once I got over the mental hurdle of THERE'S FUCKING ZOMBIES SURROUNDING THE COUNTRY HOUSE, WHY IS EVERYONE WORRIED ABOUT SOLVING A DAMN MURDER MYSTERY, this turned out to be a pretty absorbing experience. because I'm a fan of both country house and locked room murder mysteries, and also zombies devouring the living, this mash-up successfully pushed some very specific pleasure buttons. and I appreciate that the wave of zombies surrounding the house essentially made this a double locked room mystery - woah! now that's different.
I think I guessed the killer? I mean, I did figure it was that one character and I was right, but I also thought it could have been that other character, or possibly that other other character. let's just say that I figured it out, super-smart mystery-solver over here. but I never figured out the how and in locked room murder mysteries, that's half the deal. so I guess I'm only half-smart.
Imamura is a fine writer. deft characterization, tight pacing, conundrums, all the good things. kudos to the translator.
don't do like I did and try to set some horror novel atmosphere by reading this late at night along with some sinister music. I was absolutely not scared and the novel is not trying to scare anyone. it's an intellectual exercise and a fine one at that. gruesome riddles not screams of terror. there are multiple zombie attacks, sure, but the feel is more Who killed Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the library? than angsty scared folks trapped in a house vs Walking Dead.
synopsis: a bunch of mainly female students and some loathsome graduates who are on a pussy hunt all find themselves trapped by zombies in a country house; as the zombies begin taking over the house floor by floor, various predatory assholes in the group start getting picked off one by one by a mysterious yet relatable killer. go killer go!

Huhh...this novel received a lot of praises for its plot twists , well said plot twists are nice enough.......but it's not THAT level of great yet. It's an impressive novel, I will keep an eye on this author's other creation.
PS: let me tell you one thing: hoping to read more books during self-isolation and work-from-home period during the time of the freaking WuHan virus outbreak probably doesn't work so good, I still have ton of unread and half-finished books to work on. *sighs

This is the English translation of the Japanese novel Shijinso No Satsujin (2017) by Masahiro Imamura. It is the debut novel of the author.
Shinko University¡¯s Film Club plans an annual summer trip to a countryside boarding house named the Villa Violet where they will shoot a ghost film as part of their club activities. Ten students decide to participate, though not all of them are members of the film club. In the previous year¡¯s trip, some unpleasant incidents had taken place and hence many members of the club are not willing to go this time. Consequently outsiders get invited which include the narrator Yuzuru Hamura, a first year student and Hiruko Kenzaki, a second year student. Hiruko has solved several criminal cases in the past and has been rewarded by the Police. In addition, the son of the owner of Villa Voilet together with his two friends, all of them alumni of the University, also participate, thus making a total of thirteen guests. It is suggested that the list of characters provided at the beginning be printed and referred to while reading the book as it might be difficult to remember so many names (especially Japanese names !)
The hotel consists of three floors with the lobby and reception area on the first floor and the guest rooms on the second and third floors. Floor plans of all the three floors are provided at the beginning. It is suggested that these be printed on separate sheets of paper and referred to while reading the book to have a clear understanding of the events.
The first day at the hotel ends with a ¡°test of courage¡± where the group has to visit a creepy shrine in pairs. But on the way, they are attacked by a horde of zombies! These zombies were created by an act of bio-terrorism at a nearby music festival. Some members are killed and the rest rush back to the hotel and flee to the upper two floors, barricading themselves against the waves of zombies below.
Early next morning, a guest is found murdered in his locked room in inexplicable circumstances. His body has been horribly mutilated by biting. Two handwritten threatening notes are found, one inside the room and the other outside wedged to the door. The deep biting marks indicate a zombie, but only a human being could have opened the locked room and left the threatening notes. Even assuming that the murder was committed by a zombie, how did it enter the locked room, bypassing the barricades and later leave without anyone noticing?
Further murders take place in seemingly impossible circumstances. In the meantime, the zombies move in closer and closer. They manage to break through to the second floor, making the residents flee to the third floor. Finally, they are able to break into the third floor and the guests have to flee to the roof-top. By then, Hiruko is able to solve the case and she explains the solution to the rest. Her explanations are a remarkable exercise in logical deduction.
It may be noted that the author has created a closed circle situation in a unique manner. Here the characters are cut off from the outside world not by storms or seas or broken bridges but by zombies!
This is an outstanding, impressive and engrossing novel---a must-read for mystery fans. In addition to a mystery, it is also a delightful thriller. The solutions to the impossible murders are quite clever and original. The suspense is maintained throughout the book till the end. It is a fair-play mystery since all the clues are provided, though I doubt whether a reader would be able to guess most parts of the solution. Considering all these aspects and also the original and unique theme, I rate it as 5 stars. Highly recommended.

