A Hunger of Thorns #2

Deep Is the Fen

Rate this book
Merry doesn’t need a happily-ever-after. Her life in the charming, idyllic town of Candlecott is fine just as it is. Simple, happy, and with absolutely no magic. Magic only ever leads to trouble.

But Merry’s best friend, Teddy, is joining the Toadmen—a secret society who specialize in backward thinking and suspiciously supernatural traditions—and Merry is determined to stop him. Even if it means teaming up with the person she hates most: her academic archnemesis, Caraway Boswell, an ice-cold snob who hides his true face under a glamour.

An ancient Toad ritual is being held in the sinister Deeping Fen, and if Merry doesn’t rescue Teddy before it’s finished, she’ll lose him forever. But the Toadmen have been keeping dangerous secrets, and so has Caraway. The farther Merry travels into Deeping Fen’s foul waters, the more she wonders if she’s truly come to save her friend . . . or if she’s walking straight into a trap.

There’s nothing the Toadmen love more than a damsel in distress.

Lili Wilkinson has once again demonstrated her storytelling prowess in "Deep Is the Fen." The narrative seamlessly weaves darkness, humor, and warmth into a compelling tale that refuses to let readers go. The book's protagonist, Merry, is a brilliantly flawed and relatable teenager, making mistakes and creating chaos that propels the story forward in catastrophic yet captivating ways. Wilkinson's signature YA approach shines through, creating a narrative that resonates with teenage authenticity rather than pandering to an adult audience.

The relationships in the story, both romantic and platonic, are masterfully handled, allowing readers to invest deeply in the characters' journeys. Wilkinson's willingness to explore the darker aspects of the narrative adds depth to the story, making it a standout in the teen market. The horror elements are suitably disgusting, and the consequences are delivered with unflinching precision, adding to the book's overall impact. Returning to the world of "Hunger of Thorns" proves to be a delightful continuation, addressing central questions and expanding the narrative scope.

This modern fairy tale with Toadmen, witches, and an enemies-to-lovers trope is a fast-paced delight. The characters are well-developed, facing wild problems with relationships that feel authentic. Merry's evolving feelings towards Caraway add a layer of complexity, and her adaptability in challenging situations adds depth to her character. The book's pacing and character dynamics contribute to an engaging and enjoyable reading experience.

This book surpasses expectations, delivering a fantasy masterpiece that rivals her previous work. Impeccable world-building, an enthralling mystery, and a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance contribute to this addictive read. The protagonist, Merry, leads readers on a dangerous adventure to save her friend from a magic cult disguised as a secret society. The involvement of her academic rival, Caraway, adds complexity to the plot and sets the stage for a captivating narrative. "Deep Is the Fen" is a fantasy masterpiece that captivates from beginning to end.

A heartfelt thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children's/ Delacorte Press for sharing this amazing book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest feedback.

One friend in a threesome friend group decides to join a cult of toadmen. Another friend decides this is outrageous and pursues them to the bowels of hell to talk them out of it. Meanwhile friend three wants everyone to chill.

It started out solidly. I was gripped almost from the first chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of a secret brotherhood called the Toadmen who was very vague and part creepy/part weird. The YA tone made for a bunch of angsty friendship drama.

About 40-50% in, however things started to tank and unravel. All the interest started fading. All the solid storytelling began to fray.

The world building was a bit too vague for me because I couldn't tell if I was in medieval or present time. Simultaneously there is a legitimate black smithy while also cars, phones and denim. No big.

The content was incredibly inappropriate for the target audience with debauched body horror and sexual content.

Overall I was underwhelmed and disappointed.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a complimentary digital copy of the ARC.

Deep is the Fen is an original story. I enjoyed the writing style, strong main character, and fast, consistent pacing. Character development and world building were also executed well. I definitely liked this book more than A Hunger of Thorns, and the author grew so much while penning this story. The cover caught my attention initially.

I was up and down on my feelings for this book. I thought the pacing was uneven, with periods of not a lot happening and then action comes out of nowhere. The plotline around the Toads was so strange, but once we started to see what was actually happening I was more invested.

