Jack Ludefance #3

Appellate Judge

Rate this book
From the swamps of the Florida panhandle, once again emerges private investigator Jack Ludefance, in a murder/mystery/thriller novel by award winning author Behcet Kaya, titled “Appellate Judge. A key element in this case, in which readers are orbited into with a very subtle path of reasoning, revolves around a violin. Not just any ordinary violin, but a Stradivarius, worth many millions of dollars. What’s more, it seems this particular Strad, which was gifted to the judge years back by a Swiss aristocrat, was actually at one time owned by the most famous violin virtuoso who ever lived, Niccolò Paganini; adding even more to its value. The uncovering of details about this violin makes for a very sophisticated history into the world of classical instruments.

Behcet Kaya is the author of eight novels. His first literary fiction novel, Voice of Conscience, follows, to some extent, his own life experiences. His second novel, Murder on the Naval Base is a fast-paced who-done-it, his recently published third novel, Road to Siran, Erin’s Story is the eagerly awaited sequel to Voice of Conscience and the fourth Treacherous Estate is a crime thriller and the fifth Body in the Woods, Appellant Judge. Murder in Buckhead, Uncanny Alliance. The next novel titled "Deception" coming in 2024

Born in northeastern Turkey, Behcet grew up in a very small village with long held traditions. His rebellious nature emerged at an early age and by time he was ten, he had read, in secret, all the Turkish translated stories of Mike Hammer. In addition, he read several of Dale Carnage’s works, and all of Yashar Kemal’s novels. His world burst out beyond that of his small village and he yearned for a more western way of life.

Defying his father, Behcet left home at fourteen and travelled first to Istanbul and then on to London. His obsession was to complete his high school education and then a college degree in engineering. He supported himself by working full-time and earning scholarships from Inner London Education Authority. His creative side began emerging when his drama and literature teacher cast him in a play in which his performance awed the audience. His insatiable appetite for literature widened to include the classics of Dickens, D.H. Laurence, and the Russian masters.

While at Hatfield Polytechnic, Behcet made his first visit to the US as an exchange student with the British Universities North American Club. He made the move to the US in 1976 and became a US citizen in 1985. While living in Atlanta, Georgia he followed his creative yearnings and attended the Alliance Theatre School and studied at the SAG Conservatory of Georgia, which earned him his Screen Actors Guild card. In 1994, Kaya and his wife moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his studies at the Roby Theatre Company and the Shakespeare, A Noise Within, Theatre Workshop.

In the soon to be released movie, “Being American starring Lorenzo Lamas, Behcet plays the part of a Turkish Defense Minister.

Along with acting, writing became a natural outlet. In addition to his three novels, Voice of Conscience, Murder on the Naval Base, and Road to Siran, Erin’s Story, Treacherous Estate, Body in the Woods, appellate Judge and Murder in Buckhead will be published in 2022. Behcet has published numerous short stories and is currently working on his fourth novel, Body in the Woods.
Behcet Kaya received a BA degree in Political Science from California state university channel Island, 2017

Appellate Judge: A Jack Ludefance Novel
By: Behcet Kaya
Publication Date: November 2020

Crime thriller readers and fans alike, rejoice, the scar-faced Floridian, Private Investigator Jack Ludefance, has returned for the third time in the new novel by author Behcet Kaya, Appellate Judge.

Fresh from a much-needed cruise vacation through the Panama Canal with his sister Margeaux, and his late father’s companion, Deloris, PI Ludefance finds himself agreeing to investigate another case. This time he’s being hired by a distraught woman, Cindy Hastings, who is the devoted daughter of the deceased, highly respected, Judge Russell Hastings of the Florida First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee. Unfortunately, it’s been a year since his presumed murder, and the police have hit a wall; all initial suspects have been cleared, and there are no new leads.

Judge Hastings was discovered in his judge’s chambers when he failed to return to the courtroom, after a break during an appeal trial where a big pharmaceutical company was found guilty in a wrongful death lawsuit. After reviewing the records from the murder scene, PI Ludefance begins his own extremely meticulous research by reinterviewing suspects (much to their dismay) beginning with the judge’s immediate family, as he attempts to piece together what happened prior to the man’s death. He hopes to narrow down who remains the most likely to have committed the murder. Throughout his exhaustive investigations, Jack uncovers bits of new evidence, and fingers start pointing in a few directions, one of which is the sexually insatiable widow, Kelly, and even possibly one of her many lovers. But PI Ludefance doesn’t let any stone go unturned, and he’s quickly pulled into two other equally plausible directions. One of which is a possible revenge plot spurred on by the recent pharmaceutical company conviction, while the other motive for murder revolves around Judge Hastings hobby and weekly pastime, playing violin in a quartet at a local lounge.

