The past and the present collide in the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series, threatening everything these two detectives care about.
Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?
What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads. Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one—including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past.
Falco knows the incident from eight years ago will jeopardize the partnership he’s built with Devlin, both on and off the job. If he could go back, he would—but what happened happened, and there’s a murderer on the loose. Devlin and Falco must slog through the pain to get to the truth; and so far the only truth they know is that everyone is lying.

When Devlin took on Falco as her new partner about eighteen months ago, the two mixed like oil and water. Now the two are still very different but mix like chocolate and peanut butter (yum). They are a team both in their professional and their personal lives. The days of second guessing each other are over, even when Falco's past comes back to smack him in the face (literally).
When a woman and her daughter die in a house fire that is clearly arson, Devlin and Falco are the lead investigators. The husband is an ex-cop, the daughter was suffering from a costly disease, and the couple's marriage had hit some very rocky times. The husband was found outside the house, injured but alive. Could the husband have committed double murder for insurance money? Did the marital problems have anything to do with the deaths? Welcome to a slew of red herrings, twists, and turns.
Enter Falco's disturbing past. As a former undercover detective, Falco has tried to put that sordid life behind him but it haunts his nightmares and his attempts to find peace in the present. The injured husband used to work under the same man that Falco worked for undercover. Falco despises his former boss but needs to make contact again to get make sense of the tangled mess of clues and leads. Add in two sparring and grieving grandmothers, helpful and evasive neighbors, a drug lord, and more and towards the end of the book Falco and Devlin can't make sense of anything regarding the murders. It doesn't help that the husband keeps confessing to murders that he probably didn't commit. Then things get even more convoluted from there!
Publication: December 14th 2021
Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for this ARC.
This story was, unsurprisingly, a murder mystery but it also brought back bad memories for Falco from his undercover days. When the past collides with the present will Falco emerge unscathed?
Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to the scene of a house fire where, tragically, a mother, Jana Boothe, and her 5 year old daughter, Leah, have died. The husband had been found unconscious in the front yard by a neighbour and, when roused, he tried to run in to save his family but to no avail. Jana and Leah were not burned and the black crosses on their foreheads suggested a drug or gang related killing. Boothe himself is a former police officer from Luke’s former undercover unit. Had he gone rogue?
When questioned Boothe confesses to the killing. Falco and Devlin are unconvinced. For starters - how did he end up unconscious on the lawn? Why does the neighbour keep changing his story? And how is O’Grady’s undercover unit involved? The investigation keeps leading them to Falco’s former unit boss Lieutenant O’Grady who Falco claims is very bad news. The team is a law unto itself and really skirts the law to get results. Falco is no longer welcome with the group. But the more they investigate the more O’Grady seems to be involved in something bad.
At the same time grandma Boothe and grandma Scott (Jana’s mum) who don’t really get on that well are keeping secrets and plotting something. This is one of the most interesting aspects of the story. I really liked the rogue grannies!
Falco has tried desperately to keep his past in the past. He has not told Devlin anything about it as he is afraid he may have done something truly awful. If only he could remember! This is possibly the best book in this series so far. The plot was very interesting. I did have suspicions which were correct but it was never a sure thing and I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded. Many thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
Can't Go Back is an action-packed addition to the Devlin & Falco series. Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are detectives in the Major Investigations Division of the Birmingham, Alabama Police Department. The chief calls them to be in charge of a case where the victims are his friends and needs their expertise to solve. This is a case of a former undercover cop's wife and child dying in a fire that is obviously arson and personal. There are several people that they need to interview but no one is really talking. The husband/father was badly injured and is not talking. Until he confesses. But it doesn't add up. This story has many layers to unpeel and many surprises along the way. The strange thing is the father was part of of Luke's old unit when he was undercover and the head is still his old Lieutenant. And their relationship did not end well. Can't Go Back is a real page-turner and edge of the seat read as one clue leads to another and a resolution that is complicated and multifaceted. This is a mystery well done with visits from characters of the previous books. Sweet ending and another winner. I feel that it is best to read this series in order. I received a complimentary ARC from Thomas & Mercer. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
So def more romance in this one. Our couple is finally together and are fighting for each other. The H past is brought up Some of his past trauma and the h is helping him through it she is very supportive.
You def are left w a HFN but you know they are strong and solid and will be together.
‼️i didn’t like the somewhat explicit sex scene of the H in the oast w OW. Esp when he was having an affair on his wife that was pregnant and then had a baby at home 🤮. AND ESP when we don’t get those scenes with the h. HUGE PET PEEVE. I would rather at that point be told not shown in a flashback.