Murder at Shijinso bercerita tentang Hamura Yuzuru dan Akechi Kyosuke, anggota Klub Pencinta Misteri, yang menerima undangan Kenzaki Hiruko, si gadis detektif misterius, untuk menghadiri acara menginap di Vila Shijinso yang diadakan oleh Klub Peneliti Film. Tujuan mereka adalah menyelidiki sebuah surat ancaman yang Klub Pecinta Film terima. Acara musim panas yang semarak itu berubah saat sebuah serangan zombi terjadi, memerangkap para pengunjung di vila itu. Masalah semakin bertambah saat mereka menemukan mayat salah seorang anggota klub bersama surat yang menandakan kalau pembunuhan masih akan terus berlanjut.
Sebuah novel tidak biasa yang menggabungkan genre misteri-detektif dengan zombi. Masahiro Imamura berhasil menggabungkan kedua genre ini dengan cara yang menarik. Misteri pembunuhan dan zombinya mampu saling melengkapi satu sama lain.
Karakter utamanya juga cukup menarik. Awalnya terlihat straight-forward seperti tokoh detektif lain dengan sidekick-nya. tapi ada usaha untuk memberikan sedikit twist pada penokohannya. Tentu juga ada kejutan dalam cerita yang tidak akan saya bocorkan di sini XD
Kasus pembunuhannya juga menarik. Ada beberapa bagian yang mengejutkan, tapi juga menimbulkan perasaan kalau kasusnya berbelit-belit. Setidaknya logika di dalam ceritanya masih bisa diterima.
Secara keseluruhan, Murder at Shijinso adalah novel dengan premis yang menarik serta eksekusi yang memuaskan. Semoga buku selanjutnya juga bisa terbit di sini.

Such a unique book! An intricately plotted impossible crime, a country house setting for a closed circle murder, and a zombie siege all fit together perfectly to make this a strange and wonderful reading experience. I was skeptical that all the threads could be brought together, but Masahiro Imamura (and translator Ho-Ling Wong) did a brilliant job bringing everything together at the end. Highly recommended for fans of locked room mysteries who are looking for something that's both clever and unique. An introduction by S¨ji Shimada gives a fascinating glimpse into why the book was a huge hit in Japan.

Ini pertama kalinya gw baca cerita misteri yang ada elemen zombinya. Kalau biasa penulis buku misteri pakai faktor cuaca atau lokasi yang membuat tempat pembunuhan terisolasi, Masahiro Imamura bisa dengan cerdiknya menggunakan zombi. Selain mengisolasi, zombi ini juga sukses membuat penyelidikan jadi lebih membingungkan. Mungkin "kebaruan" ini juga faktor penyebab Murder at Shijinso menang banyak penghargaan.
Dari awal sampai akhir bener-bener page-turner dengan narasi sudut pandang orang pertama yang mudah sekali dipahami. Ada sedikit tambahan bumbu romance juga pas melengkapi proses penyelidikan misteri dan aksi bertahan hidup melawan zombi. Menurut gw, kekurangannya ada di bagian pengungkapan pembunuh yang tidak semenakjubkan ekspektasi awal (ekspektasi tinggi karena buku ini banyak menang penghargaan). Dan juga beberapa hal yang memiliki potensi tinggi tapi kurang dimaksimalkan.

Ngga akan spoiler, cuma mau curhat kesan pribadi aaaah.
Ini kesekian kalinya aku baca buku tentang detektif. Ini kesekian kalinya juga aku baca tentang zombie.
Tapi, seingatku, ini pertama kalinya aku baca perpaduan antara detektif dan zombie dalam satu buku.
Dan, ternyata, aku menikmatinyaaa ?
Rasanya kayak kembali ke zaman-zaman pas aku SD-SMP aku doyan bener cerita detektif beginian ?
Kalau suka cerita detektif yang diajak mikir siapa pelakunya, apa motifnya, gimana, kenapa... nah buku ini bisa jadi pilihan. Lumayan diajak mikir sepanjang cerita ?
Saking keponya, aku gamau lepas dari buku ini.

