A royal new series from 10-Time USA Today Bestselling Author Jess Michaels.
All of Society is atwitter about the arrival of the Royal Family of Athawick, a small island country with important ties on a tour to celebrate the coronation of a new king. Or at least…that is the reason on the surface for their Season in London. Princess Ilaria knows the real her family wishes to marry her off to a man of title and influence, in order to strengthen their own “special relationship with the British Empire. The problem is that only one man has caught her eye and he does not fit any of the criteria required in a husband by her family.
Captain Jonah Crawford was part of the Royal Honor Guard that accompanied the Prince Regent on a visit to Athawick two years ago and it was there he first laid eyes on the princess. Since then, much has changed in his life, including a resignation from the position he loved and the undertaking of responsibilities he never asked for. But seeing Ilaria sparks hungers that he cannot deny.
As they continue to encounter each other, sometimes even in shocking places like infamous hells, their desire grows, but so is the danger lurking around every corner. And when Ilaria requires a bodyguard, Jonah volunteers. Will burning passion turn to love? And will love be enough to save them when the worst comes to pass?
Heat Princesses and Bodyguards and Steamy Clubs...OH MY!

Series: Regency Royals #1 Publication Date: 7/20/21 Period: Regency London Number of Pages: 212
This was a delicious beginning to what I think will be a great new series for this author. I like the premise the royal family of a small island nation pays an official visit to England and end up finding love with the most unexpected and perhaps inappropriate people. I adored each of the characters and could feel them chaffing at the weight of the crown and the demands it put on them. Each member of the family finds their own unique way of dealing with that weight and I had to admire how caring and open they were with each other while displaying a united front to the public at large.
Captain Jonah Crawford loved the navy and was so very happy to make it his life’s work. He wasn’t exactly thrilled two years ago when he was appointed to accompany the Prince Regent on a Crown visit to the small island nation of Athawick, but he knew it was an honor to be selected. However, when he looked up to watch the royal family of Athawick greeting the English visitors, he was dumbstruck. The royal princess, Ilaria, had to be the most beautiful and alluring woman he’d ever seen and when her eyes locked with his well, it was all over for him. He knew nothing could ever come of that attraction after all, she was a royal princess and he was not. He knew their friendship would be a short one and would end when he left Athawick all he had to do was protect his heart and fight the attraction until then. But two years later
Princess Ilaria, only sister to the new King of Athawick, is strong, beautiful, intelligent, and very independent she’s also very shocked and dismayed to learn that her mother and brother intend to arrange a marriage for her. A marriage that will enhance the relationship between Athawick and England, but not necessarily one that will make her happy. They’ll give her some leeway in the selection but not much. All of her life, Ilaria has witnessed her mother’s mistreatment and unhappiness due to an arranged marriage and she cannot believe they want that for her. She knows she’ll eventually have to go along with what they want, but, in the meantime, she’ll thwart their efforts as much as possible. She has to have some breathing room some freedom. The man they are focusing on for her seems to be a nice enough man not cruel but she feels not one iota of attraction for him, nor does he seem to have any for her.
It doesn’t take long for Jonah’s and Ilaria’s attraction to rekindle it happens as soon as they see each other. Jonah is determined to avoid the princess until his friend, her brother the king, asks him to keep an eye on Ilaria to keep her safe because he is sure she is up to something. GRRRROAN! How can he keep her safe and protect his heart at the same time? Then, when she is in real danger from the political intrigue that has followed them from Athawick, he has no choice. Can he protect her, keep her safe, protect her reputation, and then manage to let her go to the marriage that will be arranged for her? He knows both of them are in for a lifetime of pain. Can they endure it? It appears they will have to.
I absolutely loved both Ilaria and Jonah. Both were such adorable, admirable, and honorable characters. I can certainly see where they could/would love each other, but I didn’t see that actually happen on the page all I saw was the lust. They only started to get to know each other toward the end of the book when they were doing some soul searching. I also didn’t understand enough about the political intrigue that was threatening Ilaria’s life. Evidently, it will be the overarching mystery through the books in this series and I’ll be happy to learn more about it.
I can definitely recommend this book and this author. It is well-written and well-delivered with compelling characters and an engrossing mystery. Mostly though, it is a steamy, make-you-heart-beat-faster, romance that you will absolutely love.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of Jess Michaels for many years, and her books never disappoint! This is a great start to a promising series, and I am already looking forward to the next books.
