There was no way for them to be together in the past. Now that Lincoln's retired and the world football is more accepting, can he convince Nixon to give them a chance?

Nixon Cross isn’t wired to share his life with anyone. He’d considered a relationship once, but after the one man patient enough to put up with all his quirks shut him down, he committed all of his energy to football and helping his players. Now, one of his players need more help than Nixon can provide and his former flame is the one man who will know what to do.

Retired NAFL player Lincoln Sims had no choice but to stay in the closet; he was a professional athlete at a time when it was impossible to be honest about his sexuality. After retiring, he confessed his secret to his wife and son because he was tired of living a lie. Now, he’s ready to live his life.

Nixon Cross is the man he left behind but could never forget.

Can these men find a way to recover from their false start years earlier?

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

When I started reading this book I wasn't prepared for such an emotional story. I'm not talking about romantic stuff here. I'm talking about the harsh reality that some retired players have to face as a result of all the brutal hits they took while on the field. The possibility that some of the injuries they suffered years ago can come back and hunt them long after they occured and were percieved as healed.

Even though it wasn't one of the MCs that suffered from his time on the field, it was still a very big part of the story and it set the mood for the book. The romance between Nixon and Lincoln took a back seat and the second half of the story focused on how a retired player and the people closest to him coped with the effects multiple and poorly treated concussions had on him.

The MCs spent a lot of page time away from each other as the story takes place in two different states but that didn't make their connection feel less real. The opposite actually happened, them being apart from each other (it was only for a few days at a time, but those where the days we mainly got to see) and still supporting each other as best they could even from two states away strengthened their relationship and showed how comminted they were in building a future together. They had their issues that they needed to work through but being friends first, even if they had grown apart in recent years, meant that they knew each other very well and they already had feelings for each other. They were grown men who knew what they wanted and worked together to get it. At first they found themselves in a bit of a stalemate because, even though they wanted to be together, each wanted different things from their relationship but eventually they managed to work through that.

Nixon was a very private person, to the point that he didn't have a private life because he didn't want anyone to find out anything personal about him. Lincoln, on the other hand, wanted a relationship where he would be able to be open about who he was with. This was their biggest issue in getting together but eventually they found some middle ground and got past that.

I was glad that there was no relationship drama. These men are in their forties and they are capable of communicating their needs and fears. From the moment they decided they wanted to be together, they put everything they had in their relationship and in trying to make it work. They compromised, they talked, they changed. They helped each other smooth the faults of their characters and together they became better and happier.

I won't say much about the difficult issue that this book is dealing with because I don't want to spoil anything. The player that we see dealing with past injuries is Linc's best friend, Patrick, and it's heartbreaking to see how he's being affected by the hits he took in his playing days.

The second half was very emotional but, even though I wasn't prepared for something like that when I started reading it, I still couldn't put the book down until I was done with it. The way Sloan Johnson wrote about such a hard situation made me feel as if I was there watching those guys suffer along a loved one. We saw the ways Patrick had changed since his diagnosis, the things his wife and son were going through daily, the most hidden fears and thoughts everyone involved had, the way Patrick tried to take care of his family and lessen their burden as best he could and everything was setting a somber tone in a story that was supposed to be a romance but managed to be so much more.

"False Start" is the second book in the "Wilmington Breakers" series but it can be read as a standalone. One of characters of the first book does appear here and the situation he's in kind of steals the spotlight in the first few chapters but it was still easy to follow what was happening even without having read the first book.

Loved Lincoln and Nixon!! This was a fantastic second chance story with in the Tackled by Love series!! I loved that the author gave us a mature couple, both in their mid-40’s. They both were sweet, strong and sexy but have obstacles to get past. Overall, a fantastic read. The story was well written, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

DNF @25%. (No rating.)

It’s very rare for me not to finish a book I’d planned to review, but I’m throwing in the towel on this one because I’m pushed for time right now and don’t have it in me to continue with something that’s started so poorly. The characters are bland and so far, acting and thinking like they’re barely past puberty rather than men in their forties, I don’t feel any chemistry between them and the writing is simplistic and stilted.

