Rising Danger by Jerusha Agen is a Christian romantic suspense novel set in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the surrounding suburbs. It’s the first book in the Guardians Unleased series. When someone plants explosives on dams in the Twin Cities, Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency is called in to help. Bristol Bachmann and her K-9 partner Toby are assigned to help with explosive detection. The dams safety supervisor, Remington Jones, turns out to be Bristol’s ex-boyfriend from six years ago. An environmental terrorist wants the dams gone and is determined to not let anyone or anything stop his freeing of the river.

Bristol is dedicated to ensuring no one gets hurt, but her past with Hurricane Katrina has made her one that doesn’t like surprises and always wants things controlled. She doesn’t forgive others easily and can seem vexatious and angry at times when others fail to live up to her expectations. Remington made mistakes in his past and is still paying for them with his family and with Bristol. However, he has turned his life around, if only they could recognize it. He seems to need approval from others that he isn’t getting. They both have a depth of character that makes it easy to like them, but also feel their frustrations. The other characters have a variety of depths and hopefully, several of them will be featured in future books in the series. Toby and the other K-9 partners are a highlight in the book.

This debut novel combines a second-chance romance with suspense, action, hope, family, faith, friendship, courage, honesty, and integrity. The feeling of danger is relatively high throughout most of the novel. The writing flowed well and the stakes were high throughout the story. While there weren’t a lot of surprises, there was enough conflict to keep things interesting and the suspense is built as the investigation evolves, searches for bombs are underway, and discoveries are made. The world-building was good and readers can easily envision Bristol, Toby, and Rem seeking explosives in and around the dams. Some additional themes involve public opinion and perception versus reality and how that can affect lives. Additionally, there are consequences to actions that may not be anticipated.

Overall, this was intriguing and full of tension with compelling characters that kept me turning the pages. With a fascinating story, it kept me fully engaged in learning who the terrorist was and whether or not the dams would survive. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. Readers who enjoy Christian romantic suspense will likely enjoy this novel.

This is a Romance Suspense. I have to say I found this book just ok. I found the suspense parts much better then the romance parts. I also did not find the suspense parts very suspenseful. The characters was just ok. This book did not make me want to keep reading, and at times I had to make myself pick this book up. I did enjoy the ending a lot. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Love Inspired Suspense) or author (Jerusha Agen) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This was a very good suspense novel with a really well developed plot. I love dogs and the K9 elemental was well done also. A mad bomber on the loose in multiple places means there is a rush to bring him down. If you enjoy inspirational suspense, this will hit the spot!

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. I was not compensated and the opinion in this review is my own.

Agen’s premise immediately intrigued me. I’ve read dozens of romantic suspense novels but never one about a K-9 bomb investigator part of an elite private female force. Plus, Bristol and her canine Toby are combatting an environmental terrorist threatening to blow up dams and destroy thousands of lives. Talk about a page-turner!

Elements I enjoyed include all the furry friends part of the elite team and the details Agen shared about her heroine’s bomb (and grenade) disarmament knowledge. I feel like I actually learned something from this book! Then there’s the chemistry between Bristol and Rem that will make romance-loving readers swoon. Finally, I appreciated that the character’s faith journeys were presented naturally, not forced. Characters wrestle with very real questions about pain and suffering. Agen didn’t gloss over the hurt but did reveal the biblical response in a clear, compassionate way.

I’m curious to see where Agen takes this concept next and would love to see sequels for other squad members, including the sensitive Cora, mysterious Amalia, and the nerves-of-steel leader, Phoenix herself. Agen is an author to watch!

Second chance at love stories have always been a favourite or mine.

This was mixed with suspense, intrigue and mind-blowing action. Amazing!

Rising Danger was captivating, the story was lipbiting, the characters brought a lot of life into the story.

The tension between Rem and Bristol was electrifying and exciting. But I loved how well they worked together.

Lovers of suspense mixed with a sweet dose of romance would love this book.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

From the compelling opening scene to the hair-raising conclusion, Rising Danger delivers a page-turner (or compulsive listener in my case) triumph.

Any K-9 story is always a lure for me and Labrador Retriever Toby is the true hero of this one. Loved the training details and getting the inside scoop on the day-in-the-life of a K-9 team. I fell in love with Toby's goof ball side as well as his focused on-the-job persona. His partner, on the other hand, took time to warm up to.