The Royal Family of Athawick has come to London for several reasons, chief among them finding a respectable, titled gentleman for Princess Ilaria to wed to take some of the heat off of her elder brother who has recently inherited the throne. Their small island, located on a key trade route, has experienced some unrest since their father's passing, and the pressures are mounting. Under the guise of celebrating the new king's reign, Ilaria is blindsided when she is informed en route to London that she will be married before they return home. Though she is not opposed to marriage, her heart has been spoken for since she first saw the handsome captain in the Royal Navy that visited on a diplomatic mission two years ago. After a stolen moment that nearly led to more, her father warned both of them away from each other, though she has pined for him ever since.
When he sees the princess at a welcome party, Captain Jonah Crawford is struck just as dumb as he was the first time he laid eyes on the beautiful young woman. In those last two years, his life has changed significantly as he felt he had to retire his commission as an officer in the navy to assume the care of properties and tenants left to him. Since that time, he has felt something missing, so when the King of Athawick, a man Jonah respects and considers his friend, requests that someone serve as a bodyguard for his sister during their stay, Jonah feels compelled to volunteer. Little does he know that someone is plotting against the new king and that entity has its sights set on getting to him through his beloved little sister. Can Jonah keep Ilaria safe despite her penchant for seeking thrills while maintaining his cover as her security detail, or will their passion lead to further consequences?
This was a fun, fast-paced story with solid steam and engaging characters. I highly recommend it to those who love a little mystery/intrigue with their steamy goodness!
As a note, because I know some that read my reviews have preferences when it comes to their h's,

Plot --- 4.25/5 Main Characters --- 4.25/5 Supporting Cast --- 4.25/5 Steam Level* --- 3.5/5 Violence --- nothing overly graphic Language --- not egregious POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Princess Ilaria, of the of the small island nation of Athawick, is in London for the season. Her family hopes to marry her to a British peer in order to strengthen the two countries' relationship. Former naval Captain Jonah Crawford has met the princess before, as part of the Royal Honor Guard that accompanied the Prince Regent to Athawick two years prior. Jonah doesn't have the pedigree to marry Ilaria, but he is trusted by her brother, the King, to help watch over her.
This is the first book in the new Regency Royals series, and it gets off to a strong start. Princess Ilaria and the Captain had an attraction during their first meeting in Athawick, and both are still feeling it even though they know her circumstances prohibit them from any lasting connection. Ilaria isn't happy about being married off, and she's determined to have a little fun before it happens. Jonah can't hold back for long, and soon a dangerous situation sets their powder-keg chemistry up in blazes.
I really liked these characters. They felt authentic, their actions believable. The brewing intrigue, turmoil, and conclusion kept my interest. The secondary characters were in play just enough that I want to know more about them and am looking forward to their stories. 4.5 stars rounded to 5.

When Grantham, the newly crowned King of Athawick and his family come to England, his sister Princess Ilaria is shocked to see the one man she never thought she would ever set eyes on again, Captain Jonah Crawford of the Royal Navy, a man she met two years ago when he accompanied the Prince of Wales on an official visit to Athawick. The two shared an immediate attraction and indulged in a bit of flirting, both knowing their time was limited and their futures incompatible.
Jonah is in London on business, after inheriting his birth father’s property, he had no choice but to sell his commission in the Navy and take up his responsibilities as a landowner he rarely attends ton events, but is pleased to have the chance to see Ilaria again, she is just as lovely as he remembers and just as far out of his reach as ever. He knows he should stay away, but when her brother asks him to watch out for her as a favor to him, he can’t refuse.
After learning that her family means to marry her off to a British noble, Ilaria decides to rebel a bit and decides to sneak out to the Donville Masquerade after hearing her brother Remington’s description of the infamous club. There she happens to “run into Jonah, he immediately tries to get her to leave, but Ilaria refuses and has a run-in with another guest before agreeing to go, but intending to return.
They do return and this time, Jonah gives in to their shared desire but when he refuses to do more, she runs from him and is once more approached by the stranger but this time the stranger’s intent is much more lethal. And soon her whole family knows of her escapades and the threat against her. Convinced that the attacks on Ilaria are part of a rebellion brewing in their country, Grantham wants to return home, but Jonah offers to protect Ilaria and hide her away until the threat is found. He vows to protect her with his life if necessary, but will he be able to keep his heart from breaking?
I enjoyed this well-written, nicely paced story with a distinct nod to the movie “The Bodyguard. And while it mimicked aspects of the movie, it was definitely not a retelling, it is its own story, filled with secrets, forbidden love, very steamy (and abundant) love scenes, great secondary characters, cameos from Marcus Rivers and his wife Annabelle, a bit of intrigue, a dash of action, and the promise of a HEA. Honestly, I felt the ending was a bit disappointing, I thought the “solution enabling them to marry was contrived and didn’t make sense considering his “responsibilities in England (the ones that made it impossible for him to stay in the Navy), and I was not thrilled that the story ended without revealing who was responsible and sort of made it seem like it wasn’t that important I do realize that the author most likely plans to keep using this “behind the scenes villain throughout the series, but I still would have liked a bit more closure. Overall, I liked the book and I am all in for this series and would happily recommend this title!

