Have you always wanted to be a writer? I'm an attorney and have done a lot of technical writing, but knew I wanted to write novels. I thought I'd find time when I retired. Fate stepped in, as it often does, and put me on this path sooner. I broke my neck in an auto accident and suffered from double vision for months. I couldn't read or watch TV, so I conceived the plot for my Rosemont series.
Why did you decide to write a series? I prefer television series to movies. The longer format of television allows for deeper character development. The same holds true for series fiction. I like to fall in love with a character or hate a character (but root for them to change their ways). I feel like Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi from Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies' Detective Agency series are old friends. I wanted to recreate that sort of connection in the Rosemont series.
What other authors do you read or admire? I'm a fan of women's fiction, women's sagas, romantic suspense, domestic suspense, crime fiction, and romance. I love Rosamunde Pilcher's later trilogy -The Shell Seekers, Coming Home, and September. Jan Karon's Mitford series creates an enchanting world, as does Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove. My Rosemont series is set in the current day, but I've tried to capture a feeling of camaraderie and connection (among the good guys) that takes us back to a slightly simpler time and place.
What are your favorite books? In addition to the works I've already mentioned, I adored A Man Called One, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and A Long Way from Chicago.
Who has had the greatest influence on your author life? My dad--without question. He told me or read me a bedtime story every night of my childhood, often adding his own twists and turns to the plots or dialogue. He had an incredible, gentle sense of humor. He also wrote novels--who-done-its--when he retired.
What are the high points of your author journey? There are 3 things I hold very 1) hearing from readers--especially newly blind adults--that my Guiding Emilyseries has given then hope and provided comfort, 2) having my novella The Christmas Club made into a Hallmark Channel movie of the same name (2019), and 3) seeing my name on the USA Today Bestseller List.
What of your own interests have you written about in the Rosemont series? I love my home and all things related to cooking, gardening, decorating, and entertaining. I lovecelebrating all of the seasons and I change my decor for Easter, 4th of July, fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring.
USA Today Bestselling Author Barbara Hinske is an attorney who recently left the practice of law to pursue her career as a full-time novelist. She inherited the fiction gene from her father who wrote mysteries when he retired and told her a story every night of her childhood. Barbara is the bestselling author of the beloved Rosemont series; the acclaimed Guiding Emily series; a collection of murder mystery thrillers in her "Who's There?" collection; and her sweet Christmas novellas The Christmas Club (adapted for the Hallmark Channel in 2019), Paws & Pastries, and No Matter How Far.
She and her husband share their own Rosemont with two adorable and spoiled dogs. She is besotted with decorating, entertaining, cooking and gardening. Now that her novel The Christmas Club has been made into a Hallmark Channel movie, she is completely star-struck and thrilled to have her work on the screen.
Heartwarming, cozy story. Kind people helping good people, great food, great company, and a sweet rescue pet. I’m looking forward to reading the next story. I highly recommend!
I love gentle reads like this! Easy to fall in love with all the characters,(except the unfaithful husband). The author gives just enough detail about each of their lives to get the reader interested, and definitely wanting to know more. Add in a stray dog on Christmas Eve, and you’ve got a winner! Surely this will be a series of books; it would be mean to leave me wondering forever what happened to these wonderful characters! Thanks to Kindle Unlimited for a free digital copy. I’ll be starting “Guiding Emily by this author very soon!
The final miles of Clara Conway's journey home were fraught with challenges, marked by bad weather and the painful discovery of her husband's latest deceit. The unexpected loss of her mother, coupled with the inheritance she received and a husband who had never been supportive of her dream, became a catalyst to seek a fresh start. Clara set her sights westward, determined to find the ideal city to establish her long-held dream of opening a bakery. However, fate intervened when her car broke down, leading her to Andy's Automotive in the quaint town of Pinewood. Will this stop mark the beginning of Clara's new chapter, or is it merely a temporary setback? What will Clara decide?
What a heartwarming story about new beginnings! The small-town setting is brimming with cozy charm. Instead of dwelling on the delays Clara faces, she maintains a positive attitude and shares her talent. The individuals she encounters in Pinewood, with their genuine warmth, kindness, and friendliness, surround Clara with a comforting embrace. Clara and the people she meets in Pinewood are individuals you would love to know, especially given her circumstances. The narrative is uplifting.