But what really tripped my bullshit-o-meter was this: the premise for this second-chance romance between a former football star Lincoln - and a coach/trainer Nixon - is that one of the players on the team Nixon works with Zach - is about to be outed as gay in a fly-on-the-wall documentary being filmed about training camp. For one, thing I can’t imagine a big-name sports organisation allowing a film crew in without lots of complicated legal protections and NDAs. For another, the team coach, who is concerned about Zach’s state of mind, asks Nixon to get in touch with Lincoln who has recently come out as gay - to see if he can help Zach, talk to him about what’s going on in his life and what’s about to happen, and generally talk him down - which is the thing that brings them together after not seeing each other for several years. Then, at a team party/barbecue, the coach pulls Nixon, Lincoln and a couple of the other staff aside and explains what’s going on AND OUTS ZACH TO THEM WITHOUT ZACH’S KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT. WTAF?

I read and re-read this section to double-check I’d understood correctly, but it’s clear that at least one of the other people involved in this conversation had no idea Zach was gay.

Not on, author.

That really soured me on the whole thing, tbh. I kept going a bit longer in the hope that there would be something to allow me to get past that and engage me, but see above. Bland characters, poor writing, no emotional connection.

So I’m out.

Superb follow up for this new spin off series from Sloan Johnson.

I've said before how much I enjoy a good sports romance. While the real world seems to sadly lag behind when it comes to top level athletes and sportsmen being able to be out safely and successfully, these novels provide the joy and the hope things might reach that state eventually.

This was both a later life and a sort of second chance romance, two of my favourite tropes, both men coming with plenty of baggage and fears about being vulnerable.

I loved both Nix and Linc, they were uniquely drawn characters with their own distinct voice. The steam level is on the lower scale but when they do get together it's beautifully passionate. It's also mostly low angst too, these guys talk it out, albeit with some reluctance.

There's a moment of sadness too but it's not drama lama-ing for the sake of plot. Now I'm hoping that Sloan has set us up with Blake and mystery man John for book three.

Oh, truly gorgeous cover too.

False Start is the second book in the Wilmington Breakers series but it can be read as a standalone. If you read Down by Contact then you have met Nixon and Lincoln. I knew they had some kind of past but I had no idea how deep it truly went.

Nixon and Lincoln met each other when Linc played in the NAFL while Nixon was the team strength and conditioning coach. They became the best of friends during that time and even after they both left the Birmingham Bengals. But, a few years ago their friendship changed. Now, they only speak on holidays and birthdays. That was until Nixon needed to ask Lincoln a favor. Of course Lincoln would say yes. He would always be there for Nixon even if the man had been avoiding him over the last three years. This one favor could be the push they needed to talk about what happened or didn't happen between them in the past.

Nixon and Lincoln are both in their mid-forties now. They once felt something between them but it wasn't their time. Lincoln want ready even after retiring and getting a divorce. He had his reasons but Nix was hurt and couldn't handle it. Couldn't just go back to be best friends with the one man he wanted to have a real relationship with so he avoided. Now, that they are in the same room, does that mean they are in the same place? Nixon is a private person. Used to being on his own. Is he ready to let people know his personal business? He never hid his sexuality but he didn't shout it to the world either. And even though Lincoln's ex and son knew he is gay, was he ready for everyone else to know? Even if they didn't care who knew they were gay, did they want to finish what they started years before?

I loved this story! These men are strong, sexy, and beautiful. I also loved that they are in their forties. They are older, wiser, and know what they want. Maybe. Sometimes. It's complicated. Nix is afraid Linc will leave again. Linc is scared that Nix will avoid again. They live in different states. Lincoln has his son to think about. They have their obstacles but what they have is worth it. They both just need to believe that this time around is going to work. Can they get their shit together before it all falls apart?