Princess Ilaria of Athawick is being forced by her family to marry for a political advantage between their country and Britain, but she desperately wants to marry for love since she has seen how badly an arranged marriage can be first hand. She is headstrong and defiant, but she knows herself and what she wants. That includes Captain Jonah Crawford. They both know they can't be together, but that doesn't stop them from wanting each other desperately.
I'm a sucker for a royalty romance, and this one was really good. I've never read Jess Michaels before, but I'm super glad I took a chance on her. I enjoyed watching Jonah and Ilaria's relationship grow, and I could totally feel the emotion through Jess's writing. It's the little things that she made them do like holding hands or making their foreheads touch that conveys so much emotion, and I really appreciated how much detail she put into the little things. The side characters were great too, and I'm really excited for the next book. Hopefully, we get some more clues about the mystery because this one does end on a little cliff hanger.
My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer because I was enjoying it so much. I will absolutely be reading more by her!
I voluntarily received a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own. Thank you NetGalley, The Passionate Pen and the author Jess Michaels.
I was sold the moment I heard personal bodyguard.
Princess Ilaria of Athawick has arrived in London with her family to foster relationships for their kingdom. Unfortunately for her, one of those reasons is to find her a husband. Someone with a title that will be able to secure their relationship with England. That doesn't describe Captain Jonah Crawford. The man she first laid eyes on when he was a member of the Royal Guard visiting Athawick. He is the one she wants... but he is not the one she can have. But when circumstances begin to change as Ilaria seeks to gain some temporary freedom she finds herself back in his arms wishing for forever.
This was a good easy read with enough political intrigue and interpersonal drama to keep it interesting but I was left with wanting more. Ilaria and Jonah fall in love. But I honestly couldn't tell you why. It definitely seemed to come from an attraction that neither could resist. That and there first few sexual encounters are in a London Sex Club. Which I understood she wanted more freedom but also she was raised to understand the risks to her crown and I'm not sure if its something that made sense. Going there once out of curiosity, yeah sure. But multiple times even if it was with Jonah still feels incredibly risky to me. Though this brings up the fact that the book does have some spice to it. There is definitely multiple steamy scenes that the author writes wonderfully.
I think my main takeaway with this book was that since I couldn't tell why the characters loved each other I find the background characters very interesting and wanted to know their stories more. I personally can't wait to read Sasha's story. I want to know more about her.
This book is so fun! I love this new royal series already. Ilaria and Jonah are great characters. The Royal family is fascinating! I'm already very interested in each of their stories.
Ilaria and Jonah have an amazing chemistry straight off. The story is delightful. I read the whole thing in just a few hours. It was time well spent. There is no cliffhanger. Jonah and Ilaria's story wraps beautifully, but there is a feeling that the real baddie is still at large. I have an idea about where this is going. Dun dun duuuun.
I super enjoyed Jonah as a character. He's a great hero. He is compassionate, gentle, strong, ginger, all good things. Ilaria is also excellent. She is strong and smart, kind and passionate. I adore her. This story heavily features the Donville Masquerade, which is always a great time.Ìý
I have received an ARC of this book by NetGalley, and The Passionate Pen and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. The Pub date of the book is July 20th. This review will be posted on my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, Facebook page and Instagram. I'm so happy to know that it's going to start a new series. I absolutely love what Michaels writes and this one it's full of promises. I started the book and read it in a couple of hours because I couldn't stop. I wanted to know more about the characters and how they were going to deal with the things ahead of them. The feelings, the passion, the tension. Princess Ilaria and Captain Jonah were absolutely adorable, funny and strong minded characters. And oh boy, how they clicked in every moment. I felt that they could have known each other a bit better but I liked them anyway. It's not only a simple story with romance. There's so much more in here. Difficult themes and unfortunate situations. Mystery and problems that will make us think and feel all kinds of emotions. And those secondary characters? I wanna know them better! It's for sure a new interesting series and I will read them all. I'm sold. Obs: that cover is amazing!