This is my first introduction to the author's writing, and I'm eager to explore more of her work, particularly the next book in the series. I can't wait to see where Clara's journey takes her next!
This was a super easy read, but didn’t offer much beyond the basics. I thought Clara’s mission to move on from her past and follow her dreams was a cute idea, but the story itself was pretty surface-level. It lacked deep character development or any major plot twists. And despite the title, the dog didn’t appear until the last 10-15 pages (and honestly didn’t really contribute much to the book anyway).
When Clara returned home from her Mother's funeral she discovers her husband hasn't slept at home but at his mistress' house. She has had enough so she gets everything packed up that she wants, which isn't much, & writes a note stating she is done then she starts driving west. She gets stranded by car trouble in Pinewood. She has the best Thanksgiving in a really long time. Starts singing with choir at church for Christmas concert. By the time her car is fixed she has become close to some of the people & hates the thought of being alone in a strange place.
The story is great & you will love the way this story ends.
This is the first in the series. The main character is Clara. Clara comes home from burying her mother to find that the jerk she is married to has not broken it off with his girl friend. Clara decides she has had enough and leaves him a note saying Bye I'm getting a divorce. She loads up the car and heads out, not sure where she is going. When her car brakes down leaving her stranded for almost a month, she fills her time baking with the owners of the diner across the parking lot. A lot can happen in a month and does.
The perfect read for a lazy fall weekend. Grab your blanket, and some hot apple cider and cozy up with this story. But be warned, it'll make you hungry.
This story was like an appetizer, now I want more! Does Clara settle down? Does Noelle find her forever home with Clara? Does Clara ask Kurt to help her deal with her miserable husband? How long does it take to get her shop up and running? Do Clara and Kurt finally get together? I'm still hungry........
Author Barbara Hinske has brought readers an absolutely delightful read just in time for the Holidays! PAWS AND PASTRIES is the beautiful story of a broken woman beginning to find her way in the most unlikely place and being saved by the kindness and love of strangers.
Clara Conway has been dealt with back to back devastating news. Her beloved Mother has passed away after suffering a major stroke. Clara stayed in town long enough to pack up the treasures she wanted, list her Mom’s house with a Realtor and meet with her Mom’s attorney. As an only child, the legal papers were pretty straightforward. Clara was pleasantly surprised at her Mom’s money management skills and the extra nice gift she unexpectedly left for her. She also left her a note to use the money for herself.
Clara decided to come home a day early. She drove long hours and out of force of habit, she decided to do a bit of “creep-checking on her husband, the dentist who had been having an ongoing affair with his dental assistant. Of course, he had sworn his love to Clara and promised he broke the affair off. It came as no shock to her to see his very unique high end sports car parked outside his paramour’s home!
Clara was done! After a day of reflection, she packed up the few belongings she cared anything about and left. Where was she going? Destination Unknown! She just knew that her future included her dream of owning and operating her own Pastry Shop. Her whole life had been spent in preparation for this moment from her education, internships, past employments, everything led her to being ready NOW.