Overall...it's a second chance at a first time. I felt invested in this couple. I cheered for them. I thought it was awesome that they brought out each other's other sides. It was more emotional then I thought it would be and I loved that. So yes, I cried. I also laughed and felt hot all over. I can't wait for the next book. Oh man...I have a feeling its going to be even better. And that's says a lot.

Quotes:

“You should know, no matter how busy life gets, I’ve always had time for you.

“Do you think I’m looking for someone to march in parades with me?

“I love the way you fall apart for me, Linc whispered.

ARC received from author for an honest review

We met Nixon and Lincoln in the first book in the Wilmington Breakers series, Down By Contact, and there was something between them that we just needed to know.

And what a story theirs is. I love a friends-to-lovers story, love it even more when there is a bit of history behind them.

Linc and Nix's story is beautiful. It is heart breaking. It is thought provoking. There are subject in this story that made me stop and think, and I am sure it will for other readers too.

Family is a big, big part of this story. Family is not just blood, it is those you surround yourself with, those who love you for who you are.

I adored Linc's relationship with Blake. It could have come across as cheese or after-school-specially, but it didn't. It felt real, organic, nothing was glossed over to make the perfect father/son relationship. We saw it , warts and all.

What I mostly liked about this story was that they didn't give up. Hurdle after hurdle was thrown in front of them and they stuck at it.

I am glad Ms Johnson gave us Linc and Nix's story. That it is about and older couple that have extra baggage to deal with (since I am getting to be an old fart myself!)

Thank you for the beautiful stories, and here's to many more.

The second book in this series is grittier and more mature than the first - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a second chance love story between two men in their forties. Lincoln is a retired American football star and Nixon is a professional trainer we met in the first book. Twenty years earlier, football was a much more hostile environment for gay athletes and staff and Nixon and Lincoln were never free to follow their hearts. Now, with a very different social climate and LIncoln’s son about to leave home, Nixon and Lincoln have a chance to make things right between them.

This is a darker, grittier read than most of Sloan Johnson’s sports romances. As a retired player, Lincoln watches his friends and former teammates struggle with the long term consequences of repetitive head injuries. He deals with the toll his career has taken on his own body, mind and relationships. The glamour and excitement of a professional sports career is long gone but he is constantly reminded of the consequences.

I really loved these two men. They are older than the author’s usual heroes but their life experiences have made them refreshingly human. The chemistry between these two is hot but this feels more relational and less sexual than other stories in the series. I love the reflective moments these two experience and I really enjoyed both of their complicated histories. Beyond the two characters are some interesting insights into the experiences of LGBT people in sport over the past twenty years.

This story doesn’t have as much sport in it as I’ve come to expect from this author. It makes sense because neither Lincoln or Nixon is a player. The sports focus is more on the challenges and consequences of a career in a professional contact sport rather than on a specific team or player’s progress over a season. With Lincoln reflecting on his career and his son about to enter the draft, I really enjoyed the more thoughtful elements of this story.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the second on the series - and I would recommend that you start at the beginning to get the full story. That said this centres around a new pairing, but in a familiar setting.

The blurb gives you some context as to these two men who have been important in each others' lives for a long time as friends, but never prepared to be open about their sexuality. The story of how they are at their current point in life, and how external influences have stopped them from acting on a strong love for each other is very moving. For too long Nixon in particular has been hiding all his personal life, and devoting himself to work, as though that will have to be enough.

Patrick's story made me cry, and is a brilliant way of reminding us all about what is important and who's feelings we should consider first above all else. Blake, Lincoln's son, was another side character who clearly has a lot on his plate, and given the ending maybe we will get to learn more in a future installment.

I am a huge sports romance fan, and I like it when it is not all about a player, but also about support staff and families. This is a really well rounded, thoughtful and sexy read, Thank you Ms Johnson!

This is the second book in the series, while you can read it is as a stand alone, you would get more out of it if you read the first book.