So between a grieving family riddled with their own abundant personal issues, pushing and pulling Jack in a myriad of directions, and the possibility that the victim had enemies outside of his family who also could have had motivation to murder, PI Ludefance has his work cut out for him. But will he be able to use his expert investigative skills to delve in deeper than the police could (often going far beyond what the justice system would allow them to), and ultimately extract the critically missing information, and uncover who appellate judge Russell Hastings murderer was, or will he get too tangled in the current situations to pull himself out?

Author Behcet Kaya has once again presented readers with an emotionally intense crime thriller. Appellate Judge has classic mystery twists and turns that will keep readers engaged and guessing, but perhaps not as shocking and unbelievable as the previous Jack Ludefance novel. However, this shouldn’t dissuade anyone from either continuing to read this third novel in the Jack Ludefance series, or from picking this particular book up for the first time and reading it. This is because the author presents an excellent standalone thriller mystery with well thought-out characters, and a story that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end. The author also treats his veteran readers to more character development with Jack Ludefance that greatly enhances the overall storyline. This reader particularly enjoys the fact that over the course of the series it is revealed that Jack is a down-to-earth kind of guy who isn't too cool or pretentious of a private investigator (unlike some PIs who prefer to zip around places in their red Ferrari) to shop at a Walmart for clothes, and stay at a budget Best Western Hotel.

Quill says: Get ready for another engaging crime thriller in the Jack Ludefance series by author Behcet Kaya. Appellate Judge is one crime thriller you don't want to miss.

Appellate Judge by Behcet Kaya is the third Jack Ludefance novel, and this private investigator gets better with each book. Jack is taking a break from his cases and goes on a cruise with his sister, Margeaux, and their late father's companion, Deloris. In the middle of his vacation, he gets a call that his next challenging case is waiting for him when he is back in the states. A year has passed since the Honorable Judge Russell Hasting died. His daughter is not convinced it was a heart attack, especially since there were marks clearly across his neck. Can Jack work his magic again to find the clue that will give him a break?

Behcet Kaya is an amazing author that continues to build off his intriguing character, PI Jack Ludefance. Appellate Judge keeps the readers hanging on to every work as the story unfolds into another suspenseful thriller. I love how the author keeps his novels fast, fierce, and full of action without extra filler. I am looking forward to the next novel in this series and the new turn in his life.

‘There I no greater disaster than greed Lao-tzu

California author Behçet Kaya is also known by his stage name as an actor Ben Kaya (`Fast Food', `The Practice', `Being American' on film and numerous roles on the legitimate stages such as The Noise Within among others). Whether it is the fallout of thinking though a storyline or actually taking on the role of a fictional character, the result in the case of Behçet Kaya heightens the verismo as is evident in his short stories and his novels VOICE OF CONSCIENCE, MURDER ON THE NAVAL BASE, ROAD TO SIRAN: ERIN'S STORY, TREACHEROUS ESTATE, BODY IN THE WOODS, and now APPELLATE JUDGE. True, his background of having been born and raised in a small village in Turkey, secretly consuming the exemplary works of the Turkish writer of Kurdish origin Yaşar Kemal, his subsequent rebellious flight to Istanbul and London, compelled and succeeding to earn a degree in engineering, his successful introduction to the stage while attending the inner London Education Authority and his subsequent move to the United States where he gained citizenship and worked successfully to achieve his Screen Actors Guild card after studies in Georgia, and then moving to Los Angeles to embrace both his acting ambitions and writing skills - all of this is the progress of a man committed to his art - and it shows.