Princess Ilaria is a intriguing character in this new series by Jess Michaels. Jonah and Ilaria are a really nice couple in this novel of intrigue and love. Jess Michaels has done it again. You can always count on her for the best and entertaining books. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Since then, much has changed in his life, including a resignation from the navy which, he loved and the undertaking of responsibilities he never asked for. But seeing Ilaria sparks hungers that he cannot deny. The first in a new series & an original theme surrounding a family from a small fictional kingdom. A very well written book with strong likeable characters, the family of mother, three children & a body double who has become a surrogate fourth child are close & love each other. However Ilaria is not a happy princess as her eldest brother & king, Grantham wants to arrange a marriage for her. Ilaria is spirited & determined to enjoy herself. Jonah is just downright gorgeous, asked by Grantham to ‘keep an eye on Ilaria on one hand appeals to him to keep her safe but their electric attraction means he’s tortured from being near to her especially when she visits the Donville Masquerade. I was drawn in from the start & was thoroughly enjoying the book until Ilaria’s life is threatened & my enjoyment spiked , I love a romance with intrigue & mystery. I adored that some characters from other series made cameo appearances. I was engrossed in the pairs road to a HEA which was strewn with huge obstacles but it did make for a wonderful read. I look forward to the rest of the series. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is my first time reading a book by Jess Michaels and it won’t be my last. For a historical romance it was surprisingly steamy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Princess Ilaria, youngest sibling and only sister to the new King of Athawick, has come to London with her family for the Season. Her brother hopes to find a prominent husband for her to help solidify the relationship between Athawick and Britain. Ilaria is crushed by this as she had hoped to marry for love after watching her mother suffer throughout her marriage to Ilaria’s father. At her first event after arriving in London she sees the one person thought to never see again.
Captain Jonah Crawford is in London on business when he receives an invitation to a soiree to celebrate the arrival of the royal family of Athawick. While serving in the Royal Navy, Jonah was chosen to accompany the Prince Regent to visit the island two years before, and became friends with Grantham, then Prince of Athawick. When he arrived and first laid eyes on Princess Ilaria he thought her the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Now he would have to watch as she was paraded around to every eligible bachelor in London. After speaking with Grantham, now the new King of Athawick, he is asked to keep an eye on her to make sure she is safe.
This is one of my favorite tropes, they clearly love each other but are separated by circumstance. Princess Ilaria needs to marry some with a title to help Athawick’s relationship with Britain. Jonah knows that because of his place in society he can never hope to marry Ilaria. After each encounter Ilaria falls more and more in love with Jonah even though he tries to stay away from her. I did feel like the end of this book was a little rushed, or maybe just vague. Perhaps will we find out more about the situation in further books though. Overall I very much enjoyed this book and it is a great start to a new series!
This is the first book in the Regency Royals series by Jess Michaels.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.
To Protect a Princess by Jess Michaels Regency Royals #1
Oh, how I love stepping into the pages of this author’s books! I am swept away to a time and place I can easily imagine and often find myself young and in love and eagerly reading to find out what I, as the heroine, will do next. In this book…sigh…well…I fell in love again and eagerly await what will happen next. The nice thing about books is that I get to be someone else every time I read a new book!
What I liked: * Princess Ilaria: intelligent, independent, strong, caring, family-oriented, dutiful, capable, likable, finds herself in a difficult situation, willing to make the best of it, knows what she wants, hopeful but accepting. Really liked her. * Captain Jonah Crawford: retired naval officer, caring, capable, strong, wise, knows his “place, overcame difficult childhood, rational, lethal, protective, knows what he wants, doesn’t dare to dream…too much…everything one could ask for in a book boyfriend. * The make-believe country aspect that allows more leeway to tell the story * The plot, setting and way the story is written * The way the royal family cares about one another and overcame the difficulties faced being royal * That it is believable * Wondering who is behind the assassination attempts against Ilaria * Revisiting places and people from previous series/books * The Donville Masquerade portions of the book…and other steamy bits :) * That Ilaria was not a shrinking violet * The way Sasha was a steadying person and friend-sister-companion to Ilaria (eager to read her story) * That I felt part of the story and enjoyed it all. * The introduction to the royal family and thinking about how the four future stories will potentially be told and seeing that Sasha is up next. * The cover…beautiful! * All of it really except
What I didn’t like: * The baddies out to create trouble for Athawick and kill Ilaria * The way royals were bartered for political gain and the impact it had/has on their lives * Having to wait for the next book in the series
Did I like this book? No, I *loved* it! Would I read more in this series? Definitely!
Thank you to NetGalley and The Passionate Pen, LLC for the ARC This is my honest review.
Jess Michaels is one of my all time favorite authors. I’ve read over 200 books this year so far and this is in my top 10 reads. Over the last 6 years (since I got my fire) I’ve read over 2000 books and probably close to 400 authors and truthfully there are only about 20 or so that I can say are my favorites. Jess Michaels is one of those favorites. I've read almost 60 of her books. She writes so well.