False Start deals with not only the relationship between Linc and Nix it also deals with a very real subject matter in today's world, the reality of what happens in football when you take too many hits to the head.

Linc and Nix have danced around their feelings for each other for years and it's finally time for them to address them and see where things go. While I could feel the connection between them there were times that I couldn't and I felt disconnected for some reason. There was a lot of strong emotions in this book and I will admit I shed a few tears. I loved how Nix finally came out of his shell, not all the way but way more than Linc or anyone else expected. I hope we get to see more of this sweet couple in future books in the series. I also hope we see what happens with Linc's son Blake and his friend John.

Nixon is the definition of complicated. He’s been stuck in his way for so long. But Linc isn’t wait any longer for the man he loves. Their love story is a bit complicated but also pretty sweet. Two men have waited years for each other and they finally get their happy ending who wouldn’t love this book?!

False Start is the second book in the Wilmington Breakers series. It can be read as a standalone without issue.

I am without a doubt a huge Sloan Johnson fan. I love her m/m like no other. This story while entertaining hit on the topic of CTE specifically with football players and the effects it can have not only to the person suffering with it but those that love them. It was such an emotional raw look at those it impacts.

Nixon and Linc have known each other for years but something always stood in the way of them getting together. When Nixon is all but forced to contact Lincoln to help with the Zach situation he doesn't know how to deal with all the feelings that one conversation bring up. Can Linc make Nixon see he doesn't have to hide his true self? Will Nixon let his guard down enough to not pass up on love a second time?

I have to say of everything I've read of Ms. Johnson's this is my favorite. It had me in tears but it's also sexy and sweet. Everything you want in read, at least for me it was. I couldn't put it down, even waking up early on my day off just to finish it! It is so worth the emotional ride to get to the ending. I hope Blake's story is coming soon. I am dying to see what is next!!

*Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie by the author for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion, a review was not a requirement.*

False Start is Book 2 in Sloan Johnson's Wilmington Breakers series, a spin-off of her Homeruns series. I truly think you should read Down by Contact, Book 1 of this series, to truly enjoy it. The two books overlap in parts and I think it would make it more enjoyable if you know both sides of what's going on. And really, reading a Sloan Johnson book is no hardship!

Nixon is the team trainer for the Wilmington Breakers and was introduced in Down by Contact. He's tough and doesn't seem to need anyone in his life. He was raised that your personal life is personal and that any type of affection shouldn't be shown outside of the bedroom. Combine the way he was raised with working in professional sports, and it's understandable why Nixon remains in the closet at his age. There was only one person he's ever wanted a relationship with, his best friend Lincoln. Lincoln is a retired professional football player, who has been asked to speak to the Wilmington Breakers. Lincoln's life has been about football, and nothing has changed now that he's retired. Once Lincoln and Nixon are together again, their attraction to each other is undeniable, but are they ready to have the relationship they've both longed for?

I really liked Lincoln and Nixon! Nixon was a tough trainer on the team that always expected each player to give it their all, but he also had a hidden nurturing part of him. I didn't like that Nixon allowed the way he was raised regarding affection to control his life. It was something that he didn't like about the way he was raised, and instead of changing it, he did the same thing. Lincoln was a great father, friend, and even ex-husband. He was protective of both his son, his friends, and even the football players. Both characters are just really likable!

I enjoy books with older main characters, typically because they seem more settled in their lives. While Nixon and Lincoln are not fighting themselves about being gay, they're still struggling with accepting the rest of the world knowing it. And, I thought the story showed the difference of emotions and experiences between an "older" generation and younger generation regarding being out in the professional world. Even though it's more acceptable in today's world, the older men still struggle with accepting that they can be themselves. Plus, in Lincoln's case, he had an adult son who was a little bit of a jerk about Lincoln being gay and dating Nixon.