Having experienced the pleasure of reading five of Behçet’s six novels, it is comfortable to share that his gifts multiply with each book. He casually opens this episode as follows “The Honorable Judge Russell Hastings courtroom was located on the third floor of the Florida First District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee, Florida. He was part of a panel of three judges including Judge Paul Mattingly and Judge Andrew Runner…In his late fifties, the judge had graying hair and a significant potbelly. With his Irish ancestry and love of good whiskey his face had taken on the familiar red splotches. An intruder enters and the plot thickens. ‘The intruder, still holding the judge’s neck in a vice grip, was astonished when the judge’s body went limp, and fell to the floor. Less than five minutes had elapsed. Judge Hastings lifeless body lay on the thick carpet and the intruder had vanished into thin air. Kaya’s keen sense of pacing opens this fine tale, when a year later the plot springs open ‘Set in the swamps of the Florida panhandle, PI Jack Ludefance steps in to investigate both a murder and a violin theft not just any ordinary violin, but a Stradivarius, worth many millions of dollars. What’s more, it seems this particular Strad, which was gifted to the judge years back by a Swiss aristocrat, was actually at one time owned by the most famous violin virtuoso who ever lived, Niccolò Paganini, enhancing its value.

Behçet Kaya's style of writing captures the essence of ‘mysteries, giving the reader a sense of place and tenor like few other writers are capable of achieving. He is obviously one of our more important writers of the times and his niche in literature is secure. Highly recommended on every level.

This is the third novel I have had the pleasure of reading from author Bechet Kaya, and I have to say that each one has gotten better than the last. This author is definitely one to look out for in my mind, and I shall be looking forward to reading all of his books as time goes on. Without giving anything away this is a very engaging murder mystery novel, private investigator Jack Ludefance investigates the murder of a judge as the police seem unable to solve the crime, the judge’s daughter hires Jack to do what the police seem unable to, but as the PI delves deeper and deeper into the case he comes across many possible suspects and hits many many road blocks along the way. A very well-written story with impeccably well thought out characters. Its fast-paced but easy to follow at the same time. A thoroughly enjoyable read for me and I highly recommend.

Appellate Judge: A Jack Ludefance Novel (Jack Ludefance PI Series) by Behcet Kaya

I received a copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the second book I have read written by Behcet Kaya which follows Body In The Woods A Jack Ludefance Novel but can also be read as a standalone.
It begins with the mysterious and shocking death/murder of Judge Russell Hastings in his chambers at the rear of the courtroom. On learning that the case is about to be closed as a cold case , one of his daughters, Cindy Hastings, hires Jack Ludefance to do what he does best, solve crime.

Once again the author shows what a strong, male protagonist he has created in Jack Ludefance. He is an outstanding character possessing extraordinary skills of deduction and an impressive understanding of human psychology. He uncovers truths, rights wrong doings, brings people to justice, all the while making a positive difference in the world.

Reading this crime story enourages our thirst for justice, bringing out our primal need to feel secure in the fundamental notions of right and wrong. The book begins with a crime, builds with the investigation and pays off with the identification of the perpetrators. It is resolved with the perpetrator being brought to justice with a nailbiting climax.

This isn’t my first Kaya book, and there isn’t a whole lot I can say about the author and style I haven’t said before. I can say that I’m always excited to read the Ludefance series, written by a talented writer (among other things).

This story follows the mystery of Judge Hastings murder. Jack Ludefance sets off to solve this, along with the theft of a particular item worth millions. What makes this story unique in the series is that the Judge’s murder isn’t the catalyst. It’s not even fresh (the police have been investigating it for months). It is the Judge’s daughter who wants justice who really kicks the story off. This book really focuses on the investigation and mystery of the death, and Ludefance has to really dig into his intuition and wit to keep both himself safe and progression to the very end. I really like what was done here, and how well it tied in with the Ludefance series but stood out as a different plot style than the other books. I look forward to diving into more of Kaya’s work in the future!

The story begins with the suspicious and untimely death of a Judge, however a year later the police have no leads and decide to close the case, but one of the victims daughters hires a private investigator named Jack Ludafence in the hopes of finding the truth and the killer!

The Appellate Judge is part 3 of the Jack Ludafence PI series and i have now had the satisfaction of reading all three of them. I really do like this author, he has a way of making me feel as though I’m in a movie scene whilst reading. The character development in Kaya’s novels is as always very intriguing and plausible, unlike many crime thrillers these days. Each book brings a little more of Jacks character to life and you can’t help but like him. This is an intense crime thriller with plenty of intrigue and action. Perhaps not my favourite of his books, but that’s just because he continuously sets such a high standard. Appellate Judge is one that I definitely recommend.