That's because Bristol is hyper diligent when it comes to...well everything she does. She has a need to be in control, a compulsion actually. And an unforgiving nature. Which becomes all too evident when she's forced to work with her ex-boyfriend on the most important case of her career. My, but she gives poor Remington a hard time right from the get go and doesn't let up for the majority of the book.

Rem has changed since his police academy days. Back then, his devil-may-care, roguish ways got him expelled and caused him to lose the woman he loved. But Rem has become a Christian in the intervening years and his new faith has transformed his life. If only Bristol could let her guard down long enough to notice! There's plenty of angst in their romance and I was solidly on team Rem all the way!

Love how the author takes the time to develop solid faith threads that bring extra depth and meaning to the story. So many wonderful truths spoken (not preached) into the lives of these characters (and readers!)

Intense suspense, with tons of action and a hair-raising, doomsday kinda vibe from the environmental terrorist angle had me holding my breath through most of the read. But all that intensity is punctuated by lighter moments too and I especially enjoyed getting to know the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency's diverse all-female team. (Yay, girl power!) I'm looking forward to reading their stories in future novels.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Eleanor Caudill and enjoyed the way she captured the intensity of the suspense and the emotions of the characters. Really plummeted me into the heart of the story.

Hold on to your seats, because Rising Danger is going to take you for a ride that you don’t want to end!

This suspenseful tale is full of twists and turns as Bristol and Remington try to stop a terrorist from blowing up dams along the Mississippi River. Bristol’s K-9 sidekick, Toby, is her highly trained, bomb sniffing dog and he calmly steals the show on more than one occasion.

Both Bristol and Remington have a need to be in control, although at varying degrees. Bristol has zero faith in God as she believes he allowed her father and sister to perish in Hurricane Katrina. Remington’s failures at the policy academy and subsequent rejection from his father have him wanting to prove his worth to Bristol as they try to take down this terrorist together.

While this definitely fits the bill for romantic suspense, I enjoyed the romantic elements more. The majority of the suspense occurred in the last few chapters, but once I got there, I loved it just as much! I was so proud of Remington for his approach to Bristol in regards to their relationship. No spoilers here, but those portions alone were some of the most well-written in the entire book.

There were several secondary characters, most of them members of the Phoenix K-9 squad that I believe will be featured in future stories. These ladies and their doggies have many more adventures and bad guys to hunt down, I know!

Water is rising and so is the danger...

If a person is going to try out a new-to-them author and a new line of romantic suspense novels, Danger Rising is the way to go! Seriously, every bit of Jerusha Agen's latest from Love Inspired Suspense is tense and really keeps you glued to the page!

Love Inspired Suspense has been known for quite a few years now for their well written 220ish page romantic suspense titles. But, they have now delved into full-length novels. Danger Rising is one of, if not the, first 300+ page offerings. I've been a fan of the shorter ones for several years so I was pretty excited to hear about this book from Jerusha Agen.

Between you and me, though, what really caught my attention was the K-9 bomb-sniffer on the cover. I love K-9 stories whether they are therapy dogs or law enforcement, hey I even love romantic suspense with a good pet dog.

As to how I liked the story and the new-to-me author? Well, both were not bad at all. In fact, Jerusha Agen had me so into the lives of her characters that I had a love/hate with Bristol, though I sincerely liked Remington 'Rem'. If an author can elicit that much emotion out of me I'd say they were pretty good. Danger Rising was a great read and it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering if the bomber would succeed...

(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

"Rising Danger" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. Bristol and her bomb-sniffing dog were cool and confident in the face of danger, and they repeatedly faced danger in order to keep a large city safe. Bristol lost family members during flooding, and she doesn't trust God to care enough to keep anyone safe. It's up to her. She's determined to control everything she can to provide safety. This need to make people fit into her definition of safe dooms many of her relationships, like with Remington in the past. She won't forgive him for not living up to her standards but can't resist getting lost in his melty chocolate brown eyes. As he later realized, she was more in love with the idea of what he could be than with who he actually was.