This is a great friends to lovers, second chance story but you're not going to get an easy HEA without a little angst in this book! There is another storyline with Lincoln and one of his best friends that was so sad, so don't be surprised if you find yourself crying during it! And, I'm pretty sure I know where the next book is going based on the epilogue of this book, and if so, I will be annoyed by the hypocrisy of that character's behavior in this book!

Rating: 5 stars!!

We first met Lincoln Sims and Nixon Cross in the first book in the Wilmington Breakers series, Down By Contact. It was clear there was something between them, but it was also clear that their history was anything but easy.

Nixon has always been that guy that feels like he's better off alone. He doesn't do relationships well and so instead of failing at them, he just steers away from them. There is one man that has always had his heart, but the timing was just not right. When Nix finds out that one of his star players needs direction that he, nor anyone else on the Wilmington Breakers staff can give him, he turns to the one man he's always wanted for himself, Lincoln.

Linc is still trying to come to terms with his new reality. He was a man that was married with a child, but also a huge secret - he was gay. When he finally retired, he decided that it was high time he stop living a lie, so he told those closest to him and started on a new path. Now a motivational speaker, he has a gig speaking to the Wilmington Breakers which is going to bring him face to face with the man he's never been able to forget.

When Linc and Nix reconnect, it's clear that the sparks and chemistry are still there. Will Nix be able to get over his hang-ups and will complications both with Linc's son and a former teammate cause the relationship to flounder before it really gets off the ground?

What I loved about this book, outside of the crazy chemistry between Linc and Nix, is the realness of it. There are countless people going through things like these two every day and it was nice to see how they managed the situation while keeping the feelings of both themselves and everyone else in mind. They didn't rush it and they respected one another when it was most important. Kudos to Sloan Johnson for putting a book out there that is real and makes you root for people that just want to be their authentic selves and live the life that they wish to live.

The “Wilmington Breakers series are my first ’s books. While the story centers on fictional characters in American Footballs club - and I know next to nothing about it - I have no difficulties following the plot as the sport mainly serves as background and there’s not much technicalities of the game involved.

“ is a NA second chance story that reunite a rising star footballer and his first love. “ presents more mature couple in the-one-who-got-away blended with friends to lovers trope. The books have overlapping scenes or time, that it’ll really help to read them chronologically.

The common theme in both books are the character’s coming out as viewed from different perspectives. Zach in the first book is an active footballer, a rising star of Wilmington Breakers; while Lincoln in the second book is a former footballer and his love interest is one of the Breakers staff coach. Both books tells the story in dual POVs that readers get to glimpse the characters feelings, regrets, thoughts and determinations that in time carry them through uncertain and murky times.

Personally it’s easier for me to relate to Lincoln and Nixon in “. This might be due to similar age range that get me understanding them more, how harder it is to alter decades way of living - or thinking - while juggling other responsibilities as new couple living in different states. The added presence (and complications) of their family and friends - combined with the need of privacy on Nixon’s part - made this entry the more emotional spin of the two.

That isn’t to say I don’t like Zach and Griffin in “. These young men are likable enough, resolute even when stumble over some hiccups. However, I do feel their decision to start over is a tad on the rushed side. On the flip side, the way Zach is forced to read the whole situation and compare them to his twin brother’s situation intrigued me to track down and read ’s previous sport series, “Home Run! Besides, as miffed as I am with the rather fast reconciliation between these two, I love strong characters who fight for what they want more.

In sex department, I’ll say this is a pretty mild MM romance. There are some steamy scenes, but not in the frequency that I deem too much. I’m happy to say that these two couples are quite versatile in their role. ;-)

Overall, this series is a nice introduction to the author’s work. I’ll be hunting to read next and - who knows - I might binge read the rest of her books next.

I love a good friends to lovers story, besides second chances it's one of my favorite tropes. This was an enjoyable read, but it was also frustrating to read at times. While I love Sloan's writing, It's frustrating that the majority of her books are centered around sports, so most of her characters have to fight their way out of the closet. I was looking forward to reading Lincoln and Nixon's story, especially since they are older and I thought maybe that closet door would have been blasted off the hinges by now, but while neither is in the closet per se, they aren't exactly out of it, either.