Another awesome read by bay set Kya

A judge is killed or was he, the official that certificate says heart attack, but his daughter isn’t buying it. Jack tries to relax on a vacation with a sister and also his debts companion who is like a family member. Just like all of Jack’s life though it’s interrupted and he must return to help solve the case. Although this is just a brief summary just know if it’s a bay set Kya Book there is much more to it. I love his books and find them to be action packed an interesting he is quickly becoming one of my go to authors for entertainment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves intelligent riding and I guess who that’s not easy to guess.

This was my first experience with PI Jack Ludefance. I have to say it was an interesting introduction. A dead judge, a prestigious violin, and enough suspense and action to keep you turning pages. When the police hit a wall after a year investigating the judge’s death, Ludefance steps in after being contacted by the judge’s daughter. The timing of his death was suspicious itself - in the middle of an appeal trial for big pharma (not to mention the marks on his neck). The trail might be colder than he’d like but Ludefance’s determination is admirable. A thrilling mystery that many will enjoy.

Pacific Book Review
From the swamps of the Florida panhandle, once again emerges private investigator Jack Ludefance, in a murder/mystery/thriller novel by award winning author Behcet Kaya, titled Appellate Judge.
The story begins while Jack, his sister and a family friend, are on a luxury cruise ship traversing the Panama Canal, when Jack receives a phone call requesting he take on a case in Tallahassee, Florida of an unsolved murder of an appellate judge which happened almost a year ago. It seems the police have no more leads, having cleared all of the usual suspects, resulting in the case becoming a cold-case file. The daughter
of the judge is determined to find her father’s killer, and bring him or her to justice; it seems as if the local police are simply out of leads to solve this case. Jack agrees to take on the case, at his own schedule, his own speed, and on his own terms typical for this PI character. As the author skillfully brings the reading audience into Jack’s mindset and reasoning, revealing his investigative logic, correlation of facts and evidence, and projections of theories to solve the case, readers find themselves in a very special literary space that is within Jack’s mind. The seamless blending of narration and dialogue, coupled with descriptions from the point of view of Jack’s awareness, are truly written in a magnificent style and worthy of mention.
I found this plot element to be extraordinary, original, extremely creative and very educational.
With suspense, action, seduction and attitude, worthy of the Jack Ludefance series, Appellate Judge ranks high in the best-of-class within this genre. It stands on its own for readers just entering the series, albeit those who have read his two prior novels, Treacherous Estate and Body in the Woods would appreciate the continued character development and maturity Kaya brings to his latest in the series. The Appellate Judge is not one to miss!

Behcet Kaya had done, yet again, another fantastic job. His books are fantastic and I very much enjoy them. This book in particular had a great flow and the twists left me shocked. So much seemed to happen in this one. I was glad we got to see some old previous characters from the other books as well! Since the book is about one case, I do believe it could be read as a standalone, but a person would miss out on a few previous references. Behcet Kaya's books are a must-read.
I do wonder what he has in store for us next and I am very much looking forward to it.

Another captivating read by Behcet Kaya. Much like in the last book following Jack Ludefance that I read, Kaya does an exemplary job of capturing place, mood, and suspense. Private investigator Jack Ludefance finds himself investigating a murder revolving around a rare violin. The musical history element of this story was really fascinating to me. I enjoyed all the little details that were added to the story. The twists and turns along the way were also clever and kept me engaged. Jack is an intriguing and well-developed character. The chapters are the book are short and snappy with action and witty dialogue keeping you on your toes. If you are into murder mystery stories, I would recommend this one!

The Appellate Judge: A Jack Ludefance Novel was the first Ludefance novel I read and I loved it. The novel wastes no time getting into the action with the murder of Judge Hastings. Fast forward a year later, the case is still not solved. Jack Ludefance, a private investigator is in between cases and enjoying his time on a cruise with his sister when he receives a call. The call is about the Judge Hastings case and he is wanted to help solve it. Ludefance accepts the job and once he’s back from his cruise he wastes no time getting to work. He starts interviewing family members, friends and more and receives a lot of push back. But he is determined to persevere and find clues as to what happened to Judge Hastings. It’s a fast paced novel that’s hard to put down and it keeps you guessing who was involved in the murder. I will definitely be reading the other Jack Ludefance novels!

PI Jack Ludefance steps into action when the police draw a blank after almost a year of investigating the murder of a judge. The judge’s daughter contacts Jack Ludefance to get to the bottom of this murder mystery. Will he succeed?