Overall I like the 🎧audios and listening to this as opposed to reading it. It’s was a sold 3 star series for me I wish it had more romance in the second book. And I DIDNT LOVE the undercover vibe in the last 2 books.
‼️I was also disturbed about the number of character’s in this that treat adultery like it was just a given and swept under the rug. ESP for these undercover cops. Like it’s just ok. It had a huge ick factor that it was just so blase and not talked about.
Example: Like in the case in this book. One of the victims/suspects was an undercover cop and he was of course having affairs on his young wife. No big deal just part of the job. But when it’s mentioned that his wife might have had an affair? It was burn her at the stake vibe. So yeah major ick factor.
Overall good entertainment. Not the best not the worst. Preferred to do audio on this one.

Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to investigate a double homicide. A house fire has left a woman and her young daughter dead. The husband was badly injured, but he survived.
Upon questioning, the man admits that he killed his wife and daughter ... but the detectives don't believe him for a minute. Something is off ....
Speaking to the entire family on both sides, friends, neighbors, all seem to be lying .. but about what? Why? Who or what are they trying to protect?
What they do find is that there is a connection to Falco's past. Eight years ago a Confidential Informant was found in his bed ... dead. He has no real memory of that time, but there are things that are reminiscent of this current case.
Falco needs the truth .... he doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Devlin. And Devlin needs to know to solve the current case.
This is well-written with an intriguing story line. Full of twists and turns that rival a carnival ride, it's easy to think you know who-dun-it ... not so easy, though. The characters are fleshed out and bring a hint of credibility to the plot. The conclusion was quite a surprise and unexpected. Although 3rd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I do recommend starting at the beginning .. to pick up more about the characters' backstories.
Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Amazon Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
After reading book 1 and 2 that introduced this detective duo and then gave us their history and lives - it was nice to read another installment. This plot was shocking - one that has been in the news before (and is especially bit right now, as there is a large case going in another country!). It kept me pulled in, wondering how this would all pan out.
I really liked getting to know the detectives better. They really have grown and grown on me. This was a great book 3. Entertaining and the audiobook had a great narrator.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
I might get annoyed a bit with Devlin’s attachment to Falco and some cliche plot but overall the Can’t Go Back is a nicely wrap for the final book of the series.
My thanks to Thomas & Mercer Publishing, as well as to NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Can't Go Back!
This book takes place in Birmingham, Alabama, and as in the first two books, features detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco. The detectives are stumped when they arrive at the scene of a house fire, where a mother and her child have died, only to find that nothing about the murder scene makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?
There was an astonishing number of twists and turns in this story, as well as many secrets, hidden motives, and side stories. I started getting the impression the book was red herring, after red herring, after red herring, and I felt as though some of it could have been left out.
On the other hand, it's been enjoyable seeing how the relationship between Detectives Devlin and Falco, as well as the blending of their families, have evolved. Also, I was able to figure out who the bad guy was and that never happens to me!
4.5 stars. Another great read in this series featuring Detectives Kerri Devlin and her partner Luke Falco. The initial crime takes this story on a wild ride from past to present and no way to figure out the "who done it?" until all is revealed. Just when you think the crime is solved, the story takes one more twist I wasn't expecting. I was still left wondering when the last page was read. I still had some niggling question about a few of these survivors. Were all truths actually revealed? Or was it better left as justice served and the case closed.
There was a very nice ending here romantically for Kerri/Luke. Hope there's still more to come in this series.
The final book in the Devlin & Falco series was a wild ride. It was a while since I read the other two books, but I easily picked right back up where I left off. In this book, Falco’s secretive past threatens to cause trouble between him and Devlin as well as derail their newest murder case.
A woman, Jana Boothe, and her daughter Leah have died in a house fire and the husband, a former undercover cop confesses. Devlin and Falco are blocked at every turn by questionable witnesses including the two grandmothers. Falco, once an undercover officer himself, questions his former Lieutenant for clues about the husband, Boothe’s nefarious contacts. Unfortunately, he and Lieutenant O’Grady have an ugly past together that Devlin does not want to remember or talk about. Falco has not come to terms with his past, but he is ready to move on with Devlin and their future. As the case becomes more intertwined with his past, he knows he must come clean with her if they have any chance of a life together.
This story was full of twists and turns, and I enjoyed every crazy moment of it. My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I gave it four stars.
Man patiko, su pasimėgavimu perskaičiau.
Another fabulous book by one of my very famous favorites favorite authors. always well written..
Back in Birmingham Alabama. with detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco. These detectives don't give up until they've uncovered every last detail of the crime. Sometimes it's more than they Suspect. Goes deeper than anyone realizes.