The stories are intriguing, fun, sexy as hell and just so damn good. I really loved this couple. Jonah and Ilaria were meant to be together. They say you can’t help who you fall in love with. Rich, poor, title, no title. Truthfully I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book because I don't normally like characters (Prince/Princesses) from other countries thrown into a Regency romance but I really LOVED this book. It was so well written and I couldn't put it down. Great read.
The writing style in this just wasn't for me - there was so much info dumping, a ridiculous amount of characters introduced in the first chapter, and it just felt very this happened then this happened then this happened. I didn't get enough background info before the inciting incident, and so I felt disconnected and honestly it felt a bit melodramatic.
I can see how others might enjoy this, but the writing style just wasn't to my personal tastes.
Amazing story of an impossible love between Princess Ilaria of Athawick and Captain Jonah Crawford, her bodyguard. Loved these characters, their story and their love for each other. Definitely had me fearing there was no HEA for this one, but Ms Michaels did it again, and in a surprising way at that. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Can't recommend enough.
A British captain, Jonah, falls in love with a princess, Ilaria, while visiting her country. When she comes to England he is tasked with protecting her. Both of them try to fight their attraction to no avail. I received an ARC from NetGalley and The Passionate Pen LLC for my honest review.
This is my freely given review for an ARC copy of this novel from NetGalley.
I have read and enjoyed many of Jess Michaels historical romances in the past, including the Mistress Matchmaker series, the Scandal Sheet series, and the Ladie's Book of Pleasures series. As I have enjoyed her books in the past, I am always happy and eager to read anything new by her. It is nice to see some themes and characters carried through, including the Donville Masquerade, and Marcus and Annabelle Rivers.
So I would give this a 3.5+ stars - a solid start to a new series. This book started out a bit slow, was a wee bit predictable, and there is some back and forth from the present story line and two years prior to set some background. But still a solid start and I see where some of the other story lines are going, and am looking forward to seeing them.
A lovely start to a new series involving a fictional nation, an ally of England, and it's royal family. The heroine is the Royal Princess and during this royal visit to London, she finds out that she is going to be used to make an advantageous marriage to a titled English lord to cement ties between her nation and England.
But of course the heart wants what the heart wants, and she also meets up again with someone from her past. Captain Jonah Crawford met the Princess while part of the Prince Regent's party during a royal visit to the smaller nation 2 years previously. They saw each other, shared one dance, and minimal meetings. Nonetheless, they still forged a strong attraction that neither forgot, which flared anew when meeting again.
However, he is significantly below her status, and they both know that she is supposed to marry for the sake of political alliances. He also agrees, out of his friendship with her brother, the new King, to watch out for her, and keep her safe, especially in case she acts out.
... now I am thinking about is this is a Regency-era The Bodyguard... but minus Kevin Kostner and more Kris Holden Reid (think Dyson Thornwood from Lost Girl - look it up, I think he would make a yummy Jonah Crawford).
Not in a bad way - tortured forbidden love, danger in the form of a possible Royal betrayal/assassin, throw in some hot sex... Sprinkle some Daddy issues strewn throughout the various characters to up the angst quotient, and some timeless Royal watching intrigue, and good times can be had between the pages. It would also appear that the suspense factor will continue as a possible running theme beyond this book as well. That's fine - a touch of danger just adds more flavour. There is a HEA... but also a "to be continued" as well...
I wonder what will come out in Sasha's story - perhaps she looks so much like Ilaria for a good reason? There is a sneak peak at her story next, and am looking forward to it. There was something about the Earl of Bramwell that I liked and look forward to seeing his story flesh out too. Also, something is definitely up with the Queen and Dashiell. I presume that there will also be stories, with some hopeful HEAs for the bad-boy younger brother, and for the top Royal himself too.
To Protect a Princess is the first book in the new Regency Royals series by Jess Michaels. A new series by one of my all-time favorite writers of steamy historical fiction? Yes, please! However, I almost didn't get past the dedication page. Prince Harry and Meghan? Seriously? Can't stand them. But enough about that; I knew I was in for a treat reading this series so I dove right in...and I was not in the least disappointed. Steaminess abounds!
