Book 8 of the popular series Delphi in Space. The McCormacks are finally going to start an Earth Colony and the Paraxeans are finally getting a home. Catie is going to the Academy and Marc is going to Artemis. What will it take for both of them to survive their new challenges? Will Catie’s cover hold? Will Marc be able to get the colony moving to self-sufficiency? Will the aliens who are heading to Artemis give him the time he needs. What will happen on Earth as people start leaving.
Bob Blanton has been an avid reader ever since his mother first took him to a library at age five. He has toyed with writing for years since college but was always too busy to start a novel. The "stone series" developed almost by itself as he was trying to sleep on long flights to Asia and Europe. He managed to write it and two follow-on novels while he was working, but never had the time to polish them. After he retired to the beach in Mexico, the only thing that competes with writing is the sound of the ocean and sunsets over the water. Now that he has published his series, he hopes you enjoy reading them as much as he has had writing them. Check back for other books as he continues to ply his new trade.
Now that he has published his series, he hopes you enjoy reading about Matthew and his developing powers as much as he has enjoyed writing about them.
I enjoyed the book, which was easy to read, but too much of the book was meetings, often going over the same ground or just choosing new employees. I wasn't impressed with the Academy stuff, although I would have liked more of Catie, just not in the academy. However I would probably still have given 4 stars. Having said that, there were a couple of things that annoyed me about the book. First Marc knows there is an aggressive alien spaceship on the way, yet they don’t seem to be doing anything to prepare for a possible conflict. I found this quite reprehensible especially as he doesn’t appear to have warned the colonists that in less than a year they might be blasted out of existence. Secondly I found what was happening on ‘Artemis just ridiculous.
Overall I have given 3 stars, although I nearly gave only 2, I just hope that the next book is better.
I just blew through all the books in this series (1-9 as I’m certain more are coming). As a result I am doing one review for all the books. The top item is: these books are significantly better than 95% of self-published books. Book one is by far the worst of the series and it is still okay. Book one’s main problem is that it lacks story resolution, something I hate and generally do not forgive. Here, however, the author tells a more character driven story which reduces the need for a firm resolution. In fact another review for book 9 caught my eye and it was complaining about a lack action, something I would typically complain about as well but did not even consider as the development of the characters was fascinating.
After book one the author uses a recipe: resolve main story but end on a teaser for the next book. Personally I find using teasers a bad idea as it distracts from the story just told. It also seems to me that a truly competent author would not require teasers as readers would come back for more without them. Oddly enough I am reminded of Lilian Jackson Braun’s “Cat Who series. It was also character driven and yet she never felt the need to end one of her books with a teaser for the next book (and I read this entire series even though I am not a mystery reader).
I am a 77 year old SciFi fan. Grew up on Tom Corbett, Swift Jr. Graduated to Heinlein, Asimov's, and Paul Anderson. This series equals an exceeds many of them. I am pissed that this could be the last one in the series. You did end with a teaser to continue. Cudos to your editing team, and thank you for keeping me up all night reading. 4 stars because no one is perfect and all have room for improvement. :-)
You really blew it in the last book. On why you justified prostition rings. In earlier books you had a big section about a few looses who didn't want to work. And you forced them or made them leave. But to justify prostitution especially with John and the women being beaten or worse. Rings that the men make the money and they are forced to submit. Is ok, it's just the way it is. You didn't even denounce little children being raped for money. Or the horror of being a female slave. No biggie. Yes there will always be people who want to cut corners scam. And there always will be a small percent who just aren't ho est and are greedy and amoral. But if you give them the opportunities like you do in these books then there will be few. You should medically screen personalities that are screwed up. Damaged people abused people who abuse people. People react two ways to trauma. One they do so by being empathetic and not wanting others to have to go through the same. Or the abused bullied traumatized who grow up to abuse. Because they think it protects them, that power is a way to be safe. They become what they fear. Crime is complicated. But with true opportunity and a way to screen out the lagers. There wouldn't be much. Allowing women being abused in your books as just life. Is sad. And very male. The very few extremely over sexed women 1% of total population maybe would be a prostitute that didn't have to. What is attractive about having sex with men. Where is the good in that. Most men are disgusting. It's only the sex drive in males that you think should be met as natural. That were you are wrong. And have continued to allow women to be abused and think they are doing it because they want to. Saves you guys from feeling guilty. Or a big price tag if you had to pay for the few women who truly decided to do that as a job. If they truly didn't have to. Bad job
Good world building, not enough action in the book, good use of characters.