Luke Falco, Detective, Has a back story of his own. 8 years ago working for another LT. Things weren't always as they should have been.. A world that Luke Wanted to get away from. Things that cost him his family. Stuff happened that are foggy in his memory. Now wants to clear those things up.
A mother and her daughter murdered the house set on fire. This is the case for devilin and Falco.
Kerri Devlin along with detective Falco have a case to solve, Each time they think they get ahead of the case it's back to square one. Finding the killer is going to be tough. But in the end. It's a total shocker and what a twist because no one saw this one coming...
And always having your neighbors keep a eye out for you.. But in the end can you trust your neighbors. Because one never knows who they can or can't trust... Because you can't ever go back..
This was such a fabulous wild ride so many twists and turns you'll never guess who it was until nearly the end.at the end I wish there was going to be a few more books to this detective Stories .love These books.
What a ride! I could not put this book down. And lord love a duck this book had more twists than a back road in PA.
What a fabulous read. Debra Webb is a master of suspense. This book has so many facets. I could go on but I don’t do spoilers! It’s a MUST READ. Every single book in this series got better. I liked book 1, book 2 was great, book 3…BOOM!
This is the third and final book in the Devlin & Falco series. I have read the prior two books and was thrilled that NetGalley gave me the opportunity to read this prior to publication.
When we get into this book, Kerri and Luke seem to be in a good place in their relationship. The two are partners working in the Homicide division when they catch a case that begins to delve VERY close into the past that Luke has not wanted to share with Kerri.
I will say that this was not my favorite book in the trilogy - the actual mystery behind the crime felt a little too "out there" for me, but I did enjoy the journey they took to solve the case. It becomes apparent that Luke's troubled past, while he had fears that he would lose Devlin if she knew the things he had done - ended up being something that showed Falco that when you love someone correctly, you love unconditionally.
All in all I really enjoyed this trilogy. I liked the characters of Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco. Not only are they good detectives, but they are "good" people who are not perfect, but attempt to do the right thing. (We definitely learned in prior books that Kerri is capable of things that nobody thought she could do when it came to protecting her family - aren't we all?)
Can this be read as a stand alone? Yes, I think so. The characters are given enough background in the beginning that I don't think a new reader will be too lost, but I WOULD recommend picking up book 1 and starting from the beginning.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.
Can't Go Back is Debra Webb's third and final instalment in her series featuring Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco.
The police investigation into a fire at the family home of the Boothes on Chablis Way where a loving wife and young daughter die will test the detectives' relationship. At first, the fire appears to be a tragic accident. However, as Luke and Kerri question people, anomalies arise. There are buckets of secrets, hidden motives, misdirection, lies and cover-ups in this twisted family drama. Many lives are impacted by the house fire and deaths and the suspect list is a long one including the distraught husband, Logan; Jana Scott, Allison's mother; a helpful elderly neighbour, Phileas Crandall. Set in Birmingham, Alabama, the tale delves deep into Luke and Kerri's personal lives, past and present. Luke grapples with his former life undercover in narcotics whilst Kerri is attempting to trust herself to love again. Devlin and Faldo work very well together and both are hard-working and professional. A great, dark, complex and suspenseful police procedural mystery you won't want to miss, even if, like me, you haven't yet read the first two instalments.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Thomas & Mercer via NetGalley at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Debra Webb has done it again with the next book in The Devlin and Falco Series. Can’t Go Back is the third book and is well worth the wait. Webb is the master at writing suspenseful mysteries that will keep you looking for more. She will take you on a roller coaster ride and you better buckle up!! From the very start the twist and turns begin and they don’t stop until the very unexpected ending. She brings true to life characters and their stories to her intriguing books and also throws in some romance to warm your heart. She will have you looking twice at your neighbors. This is a wonderful ending to a terrific series but I am hoping for more!
Thank you NetGalley, Debra Webb and Thomas and Mercer for an advanced copy of this great book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. #netgalley #cantgoback #debrawebb #thomasandmercer #arc
Can't Go Back by Debra Webb is the third and final book in this very good detective series set in Birmingham, AL. Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are dedicated to their jobs, although they both have regrets in their past. Devlin and Falco are investigating the death of a mother and her child, Allison and Leah, in a house fire. The husband/father, Logan Boothe, is found unconscious out on the lawn. Did he set the fire or is he a victim? After he awakens in the hospital, he tells Falco that he is the one who set the fire. Something is off about the situation because he is clearly grieving the death of his wife and child. Who is he covering for and why? Also, Allison and Logan's mothers are acting suspiciously. What do they know? Can't Go Back reveals more information from Falco's past when he was deep undercover. He discovers a shocking link from those days when he trusted his LT. The bond between Devlin and Falco deepens as they plan a future together. I regret this is the last in the series. Publication Date: December 14, 2021 Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
This gripping Devlin and Falco series by Debra Webb is filled excitement and danger as the series comes to a close. After a woman and her child are found dead, and the husband confesses to the murder, detectives Devlin and Falco should be able to wrap the case up quickly. Instead the case begins to unravel something from Falco's past from nearly ten years ago. His partnership with Devlin had been thriving, and now everything could come toppling down.
