them apart or will they find the love and life they deserve, this is a beautiful story, there is so much to love about it I loved Sapphie and her flower making and the way she is with colours and the characters from town add so much to the story it was great catching up with them, and I do hope that we get to know more about Hugo and his frogs.

A fabulous story that I highly recommend MS Janu has bought a lot of environmental issues into this one and it was great learning about the wetlands and water saving.

Thank you Harlequin for sending us a copy to read and review.
A heartwarming tale that’s crisp with a subtle hint of romance and a thread of environmental issues that’s very informative.
Living in the community of Horseshoe Hill, schoolteacher Sapphie Brown has a place to finally call home.
A troubled childhood, a controlling father and the sad loss of her grandmother, she now has her hand in helping and running many different events to keep busy and give back.
Former best friend and engineer Matts Laaksonen arrives in town to warn Sapphie about a town issue.
Past emotions begin to surface and they have a chance to explore long ago feelings.
But buried secrets start to rise and could change everything and everyone involved.
A story that explores many different issues and a must read for rural fiction fans who love a book with a huge heart.
With the addition of the storyline of biodiversity and protecting the environment, it makes this plot a stand out.
Penelope has a wonderful flair for making characters complex and multidimensional which keeps the reader intrigued and curious about them and so much more fun to study.
Country town warmth, animals to love, a cast of diversity to love and dislike and a narration that’s interesting, enlightening and explanatory.
Take a chance and find out how the hero and heroine get their happy ever after.

This was the perfect post-Christmas read with a gorgeous rural setting, flawed but loveable characters, a timely environmental theme and a will-they-won't-they romance just this side of steamy.

I'm not usually a fan of first person narratives but the skill with which Penelope writes, drew me in from the very first page, along with the stunning descriptions of the paper flowers Sapphie, the main character creates. Sapphie is a smart, community minded young woman deeply embedded in the community of Horseshoe Hill, a town she wasn't born in but has come to call home. Wary of any kind of emotional involvement due to her troubled past, Sapphie keeps herself busy and has a pretty steady life until Matts Laaksonen steps into her life - and out of her past - to warn her of a threat against her family.

The relationship between these two takes quite a few twists and turns, as does the family drama unfolding alongside it. Along the way we meet plenty of the locals and see how important Sapphie has become to the townsfolk of Horseshoe. In addition to the environmental theme - which revolves around the drought and degradation of the local marshlands - there's a lovely storyline focusing on equine therapy involving some of the local troubled teens.

My favourite aspect of the book is the beautiful description of Sapphie's love of colour and flower-making, a skill inherited from her grandmother. The writing is breath-taking and the imagery so vivid I could see the world through Sapphie's eyes. If you love rural settings, romance and fabulous writing, you'll love this latest release from Ms Janu. I recommend you add it to the top of your pile.

Thanks to the author for an advance reading copy.

What a lovely read! Loved the romance, loved the backstory, the characters, the colours and the horses. Loved it all so much! I feel like I’ve learnt so much about our wetlands and marshs, not to mention our frogs...Also really appreciated the anxiety, the sad childhoods, the people on the spectrum...it’s not a play with barbies, it’s just a great novel.

Sapphire and Matts’s story of lost friendship, heartache and new beginnings is a triumph!
My heart is full of love for this wonderful story!
Purple. Violet. Lilac. Lavender.

Sapphie is beloved by all those in Horseshoe for her generous spirit and for her kindness- she opens her heart when it comes to the locals. Kids, animals and environmental issues are high on her list of priorities, and the bright paper flowers she makes reflect the care she gives to others.
But memories of a difficult childhood are stirred when handsome, confident Matts Laasksonen appears with a slightly prickly attitude. The pair share a long history but Sapphie has what she wants her farmhouse, an assortment horses –she’s a popular teacher and a valued member of the community...
Matts is highly regarded globally as an environmental engineer- so why is he really here? Sapphie has plans for the future that have never included him...
But secrets from the past are provoked when Matts delivers a message from Sapphie’s estranged father.
And as Sapphie is challenged to trust the man she left behind their shared past reveals secrets long buried beneath the surface.