First of all I enjoyed the artificial intelligence ADI, I think she should be used more. I’m happy to see in this book that there was more character development with Mark since he was supposed to be the main protagonist in the series. The author gave time for additional characters in the series to develop somewhat, it was not all centered around Katie. Don’t get me wrong, like I said in an earlier review Katie is a joy. But the Siri‘s centers too much on her instead of her dad. After all he is supposedly the captain and the artificial intelligence assigned herself to him. What I do not like in the series is there is not enough serious repercussions when things happen to characters such as Sophiais betrayal of Katie. It’s just washed away and swept under the rug, that doesn’t happen in real life such serious betrayals usually have consequences and usually those consequences contain anger and heartache. The other thing I personally do not like is that Samantha has come on and taking a pre-eminent role in the book and series too fast too far and too quickly in the short period of time she has been with Mark. The series needs to become more balanced with world building, more science-fiction, and more action. That’s the only reason I have not given this particular book a five star rating. Really fun read if you haven’t read the series start from book one highly recommend it
I had a feeling when I began the first chapter of this book that I had had enough of this series. My feeling was confirmed when almost half of the beginning of the book was devoted to the activities of Catie, the teenaged daughter of the guy who discovered the alien spaceship. This series could better be titles the adventures of Catie my teenaged daughter. This book, like its predecessors if full of the activities of Catie, first ocean diving, then paint ball games, then exercise and personal training with her security staff, and now her adventures at the "academy". And most of the academy stuff is physical activity and little of no classroom scientific training. In fact, in my opinion her abilities, as a 12- to 15-year-old teen have been grossly overstated in the previous books. I cannot believe that a teenager could, without formal training and instruction in engineering fields and physics could design spaceships and planes to fly around the Earth. That is just not real to me.
On the other hand, the author has missed great opportunities are real science fiction writing. There is barely a paragraph on the description of the Sirika, the space ship that he found. When he discovered the planets to be colonized, he has devoted barely a paragraph to describing the planets, their vegetation, their animals, their seas, and a general description of their terrain.
One person outlook on a potential future. I enjoyed the read.
I've read all 8 books some were better than others. I read for enjoyment, love a potential realistic story which includes, drama, heart break, individual opinions, politics, success, villains, and fantasy. This series has it all and I can't wait for book 9.
The story starts laying out a realistic foundation and the discovery of a starship and impending invasion of an alien species. The confusion and then the recognition of the responsibility that goes with that discovery is the basis of the story. Marc, his brother and his daughter are smarter than the average bear. They become a very close group planning moves that will lead to the end game. Their careful planning, selection of helpers and some knowledge of government and it's beauarucy allows them to become financially independent.
The story has all the drama of building an empire with all the perks, medical, schools, new technology, and space exploration with colonization. It's a good read, hope you enjoy it.
Up to now have really enjoyed this series, however found this book something of a disappointment. The problem being not a lot happens to move the story along, it feels like a placeholder. It's not badly written and is up to the authors usual standard. It's made of many parts. The hero's daughter goes to military academy and faces the usual challenges of trying not to stand out and be a good cadet handle bullying etc. This sort of tale I will admit personally does not float my boat and for me was the worse part of this volume. Then there was the usual political manouverings with the Earth based governments, which was ok. The best part was the setting up of the first off world colony and the interesting and realistic issues it brought.
As such it was an ok chapter in the story and I'll stick with it as interesting things are promised for the next book.
OK, minor small word editing errors, strong alcohol culture.
This is a fun series that I have enjoyed reading. The author seems to have some issues defining his target audience. The language is simplistic enough for a youth readership, the books are on the moderately short side, there is no sex or graphically gruesome carnage, the language is clean, a focal character starts out as a super powered twelve year old girl, all pointing to sixth / seventh grade target. On the other hand the heavy use of scotch and other alcohol consumption is disturbing to American sensibilities.
These books are most definitely not master works of art, and leave a lot to be desired as far as descriptive language goes - most of the book reads like a list of events or sentences rather than a story - but damn if it isn’t still interesting, exciting, and some damn good wish fulfillment. I’m rating five stars because (amazons review system is crap, and) it helps the author, and I want him to keep publishing, but in reality my rating is 3 stars for overall quality, and 4 stars for my overall enjoyment. I’m looking forward to more sequels!