Remington was irresponsible in the past, but he found forgiveness in Christ and changed. He's determined to prove this to Bristol. Unfortunately, he doesn't like his job, doesn't bring out the best in Bristol, and goes about proving how responsible he is by being irresponsible. (Which he realized by the end, where real change and healing happened.) As head of security for a bunch of dams, it's his job to increase the security after the bomb threats by convincing the owners to spend the money necessary to prevent bombs from being placed. Instead, Bristol's boss ended up doing his job because he wasn't. He escorted Bristol around to search for bombs (which someone else could have done) and tried to figure out who the bomber was because it would make him a hero if he did so before the FBI team.

The suspense was high due to the continual danger. Unfortunately, the author apparently didn't realize how damaging even a small breach in the dam could be due to the highly erosive power of fast-flowing water (as seen at Glen Canyon Dam in 1983, among other examples). The assumption was that the bomb would have to destroy a substantial amount of the dam when that's not actually the case. I liked the characters individually and how they developed by the end, but it was exasperating to see them initially attracted to each other for all the wrong reasons (like his need for approval). By the end, they both came to a better understanding of God's forgiveness and goodness. Through that healing, they became a better match for each other. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Rising Danger is written by Jerusha Agen. This is part of the Love Inspired Trade Publications. I have never read this author before - and I will be looking for other books by her. I have always been a huge fan of the Love Inspired Suspense series, and I am a bigger fan of the Love Inspired Trade Suspense. I loved getting to know the characters more and having my adrenaline pumping longer.

In this book, Bristol Bachmann and her K-9 partner, Toby are helping assist in locating bombs in busy Twin Cities. Someone has target the damns. Bristol is new to the Phoenix K-9 agency and is trying to prove her worth. Phoenix K-9 is a search, rescue and security business that is run by all women. I absolutely loved this about this book. Bristol and her partner are having to depend on the dam's manager, Remington. Remington is Bristol's ex boyfriend. He had betrayed her trust when they broke up. Remington is thrilled to see Bristol again. Bristol, not so much.

This book will start off with a bang (literally). The action will continue throughout the whole book. The environmental terrorist sets their sites on Bristol and Toby. Remington, has changed his entire life around and is a man of God - and tries to get Bristol to see that God is always in control. Remington knows that he made mistakes and let people down, especially Bristol. However, Bristol is mad at God. She feels that God allowed members of her family to perish in Hurricane Katrina. The author has done a wonderful job in weaving in biblical truth. God is a God of second chances - and will always welcome us back into his fold no matter how many times we walk away. Remington shows her that God is indeed on their side - and they will have to rely on him while the danger is closing in.

This book has well written characters, a suspenseful storyline. I liked the premise of the book. Environmental Terrorist planting bombs that trained K-9's can find. I did not want this story to end. I want to see the stories of the whole Phoenix K9 agency. I love stories about strong women. I absolutely love the expanded story through Love Inspired.

I received a copy of this book through the author and publisher all thoughts are my own.

Please, God, don’t let anyone have been hurt. And please don’t let it be my fault.

High water, several dams, domestic terrorists and more - this one is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, perhaps even biting your nails, while waiting to see if anyone will be able to find and stop this horror before people are killed. Bristol Bachman works with her K9 Toby to find bombs before they can detonate causing damage to lives and property. Working as part of the Phoenix K9 Security and Detection Agency, she has the support of other handlers whose expertise is complimentary.

Remington Jones is the safety supervisor for the dam at the Minnesota Falls Visitor Center. While only some of his security suggestions have been implemented, he still has the feeling of responsibility for the incredible power of the Mississippi being held back by this dam and others. Along with Bristol and a host of other law enforcement officers, the hunt is on for the bomber and his bombs. Meanwhile, the river is rising due to recent heavy rains.....

An ARC of this Love Inspired Suspense was received through Harlequin Books and NetGalley. The comments and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

If you like gripping romantic suspense and K-9 stories, then I highly recommend Rising Danger. Remington and Bristol have a history with a bad ending. Fast forward a few years, Remington has become a Christian and is a changed man, but Bristol is determined to keep her walls up to defend against his charm. Toby is Bristol's K-9 partner, and they work for a private organization.. Both human main characters are likable, and Toby is all kisses and tail wags unless he's working.
The plot is fast paced and kept my interest throughout the book. I especially enjoyed a section of dialogue between Cora and Remington that took a huge weight off of Remington.
Jerusha Agen is a new to me author, and I'm delighted to have found her. I enjoy Ms. Agen's writing style. It is easy to follow. I would love to read more of this author's work since I have so enjoyed this well-written book.