Penelope Janu’s clever handling of a beautiful story made my day. Sapphie is awkward and broken but has a beautiful glow that shines through the pages. Matts is... well Matt’s is the kind of man you should only dare to dream about! I was completely immersed in Horseshoe yesterday and I’m sorry to have to leave it behind.
Beautiful. Quirky. Memorable. Heartwarming.

Starting from Scratch by author Penelope Janu was an enjoyable read, depicting complex characters with some unexpected twists. Matts and Sapphie’s intertwined history added voluminous points in the narrative, which supported their seemingly complex character attributes. The story was transfixing where I could not put the book down. Sapphire’s persona held a mix of strength and fragility and Matts steadfastness proved a perfect match during the course of the read. Antics from both characters provided adequate surprises in the novel for reader entertainment. Starting from Scratch by author Penelope Janu is set amongst a rural backdrop with a mix of themes, including the importance of protecting the environment. I have read all of Ms Janu’s books, and Starting from Scratch is another novel that did not disappoint.

Starting From Scratch is what rural romance is all about for me. Penelope Janu artfully intertwines her deep knowledge of the Australian Bush, with a sensual love story against a backdrop of political intrigue. Sapphie is such a wonderful heroine, sensitive, strong, and deeply committed to her work as a teacher, her love of the farm she lives on, and the memories of her mother and grandmother. And then of course there is Matts. For Sapphie there has always been Matts... I have to say I totally fell in love with enigmatic environmentalist Matts and how his childhood friendship with Sapphie evolves with such tenderness and passion. Utterly Beautiful!

“I use glue to join the petals of my flowers. What do I use to join the pieces of my heart?

Starting From Scratch encapsulates everything I love about the romance genre and so much more. Once again Penelope Janu gives us an intelligent, adventurous, emotionally complex, 3 dimensional heroine in Sapphie Brown, with a deep wound who finds love but doesn’t need a man to ‘save her. Janu’s heroes are always equally well drawn, always drop dead gorgeous (of course!), but educated, interesting men like Matts Laaksonen. Starting From Scratch addresses some important environmental issues too and this grounds the plot and leaves the reader with a greater awareness of in this case the plight of the wetlands, as seen through the eyes of the characters rather than being forced.

The author has a beautiful turn of phrase and the rural backdrop feels like a character in itself. I found myself reading several passages over and over to absorb the poetry of the prose. There is also Janu’s trademark wit which provides wry humour and a lightness to the writing too. A go-to author for rural romance for the head as well as the heart.

Starting from Scratch is about love, betrayal and the love of a small rural community. Sapphie Brown thought she had a great life in Horseshoe Hill, running the local school and a troubled teens youth centre. One day a childhood friend Matts Laaksonen came into town and became part of the environment committee that Sapphie chaired. However, unbeknown to Sapphie, this encounter with Matts will change her life forever. The readers of Starting from Scratch will continue to follow Sapphie and Matts to find out what happens.

Starting From Scratch is another fantastic book by Penelope Janu. I had no trouble engaging with the characters and the plot of this book. Starting From Scratch is another book that I had trouble putting down. I love Penelope Janu's portrayal of her characters and how they interact with each other throughout this book. Starting From Scratch is well written and researched by Penelope Janu. I like Penelope Janu description of the settings of Starting From Scratch that allowed me to imagine be part of the book's plot.

The readers of Starting From Scratch will understand the importance of using Horses in therapy for troubled teens. Also, the readers of Starting From Scratch will learn about making paper flowers.

I recommend this book.

