Hades #4

Timber

Rate this book
Betrayed.

My best friend, my right hand, the man I trusted above all others. Zayden de Rosa declared his love for me and pursued me until he shattered the walls between us. Then the man who loved me proved to be a traitor. I never saw that coming.

Abandoned.

My fierce lover, he died to protect me. Let me kill him and erase him so he could move in the shadows. He’s out there alone and he has no idea what’s happened. All he’ll know is that I’m not where I’m supposed to be. Something that might cost him his life for real. I have to trust him to survive on his own. He never saw that coming.

Framed.

My lighthouse. My lover. My Lucas. I love him so damn much and while I might be guilty of some crimes, the worst seems to be hurting him. The majority of what they arrested me for was a damn lie, but not that one. Hopefully the light he promised me will sustain through this time. We never saw that coming.

Enraged.

My ex is at the heart of this all. One assault after another. He didn’t break me before and he won’t break me now.

I’m Hades.

He’ll never see me coming.

Timber is book FOUR of FOUR in the Hades series. This book contains scenes and content that may become triggering for some people and it is advised to proceed with caution. If you've got this far in the series, you're already well acquainted with the nature of the Hades plotline and can make your own educated guesses.

What an amazing end to such an amazing series!!! Ugh, Hades and her boys will live on in my heart forever just like the Madison Kat series. 🥺

Right from the very beginning, we were thrown into the deep end of the plot. The one thing that Tate James does right is make a very intense cliffhanger and then fix everything within the first two chapters. I also really respect the care that Tate James put into Hades' trauma, but it was very. VERY. Intense. There was little to no warning going into it and I thought that was a bit careless for how severe these scenes were. I was taken aback and it was really tough to get through.

That being said, I think the rest of the book was great! The spicy scenes were amazing (I expected nothing less it's Tate James) and my love grew for the dynamic team. This book is so character driven; sometimes I'd wish it was more plot-based, but it is what it is. I liked how the revenge scenes played out against her ex, however I thought the actual ending was soooo anticlimactic. I was so disappointed truly. We have all this build up and you think it's going to be so good....then nothing happens. IT SUCKED SO BAD! 😭

Overall, I can't recommend this series, or just Tate James's books in general. It's always a good time and there plenty of sex to go around (literally). 🙂‍↔ On a serious note, this series was such a good time and I'm so glad I got to read about these characters. ❤️

To say I am sad to finish this series is the biggest understatement of the year 😭😭

WHAT A FINALE! Timber digs deep....and then it digs deeper. Inarguably Tate James most emotionally complex, evocative, and heart-wrenching story to date, this is truly an author elevating her craft. All centered around one of the most captivating and ground breaking heroines I’ve ever read. EVER. Hade is truly a revelation- and reading this story from her eyes has been nothing short of transformative. The character journey she takes in this finale is pure brilliance, a story told with the bold and gusty finesse of a truly innovative, creative mastermind.

The narrative, though expansive, is tightly woven and completely engrossing- heartbreaking yet satisfying. I have NEVER felt a Tate James story as deeply as this one, and I’ve never cried such a wide gamut of tears- joy, hate, fear, heartbreak, healing, wholeness. And that is because of these characters- this harem. And the magic of Hades. Every single one of them is perfectly crafted and perfectly fused. Each evolves into the fullest version of themselves, but even more so, into the perfect foil to Hades herself, and to her own journey. As I’ve mentioned before, there is no harem like this one. The power, the architecture, the way the arcs intersect, the parallel journey of romance and friendship- it’s a unique and innovative construct intellectually, but EMOTIONALLY and psychologically it is truly literary art. Hades, Grumpdrop, Zeddy Bear, and GC are magical enough on their own, but together this is relational poetry. A romance so special, so powerful, pure and indomitable- a dynamic that shines all the brighter amidst all of the gritty trauma and violence that chaotically orbits these dynamic characters. But despite Hades starting as a character so abjectly against it for so long, love truly reigns supreme in Timber. It’s a finale full of pain, loss, heartbreak, and destruction, but also hope and healing. Amidst the flames a phoenix will rise, a love and connection that will NEVER fall. Brava, Tate. Brava.