Never underestimate the power of God to change people. Even when they don't believe anymore.
'Bristol resisted telling Cora her prayers wouldn’t change a thing. Their friendship was new, and they had to work together. Cora was free to believe what she wanted and grab whatever comfort worked for her.' Great. The Jesus pitch. 'I know you mean well, Grandma, but we believe different things.' 'Bristol blinked at the unexpected IED in the conversation. Too bad bomb school didn’t cover how to render grandmother-launched explosives safe.' Bristol was trying to control every aspect of her life after a traumatic experience in her childhood left her feeling helpless.

Rising Danger is the first book I've read by Jerusha Agen and I loved this thrilling, explosive, action-packed story! I will definitely be reading more of her books.

'Someone’s planting explosives on dams in the Twin Cities, and Bristol Bachmann and her bomb-sniffing dog must move quickly to find them before everything ends up underwater.' She's paired with her sweet and well trained bomb sniffing dog Toby, and her old boyfriend, the charming and irresponsible Remington Jones.

I highly recommend Rising Danger for fans of faith, romance and suspense!! I love second chance romance stories!

LOVE Inspired books are a wonderful series of books and I truly enjoy them. Rising Danger by Jerusha Agen is the lastest LOVE Inspired book I have read. Jerusha Agen is a new to me author and I always enjoy reading books by an author whose books are new to me.

Bristol Bachmann is a K-9 handler in the Twin Cities. She and her Canine partner are on a new mission, to find out who is trying to Bomb the Dams in town. She realizes she has to report to the Supervisior of the Dams, Remington Jones. Remington and Bristol had a previous relationship. Bristol is hoping they can overcome their past and be able to work together to help the Town. They discover who is behind the planting of the explosives and they know that time is of the essence, especially since the Environmentalist has discovered they are on his tail. Will Bristol, her Canine partner and Remington capture the guy planting the Explosives before it is too late? Will Bristol and Remington realize not only they work together well, but that they still see a spark between the 2 of them?

WOW, if ever I have read a Page turning suspenseful book, this is IT!! The storyline really kept me wondering what could be next. The characters really made the story and at times I felt like I was in the book with them. Rising Danger is a book about Second Chances, Learning to Trust others(Bristol has trust issues due to her own insecurities) and relying on God! FANTASTIC BOOK! A must read for those who like Suspense and Romance.

I loved this gripping story. Bristol and her bomb-sniffing dog, Toby, are on the hunt for the man responsible for the murder of eleven people at one of the many dams in and around Minneapolis. She is determined to stop him before others are killed. Her one fear is of rushing water. Water like Hurricane Katrina that killed her father and sister.

Remington (don't you love that name) Jones is the man in charge of security for the dams being targeted. He's tried to get the dam owners to upgrade their security to no avail, but now everyone is looking to him for answers as to how someone could plant a bomb at the site. It doesn't help that in his younger days, he was known to be a good-time-Charlie. Bristol is especially wary of him and his supposed change to being responsible.

There's plenty of romantic tension in the story as well as suspense. This is a book that will hold you captive to the very end! I reviewed this book in view of making an endorsement and was thrilled to do so!

Rising Danger by Jerusha Agen is a full-length Love Inspired romantic suspense novel. With tension sparking the romance and the threat of bombs detonating at every turn, it is everything a usual Love Inspired story contains, plus more. I especially love that it is a K-9 story. Toby is so adorable!

The suspense is high throughout the entire story, not just with the bomb threats, but the fact that the bomber wants to take out the dams in/around Minneapolis, which adds a flash flood danger that really hikes up the action. The only part about this story that I didn’t care for is how much they show of the rescue of a child whose mother died beside her. It didn’t seem necessary to go that far and I found it unusual for a Love Inspired story.