As Clara traveled, she had car trouble and ended up in Pinewood. As often happens in a smaller town, the mechanic referred her to a Motel & Restaurant. They had to order the part for her foreign car so she was stranded or was she? Clara is fascinated with all things at this unique Restaurant! The Menu is unique, the food delicious and the desserts are out of this world! As she starts talking with the owners, they each discover the other has a need. They also rescue stray animals and Clara ends up with a special companion she has no idea she wants or needs until Noelle spends one night with her! The restaurant owners and Clara decide to pool their skills and that’s when author Hinske takes readers on a beautiful journey of hurting people who are strangers learning to trust each other inexplicably and in doing so, discovering they love each other like FAMILY! During the darkest times of their lives, they are brought together by sharing the magic and love of baking.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author and Casa del Northern Publishing. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
Paws and Pastries by Barbara Hinske is the first book in the Paws and Pastries series. Clara Conway has had it with her cheating husband! After discovering he never ended his affair, she packs up her belongings and starts driving. She doesn’t need him and the heartache. Her plan is to find a new city that is large enough to support a patisserie she has dreamed of opening. Her plan is derailed when she has car trouble in the small town of Pinewood. While the town is charming with friendly and welcoming residents, she feels the town's too small for her dream. As another delay keeps her in town, she grows fonder and fonder of her new friends and the town. Will she recognize that her fate can survive in the small town? Will she realize that fate has placed her where she needs to be? Paws and Pastries is a sweet, heartwarming story of second chances. I easily fell in love with Clara and the residents of Pinewood. Paws and Pastries is a flowing story that pulls the reader in from the opening line. I could have easily read it in one day if I had the time. It is the type of story that just draws you in. I love Clara’s strength to declare “I’m done and walk away. I loved that her journey was fueled by the “he-done-me wrong songs that played on the radio. I loved how the residents welcomed Clara with open arms. I look forward to the rest of the series as book 2, Sweets and Treats was released this year. I can’t wait to read more of Clara’s adventures and misadventures as she still must deal with her devious soon-to-be ex-husband. What tricks will he pull? I highly recommend Paws and Pastries.
Paws and Pastries is available in paperback and eBook
At this time of darkness and windy cold, our hearts gravitate to the colorful, cheerful cover of this novel. The journey of Clara Conway driving through freezing rain and skeletal trees reflects our winter angst, but the warmth of her mother’s love and legacy maintain Clara’s (and our) momentum. The author captures the character with well-turned phrases: “The raw emotion of the he-done-me-wrong songs and the resilience of those focused on fresh starts acted as a balm to her tattered soul.
I love a novel with strong side characters, and early chapters introduce us to the owners of Andy’s Automotive and the restaurant with “Breakfast Happily Served All Day—It’s the Most Important Meal of the Day. By the end of chapter 3, we’ve met an intriguing attorney with “rugged not-quite-handsome features who’s also a talented organist, and Clara comes on board as a cook while waiting for car repair during the holidays.
As a veterinarian who writes medical thrillers and romantic suspense about animals, I was eager for the pet element, which appears through an animal shelter. I won’t give away the ending, but the tension from Clara’s abandonment by her husband is resolved with a satisfying HEA—happily ever after—conclusion.
The characters are all good guys with the exception of one who has not played much part in the series yet. In fact, the good guys are so good that it would not take much to imagine them all sprouting wings. No shades of gray in this story. No complex characters either. The story goes predictably along lines to make everything fall into place. Everything is just a bit too perfect for my tastes. It reminds me of a generic made for tv family movie. I assume readers are craving everything just so, and that is what is found here. Of course, it does not finish, but instead ends with a cliffhanger so readers hurry up to purchase the next book in the series. I wanted to give it two and a half stars but was generous with three as there is no way to give half stars in reviews here. No challenges in reading the simple script nor any surprises in the storyline just an everything is perfect kind of story. Just envision rainbows, a smiling sun and fluffy clouds.
I have loved every book I have previously read by this author. I’ve added this one to that list. The story line is great. Hopefully you’ve never had to deal with a marriage like Clara did. Would you be as strong as she is? The best thing that could have happened to her was her car to breaking down and leading her to Pinewood. God does have a way of making things happen at the right time. What a blessing that she could help Josef and Maisie out like she did. Or is it a case of who helped who? I loved that Josef was so caring to stray animals. I hope that this is the start of a series because I would love to hang out with Clara, Kurt, Noelle and the rest of the good Pinewood folks again soon.
What a fun read! Paws and Pastries introduces Clara Conway. Her mother has just died and her husband, Travis has been having an affair with Melanie the dental hygienist! Clara decides to leave her husband and pack all of her belongings into her car and drive west. Car trouble forces her to stop in the small town of Pinewood. Then circumstances make it difficult for her to leave right away. I liked all of the characters in this book. The book has a great flow to it and it was easy to imagine all that was happening. I liked that the book took place at the end of November through Christmas. It was nice that the author included the beginning of the second book at the end. It'll be interesting to see how Clara does in her new life!