I’ve thought this throughout the entire series, I liked the Madison Kate books better.

There was just something about those books that spoke more to me than this series.
However, I greatly appreciate the journey Hades went through. Especially in this last book.

There was just so. much. freaking. sex.
In the last book, James made a comment that there was a reason for that. But this one was just as bad.
Not in the beginning, sure. But she definitely makes up for it later.

They’re well written scenes, don’t get me wrong but it’s a little much.
Sometimes I ask ‘where the heck is the plot?
The repeated phrases didn’t help.

Thinking about the Chase plot, I bet she wrote that conversation between Hades and Hannah because she knew that’s exactly what fans would think about the way that ended.
I had to agree with Hannah at that point but looking back on it, I realised that it does feel like a satisfying conclusion.
Hayden got her justice and revenge.

I had hoped Seph would become a more likable character and she actually does!
I like that both she and Hades were able to heal from the past and move on to their better futures.

I think the reason why I liked this less was because the relationship between Hades and her guys felt like it was mostly just physical. The genuine conversation’s were few and far between.
Plus, everything moved so quickly that before I knew it, they were one big working relationship!

Overall, I really liked how we saw Hades past trauma affect her present actions and relationships. Then her journey of healing. Which looks vastly different to other people’s journeys.
I do wish we learned more about Hades men.

This would’ve been 4.5 stars if not for some issues with the audio.

Kicking ass and taking names!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 🤐🤫🫣😍🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Hayden Darling Timber (a.k.a. Hades, a.k.a. Daria Wolfe, a.k.a. Dare) - she has been fighting against an old foe who keeps sabotaging her businesses and the people closest to her. The end of the last book had some big reveals that seemed way to implausible to even happen in a work of fiction. But hey, it did complicate things for Hades, so why not?

The Heroes: Lucas (a.k.a. Gumdrop), Cass (a.k.a. Grumpy Cat), Zed (a.k.a. Zeddy Bear) - Lucas is a genuinely nice guy and working toward getting certified as an EMT to help out more. Cass is a former gang leader that was dead and needs to be resurrected. Zed is Hades right hand man who betrayed her in the worst possible way.

The Story: Everything is falling apart from the events at the end of the last book. It is unknown how Hayden will come back from it and be cleared of all the allegations against her. Her nemesis always seems to come out on top and now it seems he may have won. Dare wasn’t the only one that was betrayed, Zed was betrayed as well.

What I liked about this book is that Hades and her men finally started to make plans and play offense with the man that is out to get her. They ultimately began to make some moves against him and get some wins under their belts. I have been waiting for this and even mentioned in my review of the last book that I wanted them to start scheming instead of just reacting to everything their nemesis had done.

This series was told in Hades point of view via duet narration, and narrated by Noelle Bridges and Lucas Webley. Noelle has the perfect voice for Hades and though I don’t like Hayden’s personality all the time, Noelle does a fantastic job at portraying her in all her fierce glory. Lucas Webley also does a terrific job, he has a deep sexy voice for Zed, and rough growly voice for Cass and a sincere guileless voice for Lucas.

I do love the duet narration, but I also wish that the book and series was told in multiple points of view so I could get more of a feel for what the guys were thinking at any given time. Though we know they love Hades, I still like getting the male point of view in a romance novel.

I was afraid that the part where they finally defeat their enemy would be anticlimactic and I found that I really liked the way it all worked out. The only thing I can say I sort of disliked was the amount of intimate scenes. It seemed like nearly every other scene was a sex scene and I just really wanted to find out what happened. I think the book could have definitely been shortened a bit by taking out about half of those scenes.

I sobbed for a good amount of time over the beginning of this book. What sucks to me is, Hades never properly deals with what happens to her doesn’t communicate with the guys about it and everything that happened with Chase and Zed (separately) are just kind of swept under the rug.