Admittedly, Bristol’s anger could get irritating at times, but Rem, her ex and the dam’s head of security, made up for it with his charm. My favorite part is the back and forth of the climax. The suspense there is excellent!

If you enjoy romantic suspense with a bomb-detecting K-9, try Rising Danger. I hope you’ll enjoy it, too!

I’ve not had the pleasure of reading a book written by Jerusha Agen before the release of Rising Danger, and now that I have, this author has shot to the top of my must-read romantic suspense authors.

As Bristol and her ex of six years race around Minneapolis to stop a bomber from destroying the dams of the city, they must also face their shortcomings—in both life and in their past relationship. Remington is a great hero. He’s made some bad choices, but God has gotten ahold of his heart and changed him into a better man. Bristol struggles anger and unforgiveness (to both Remington and God) over her past.

Agen weaves a strong faith thread, integral to the plot, amidst the danger, action, and romance. And with the introduction of the Phoenix K9 team, she’s set this book up as the beginning of a fantastic series (at least that’s my hope because I want to read the stories of all these women).

Rising Danger by Jerusha Agen
I chose this book because in the past I’ve been a fan of Harlequin and their Love Inspired Series. I was not disappointed in reacquainting myself with this genre.
I found the plot intriguing. The idea that our infrastructure is vulnerable to attacks and behind the scenes there may be heroes, humans and canines working to keep us safe may give readers comfort. Rising Danger has strong, flawed characters at the center of the mystery. Who can’t identify with mistakes in our past that live on in people’s memories and change the way our lives unfold for ourselves and those around us?
Bristol Bachman is introduced to us as she and her black lab, Toby are thrown into the chaos of a bomb at Minnesota Falls. The first chapter throws us right into the depths and keeps us mired in the mystery for the entire length of the book. Spiritual moments and some romance make this book a winner.

Jerusha Agen is a new to me author. I really like that she writes about K9s since I haven’t read many books like that. I found the idea of this book to be pretty interesting. I was really drawn to this book by the cover. I only briefly read the synopsis because I wanted to be surprised by the story. I found the suspense parts of the book to be pretty interesting. I did struggle with the fact that the character perspectives seemed to change abruptly. That pulled me out of the story a bit. I’m willing to give this author another chance.

Good, steady pace, Christian suspense book with lots of action, drama and some light romance. I really enjoyed it and read it in one day.

Terrorists, bombs, k9 force, an elite team of women, flooding, dams... so many things happening and lots of suspense and twists.

Underlining themes of Gods love, forgiveness, faith, redemption, trust and sacrifice. There is alot of talk throughout of Christian beliefs, prayers, and relying on faith while Bristol, Gramma, and Rem's faith (and lack of) are greatly tested. I enjoyed the spiritual element of this story. This wasn't just a "clean" book, it was a Christian book as well. I like that the author is not afraid to share her beliefs.

I also enjoyed getting to know the k9 team and I hope there will be future books with the elite team female handlers and their dogs. Highly recommend! I loved it!

What a great, action-packed story about forgiveness and trust. "But here she was, the same terror taking hold of her heart and wringing it out. The same helplessness sinking into her soul. The worst was about to happen, and she couldn't do a thing to stop it." Suspense lovers won't want to miss this. I was given a copy by Netgalley for an honest review.

An environmental terrorist bent on freeing the rivers at all costs is on the loose, planting bombs within prominent dams in the Minneapolis area. It's up to Bristol and her bomb sniffing K-9, along with former flame Remington Jones, to stop the bomber before it's too late.

Bristol is part of an elite group of female K9 handlers called in to assist the police. She is cool and collected, says things a they are, I loved her relationship with her dog Toby. Remington has come a long way from his former hard partying ways, and I admired the hardworking and dedicated man he has become, as well as his strong faith. The backstory is used effectively and helps to add depth to the story.

I loved how this book introduces Phoenix and her team, seeming to open the door for more books in the series following some of the other women and their dogs. And Bristol's grandmother is just adorable!

This is a suspenseful adventure, well researched, with strong characters and an engaging plot. I loved learning about the dogs, their abilities, and was intrigued by their handlers. An engaging read, that pulled me in, I can tell that the author put in a lot of research to bring this story to life. Great characters, strong faith, a tension fraught plot, an excellent read for fans of K9 suspense!