I loved this. No surprises there - I adore Penelope Janu's writing.
While I didn't quite devour this like I have, Up on Horseshoe Hill and In The Deep End and On The Right Track, I still thought Sapphie and Matts made a lovely couple, and the backdrop of Hugo and all the kids in the equestrian program were icing on the cake.
Lovely pacy first person POV, present tense writing. I adore this writing style when it's done well and Pen Janu does it amazingly well!

I love Penelope Janu's books. And this one certainly didn't disappoint. I call Pen's books 'smart and sexy' because there's always something interesting to learn from her well-crafted story, her flawed but relatable characters and let's not forget. . . a love story to set your heart fluttering.
I loved Sapphie's story and I can't wait to see what Penelope does next.

Just finished reading this gem. The story follows Sapphie who has gone through quite a lot including the death of her Mum and Gran and estrangement from her father. Rightly so, she has trust issues which come into play when her childhood friend comes back into her life. Without giving too much away, I really enjoyed following Sapphie’s development throughout the novel especially as she deals with a lot of issues from her past. This is the first time I have read anything from Penelope Janu and I’ll definitely be indulging in some more of her work.

There’s nothing better than starting the New Year with a wonderful book I deliberately made this book my first read for 2021 because I felt like it would deliver that, based on previous experience and I was right.

Starting From Scratch is set in the same location as Penelope Janu’s previous book, Up On Horseshoe Hill with a few familiar faces appearing. Sapphie is a local primary school teacher who also chairs an environmental committee and works with troubled children, including using horses as equine therapy. In Horseshoe Hill, Sapphie has found a home that was lacking in her formative years after her parent’s trouble marriage, the postings overseas for her father’s work and the deaths of some of the people she loved most in the world. Sapphie found a new home with a foster family despite her father still being alive and from there, she began to build the existence she lives today. Which is threatened when her childhood best friend, Matts Laaksonen reappears in her life and gives her the kind of news that turns it upside down.

Sapphie is brave and determined she’s experienced a lot of pain and loss in her life and even though she’s damaged, she’s not broken. She has a lot of things she throws herself into. She’s a huge part of the local community and she’s great with her kids, who worship her and she can often get through to the local teenagers, who know that she’ll forgive them their mistakes and help them make things right. She has several rescue horses and she’s passionate about them and the old schoolhouse which she is leasing with the option to buy, once she’s saved a little more. She has friends including Jet from Up On Horseshoe Hill and purpose even though for Sapphie, there’s not really anyone to share this life with.

Enter Matts, who was her best fried when their fathers were posted together first in Argentina and then Canberra. Matts is three years older, which complicated their friendship as they grew older but when they were younger, they were often inseparable. Years ago, Sapphie cut Matts off for a betrayal and they haven’t spoken since, until he appears in her backyard. It brings about a lot of complex feelings for Sapphie, especially when Matts seems to want to spend more time in her local area. As there are in many (perhaps all?) of Penelope Janu’s other books, there’s a strong environmental concern, this time about wetlands in western NSW and the usage of them, how important they are as habitats, for a myriad of species, including endangered ones and how the changing climate and over draining of them mostly from large, corporate owned farms, is impacting severely. I really enjoyed a lot of the information about the wetlands as well as the trip they take. Stuff like this is always a concern to me, the way in which rivers are diverted (the Murray-Darling has loads going on) and wetlands are drained or also diverted to the way of big farms. I know you need water to grow things but if you alter or destroy these habitats, the ramifications are so huge.

This story went in some unexpected places, particularly concerning the background in the foreign country. I loved Sapphie’s relationship with her grandmother, including the making of the paper flowers. I also think a lot about colours and naming them (there’s a reason I have so many coloured markers and pens, I always need what I feel is the ‘right colour for something) and her devotion to her mother and her unwillingness to tarnish her reputation when she is no longer able to defend herself. There’s a good fleshing out of Matts and Sapphie’s backstory, as well as expressing a younger Sapphie’s innocence at the change in Matts towards her when he’s about 18. And in the present, Sapphie is still a little naive in some ways, prickly and defensive but vulnerable too and still ripe for being used as a tool by one person who should be trying to protect her, not manipulate her to his advantage and render her helpless in the new life she has slowly built for herself.