The Royal Family of Athawick, a small island nation, heads to London for a Season to celebrate the coronation of their new king. Princess Ilaria, the king's only sister, knows the real reason for the visit: she is to be married off to someone to strengthen the ties between their country and England. She is totally not on board with this. There's only one man who stirs her heart, and that is Captain Jonah Crawford, whom she met two years ago when he was part of the Royal Honor Guard when the Prince Regent visited Athawick. Jonah is not the sort of man her family wishes for her; he's not titled, and he's no longer in the Royal Navy, having had to resign his position to take responsibility for an estate that he doesn't want. Oh, and he was born on the wrong side of the blanket. They meet again in London, and their attraction is a strong as ever. When it becomes apparent Ilaria needs a bodyguard, Jonah volunteers. Will they forever be kept apart? Will they even survive the danger that is stalking Ilaria?
This was a fun and exciting start to a new series, with the abounding steaminess I mentioned earlier. I'm usually not thrilled with stories concerning made-up nations, but it worked well here and the premise was the perfect way to bring Ilaria and Jonah together. Individually they were great characters, but together they were even better! Ilaria was no demure, innocent wilting violet, not by a long shot. She had strong opinions and had no problems with speaking her mind or rebelling against her family. One of the places she went to defy her family was the Donville Masquerade, owned by Marcus Rivers, who appeared in previous books by Ms. Michaels. (Squeeee! I just adore Marcus!) Jonah was extremely protective of Ilaria and wanted her to be his, but he understood her duty and that there couldn't be a future for them together. Jonah missed his position as Captain in the Royal Navy; he also had issues from a rough childhood that still haunted him. He tried to resist her...really he did! But he wasn't particularly successful. Which led to deliciously carnal, uh, pairings between them. The supporting characters were very entertaining, especially dissolute brother Remi and body double and adopted sister Sasha. I am very excited to read about the other members of the Athawick Royal Family and their search for love; hope the next one is out soon!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own. (Actually 300+ reviews!)
Princess Ilaria of the small island nation of Athawick travels with her royal family to London for the season. Her family’s plan is to cement Athawick 's relationship with the Empire by marrying Princess Ilaria to a man of title and influence. But her heart belongs to Captain Jonah Crawford, who she met two years ago, when Captain Crawford was a part of the Royal Honor Guard that accompanied the Prince Regent on a visit to Athawick. In England, Princess Ilaria’s and Captain Jonah Crawford meet again, passion flares, but will they be thwarted by duty and an emerging dangerous threat?
Princess Ilaria is a feisty and strong woman, torn between rebelling and following her dream of a love match and following her duty to secure Athawick’s future. She plots to taste freedom before she submits to her marriage of duty. Captain Jonah Crawford knows a future with Princess Ilaria is not possible, but he will do whatever to allow her final taste of freedom and keep her safe.
To Protect a Princess the first book in the Regency Royals series, but readers of Jess Michaels previous books will recognize nods to characters and places from previous series.
For full disclosure, I usually avoid “princess stories, which I know doesn’t seem to make sense since I have no problem with Ladies, Viscounts, Earls, Marquesses, Duchesses, Dukes, but apparently research into historical romances say this is a “thing. The reason I wanted to read this title was because I have enjoyed many of Jess Michaels previous books and I am always interested in what she writes. I mention this because it may have influenced my view of the book.
I would honestly say this is not one of my favorite Jess Michaels novels. Perhaps because it is the first book of the series, there is some setting the scene and introduction of the characters so to speak, I felt things did not really get going until almost halfway through the novel. I found I did not feel invested in the leads until after this stage. Perhaps this due to my princess “thing? I found I was much more interested in the other characters in the book, whose stories will be told in the coming titles (see the coming titles list!). I am looking forward to reading them.
I still enjoyed the book and I feel Jess Michaels fans will also; the action really picks up in the second half where the action and steamy times occur

Many thanks to the Publisher, the Author and NetGalley for an advance copy in return for my honest review.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.
Princess Ilaria of Athawick has had quite a privileged life, but when her brother becomes king, and there is rebellion on the horizon, she has to travel to England, to form alliances, and find a husband. However, she can't stop thinking about the handsome naval Captain Jonah Crawford, whom she met two years ago during a trip by the Prince Regent, and meeting him again in London has fanned the flames between them. The attraction is there on both sides, but Jonah, though a war hero, and landowner, is not the suitable match her family are looking for. But as the rebellion comes closer to home, and Ilaria is put at risk, Jonah must step in as her bodyguard and the desire grows. Will they be able to cope with only have a few moments together, before going their separate ways, or will they be doomed to always love each other?