As a rule I never give perfect scores. However, despite the characters almost always being a little too perfect, the pace of the story, the overall development of the story, and the attention to detail still out this at the top of the range for this type of fiction.
One could wish the books were longer, but this kind of production is what the Amazon unlimited scheme is about.
I am glad to see another author working, and doing, well.
To anyone contemplating the series, you won't be wasting your time.
I have read all the previous books in this series and they have not disappointed me yet. The stories just keep getting better and more interesting, once I open a book I rarely put it down without reading several chapters. Every time I finish a book I am already super excited about opening the next one in the series!
I would recommend this series to anyone interested in space exploration and adventure in general. Just open up one of these books and I am quite sure you will have a hard time putting it down again.
This book had a nice balance of hardships with the problems of what may be faced with colonization of a new planet. I also liked how Catie took to heart the whole need of learning to follow and not just leading. I also really liked that twist on her not getting an A on that paper, knocking her back on her heels with some introspection was a nice addition to the story.
Marc and his daughter Catie are at the forefront with Marc making Catie attend the new Delphi military school. Basic training is the pits for her as she forces herself to suck it up deal with the bullying and not stand out. President Marc must keep the Delphi Nation and Federation on track while setting up the first extraterrestrial colonies. I like the action, humor, and touch of romance. I look forward to the next book.
While I continue to enjoy this series, certain aspects detract from the book in my mind: Everyone is perfect - no one makes any real mistakes and everyone acts calm and reasoned. Catie especially is becoming annoying in my mind in this way, a bit of a Superman like character. This book is a fun read, but lacks any real tension. I did enjoy the colonization effort and the political things which happen related to that, quite believable.
Blanton, Bob. Delphi Colony. Delphi in Space No. 8. Kindle, 2020. Catie’s parents are finally showing her some tough love and making her go to a military academy to learn how to follow as well as lead. Meanwhile the parents, tired of running Delphi, decide to relocate to the Artemis colony. The academy stuff is about what you would expect, and the colony stuff lacks the energy of some of the earlier volumes. Ho. Hum. Three stars.
Welp, who said things would be easy establishing world peace and then starting two interstellar colonies. Though, you have to admit, when it's all said and done, things aren't quite as bad as they could have been.
That said, fun story. I'm really enjoying getting to see Catie grow up and develope as a character. Looking forward to the next story!
Exciting and fun to read about Catie at the academy. I thought for sure she would blow her cover but so far she is doing OK. Plus Marc and Samantha are now on the planet Artemis which is way cool. Have been loving reading this book and can't wait to dig into the next one.
This was a little different than the other books with Catie not sure how to spell her name but with her away and they are just starting to get the new planets up and running they are having their own little problems let alone the alien space ship is coming at them and they don't have a plan yet. On to the next one .
This ones about Cat going to military academy. Love it.
Cat is a Super-competant and a leader, but needs more grounding in teamwork, hence her undercover enrollment in Delphi Academy. Meanwhile, a shipfull of agressive aliens is heading for the system that the humans have colonized. Oh yes, they have gigawatt laser technology. What could go awry?
Good book. Interesting turn of events. No space battles in this one but setup of a colony on a planet with the challenges on that. Waiting to see what happens next.
The adventures and challenges continue to entertain and the plot is fascinating and thought provoking. Great anticipation for the next book and the coming threat to the colonies.
I am really amazed at how easy it was to get back into this story. The Author should hold classes for other authors on how to keep their readers into a series. This story of a guy who finds a spaceship and starts his own nation is absolutely fantastic.
New story threads and continued character development for existing MCs. While it can be a bit simplistic, I still enjoy this series. Characters remain true to form, and the tension or conflicts are well managed.
My last review stated that something was missing but I couldn't put it into words, this story fixed that by giving other characters time and attention. A great story!
Books 1-7 kept me going. The best thing about book 8 was getting to book 9. I really thought some of the labor/personnel issues were unrealistic for the situation.
The storylines keep me wanting more! When will Catie graduate, will anyone realise her true identity? What will happen when the new aliens arrive? When will the next book be here?
The story kept moving along and stayed interesting. The part about the colony supplies was good. You had enough about people to make it good. This whole series is basically about Catie .
The company has grown, further developed their technology, and are starting a colony outside the Sol system. Like most startups there are problems to be solved. A good read.