Again, the resolution to the cliffhanger and the impact to the relationship was cleared very quickly.

A lot of the middle of this book felt boring to me. I’m someone who loves steaminess in books but the sex scenes started to feel so frequent and similar it became gratuitous and I was really just skimming them. (There’s only so many times I can read about a “hard c*ck being shoved into her “aching c*nt.)

Lastly, the “big ending” was incredibly unsatisfying to me. Part of what made Madison Kate’s series so addicting was they had so many false leads and the true stalker and mysteries weren’t unraveled until the end of the last book. In the Hades series, we knew who the villain was the whole time. He had plenty of time on page. And for some reason, they just kept not killing him.

And then at the end we find out it’s because

TW heroine has been raped in the past, heroine is raped on page, PTSD, heroine is drugged, sex trafficking victims, on page violence, torture, murder

Why are Tate James books so freaking addicting.

This was an intense series and I'm sad it's over. I had a wild time with Hades, Zed, Lucas, and Cass. There was nonstop action, suspense, and steam throughout the entire series. This final book is LONG and even though I did enjoy it, for me it's the weakest book in the series. The conclusion with Chase was a little unsatisfying, especially since most of the lead-up to his ending happened off-page. I was still happy Hades got her revenge, but I wanted to at least be able to see what was done.

The bond between our 3 guys is SO wonderful. I love them all but Lucas is probably my favorite. He's a total sweetheart.

I know we're getting the Guild next, but I totally wouldn't mind a series for Seph!! (And Rex's boys??)

Allll the triggers for this one: rape, physical/psychological/sexual/forced drug abuse, torture, mutilation. Things get DARK in this finale.

I went into this series with such high expectations, and it just wasn’t it for me. This book is rather long, but that’s because every chapter had to have at least one smutty scene - now, I happen to love spice and smut, especially from Tate James - but it became repetitive. I found myself skimming those parts towards the end just to see the story finally resolve itself.

There were some tense moments, and I especially enjoyed how Hades often referred to Archer and his boys as idiots, although the constant MK mentions felt tedious at times. At the start of the series, I didn’t know how to feel about Lucas being so young, but he became my favourite and felt refreshing in the story.

I think the main thing that left me cold on this series is that so much of the outcome is only alluded to - as a reader, I wanted more details of how Hades took down Chase. Less of this “a magician never reveals her tricks nonsense. This series also did that thing where every book finished on a major cliffhanger that got resolved quickly in the first few chapters of the following book.

Also, was it just me or did Hades rant to Hannah towards the end (chap 63) about her “anticlimactic comment feel very pointed ?? Hmmm. I hear you, Tate James.

Cass is absent for significant portions of this book and the previous one, and I’m not sure I understand why? He was doing something but what exactly? It feels like in a TV show where they can’t afford the actor anymore so they just send them away to live on a farm with a distant relative.

Now, story aside, here are my real issues with this book:

The way Hades went from reflecting on her own suicidal thoughts as a young girl with Seph to absolutely demonising Lucas mum after she takes her own life did not sit right with me. The idea that someone is a “coward in these circumstances feels like an archaic and outdated point of view. I hated it, and it didn’t add anything to the story or characters development - why was it necessary?

Let’s not also forget that Sandra was a disabled person, and the way her condition and mental health struggles were portrayed was just awful. Does she deserve a mum of the year award? Probs not. But I don’t think it was necessary to turn her into a villain.

Let’s face it. There isn’t any representation in these books (disabled villain aside) but the fact that the only real mention of LGBT was about a gay prostitute being picked up by the corrupt male police deputy Ugh. Again, it didn’t sit right with me.

Finally, how can we forget that even the strongest and most badass FMC can’t have a happy ending unless she’s getting married and having kids? Even though Hades had adamantly stated, she wanted neither of those things earlier in the book. Meh.

Tate James, aka: The Queen of Addictive Reverse Harems.