I've been loving Jess' books since I read my first of hers last year, and as soon as she announced this one on Twitter, I knew I would enjoy it. And boy, did I? I devoured the entire book on a rainy Saturday morning, and was fully engrossed in Ilaria and Jonah's story, as well as being intrigued by the lives of Ilaria's family too - who look as if they will have their own books in the series. Ilaria might be a princess, but she's not spoiled and she's seen what arranged marriages can do to the couple, and their children. However, she is willing to marry for the sake of her family, and thinks that having a few stolen moments with Jonah would be enough - until it's too late. I really liked the chemistry between the couple, and their shared history too - we really felt like the relationship was real, and the scenes with them in the countryside were perfect. Jonah may have a small estate, and a stellar reputation in the navy, but his family history has tainted him, and he doesn't want to hurt Ilaria in any way. They were really a fantastic couple, and the added intrigue of who was after Ilaria, and just what was brewing back home in Athawick is definitely setting the stage for the rest of the series. I have my theories, but I'm waiting until all five books are released to see!
I have been waiting for Jess Michaels to write a royalty book. Along with this being a book about royalty, which I love, I also love a good bodyguard story. Hunky hero protecting a princess? Yes!
Princess Ilaria is the only princess of Athawick who is touring with her family in London. She is to marry an Englishman to strengthen the island’s relationship with the British Empire. Captain Jonah Crawford met the princess a couple of years ago and now they meet again in the ballrooms of London. There is a threat against the princess and Captain Crawford has agreed to protect the princess as she explores a bit of freedom and passion before she marries.
I enjoyed meeting these characters and this book sets up the story, characters and conflict for the future books. The romance in this book was good but it took a while for me to be invested. The beginning was a bit slow and the romance needed more substance. Ilaria and Jonah have good chemistry but I felt they were exploring this attraction between them but I wanted more. More depth. More of a reason to be together besides the obvious attraction. It took until about half way for me to be onboard. The stakes were higher around this time, more conflict revealed and so there was more urgency to enjoy the time they could have together. It also took me a while for me to understand the characters a bit more. Jonah seemed kind of bland in the beginning and Ilaria was a bit foolish and naive. After a bit I liked them more individually and then together.
Any time the Donville Masquerade is mentioned or visited I’m so excited. I love seeing Marcus and Annabelle again (). I also love the small mentions and cameos of characters from other books which is always so much fun.
I’m actually more interested in the other characters books. Maybe since this first book sets up the characters and future books, I will be able to sink into the stories faster. I can’t wait for Sasha’s story!

I love the idea of this book and this new series. I’m starting to really love this author. Her writing is really good. All of Society is atwitter about the arrival of the Royal Family of Athawick, a small island country with important ties on a tour to celebrate the coronation of a new king. Or at least…that is the reason on the surface for their Season in London. Princess Ilaria knows the real truth: her family wishes to marry her off to a man of title and influence, in order to strengthen their own “special relationship with the British Empire. As they continue to encounter each other, their desire grows, but so is the danger lurking around every corner. And when Ilaria requires a bodyguard, Jonah volunteers. Will burning passion turn to love? And will love be enough to save them when the worst comes to pass? Jonah was, by far, my favorite character. He is brave and smart, but also sweet and passionate. You can see from the start the way he can´t keep his mind, and his hands, away from Ilaria. I have to confess that I did have some issues with her. In some passages of the book she seemed almost bratty, but she is a royal princess, so maybe that’s expected? Together this can light up an entire city…that chemistry! So good! The sexy times were amazing, but also this aghast dance they have to endure because of their impossible future. I loved the secondary character and I’ll be waiting restless for the rest of the books. The end felt a bit rushed, thought. To know that Sasha and her earl are going to have their own story was an amazing surprise. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This first novel in a new series by Jess Michaels is fun and surprisingly moving. Princess Ilaria and her family have left their island home of Athawick to spend time in England. The hope is to arrange a strategic marriage for Ilaria and stave off colonization. The only flaw is that the king (her brother) and queen (their mother) neglected to let Ilaria know about it
Captain Jonah Crawford (a ginger!) first met Ilaria a couple of years ago in Athawick when he accompanied the Prince Regent on a diplomatic trip. Through a few flashback chapters (a little awkward in the flow, in my opinion) we learn that Jonah and Ilaria liked each other from the get go; only her father's cold interruption stopped them from kissing. There's a new king though, and he convinces Jonah to keep an eye on Ilaria for her protection.
Apparently, that protection includes trailing her to a sex club (from a previous series by this author, I gather). Several times. I'm not a huge fan of the sex-club-run-by-a-decent-and-happily-married-man trope, but I tried not to let it color my opinion of this particular story.
Anyway, someone tries to kill her presumably as part of a rebel plot to overthrow the monarchy, so she and Jonah head off to hide in the country. Sexy times ensue, but as she's a princess and he's a bastard commoner, there's no hope for the future.