What an enjoyable and uplifting book, even if it started out with a broken marriage. Clara did a brave action in packing up her life, setting out on the highway to a new life. A red warning light in her car gets her off the highway to the nearest town, Pinewood.
Barbara Hinske then gave us some incredible characters from Andy the garage mechanic, Josef and Maisie the diner owners and a lawyer named Kurt Holbrook. Clara goes on to have many memorable times in the diner, the church choir and not getting a stray dog to the no-kill shelter.
This is the first book I have read of Barbara Hinske. Going on to read the rest of this series, then on to the Rosemont books. Really impressed with this book. Recommended just to read all the things baked and iced.
I like the author's Guiding Emily series, so I thought I'd give this one a shot. It's cozy, but it's neither a cozy mystery or a cozy romance and not much happens. More of a slice-of-life of a woman leaving her cheating husband, having her car break down in a small town full of good-hearted people, and spending Thanksgiving helping a local couple run their diner and feed the town for Thanksgiving. Lots of pastries, but the paws didn't show up until the end of the book. There's a hint there could be a romance in future books, but she's still trying to get disentangled from her ex who is putting up roadblocks in the divorce.
Clara needs a change in her life. Leaving her cheating husband, she searches for meaning and a new career.
Pinewood is a wonderful town full of very special people. Clara accidentally ends up needing emergency car repairs. She ends up meeting some friendly loving people and it changes her life.
Of course, no Barbara Hinske book would be complete without dogs in it. Read the book to discover how Noelle, a stray, completes the first chapter of Clara's new life.
This was a nice story about Clara, who finally has enough of her cheating husband and decides to leave him without any warning! She gets stranded when her car breaks down and ends up working in a diner while waiting for her car to get fixed. Nice small town with caring characters that help Clara out and get really attached to her. A light hearted quick read.
4.5/5 Super cute novella covering the time leading up to Thanksgiving thru Christmas. Newly-single Clara has a dream of opening a bakery of her own, but her dreams are delayed when she is stuck in Pinewood while her car is being repaired. Only about 150 pages, very Hallmark-y. I loved all of the baking in the story and I adore the little stray dog that finds Clara. I’m definitely reading the rest of this series because this one made me smile. This was delightful!
I loved so much about this book. Claire couldn’t have landed in a better place. The diner and bakery items had my mouth drooling. The characters are all wonderful and the dogs in the authors books are always a hit. I highly recommend grabbing your favorite beverage and maybe a pastry and finding the warmth and comfort of this enchanting book.
Barbara Hinske has another sweet hit with this holiday story. Clara discovers her husband is still cheating when she returns early from her mother’s funeral. She packs up and leaves everything, but car trouble lands her in Pinewood where she finds more than she expected. This is a quick read and a feel-good story so desperately welcome in 2020.
This standalone is a heartwarming story of recovery from betrayal, heartbreak, and the death of a spouse. This book shares the journey of a group of small town people who believe in watching over their families, friends and new friends. Healing begins by helping others and allowing them to help you. This was a refreshing change and a charming story
Cute Story. Clara finds her husband has been cheating on her when she gets home after Being with her mother through her passing. Clara gathers all the things she wants and leaves him her car breaks down in a cute little town. I like the cute story and that everything works out for her and there’s even a dog!
What a wonderful read. I truly enjoyed the story line and the characters believable. The details of the story were believable and I wished to live in that little town with friendly people giving to others who needed help. This is a first for me reading a book by Barbara Hinske and I look forward to reading more of her stories in the future.
Great news book. I love that the book is filled with love, hope, friendship, and kindness. Clara is running away from a cheating husband, little does she know she’s running toward a beautiful new life.
I loved it! I really couldn't put it down. Clara is a brave newly single woman and a very likeable character. Pinewood is a lovely, friendly, accepting town. I'm so hoping to see more Clara and Luke stories in the future.
This cover is so cute for the book and perfect for the story. I read this book while I was waiting for an appointment and I just love the way Barbara writes. Her stories are just so good and had me smiling at the end. Barbara hit this one over the fence and into a Christmas tree!
