FLUENCY, the story that started it all:
Dr. Jane Holloway is a language savant, living a staid academic life, studying dead languages. But when NASA offers her a spot on a team that will be exploring a derelict alien ship found decades before in the asteroid belt, she shoves aside her discomfort to go on an adventure.
Except the ship is far from derelict.
Or unoccupied.
What she assumed would be more of an archeological dig, turns into a fight for her life and the lives of her teammates as the mission devolves into chaos.
And all along Jane is receiving strange psychic transmissions that she can’t explain, can’t quite believe are real, and can’t reveal to her team, for fear they’ll assume she’s gone insane.
Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien voice wants from her. As the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien’s help to survive.
As a child growing up in rural Illinois, I had the wild outdoors, a budding imagination, and books for company. My interest in science fiction was piqued early on when a family friend loaned me a Ray Bradbury compilation, among loads of other wonderful scifi books.
Fluency (Book 1) Carindi (Short Story) The Fall of the Percedus (Short Story) Remanence (Book 2) The Grove (Short Story) Inheritance (Book3)
When this Codex was published and the Author announced it on Twitter, Inhaftiert to buy it. Not only as ebook, but also in printed form.
I loved the story before this codex came out, so giving 5/5 Stars is probably no surprise.
Here are a few comments on every book and story within and remember, the confluence series consists of six book from which number six will be published in 2021, so use your corona time to read up on the first five.
From here on you will find mild spoilers of the book contents. Nothing too revealing of the story in my opinion, but stop reading if you want to discover all by yourself.
Fluency: —â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä The beginning. We learn about our main characters and of the things that make it difficult when two species with different social behaviour and standards meet and try to get the other one to help.
But we learn of a new world opening for Jane, one of our main protagonists, a world of new technologies, forms of communication and perhaps a way to find love.
Carindi: —â¶Ä”â¶Ä- A nice short story. Here we meet Ei‘Pio, which whom we will become acquainted in book 2 if I remember correctly. Well; we surely learn about sectillian society.
Children are without gender at birth. When reaching puberty/adolescence, then then can choose what they want to be and I think this is marvelous and we need this in our society. It probably would take away lots of problems for some people.
The Fall of The Percedus: —â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä”—â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä”—â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä
This is the story of a sectillian scientist and also the origin story of something that made us a pornography Problems in Fluency. So, it was a nice interlude and we also got a glimpse into another danger about we already learned in book 1.
Remanence: —â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä”—â€
So, landing on a Planet, Meeting the locals, some penis grabbing and leaving the planet.
Basically that‘s it ;)
Star Wars and Star Trek references are there and a fragile male ego, but he comes around. So, enjoy the second book.
And, the old saying still holds true: Every landing after which you are still able to walk is a good landing.
The Grove —â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â€
The last of the short stories in this collection.
Trees, Spaceships, Warp Drives. A nice interlude before we reach book three and the second string of the story, first time away from Jane and get crew.
Inheritance —â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â¶Ä”â€-
Abductions, Slavetrade, the joy of hunting, mortal enemies, Luke being trained by Vader or something like that. Adam forever and a great final fight. Well, no lightsabers. Sorry.
And a cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next part of the series.
Overall a great trilogy so far and it makes you longing for the continuation to find out about all those lose ends.
I have read this series before, and still wanted to buy this edition for the two short stories that were new to me. I ended up re-reading the entire set. Ms. Wells is an excellent world builder, the worlds she constructs in this set and the following books are wonderful, believable, and very real. The social constructs are well thought out and the interpersonal relationships feel very real and believable. The only trouble I had was with the third book. I am not big on fighting and hunting for the sake of it. As a harrowing situation for the lead character to fall into, it is indeed harrowing and if you like that sort of thing you will love this book, too. I tend to get too involved in a story to really enjoy that sort of thing. The first time I read it I had a hard time putting it down, this time I sort of cringed but kept on reading. I look forward to the sixth book in the series and will buy it as soon as it is out. Thanks Ms. Wells.
I guess there was a reason I never came back to this series even though it was not finished. I got bored of it after the third book and this time I couldn't even finish the third book. The new stories were interesting but I didn't like the how the third book portrayed the protagonist of the last story. I also didn't like reading the villain.
I have a new author to add to my favorites list. Jennifer Foehner Wells! This series rocks. Couldn't stop reading. Can't wait to continue this series. Anyone who likes good action science fiction will love this.