The conundrum is ultimately solved, but the rebel plot isn't; clearly it will thread through the other books in this series and probably won't resolve into King Grantham gets his book someday. I liked what I read enough to look forward to the next book in the series.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!
I received an ARC from the publisher and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
To Protect a Princess is the first of what seems like an exciting new series from Jess Michaels. I love political intrigue, and the way Michaels interweaves the interplay between the British and the royals from the fictional island nation of Athawick is well-done, in addition to foreshadowing how each of the Athawick royals are impacted by this new alliance.
Both Ilaria and Jonah are compelling characters, and their physical/sexual attraction was definitely palpable, as were the stakes around them, like her having to marry well for the sake of maintaining new alliances, and him merely being a member of her Royal Guard. But while the “spark is there, I needed more to fully invest myself in them as a couple on the emotional front.
This book also felt like it was doing a lot of setup, which seemed at cross purposes with it also being fairly short. The relationship development overall suffered in the name of the world building of this new nation and their political alliance with Britain, so perhaps a longer book that allowed both to be fleshed out equally would have worked better.
I liked this one well enough, but this wasn’t my favorite book I’ve read by Jess Michaels. It is, however, an indicator that the series could be more fun as it goes along. And if you happen to like historical romance with political intrigue, and don’t mind/prefer a romance that develops through physical and sexual intimacy, you’ll enjoy this one more than I did.
The start to a great series surrounding the Royal Family of Athawick, a small island country facing uncertainty with its neighbouring proximity with England. When Princess Ilaria is informed of the real reason why her family is visiting and that is to be married off to a man of title and influence, she is incensed. When Ilaria sees Captain Jonah Crawford again, she finds herself again, fighting her attraction to him, knowing that he does not fit any of the criteria required in a husband by her family. When Jonah visited Athawick two years ago, as part of the Royal Honor Guard, he too was captivated by her beauty. However, when Ilaria’s life is threatened, Jonah volunteers to be her bodyguard, knowing that they must fight their attraction, in order to do what has been asked of them by their king. The chemistry between the couple is intense and their story, one that from the start, does not hide their attraction to each other. Jonah is a strong, resilient, and honourable man who does all that he can to protect Ilaria, whilst understanding the almost insurmountable odds of their relationship becoming real. Likewise, Ilaria was a strong-willed character who was not afraid to go after what she wanted, whilst understanding her responsibility to the crown. I look forward to reading more about this interesting family in books to come. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Jess Michaels is definitely one of my favourite authors; she writes wonderful steamy novels that explore the feelings of the characters and make them feel very alive. And with this book she’s really outdone herself! This is the first book of a new series, Regency Royals, and in my opinion this series has got a lot of potential. The main characters of this book are Princess Ilaria and Captain Jonah Crawford, the man assigned to protect her. Ilaria and Jonah met two years before and their attraction was undeniable. But when they meet again, that attraction becomes something more and they cannot deny what they feel about each other any longer. I loved Ilaria and Jonah: they are really a wonderful couple. Their love is passionate, very deep, intense. And for once the heroine isn’t a shy young virgin, but a woman who knows what she wants and defies convention to obtain it. And Jonah loves her so much that he’s willing to help her, but also to give his life to protect her. Because there’s a bit of mystery in the story as well, and Jonah will be a perfect and dashing bodyguard... As for the side characters, who will have a book each in the series, they are already well defined, lovable and intriguing and I look forward to see how their stories will develop in the following books. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
To Protect a Princess is the first book in the Regency Royals series. Set in 1817, all of Society is atwitter about the arrival of the Royal Family of Athawick, a small island country along the trade routes of the North Sea. This story has travel, mystery, and passion.
Captain Jonah Crawford was part of the Royal Honor Guard that visited Athawick in 1815. It was then he first laid eyes on the Princess. Two years later, she shows up in the glittering Balls of London.
Princess Ilara, youngest sibling and only sister of the king, is accompanying her family on a tour of London, to celebrate the coronation of her brother, the new King. Her family will attend months of Balls and special events to solidify their ties to Britain, and marry her off to a man of title and influence. Princess Ilara is not happy with this plan, but it is her duty.
Jonah and Ilara’s relationship benefits from a previous flirtation two years previous to London, which teases the storyline into a forbidden love story. Luckily, they get to spend plenty of time together, due to her rebellious streak and his protective prowess, which propels their relationship into quiet confidences and sexy times.
The secondary characters are quite solid and intriguing, especially the dissolute brother of the king, Remi, and the body double faux sister, Sasha.
I recommend this book. A steady start to a new series.