MAN OH MAN DID I LOVE THIS FINALE. I was a little shocked when I saw it was over 700 pages, but trust me we needed it. It was such a beautiful conclusion to Hayden's quest for vengeance and I was so happy to see [redacted] get what they deserved. Hayden went through SO much in this finale and I strongly suggest you check out the TWs below because there are A LOT. Hayden is the true bad bitch supreme and you better check yourself before you even think about thinking of messing with her. Her and her gorgeous harem of men are killer and I stand by them every day.

I will admit that I do love Zed and Gumdrop the most, sorry Cass.

This last book has a lovely scene where our girl does the deed by a dead body, and you bet your butt she makes direct eye contact with it.

Also, in the classic Tate James style, this does have a beautiful four-way scene where two shlongs enter the lady hole at the same time. We stan it. I expect every time now.

Overall, this was a great quartet and I adore Tate James with my mind, body, and soul.

“Thank you, he whispered.
“For what? I asked, licking my lips to savor the feeling of his kiss. He gave me a wise sort of look.
“For loving me.

While I enjoyed the last book in this series, I also thought it was a bit boring at times and found myself skim reading it.

Plus the ending with Chase was so anticlimactic that I feel like I wasted my time reading 4 books for nothing.

⚠️TW for rape (the TW in the book was not enough for what happens, and while i personally don’t get triggered i still feel that a better TW was needed)

Seeing as everyone said this is the best book in the Hades series, and because I’m in love with every book in the Shadow Grove world so far, i went into this book with high expectations. The first three books were great, Club 22 was a master piece, it’ll always be a favorite. But this one did not meet my expectations. However that does not mean that i didn’t enjoy it, i was happy to see Hades get her HEA.

Let me start with saying that i absolutely adore Hades character. I love badass FMC and she’s one of my favorite.
The banter between her men is great, her different connection to each one of them is also unique, and i can say that this is was the best thing in the last book.

What I didn’t enjoy is how the trauma and death was always brushed over and cured with sex. The sex was really overwhelming in this book.

I didn’t feel the connection in this one like i felt it in the first three books. And i didn’t feel the connection to the entire series the way i felt it towards MK which is my #1 favorite RH. But i highly recommend you read Hades- it’s such a powerful and emotional journey. And I’m really excited for the next series!

This was such a disappointing ending to the series.

Things I liked:

- The relationship between Seph and Hades and how that was concluded
- The relationship between Diana and Hades and how that was concluded
- The little bread crumbs for future works
- The relationship development with Zed

Things I didn't like:

- The way trauma was handled
- The sheer amount of sex scenes
- How there is no real emotional connection between Hades and Cass and it seems like the only thing binding them together is physical chemistry
- How Lucas just felt like a placeholder instead of a real person
- How Lucas's development was so out of the blue that instead of being the epic rebirth it was probably meant to be, it just seemed jarring and annoying
- Did I mention the amount of sex scenes? I swear, if those were removed, this book would be reduced to around 300 pages, which is the normal length of a novel, instead of the 700+ page monstrosity that it is
- The way the whole Chase thing was concluded, seriously, could there be a less fulfilling end? U showed me all the trauma he gave her on page in a lot of detail and then gave me such a shitty retribution? I feel cheated
- Even if u take away the fact that it was not fulfilling, it was very unbelievable and relied heavily on stuff she learnt in captivity when we've been lead to believe that she's been working on this for the past two books. It was just stupid and unrealistic
- Also, the people who were killed were ones that no one gave a damn about, whether it be wanting them to die or feeling heavily for theirs loss so it was pretty useless to kill them too
- The way the whole Guild plot line was resolved, though I'm hoping we'll get answers to that in the Guild series
- There's more but my hand hurts from typing so much so that'll be all

All in all, this book was one of the worst conclusions to a series I've ever read. I planned to read the Guild series after this one but now I think I might hold off on that cause I'm not ready to go through any more Tate James rn

Well that was a wild ride for sure! Holy! This was a nice conclusion to all of the angst, secrecy, tension, crime, stalking, threatening, all of the CRAZY! Chase is unhinged but it was kind of fun reading about him.