If you enjoy a good private investigator novel then I think this one is a must. There are so many clever twists and turns along the way I couldn’t wait to get to the end to find out how everything would play out.

Author Bechet Kaya is an accomplished and skilled writer with a talent for placing the reader inside the story along with the characters. There is a sense of realism, jeopardy and excitement that enhances the overall pleasure of reading his books. I’ve read a number of them now and eagerly await each new release, and I think Appellate Judge may be my favourite one yet.

Ever heard the saying "music soothes the savage beast"? Well, in Behcet Kaya's "Appellate Judge," a Stradivarius violin does anything but soothe it ignites a chilling tale of murder, mystery, and high-stakes legal drama. Kaya, author of the Jack Ludefance PI series, returns with a compelling thriller that weaves together the worlds of classical music, law, and the dark underbelly of human nature.

"Appellate Judge" plunges us into the investigation of a murder linked to a priceless Stradivarius violin, once owned by the legendary Paganini. Private investigator Jack Ludefance finds himself navigating a complex web of deceit, where the pursuit of justice clashes with hidden agendas and long-buried secrets. The violin itself becomes a character, its history and value adding layers of intrigue to the already suspenseful plot. Kaya skillfully blends the intricacies of the legal system with the allure of the classical music world, creating a unique backdrop for this gripping thriller.

Kaya's writing style is sharp and engaging. He has a knack for creating vivid imagery and crafting dialogue that crackles with authenticity. The narrative voice is confident and assured, pulling the reader along at a brisk pace. The descriptions, particularly those related to the violin and its history, are richly detailed and add a touch of sophistication to the thriller genre.

Jack Ludefance is a compelling protagonist. He's not your typical hard-boiled detective; he's intelligent, determined, and possesses a strong moral compass. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, each with their own secrets and motivations. The exploration of themes like justice, revenge, and the corrupting influence of wealth adds depth to the narrative.

The plot is expertly crafted, with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. The pacing is perfect, balancing moments of intense action with quieter, more reflective scenes. The structure of the story is well-organized, allowing the reader to follow the complex investigation without feeling overwhelmed.

"Appellate Judge" delves into the themes of justice and morality, exploring the gray areas that often exist within the legal system. The story also touches on the power of obsession and the lengths people will go to for wealth and recognition. These themes resonate with real-world issues, adding a layer of social commentary to the thriller narrative.

This book had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The suspense was palpable, and I found myself emotionally invested in Jack's quest for the truth. The moments of revelation, particularly those related to the violin's history and the motives behind the murder, were truly shocking.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its intricate plot. Kaya masterfully weaves together the various threads of the story, creating a narrative that is both complex and satisfying. The character development is another highlight. Jack Ludefance is a character I won't soon forget.

While the book is strong overall, there were moments when I felt the pacing could have been slightly slower, allowing for more in-depth exploration of certain characters and relationships. However, this is a minor critique in the context of the overall compelling narrative.

Personally, I loved the way Kaya incorporated the history of the Stradivarius violin into the story. As someone with an appreciation for music history, I found this element particularly fascinating. It added a layer of depth and intrigue that elevated the story beyond a typical thriller.

"Appellate Judge" is a must-read for fans of legal thrillers and anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Kaya has crafted a compelling and suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very last page. I give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars and eagerly await Kaya's next installment in the Jack Ludefance series.

Great detective story. Interesting characters and lots of hunting up clues and following the twisted turns and leads as they come up.
Jack Ludefance is the Private investigator who is hired to look into the death of an appellate judge in Tallahassee, Florida.
He is respected as fair and honest. But he died in his chambers just before hearing a case.
The police thought it could have been related to some case he was involved in.
Turns out that the judge owned a very expensive violin, which changes the direction of the investigation.
Interesting characters without the usual cliches about Private detectives.
If you enjoy unraveling the story and getting to the bottom of a mystery piece by piece you would likely enjoy this one. Will be looking forward to the next book by this author.

Behcet Kaya’s Appellate Judge is more than just a murder mystery, it’s a masterfully composed symphony of suspense and intrigue. The case of the Stradivarius violin murder is as elegant as it is chilling, with each clue unraveling a hidden layer of deceit.

The stakes are high, and every chapter tightens the tension, leaving no room for predictability.

For fans of mysteries that blend sophistication and danger, this novel strikes all the right chords. A truly unforgettable read.
