If you are tired of romance novels with unrealistically “perfect protagonists, then this story of love triumphing over self-doubt is for you
Callie St. Claire is from an abusive household and is overweight and self-doubting. But with a good heart, God, and prayer, she escapes the prison she knows as Indianapolis, Indiana and heads to the quaint, Hallmark-esque, bayfront town of Edenton, North Carolina in hopes of finding herself and her place in the world. When Callie arrives in Edenton and gets to know some of the locals, she finds everything she never knew she wanted or needed.
Colt Andrews is a local Edenton rancher who has not fully come to terms with his father’s death, the sudden departure of his mother, and the loss of his girlfriend to another man. He takes solace in running Redemption Ranch, a place where horses and people alike can find redemption from whatever ills life had thrown their way. When Colt meets Callie, he finds everything he never knew he wanted or needed.
Colt eventually offers Callie a job and a cabin at Redemption Ranch, where she quickly bonds with a horse named Warrior over their similar pasts of being abused by people who were supposed to love them. As Callie and Colt spend more time together, electricity sparks between them. But they both have past hurts that cause insurmountable insecurities. Can they move beyond this to mend their broken roads and live together in the love God has for them, or will they instead continue keeping each other at arm’s length? Find out here, in Book 1 of the Edenton Bay Romance Series.
I'm grateful to Elizabeth Woodrow for writing this book. This Christian romance is for those readers who often feel self-conscious but aren't giving up on love by being strong and courageous anyway. There were many times in the book that I couldn't help but keep reading to see what would happen next. I already know I'll enjoy Woodrow's second novel, especially if the characters are from Edenton Bay and Redemption Ranch. If you need a reminder of the strength of community, the empowerment of scripture, and the fruit that comes from being still sometimes (when you're rather do anything but), this book is for you!
Mending Broken Roads is a sweet Christian romance about a plus size woman with no friends or family (besides an abusive aunt) who decides to finally leave her hometown of Indianapolis. Callie no longer has anything holding her back so she decides to randomly point at a map and go wherever her finger lands. She ends up in Edenton Bay, North Carolina with no plans other than a fresh start. Callie has been saddled with grief from the loss of her parents and shame at her looks and the way she was treated by her aunt. Callie vows that this fresh start will turn her life around. During her first week in Edenton Bay she meets a handsome man at grief group but decides pretty quickly that he could never be interested in a fat girl like her. Colt strongly disagrees; he thinks she is beautiful, no matter what her size is and works hard to make Callie like him. He invites her to live in an empty cabin at his ranch and help out with the horses as rent. Not having any other plans, Callie decides to move onto Redemption Ranch. Working alongside each other every day becomes a joy and their attraction to each other is palpable. However, Callie is so filled with self-doubt that she is certain tat he doesn't want to purse anything other than a friendship with her. What will it take to heal her heart and allow her to trust Colt? This debut novel is the first in a series by local author, Elizabeth Woodrow, who currently resides in Whiteland, Indiana. A quick inspirational read that is a little light on editing but heavy on heart.
Callie has had a hard life. She lost her parents when she was young. Forcing her to live with her aunt. Who abused her emotionally and physically. She decides to start new and moves to a small town. Right away she is drawn to Colt. But doesn't believe he could love her. Due to the emotional abuse her aunt has instilled in her. Will she be able to let that go and take a chance? Colt is completely intrigued by Callie. But since he already had a relationship fail. He has a hard time trusting woman. Will he be able to let his fear go and let her in? This was a good clean, Christian romance. This had a lot of realistic issues many of us face, about ourselves, are willingness to let past hurts go and trusting others.
Getting to see Callie grow and learn to love herself was empowering for me! I've been struggling with self-love for years so Callie is so relatable!
For the Romance part, I felt myself rooting for Callie and Colt the entire time. Colt is 100% a book boyfriend of mine.
Also, the theme throughout the book of how our broken roads lead us to where we're meant to be is powerful, just like the Rascal Flatts song. Loved it!!!
If you're looking for a clean, Christian based romance this might be the book for you. It's the story of two wounded and hurting people who work through their doubts and fears to find each other. The emotional swings of the young woman seemed a little excessive to me but the story made a pleasant read. I won a copy of this book in a Goodread giveaway for this honest review.
Thank you, Elizabeth Woodrow and Van Rye publishing. The story of Callie and colt has a good premise. It tells of faith and triumph but lacks details. With more background information, readers could better understand the characters reactions, emotions, and motivators. Redemption Ranch and Warrior added interest to the story. I am interested in the second book of the series.