Seph fully redeemed herself to me in this book, not that she gives a shit, and I don’t want to push her down anymore! Hades annoyed me at times with her BDE but I also appreciated her more human side.

What I did not anticipate was the awesome trap for Chase or the guys real feeling and love. Lucas is it for me, I’m not greedy like Hades/Dare/Hayden/Red!!!

I really loved this series, but this final book fell flat for me.

It dragged on a lot and felt like a lot of this book was unnecessary.

But the beginning of this book just reaffirmed how much of a badass hades is.

Overall, the Hades series was okay for me. I loved the guys (Cass!!!), I loved Hades, but the story itself lacked the spark that I felt when reading MK's in comparison, despite the fact that the idea of it all (crazy ass ex-fiance come back from the dead for revenge) was fascinating.

Ok. So this ended on a pretty good note.

I can’t say it was my favorite.
Almost solely because it was single POV.
I just can’t shake my preference for being inside ALL the MCs heads.
I did finally find a groove after the second book where I could sort of ignore that burning need-to-know feeling. But I do 100% think this series would’ve been better if we’d gotten more than one chapter each inside their heads.

Other than that I really enjoyed reading about these villains.
Hades was a definite badass. Which is my favorite type of heroine.

Then there was the three men.
Lucas with his sweet heart and massive 🐓.
Cass with his surprisingly loving ways and his rough hands.
And Zed. With his undying loyalty and his unshakable soulmate level connection with Hades.

They really balanced each other and I loved seeing their relationship build and grow throughout all the twists and turns the author took us on.

Plus the sex was absolutely explosive and sexy as all hell. The group scenes had me thirstier than should be fucking legal.

I’m glad I picked this series up.

I’m also glad I skipped the MK series. I don’t think I’d have picked this one up afterwards if I had. Especially not if they were also single POV like I suspect.

I’m happy to know I pushed through my frustration with that and got a satisfying HEA, but I still don’t think I’ll be moving on to the next connected series.

It was good.
It was entertaining and sexy.
But I think I’ll just leave things in Shadow Grove where this book sets them.
I’m happy with that.
And I’m even happier leaving this single POV shit behind. Lol

“I wasn’t an empty shell. I was a goddamn survivor.

Well. This book was .. lacking.
Let me start off by saying that the beginning of the book was fantastic. We finally get Hades rescued and I think the author did a really good job of keeping the thoughts and feelings authentic when it comes to being raped and kidnapped by her longtime abuser and torturer.
The men in her life were completely sympathetic and treated her like a victim deserves to be treated during the physical and mental healing of what she went through.
I’m not going anywhere, he whispered in my ear.
“No matter how long it takes, I love you, Dare. That will never change, and I’ll never stop waiting for you.

It took me two months to read the book up to 60% because it just dragged on and on and on. And then it was nothing but sex during the most random moments. We’re trying to find Chase Lockhart here but her guys are constantly wanting to fuck her. I get it. We love smut. But this was the first time ever where I was thinking this is just ridiculous with too much sex.
I ended up skipping towards the end with speed reading and I have to agree with a lot of reviews I read the ending was.. SO LACKING in the revenge. Like wtf happened there?!

I waited two months to finished this book that wasn’t holding my interest to get that kind of ending?
I see why Seph is leaving.
😂
No really. I am absolutely obsessed with the Madison Kate series. But I honestly sold my first couple of paperbacks in the series because I know that it’s just not gonna be worth re-reading for me.
I am hoping The Guild Series brings my love back for this world.