Apakah ini pembunuhan berkedok zombie atau invasi zombie berkedok pembunuhan? Novel yang menggabungkan misteri pembunuhan dalam ruang tertutup berganda dan invasi wabah zombie.
Dalam cerita misteri thriller pembunuhan terdapat 3 konsep yaitu whodunnit¡ªsiapa pelakunya, whydunnit¡ªmengapa melakukannya [motif pelaku], dan howdunnit¡ªbagaimana melakukannya [trik pembunuhan]. Dan novel ini berisi ketiganya.
Peringatan pemicu: mengandung kekerasan, grafik pembunuhan yang sadis, darah, dan bunuh diri.
Actual rating: 4.5??
Berkisah tentang Hamura, seorang mahasiswa sekaligus pencinta misteri, diajak oleh kakak tingkatnya, Akechi, untuk ikut kegiatan klub film kampus ke sebuah vila bernama Shijinso. Mereka akan membuat sebuah dokumenter "uji nyali" horor di sebuah hotel tak terpakai di dekat vila Shijinso. Ternyata ada misteri dan teka-teki yang menyelebungi kegiatan itu. Mulai dari seorang mahasiswi yang bunuh diri dan sosok yang tidak diketahui siapa muncul di dokumenter klub film tahun lalu. Tetapi, semua rencana itu berantakan karena mereka dikepung oleh para zombie. Mereka terjebak di vila "orang mati". Dan terjadilah pembunuhan di sana.
Dari segi premis cukup unik. Meski di awal agak sedikit lambat "panasnya" karena tidak tahu apa yang menjadi fokus utama dari para tokoh di novel ini. Bayangkan kamu terjebak di antara para zombie, tetapi yang kamu pikirkan adalah malah memecahkan kasus pembunuhan yang terjadi di dalamnya. Pembunuhan yang seolah "memfitnah" zombie sebagai pelakunya.
Namun, perlahan semua terjawab. Tiga konsep itu pun dikemas baik di sini. Yang membuatku cukup tercengang di konsep howdunnit-nya. Sungguh keberadaan zombie malah menjadi "berkah" bagi pelaku.
Karena tokoh-tokoh di sini kebanyakan anggota klub film, maka dibahas juga tentang film-film bertema zombie [aku mencatat rekomendasi filmnya], sejarah zombie, bahkan sampai filosofi zombie bagi setiap karakter di novel ini.
Analogi Homles-Watson di sini untuk hubungan Akechi-Hamura dan Kenzaki-Hamura, seperti sudah saling memperebutkan Watson. Tapi, sayangnya porsinya tidak seimbang, ya karena [redacted].
Dan karena ini dari sudut pandang Hamura [ada juga dari sudut pandang seseorang yang lain, tapi sangat sedikit] sehingga tokoh-tokoh yang lain kurang tereksplor karakternya. Terus setiap ada yang mati, seperti yasudah lewat saja. Ini bukan genre survival sih, lebih menekankan ke penyelesaian teka-teki pembunuhan ala detektif [tapi masih mahasiswa].? Serta masih gantung di bagian wabah zombie. Mungkin karena ya seperti disebutkan barusan, ini lebih ke "pembunuhan di shijinso" jadi aku melihat zombie-nya hanya sekadar daya tarik untuk menambah ketegangan saja.
Meski begitu, novel ini cukup sangat bisa ku nikmati. Pembunuhan di ruang tertutup apalagi ditambah teror zombie, sangat direkomendasikan bagi para pencinta novel thriller detective.

cukup menegangkan untuk novel misteri yang dibalut dengan bumbu-bumbu zombie. bukan novel jepang kalo gw gak bingung sama tokoh2nya WKWKWK meskipun udah ada daftarnya di awal tp gw tetep aja lupa si ini yang mana itu yang mana. but overall, ga masalah krn pas baca ya sekalian aja kenalan ((meskipun kadang lupa lagi)).
buat alur ya kalo lo mau novel yg isinya macem aouad yg betarung ama zombie jangan harap. menurut gw fokusnya di sini tuh lebih ke.... gimana cara mereka mecahin kasus pembunuhan yang ada di villa tempat mereka survive dr kejaran zombie itu. soalnya kadang adegan zombienya malah jd kelupaan HAHAHAH.
menurut gw, cukup banyak pesan2 tersirat yang penulis sisipin di sini kayak kita tuh manusia kadang juga udh merupakan representasi dari zombie itu sendiri: idup ya idup tapi yaudah gitu kerjaannya cuma nurutin nafsu & ego kayak gapunya akal /asik. ohya, terus juga motif pembunuhannya gewlaaaa sih!

Selama baca buku ini dibuat bolak balik halaman awal untuk mastiin dan mengingat nama? karakter dan denah hotel ..
Untuk orang yang susah ingat nama? tokoh di novel, agak bingung dan memusingkan apalagi ada cukup banyak karakter yang terlibat di novel ini plus saat menyebutkan nama karakter di dialog awal pake nama depan pas di dialog yang lain pakai nama belakang dan plus lagi harus inget denah lokasi kamar? yang ditempati para tokoh dan seluk beluk lokasi tempat? yang lain juga..
Tapi untuk keseluruhan bisa menikmati alurnya ?