The investigation that Devlin and Falco undertake is extemely intense with the partners desperate to sort the connection to Falco's past. I have loved both of the previous books in this series, Trust No One and Gone Too Far. Each book in this series could do well as standalone novels. However, if you enjoy continuity as much as I do then I definitely recommend reading this series in order. I do feel a measure of sadness that this series has drawn to a close.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
The final book in the Devlin and Falco series is a complicated tale in which the present gets mixed up in the past and all of it flows seamlessly to a fantastic conclusion. Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are partners in the Birmingham PD and are tasked with finding out who or what caused a fire that killed a young mother and her daughter. When the husband, a former police officer, confesses, neither of them totally buy into his confession and are determined to ferret out the truth. In their quest for justice, Devlin and Falco uncover some really dark truths about Falco’s past that he has not dealt with yet. With rogue cops and creepy grandmothers, this book has a lot of red herrings and tons of false trails that kept me guessing almost to the end. I won’t give anything away here, but I will say that I was able to follow the clues and guessed who the villains were, just before they were revealed. The author did a masterful job of weaving a realistic story that kept me engrossed and wanting more. Kerri is a strong female protagonist who is in tune with her partner and his needs. Luke shows his vulnerability in this final installment of the series and that was a perfect addition to his very macho character. I will miss this duo because this is one of the best detective series that I have read. Fans of suspense will really enjoy this book, but the first two should be read first so that you get to know the characters well before delving into the final book. I am still loving the Devlin & Falco series. We get the point of view from multiple characters this time. The main characters are still Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco and we get both of their viewpoints. We also get a bit from Jana Scott, the mother of the homicide victim. Devlin and Faldo work very well together. They are hard-working and professional.
Devlin & Falco are also expanding their personal relationship, trying out living together over the Thanksgiving holiday when Kerri's daughter is out of town with her father. I really enjoy how supportive and trusting they are with each other. As cops, they each have bad things in their past and aren't happy with everything they have done or seen. I love how there was no hesitation with either of them to believe the best of the other and have their back. They are truly partners.
Can't Go Back has the investigation of a homicide of a woman and child. The husband worked in undercover narcotics, with the same group Falco did about 10 years ago. Many of the old undercover team, who are secretive and insular, need to be questioned about the husband. It brings up the worst time in Falco's career. It's a dangerous and difficult case with layers of other things obstructing the truth.
Sadie Cross shows up again as a source and support for them on this case. They are building their friends and allies. I really love this series, but I would recommend reading it in order. One of the descriptions on ŷ shows this as the final installment, but I would definitely read more. The series is available in Kindle Unlimited, including the audio version.
Narration: I listened to the previous book, so I was already comfortable with Donna Postel and felt she was Kerri Devlin. I've enjoyed Neil Hellegers before on other audiobooks, but it is his first time on this series. His time was somewhat limited but I was satisfied with his performance. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.

Writing the same Book Report for all three of the Devlin & Falco books I’ve read over the past three days.
Decided I wanted to read more Debra Webb after enjoying the first in her latest series (Finley O’Sullivan). I figured, why not? I enjoyed that “free Kindle read, and I’m still in my “free 30-day trial of a Kindle Unlimited subscription, and Devlin & Falco is set in a city in which I lived for 12 years (Birmingham, Alabama), and have spent time in off and on my entire life.
Short version: Enjoyable enough, but awfully formulaic. To the point of me being reminded how I couldn’t stand Harlequin Romances back when I was younger (way, way back, like, high school young) because they were just so predictable to me. And I say this even with Ms Webb seemingly trying her darndest to make the mysteries proper quite convoluted-y. Which, of course, is not something of which I’m any sort of fan.
I think these books warrant 2.5 stars, but because I didn’t feel any compulsion to stop reading them I’m giving them 3 stars and noting for the record that I shouldn’t bother with any of her other works.