Can someone tell me how can i convince the author to write another book for this series? 😭😭holy wow. I love Lucas... i also love Zayden ( he is my fav)... but i think i like Cass more.. 😭😭. I was waiting for this book for so fucking long, i was desperate after how Club 22 ended and when Timber landed on my kindle, forget assignments and class works..they can wait but this cant. I finished it in one sitting and i want more now!! This series is Tate James Best series ever. There is romance, plot twist after plot twist, kill me now or give me the book cliffhangers and badass heroine with her badass heroes...one of them being a gumdrop 🥺🥺. The chemistry they have, especially Zayden and Hades ugh i love these two. The bonding between the guys is also fantastic, especially Lucas and Cass, Lucas being the youngest in the group and Cass being the oldest they have an amazing friendship. I seriously need more. Dear Tate James, for the love of God and my sanity, give me another book.

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 Boss stars!

This series was incredible!
Seriously... I honestly can't complain about anyone! Not a single character!

Hades was such a complex and intense female Boss bitch and lead character... She fucking owned this whole series!
I liked Madison Kate... But Hades is another level entirely!

After the way that club 22 ended, with that mindfuck of a cliffhanger, i was curious about how timber would follow...
The beginning was hard to listen, I'm not gonna lie... Chase really did a number on her and it was rough!
Everything was raw and cruel, and when she was finally rescued, she was really broken, but still fierce to overcome her trauma! I adored her even more after that!

This book dragged a bit more than the previous one, with a long revenge list, but it was so well done, that i can't complain much!

The chemistry and connection between all of them...
The evolution of every character along the series, the growth of their feelings and their acceptance of each other was amazing! The sex and again, the chemistry, was out of the charts and i loved that every single one of them were loved and cherished equally but at the same time, in their own way.

I loved how it ended and it was perfect in every single line!

I can't wait for the guild to be finish, so I can read that one too, cause if there's something I've learned reading Tate James, is that I can't handle the waiting game after her cliffhangers! 😂

🎧 About the Audiobook Narration 🎧

Not one single complain here!

Narrated by Noelle Bridges and Lucas Webley in a perfect dual participation, where he did all male voices and she did all the females.

The whole book is told from Hades POV with the exception of one chapter per book. But every interaction is narrated by both and it's my new favorite kind of narration!

They just made this whole experience something even better, especially Lucas, cause he was so good with the difference between the guys, that I could swear that it was narrated by 4 different men entirely!

Chef's kiss!

What an ending! This was a wild ride y’all as the book is about 750 pages so buckle up and enjoy the journey. Honestly, if you’ve enjoyed the series, you’re going to love Timber. We get everything we needed from this final book and I am so pleased with the ending. Im incredibly sad to say good bye to this group as they have become my favorite group Tate has ever written. This is also my favorite book in the series. We definitely get next level spice as well as an incredible plot. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m sad that the series is over.

Also; can I just say chapter 62👀🥵🥴😮‍
I’ll be rereading that one.🥲

I cannot fathom the right words for a proper review right now, so i’ll have to come back and make a proper one after my mind processes everything.

But my gosh, i enjoyed every single page of this book.
Daddy Cass, is still my absolute favorite man. I just want my own Grumpy Cat😅😮‍💨

5.000.000 stars ⭐️ for this freaking fantastic finale of one of the best series I’ve read this year!
This was a tough one to read, especially after that heart wrenching ending of the previous book and then the first chapters happened and holy sh!t it was too much!
Like I said in a previous review, I can’t actually say much because it’s definitely going to spoil something (there is SO MUCH going on 😱), but I will say that Tate James is a master of RH!!! These relationships are exactly what they should be (in the MK series and in this one even more so) where the characters complement each other and not tear down one another!
Lucas brought light and gentleness to Hades’s darkness.
Cass saw her darkness, embraced her and gave her the strength she didn’t know (or refused to see!) she needed.
And Zed Zed was her soulmate, made from the same cloth, a perfect mirror image!
And Hades herself?
She is the most unconventional heroin I have EVER read about and I loved how she made all these badass gangsters tremble in fear and then go home to her men and fall apart, showing all the pieces that were broken
This whole series was, simply, put extraordinary .