This was an angsty read that had my stomach in knots throughout most of the story. It wasn't just the main characters. There were so many conflicts, so many obstacles working against Nix and Linc and it was extremely hard to feel confident that they'd make it. I found the secondary storylines dealing with Zach, Blake and Patrick to be interesting, but I felt they took the story in too many directions and took up too much page time. All these side stories took away from the main characters' story. I wish the focus had remained on Nix and Linc.

Nix and Linc had amazing chemistry. They worked well together and I loved seeing them become not just partners, but along with Linc's son, Blake, they managed to became a family.

This was a well-written story of a second chance at love. Although they were never together when they were younger, these two men have harbored feelings for each other for years. The story is filled with angst, heartbreak, family, friendship and love. Recommendable!

"False Start" is the second book of the Tackled by Love series by Quinn Ward. Lincoln and Nixon (the presidential ring to the names intentional?) are the MCs in this one. We have already been introduced to both in the previous book: Nix is the strict coach in charge of conditioning and strength training at the Breakers' home, and Linc is the retired player making a career out of sharing his experience about balance in a player's life. Though the attraction has been there for a while, they never acted on it - bad timing and priorities getting in the way. For Nix, it was the need to keep their possible involvement on the hush, as he is afraid to be outed. For Linc, it was his marriage, then his son. As the book moves forward, the past dynamic between them has reversed: Nix pushed first for a relationship but got hurt by Linc's rejection. Now, is Linc the one going for it. Amidst all this, we also have a dramatic subplot in one of the supporter characters - trigger warning here for long-lasting diseases and depression issues.

The book repeats the receipt of the previous book: past romantic stories that push for a resolution in the present. However, the characters look more solid and mature this time around, more appealing and relatable than Zach and Griffin in "Down by Contact". The story also advances more efficiently, with subplots adding complexity to the main story - Patrick's and Hunter's. Overall, a better book than the first, but not brilliant either. Again, I found slightly tyring the back and forth at some points. Point in case is Nix deciding whether he should fly to stay with Linc when the Patrick situation breaks.

Next book in the series explores Hunter's story - who, incidentally, has had a hard time with his father being gay.

I’m loving this new series, Wilmington Breakers, by one of my favorite authors, Sloan Johnson. I especially loved False Start for two reasons. It's a friends to lovers romance with a little second chance in there, and they are over forty. Thank the Lord! We met Nixon and Lincoln in the first book and I just knew there was a good story to be told! Nixon is cranky, set it his ways and very good at his job. He's committed to the team and doesn't have a life outside of work. Lincoln is a retired player who shocked his wife and son by coming out of the closet. Nixon and Lincoln were best friends a long time ago. Nixon thought once Lincoln confessed his sexuality they might get a chance to be more than friends. But, that didn't happen and their friendship was never the same. Nixon needs a favor and Lincoln would do anything for him. Maybe this is his chance to right that wrong and finally have the life he wants. The man he wants. Can Nixon and Lincoln make it work this time around? Can they let the past go and trust their feelings and have a future? I loved this story! There's so much more than just a romance and football. There are real issues and tough situations to overcome. I think they are one of my favorite Sloan couples. They are mature, have lived and know what they want. They might be stubborn and leery about taking the step, but that's what makes it worth it. Again, I loved that they are in the forties. I need to have more older men in my romances, please people!