The main character Merry actually feels like a teenager, making mistakes and overreacting to things, but then her friends help her and she's able to change direction and get back on the right track. I especially liked how things played out with her friends Teddy and Saul. I was worried it might be too dramatic, but it actually was nicely done.

The book felt like it was ending a couple of times before it actually finished, but it was a nice wrap up overall.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the copy.

2.5 stars rounded down

I wanted to like this but overall I found it rather silly. I found it hard to take the secret society seriously when they called themselves Toads, as that doesn't exactly engender fear in the mind. Merry was okay as a character but I found her a bit shallow and irritating really she was so convinced she was right she refused to entertain other POVs and listen to others

This was my first read by this author and may well be my last as this was just not really enjoyable

I absolutely love the world the author created here in Deep Is the Fen. This book is full of magic, mystery, and mythology and it is truly amazing. I’ve never read about toad-based magic before and it was super intriguing. I’ve never read a fantasy quite like this one, especially for young adults. Highly recommend.

Thank you to the publisher sending me a copy to review.

I loved seeing the rebel witches through different eyes and learning even more about the world dynamics. The addition of an element from A Hunger of Thorns was interesting & I am even more curious to see where these books go (and what happens to the characters). I would also like to note about that particular element if you haven’t read A Hunger of Thorns it won’t impact your experience with this story. I had to go backwards and double check the book to make sure I was actually correct. The Toadmen are entirely more nightmarish than they sound and their clout is something else entirely.

"We’ve been waiting for you, she says, as she lets me into her mind.

It’s dark and vicious and wise in there."

The dynamic of the three friends, how they grow to accept and work through all the challenges thrown at them throughout the book was a delight. Merry’s commentary about Caraway felt a little redundant and cruel that he didn’t sink to the same level made me like him just a little more even with his actions throughout the book. I liked Merry as a character but didn’t connect with her as much as I did Maude from A Hunger of Thorns. The author does excel at exceptional found family dynamics and seeing how they grow and change throughout the story.

I would love to see a world map of the world that Lili has created in these two books. I love seeing on paper where all the events take place and where the characters go. The places that we experience in this book didn’t seem as vividly written as the first book except one area that Merry visits in particular Deeping Fen.

I am so very thankful to TBR and Beyond Tours for the opportunity to be a part of this tour, to Delacorte Press for the gifted copies of this book. To the author Lili Wilkinson I am beyond happy you decided to keep writing stories in this world you have created & I am so excited to hear what’s next! I highly recommend reading this book AND of course A Hunger of Thorns. All opinions in this review are my own. Rounded from 4.5 stars.

This book is dark and beautiful with some twisted horror elements. It might be YA but it still packs some steam. The magic and eerie grandeur of it all has a haunting lingering effect and lived on in my head after I finished reading. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love some rebellious witches?

Mostly enjoyable. Lost its way at times, and hard to get my head round whether it was olden times or not.

But the writer creates a beautiful immersive world that I loved. Her gorgeous use of descriptive smells is a real joy

Lili Wilkinson has outdone herself yet again. Deep is the Fen took a premise I couldn't resist--hello, toad-based sinister magic secret society?!--and delivered everything I wanted from it and more. It's dark, and gross (there's a certain image from the climax I don't think I'll ever scrub from my brain, which I mean as a compliment) while also being unapologetically hopeful, funny and warm; in a nutshell, it's Wilkinson's trademark approach to YA that I'll never grow tired of or stop singing about.

Merry is such a perfectly teenage protagonist: she's fiercely loyal, brave and loving, and also, not to put too fine a point on it, a complete disaster. She makes mistakes (many) and in trying to fix them usually just creates more messes, propelling the story forward in such catastrophic yet compelling ways. I couldn't help loving her, and rooting for her, as well as the rest of the cast of teenage disasters [affectionate]. Her voice, too, was impossible not to be reeled in by--Wilkinson's effortless, clean and above all distinctly teenage narrative voice has been one of the biggest strengths in every one of her titles I've read. Perhaps what I loved most about this book (and Wilkinson's writing in general) really is how much this reads as YA *for teens* rather than for a YA-loving adult audience. In a similar vein, I thought all the central relationships, both romantic and platonic, were super well handled and very easy to invest in.