And oh, yeah, PS: That whole use of LT as shorthand for lieutenant really, really bugged. I get that it was supposed to be in-crowd slang, but it just didn't come off the way intended. Also, there was a great deal of lack of subject-verb agreement in these books. Why in the world would the publisher not spend the pennies on the dollar (literally, you can look up the rates) for a copy editor for books by such a wildly successful author?
4.5 stars This is the third and final book in the Devlin and Falco series and it does not disappoint. Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco at detectives in Birmingham who arrive at the scene of a house fire where a mother and daughter have perished and the father is injured trying to save his family. But nothing at the crime scene seems to make sense. The husband, a former undercover officer, makes a full confession but why was he unconscious on the front lawn and then ran inside to save them? What would compel him to confess if he didn't do it? The neighbours gather to lend "helpful" information and it seems they are a little too involved in the comings and goings of the neighbourhood yet no one witnessed anything or heard anything that night. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story and I definitely didn't see the end coming. It was nice to see Kerri and Luke, two flawed and struggling people, build a relationship together and we at the end we feel that they might have a chance to make it work. Great story with well-developed characters and lots of red herrings to keep your attention! Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Can’t Go Back is book #3 in the Devlin and Falco trilogy by Debra Webb. This book can easily be read as a stand alone but it does help if you’ve read at least book #1.
Devlin and Falco are back on another high profile case. The Chief of Police with the Birmingham PD has personally asked for Devlin and Falco specifically. This particular case involves previous officers with the BPD and the Chief wants this handled immediately and professionally by the best.
This story takes a lot of twists and turns and will keep you guessing until the end. There are definitely plenty of suspects and as the story unfolds there are secondary plots that will unfold that will have you wondering what the real story is. There is also the story of Devlin and Falco’s budding relationship. Things are changing and will Falco’s deeds of the past be their undoing.
Debra Webb masterfully builds a story that will keep you engaged and wanting for more. As you get deeper into the story the way Debra Webb unfolds the story before you will have you reading through the pages faster and faster to get to the mind blowing end.
Thank you #DebraWebb, #netgalley and #ThomasandMercer for the opportunity to read this book!
I was so sad to hear this would conclude the Devlin & Falco series, waaay :( I wanted it to continue. I love the growth in each book, the feeling of people I know or want to know. This one was a heart wrencher for me and not just because its the end of the series. I was getting just as frustrated as Delvin and Falco as they were lied to at every turn, half info given when info was shared. When stuff starts happening to our team, (Delvin and Falco) I had to stop, it was no, please don't take that route. I am so glad it shifted even if it did get darker. I promise I am not trying to confuse you, its just hard to share my emotions and thoughts without giving spoilers! Oh Falco, Falco, Falco you have been through the ringer and come out the other side, on your own merits my man. (wish you were my man, ha) Delvin gave you the grace and openness you need to accept the good person you truly are. Watching Delvin having her partners back 110 no matter what, was a refreshing change from how many betrayal and trust issues are handled. Win!! Having the rest if Delvins family info brought up to date and seeing Sadie were also wins! I so want to see what happens to Dog, and the future for Delvin, daughter and Falco and his son.....really this is the end? Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
4.25. “Can’t Go Back is the 3rd installment of the best-selling detective series involving Devlin and Falco where present and past collide. Their current case a double homicide in a home where a fire broke out. What ensues is a complicated journey of many people who might have been the perpetrator. “This case was way twisted. Just as soon as they discovered the end of one thread, another one frayed. We watch the continued relationship between the detectives develop, and their team work during the case was stellar. The back stories help us understand where each of them is in regard to the present. I enjoy each of these characters and have enjoyed seeing them develop into a cohesive unit. Just when you think you know the trajectory of the story and thus solve the crime the story takes another turn. You are kept guessing until almost the end of the book. For those who enjoy crime stories, this group of books are worth reading.
The final instalment in the fabulously gripping Falco and Devlin series delivers a crackingly suspenseful tale that keeps you guessing throughout.
As Falco and Devlin are called in by their LT to investigate when an ex-cops wife and child are killed in an apparent arson attack at their home. But what seems to be an open and shut case soon becomes more complicated when the detectives are informed that the mother and child were marked and the ex-cop once worked for the same LT that Falco did whilst undercover.
And with a parent who keeps admitting responsibility, lying and missing witnesses and Falco's old boss pulling strings that bring his undercover days back into sharp focus this was a great conclusion to the series and I would happily recommend it to others.

Devlin & Falco, with no doubt, became my favorite mystery (investigation) series. #3 for sure it's the best of then. Don't need to a lot of words to describe. Just read to know how this book it's so wonderful. My (first) favorite of year 2022 😁