A False Start takes place alongside book one of the series, Down By Contact, but focuses on a different couple. Nixon and Lincoln have a second chance at something they both yearned for a few years ago but circumstances always seemed to be against them. Now they have the chance at restarting their friendship that became strained and distant and turning it into a romance that they both want and deserve.
Nixon is very private about his personal life, even if he doesn't really have one, but reconnecting with Lincoln stirs feelings up that he tried to shut away. Lincoln is now in a place in his life where he feels free to be his true self and go after a relationship that is fulfilling and he's wanted for years. Zach is the young man being exposed to the media but Nixon and Lincoln's relationship developments are not without their drama as they learn how to be together on a different level, out in the open and with some who may not understand or agree.
This is an enjoyable second chance romance that comes with a bit of angst as the two men get over their feelings from years ago and deal with their present and future. They also have to deal with Hunter, Lincoln's son, who is still coming to terms with his father being gay after being married to be his mum for most of his life. It's good reading Nixon especially opening himself up to the possibilities and emotions that Lincoln brings out in him. I am so happy to have their story after it being teased in book one and now I'm looking forward to book three which I'm hoping gives us more of Hunter.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I absolutely loved everything about this addition to the series. The writers knowledge of behind the scenes football with recruiting (undercover of course), the struggles of relationships within a season, and their overall knowledge again with the logistics, completely mesmerized me as it’s not often these are included in sports romance. The seriousness regarding the aftermath of concussions was another refreshing change, as this is rarely included within a sports romance but is a serious subject matter. And, it was nice to finally see the strategies needed of the strength and conditioning coach! (Yes, I’m a major details fan of football)

It was so nice to finally read the story of Lincoln and Nixon’s romance. Their connection was evident from the first book, with more clarification and an in-depth look into the events that transpired between the two. Their chemistry was absolutely perfect, regardless of the outside circumstances they were forced to endure, but sticking by each other throughout all the pain and suffering of those around them.

All in all, excellent second book to an awesome series. It’s actually refreshing to read a different take, besides your stereotypical sports romance book. The behind the scenes is just as important as actual game time, and that’s just what this authors has accomplished!

False Start is the second book in Quinn Ward's Tackled By Love series. This part of the series takes overlaps with the first book's timeline, with it perfectly following book one.

In Down By Contact, we met Nix and Linc. Now we get their story, which I simply love.

Their journey is one of second chances between two men in their forties. Being together now makes them face their pasts and all the pain and fears it involves.

They fell in love years ago, but were victims of the times, never able to be out and proud together.

This story also has a very serious side to it, as a secondary character is dealing with the side effects of repeated head injuries during his football career. It's a tough thing to read and definitely has a major impact on the other characters. I appreciate the author tackling such a serious issue in a way that explores how it effects the injured person as well as those around them.

I love this book. And I love this series. Quinn Ward is fabulous at writing sports romances. Each of Quinn's sports books holds a spot close to my heart, with the characters who have come to feel like family.

False Start is a great addition to this series. Quinn Ward once again impresses with this look into the locker room and support staff.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

I enjoy a friends to lovers story in general and when the friends happen to also be characters from a book I’ve already read and enjoyed, it makes the story even better. Linc and Nix captured my attention in Down by Contact, the first book in the Wilmington Breakers series and I was so, so excited to know that this book was going to be all about them.

I think at the heart of this story is family - and not always family by blood, but family by team and life experiences. I enjoyed watching Linc try to do the best for his son and Nix coming to accept that he mattered to people as more than a trainer. One of the best quotes in the book is one that I think we could all remember daily and something that Lincoln said to his son:

“There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world. If you constantly live in fear of what could go wrong, you’ll never truly live.

Thank goodness these guys didn’t live in fear and thank goodness the author gave us such a great story to enjoy. I can't wait for more from Wilmington or anywhere else that Ms. Johnson wants to take us.

This is a friends-to-lovers, second chance romance with a lot of history. Both Nixon and Lincoln are strong-willed, determined people who don’t quite know what to do with the chance they finally have, after years of friendship and one false start (see the title) to be together. That they care for each other is clear, but they have plenty of obstacles, some self-inflicted, to work through along the way. I liked how deep and real their feelings for each other clearly are, although it took a while for the book to show, rather than just *tell* readers that in the early chapters I had a hard time figuring out why there was so much angst, since angst was all there was, but when that eased a bit it was easier to see the strong attraction and rich history that connects them. Their story doesn’t unfold in a vacuum, either: there’s a strong cast of supporting characters whose lives are equally complicated and those complications are part of Lincoln and Nixon’s journey as well. Overall, this is an easy book to get caught up in.