It should also not go unremarked: my god, Lili Wilkinson does not pull her punches. When the narrative goes hard, it really goes HARD, both with the horror elements (suitably disgusting, thank you) and narrative consequences. It's a pretty damn dark book, especially in the teen market, and I really appreciated that Wilkinson didn't flinch away from exploring the full scope of the premise she set up. I also loved returning to the world of Hunger of Thorns and further exploring many of the central questions it asked.

Overall, this was a fresh, confident and always surprising title from an author with a masterful control of her craft. I'll be eagerly waiting for the release date, as well as whatever Lili Wilkinson puts out next--frankly, at this point I'd stand in line to read her shopping lists.

Many thanks to Allen & Unwin and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my review!

Have you ever read a book that unsettled you?

Deep is the Fen by Lili Wilkinson creeped me out a bit. Not because its a full on horror, but because of the sinister undertone lurking between the words.

I loved it.

Set in a world where magic is strongly controlled by corporate interests, Deep is the Fen is an interesting Young Adult tale about how far people will go to get their heart’s desire, growing up and watching friends paths diverge, and how men will gladly steal a woman’s talents and work to gain more power. At the heart of it all is the looming threat of a creepy (not-so) secret society up to no good.

There is wonderful character growth, interesting twists, and many moments that had me going “omg it got DARKER?!

Thank you, Allen & Unwin, for sending me a copy of Deep is the Fen for review.

What an odd little book. I’m not exactly sure what genre this one falls into but I enjoyed it! At times it seemed like it was half fantasy and half magical realism. Where does this book take place no idea. World building to help you out. None. Just go with it. Overall I liked it. It was different.

This is the 2nd book I read by this author and I really like reading this dark fantasy with a dash of romance and strong friendship!

The plot is fascinating, the mystery with the Toadman really glued my eyes to my kindle and the sweet rival romance also liven up the dark and eerie atmosphere!
I also like the great writing style which make the plot flows smoothly as secrets get unraveled one by one.

I really enjoy seeing Merry’s character growth throughout the story, her reality started to change after several weird events happening right in front of her eyes.
The conclusion was satisfying, I’m glad to see she finally accepts the truth and moved on with it.

Overall, this is a dark and enchanting tale of love, friendship and magic.
My only wish was this wasn’t a standalone cause I’d love to know more about what happens after with the witched, the toad, etc.
I’ll keep an eye out for the next book by this author in the future!

Thank you to TBR and Beyond Tour, Netgalley, author and publisher for giving me an e-ARC of the book and for having me on this book tour. I’m leaving this review voluntarily!

Fantastic! Female rage well represented as well as female empowerment. Loved the rivals to lovers trope, although Merry did piss me off at times but she wasn’t unlikeable. She was just naive and stubborn but her growth was awesome. I loved Carroway, he’s a delightful lead. I also loved that he liked Merry from the beginning. Their relationship was lovely to see being built. And her friend, Teddy and Sol, love a good strong friendship.
And Winnie!!! I love her! And missed her.
Also loved loved the use of imagery, the world of the toad men was dark and disgusting but a perfect setting for the story.
I also appreciate how she didn’t shy away from killing characters and the harsh consequences they faced from the price of magic.
Those poor witches.
And the way magic is used is awesome. The threads and how they connect to one’s life force through mettle and how she could see them and the toad stones, how clever.
This book might be more whimsical for others but I think it was fantastic!
Ugh! I just loved this so much!
I’ll definitely be reading more from Lili Wilkinson.

I didn't overly enjoy A Hunger of Thorns, which was set in the same magic world as this, so I was a bit nervous about this one but decided to give it a crack anyway. Happily, I enjoyed this one a lot more.

I thought the whole idea of "toad magic" and a creepy society of toads was really unique and interesting, different from anything I've read before. There's definitely some underlying critique here of social inequality and capitalism, but I don't think it's too in your face.

I enjoyed the creepy vibes of the swamp and the toads, but I have to say, it's QUITE dark. There are some mild body horror type elements that to me went beyond what I would expect in a YA story. I felt the book read more like a dark fairytale with teen characters, rather than being a book FOR teens, but that might just be me.