I loved this revisiting Horseshoe Hill was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing familiar faces like Gus and of course, Jet and Finn. I also liked Hugo and felt like there might’ve been a hint of a suggestion that he might get his own book one day in the future. But Sapphie really shone in this as a character, shaped by her past but brave enough to be embracing her future and I enjoyed Matts patience and quiet determination. Like the others, this ticked all my romance boxes.

Like many, I first met Sapphire (Sapphie) Brown in 𝕌𝕡 𝕠𝕟 ℍ𝕠𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕤𝕙𝕠 ℍ𝕚𝕝. The former foster child turned school teacher had intrigued me, so I was really happy to discover that Sapphie had her own story!

In 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕗𝕣𝕠𝕞 𝕊𝕔𝕣𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙, we learn about the circumstances that led Sapphie to Horseshoe Hill, and being fostered by Ma and Pa Hargreaves. Before ending up homeless at the age of sixteen, Sapphie had led a privileged life as daughter of a bureaucratic. Growing up in Argentina, Sapphie's best friend was Matts Laaksonen, a Finnish lad who's father was equally as influential.

Their friendship was ruined when Sapphie was fifteen, after a horrible argument. For years, they hadn't spoken to one another. Until one night Matts turns up outside the farmhouse Sapphie desperately wants to make a life in.

It's not only Matts that has returned from the past. Sapphie's father also wants to reconnect with his daughter- for his own gain. Problems that occured back in Argentina has threatened her father's political stance, and poor Sapphie is given a tough ultimation.

Sapphie has always meant to end up in Horseshoe Hill, but is she meant to be with Matts as well? Our heroine is fierce and determined, but will all these obstacles come between her and her happy ending?

It's another warm and inviting novel from Penelope. She knows how to engage her readers with interesting subplots- this time about environmentalism. If that topic doesn't interest you in the slightest, I'm sure Sapphie's story will!

Delighted to finally get my hands on this fab new release from Penelope Janu after wresting it away from my husband! He loves Penelope's books and snatches them away from me each year for his own summer reading pile. Apart from the gorgeous romance (and excellent you-know-what!) we both loved the environmental angle to this one. Penelope's research into the destruction and potential solutions to the issues in Australia's wetlands was so interesting and we loved the way she incorporated it into the story using a cast of fantastic local characters.

The romance between once-childhood friends Sapphie and hunky Matts kept the pages turning, as did the intriguing plot which centred on a mystery involving their parents and a love story of another kind.

Penelope has a flair for exploring more complex, layered relationships than the purely romantic. In this novel, she dives into relationships between parents and children which, as she ably demonstrates in the case of Sapphie's ruthless politically-fuelled father, is not always unconditional.

An excellent read that ticks all the boxes for me (and my novel-stealing husband! Although he insists on calling it 'novel-borrowing' ;-))

What a joy it has been to return to Horseshoe Hill for Starting From Scratch, Penelope Janu’s latest novel. I think this one may have been challenging to write as Saphie Brown, the heroine of this story, is such a complex character. Learning to trust is central to Sapphie’s personal development. As this story unfolds and with the challenges she faced as a teenager that is not an easy thing for her to do. I loved her for both her flaws and her resilience and drive, while the crepe paper flowers she makes throughout this story sound absolutely exquisite. Hero Matts Laaksonen, a Finnish environmental engineer in Australia to study the Macquarie Marshes and advise governments and communities about how to improve their health, is a man I could easily fall for. His relationship with Sapphie is a bit like a ping pong match with trust ebbing and flowing, thanks largely to the machinations of her truly vile father. This story grew on me more and more as I got to know Sapphie, Matts and the peripheral characters, including Sapphie’s collection of rescue horses, that made it feel so real. This is another one for my keeper shelf.