OfficerBristol Bachmann and her canine partner Toby arrived at the Minnesota Falls Visiting Center but unlike the people who are currently rushing from the facility, Bristol and Toby are among the agents responding to an anonymoustip that bombs have been placed not at one of the dams but at both of the dams. The damage that would be done and possible loss of life are what the agents are hoping to prevent.
As all of the agents and the Canine teams from the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency gathered, someone said the supervisor of the dam would be joining them, Then Bristol heard his voice. Remington Jones. The man she attended the academywithand later dated then broke up with. They had not seen one another since they broke up six years before. She would have been fine not ever seeing him again. But here they are working together for the safety of the people that visit and live nearby.
Remington Jones saw her. He could not believe they were about to work together again. He is the Supervisor of the dam and thought he was doing a good job but today is a day that everyone dreads. A bomb threat. So Remington has to put aside his emotions and focus on the job at hand. Maybe after the job is done Bristol would be open to talking. But that would take divine intervention.
Thank you Jerusha Agen for allowing me to be part of your launch team, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from you.

Wow! This book is a complete page turner! Jerusha Agen is a new author to me. Her story kept me engaged from page one, where the action immediately starts as mysterious terrorist calling himself Libertas, makes it known that a bomb has been set in one of the dams in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Take about tension and suspense!
This is an Inspirational Romantic Suspense Novel and I loved the natural way in which the author weaves important themes, like trusting God amidst unexpected tragedy, learning to trust others in spite of their being imperfect and flawed, forgiveness and giving the opportunity of a second chance, and more...
Bristol Bachmann has been working for some months for the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency, along with her explosive detection dog and partner Toby. As a police bomb technician, plus Toby’s bomb detection abilities, she knows she can detect and dismantle even dangerous explosives. But this sense of control changes drastically when the bomber targets the dams on the Mississippi River, and a tragedy occurs. Bristol has endured her own tragedy when she was young, and she wants to ensure that will never happen again, not only to her, but to others, if she can prevent it. But when things spiral out of control, her worst weakness -fear- comes back unexpectedly, and she battles to stomp it with bravery and courage. But is it too much to admit that she’s not as fearless as she pretends to be?
To make mattters worse, Remington Jones reappears in her life, after years of ending their relationship due to his failure to become a responsible and honest man when they studied at the Academy. Now, he’s head of Security of the Twin Cities dams, and they have to work along together to unmask the bomber that threatens to keep doing more damage, and who has targeted Bristol as the enemy. How can Bristol trust him after he betrayed her trust those years ago? Rem insists he is a changed man, but his outgoing and charming personality makes her doubt that he can be serious things and responsible in a more permanent way. If only her heart agreed on this, that’s what makes Rem more dangerous than ever. And Rem has never forgotten Bristol, and he really is repented about his earlier shallow actions, and has turned his life to Jesus and become a better, even if still flawed, man. How can she prove Bristol that his change is for good? That he can be reliable and that she can trust him, not only with her safety, but with her heart too? And most of all, can they save the cities from another tragedy?
This was a wonderful story! It was thrilling, a cat after mouse story full of suspense as they follow the clues that the bomber unconsciously gives, and as more danger and threats shower them everywhere they go. But at the same time, it was inspiring as it transpires this faith inspired message about giving up the control of your life and others, to the Only One who really has the complete control: God. About giving up your fears to him and trust Him to bring good even out of evil and unexpected tragedies. It was beautiful to see the gradual change in Bristol, not only to trust God, but to forgive and trust Rem, and give him a second chance to prove that he’s a reliable man.
The romance was sweet and clean, and even if it was not the main focus of the story, which I liked, it was so much worth it! I loved the way it all ended!
All in all it’s a complete page turner that will inspire you and encourage you to overcome your fears and trust them to He who has the real control, and who will never forsake you and always have your back, even through pain and uncertainty.
I highly recommend it! A must read that will keep you at the edge of your seat!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and via NetGalley. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

I love dogs and how faithful and protective they are. When I started reading this book, I knew it was going to be a good one just by the description of it. When you put in a story about K9s that are amazing at detecting danger I was hooked. One of the best dogs I ever owned was a lab. She was solid black and very smart. I never worried about my safety when she was around. Meeting Toby in this explosive story was wonderful. The author captures the instinct of the dog with precision and lets readers see how these dogs operate at their task. I am amazed at how they can sniff out bombs, find lost people and rescue them as well.