The one confusing thing about the worldbuilding is that it reads kind of medieval village style, but then all of a sudden they're driving cars. But there are no smartphones or computers. I guess there's no reason why a fantasy universe has to line up with a specific time period in the real world, but the cars and jeans did feel a little jarring tbh.

The main character was quite annoying and the story is in first person so you spend the entire book in her head. Some of her views are clearly not meant to be agreed with - just because a POV is first person, doesn't mean you're necessarily meant to agree with or empathise with them. But her small-mindedness and not-like-other-girls stubbornness was definitely grating at times.

Overall though, I did find it a really unique and satisfying read with interesting magic and a macabre atmosphere.

This was my first foray into Lili Wilkinson’s work and wow!

This dark fantasy story of secret societies, deep bonds of friendship and ancient rituals captivated my attention from beginning to end.

Deep is the Fen has a fairytale feel to it and dark cottagecore vibes. You will feel like you are going on a journey with Merry and her friends into the dark world of the Toadmen, where nothing is as it seems. It is terribly worse, in fact.

Merry sets out to save her friend from the secret society of the Toadmen and comes to head to head with sinister magic and the grotesque reality of what being a Toadman actually involves. Merry is brave, courage and determined. She appealed to me immediately in her authenticity and at times, naivety.

This is a shining example of a dark YA fantasy that will continue to live rent free in my head for some time to come!

Thank you to Allen & Unwin for my review copy!

I am so here for this world Wilkinson is building with witchcraft and mythology (mostly welsh roots I think, but largely original) and modernity and corporate greed and human exploitation and fierce girls. I liked this even better than Hunger, because Merry is far more sympathetic than Maude, and am looking forward to the next in what is looking to be an ongoing series, although each book stands alone (except for one relatively minor crossover character who you don’t need to know is a crossover, the plot doesn’t need that information, but it’s so emotionally satisfying if you do, I fully jumped and had tears in my eyes).
Anyway.
I loved this. I loved the way story and power and friendship weave together and how ugly some of it is and how beautiful other parts are and the Toads and the Witches and all of it, really.

Well, that was weird. I’m not sure if I liked it?

The first half was infuriating because the main character was INSUFFERABLE. Complaining that nobody is listening to her, but she’s also not listening to anyone, or what anyone else wants? I also don’t think she explains ever why she’s so upset/afraid of the Toadmen. The first half it just feels like she’s just constantly making things worse for herself.

The second half was a wild rollercoaster. And also felt incredibly random and rushed. I don’t think enough time was spent on some parts. I also think the ending was wrapped up a little too quickly? I thought that she wasn’t going to be a damsel in distress kind of main character based on the dedication (silly me) but nah

Every now and then a book comes along that is so unique it surprises you, and for me it is this book. I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but DEEP IS THE FEN was so hauntingly atmospheric, so perfectly voicey, that I found myself absolutely speeding through the pages. Merry is a wonderfully relatable main character, and I was so drawn by the themes of love and friendship that echo throughout. Lili Wilkinson pulls no punches when it comes to storytelling - the book is equal parts beautiful and gory, devastating and uplifting, chilling and heartwarming. I absolutely loved it!

As an artist, I love when a story inspires me to sketch out the characters or the setting right away! I immediately needed to doodle The Toad King, the Deeping Court, toad bones, chickens, swampy marshes, and a cozy cottage.

This book gives cottage core. A bit macrabe, mystery, romance and a bit of Handmaiden’s Tale thrown in. A twisted fairy tale where I couldn’t guess the ending (pleasantly surprised).

A very unique story. Delighted to read it. I consumed it in one gulp! 😉

"Deep is the Fen" by Lili Wilkinson beckons readers into a world where magic and mystery intertwine, crafting a narrative that is as captivating as it is unforgettable. Set in the charming town of Candlecott, Merry's life turns unexpectedly when her best friend, Teddy, becomes entangled with the enigmatic Toadmen—a secret society steeped in sinister traditions and dark magic.