This book was so incredibly emotional and I was not prepared for all these emotions. It was not only emotional in the romance side of things but also the other side where you see all the harsh realities of being a retired football player. We get to see the side that we don’t usually get to see. The explanations of the injuries some player go through and all the side effects. It’s hard to read about that and read about the trauma that players go through. Nixon and Lincoln had an incredible connection that they were able to nurture and grow even though they were in separate states. Their love was so real and you could see that through the incredible words and the amazing story. I felt their connection while reading and I absolutely fell for these two! This was truly a beautiful story!

I'm a sucker for gay sports romance. Add in older characters and second chances and you have me hooked. Lincoln and Nixon's story is about a retired pro-football player and his longtime friend and trainer who, despite having feelings for each other, have never taken the chance to see if they could be more. Lincoln finally takes that chance. No longer married he is free to explore his sexuality and he discovers that he doesn't want to give up without at least trying. Nixon while never denying his sexuality, grew up in a household where his parents did not show affection and he himself remains guarded when it comes to expressing his feelings. Lincoln understands this and is willing to take his time with Nixon,. They keep their relationship private, and together they forge a path to discovery that sometimes the biggest reward comes when you take that final step towards being more open about who you love.

Quite simply--a dang great read! What I thought might be a fluffy romance storyline turned out to be a powerful emotional story with a wallop that brought tears to my eyes. So many characters dealing with some many issues. Primary were Lincoln and Nixon, once in a relationship that had ended, when Lincoln could not accept who he was. Circumstances bring the two back together as they deal with issues and help others deal with similar issues. I loved that the characters are older gay characters (do not see that often), and they were depicted so realistically. I related to both as each one's situation mirrored my own life at some point. It was heartwarming to see this couple find happiness after a long conflicted world, one in which historically others were put first, but they finally put themselves first and find the love they were seeking. i did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

Nixon Cross and Lincoln Sims are best friends that have a long history. Their friendship runs so much deeper and due to their secret they must part ways or so Nixon thought.

As always fate has a way of opening old wounds and for Nix, Linc is his, and it was not strange when they must cross paths. Nix and Linc will take you to a story with sorrow, regrets and lots of love.

Again and again Sloan Johnson managed to suck you into the story without leaving you room to breath. The emotions this two characters have will leave you raw and experienced it too. For me this is another great story by this incredible author.

If you love M/M romance then this is the book for you and don't forget to read book one of this series, you will love it as much as this book.

Ms. Ward, I fell in love with Nixon and Lincoln! Their story is so beautiful. The level of angst is just right for me.

Nixon is stubborn and set in his ways, but when he gave in to something that he has wanted for years, he couldn't get enough and maybe, maybe this time, he is courageous enough to go after who he has wanted for so long.

Lincoln is now free to live his life to the fullest. And he has wanted Nixon for so long. Maybe this time they will get their happily ever after.

Nixon and Lincoln are perfect for each other. Their story is as real as it gets. The uncertainties and the challenges that they face on a daily basis are real and so heartfelt. I love them. Ms. Ward was able to create these two amazing but imperfect characters that they just fit!

Congratulations Ms. Ward/Ms. Johnson!

Can unrequited love last over 20 years?

Lincoln a retired footballer, divorced with one child in college desperate to follow his Father's foot steps. Nixon has had feelings for Lincoln that he's denied over Twenty years. Lots of guilt, shame,an just plain being afraid has kept these two apart. AFTER all this time can Nix and Linc build a bridge to combine their separate worlds? Can true love stand the test if time an separation? Can these two men put their fears away an step into their futures? This book is a riveting tale of how friends can turn to lovers even after a long separation .
After a lifetime of separate lives can they truly forge a Forever? It is a tear jerker . It's a must read!!!.