Bristol is a good character with a past that keeps her from trusting or even letting many get close to her. It was so heartbreaking to know that she still harbors anger from an accident that took her father and sister away. Her bitterness is not only at her mother but God as well. In her line of work she is smart , attentive is with a team that always works together. I loved learning about how she decided to take on this new position and how she knows her dog is on point when needed. I won’t go into much about the past with her and Rem because that is an important part of the story that needs to be unwrapped slowly by the readers.

The intensity of the story is good and I loved how the author incorporated dams as the main focus of the danger that could be catastrophic. Someone is planting bombs around dams and is determined that no one will stop their plan. However as Bristol and her dog start to disarm the bombs, that makes someone extremely unhappy. The action picks up here as it is a race against time to stop the person responsible for these evil acts.

Rem is someone I liked right away because was he was vulnerable around Bristol. He wears his heart on his sleeve and doesn’t hide the fact that he wants a second chance when her. In Bristol’s eyes, he can’t be trusted and doesn’t believe that he has changed. I really liked the part where Rem comes to a point where he needs guidance as he struggles with his relationships. We all can relate to how it feels when you think you have let someone down. How do you get them to forgive you? He believes that God is punishing him from all the sins he has committed. To me the most powerful part of the story is when he hears someone say to him, “He doesn’t look at you and see your sins anymore. He see Jesus and His righteousness.

The story has twists throughout and keeps readers on the edge of the seat as Bristol and the team try to outsmart the bomber. The adrenaline pumps as a hostage situation tries to distract Bristol. I loved the ending and especially how powerful the lesson about forgiveness is in this not to be missed suspenseful story. I look forward to more books from this very talented writer. Thank you for showing us that K-9s are hero’s and deserve to be recognized for their devotion to keep us safe.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Disclaimer: I’m probably not the target audience for this book, as I don’t read romances and I’m not a big fan of dogs.

What I liked:
The author is an excellent wordsmith. Her writing is remarkable, both in the beauty of the prose and the depth of emotion it evokes. And while I don’t read romances, I’m guessing this book has quite a bit more action than a typical romance. It held my interest as well as most best-selling novels, especially toward the end.

Most of all, I loved the way the author honored God throughout the book. She allows the characters who argue against Christianity to make strong, persuasive arguments, then deals with them well.
My favorite line in the book: “God's best gifts usually come as a surprise, often packaged in problems and trials. They are things we never could have planned ourselves even if we knew we needed them. For me, it was worth listening to the whole book just for that line.

The narrator of the audiobook is outstanding. Having narrated books myself, I will say, I wish I had a fraction of her skill.

What I didn’t like:

I thought the descriptions of the main character’s attraction to her love interest was a bit overdone. The descriptions of her reactions to seeing him seemed much too frequent to me, and it’s hard for me to imagine a woman could have such extreme responses of attraction toward someone she so dislikes (then again, I know very little about romance writing and even less about female emotions, so take that critique with a grain of salt).

As a pastor, father, and counselor, I didn’t like the fact that it is a story of a romance between a believer and an unbeliever. I realize Christian authors have constraints when dealing with secular publishing houses, so I don’t mean this as a criticism of the author. But since I’m not restrained by the publisher as a reviewer, I’ll say it is my conviction that such relationships are ill-advised and lead to the destruction of the believer’s faith more often than they bring the unbeliever to faith. And even when that does happen, it rarely lasts, as the movement toward God is powered by attraction to the other person, and when that fades, so does the “faith. I’ve counseled a lot of people in very hard marriages because they thought their relationship with an unbeliever would have a storybook ending. They rarely do. See 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 for God’s attitude toward close relationships with unbelievers.

More significantly, (spoiler alert) I was disappointed with the way a conversion to Christianity was portrayed, as there was no indication that repentance played any role. I got the impression from the story that a person could be saved simply by agreeing to let God be her protector. I believe Scripture is clear about the necessity of repentance for salvation (Acts 17:30, 20:21).