Determined to save Teddy from the clutches of the Toadmen, Merry finds herself reluctantly teaming up with her academic rival, Caraway Boswell. As they delve deeper into the secrets of the Toadmen, Merry discovers that nothing is as it seems, and danger lurks around every corner. Merry's resolve is tested with each revelation, leading her on a perilous journey into the heart of Deeping Fen, where the true extent of the Toadmen's power becomes horrifyingly clear.

Wilkinson effortlessly weaves together moments of beauty and gore, devastation and upliftment, chilling darkness and heartwarming light. The result is a narrative that is equal parts captivating and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impression long after the final page is turned. With its haunting atmosphere, richly drawn characters, and pulse-pounding suspense, "Deep is the Fen" is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and atmospheric storytelling.

In conclusion, Deep is the Fen" is a wonderful novel that deserves to be savored and celebrated. With its unique blend of atmosphere, emotion, and storytelling prowess, it earns a well-deserved four-star rating and a permanent place on the bookshelf of any reader seeking an unforgettable journey.

A story of the corruption of power and its ability to mislead even the strongest of people. Interwoven with a rich taste of Celtic folk law and the strength of united women.

Wilkinson masters emotional subtly and scene description to capture the reader in the peaceful life of Candlecott and the stark contrast of the horrifying Deeping Fen.

Deep is the Fen is my first Lili Wilkinson book, but it certainly won't be my last. I went into Deep is the Fen somewhat blind--I knew there were secret societies, a romance, and a fight for magic--but was so pleasantly surprised by how everything unfolded. Wilkinson's writing is deliciously atmospheric and haunting, making me never want to leave the world she crafted. I adored her blend of modern tech with ancient magic, and I love the nods to Welsh/English legends scattered throughout (I see you, Jenny Greenteeth!).

The pacing is perfect, and I especially adored how Merry's first love interest is not the one she ends up with (no spoilers, but I love how Wilkinson does this). I love that friendship is just as important as romance here, and I love, love, love Caraway. He's the perfect romantic lead, and the romance between him and Merry unfolds beautifully, intertwining with the mystery of the Toadmen and the urgency of the plot in a way I found deeply satisfying. Speaking of deeply satisfying -- that third act is one of the best that I've read in a very long time. While there are a lot of plot threads here, Wilkinson balances every single one of them masterfully, creating a standalone that is both fully realized AND ripe for a sequel (seriously, where is my Teddy and Sol book?). My only regret is that I had to turn the last page, and couldn't stay in Candlecott forever.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Delacorte Press, and Lili Wilkinson for gifting me this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!

The only thing that pissed me off badly was the fact that the FMC kept on commenting on the fact that MMC's father was rich and again and again ignoring the fact that it seemed to hurt or effect the MMC and if even a small thing was said against her by the MMC, she was highly offended.

I wasn't aware this was the second book in a series when I went into it, so I hope that I didn't miss out on a whole chunk of this world... this book was such a treat!

This felt like intense thriller mixed with cozy fantasy and I am here for the combo. We get a creepy secret society, the Toadmen, which-lets face it-wasn't that big of a secret, really... and Merry who will do anything in her power to get one of her best friends (and her one unrequited love) Teddy to stop from joining. Meanwhile, a rival of hers, Caraway approaches her for help.

Thinking this is a two birds, one stone sort of situation, Merry teams up with Caraway in order to help him, but also to help Teddy. The one hitch... she is learning that behind Caraway's cold as ice glamour he never removes, he is very different from who she always thought he was. As she gets closer to him, she learns more and more about the goings on of the Toadmen, putting herself in very real danger. It seems as though Caraway is hiding some of his own secrets and Merry has a hard time coming to terms with the truth.

This book was just all vibes! I loved it. From the moment Caraway comes on the scene I was here for the rivals to something more feel that I got. And, it only got better. The Toadmen are seriously bizarre, as a whole idea. It is the typical secret society ideology... Climbing through the ranks of success on the backs of others, but with these really great magical elements that make them even scarier.

This book has it all, though. There is a thrilling plot, a dark magical haze, some romance, and dangerous people looking to hold dominion over Merry when she gets too close to the truth. I highly recommend this book and definitely want to go back and read the first book in the series.
