Apache Delivery Service

Rate this book
A jungle horror story by Matt Kindt (Ether, Mind MGMT) and Tyler Jenkins (Fear Case).

Two haunted men are on a hunt in the jungles of Vietnam searching for clues to a missing treasure trove of gold that was stolen from all over Asia by a Japanese general during World War II. Eventually they find a series of hidden caves in the mountains near the coast.

Bodies start showing up—murder victims and mutilated corpses. There is a rumor that the caves and gold are protected by terrifying witches that have been living in the cave system for thousands of years. As our warriors travel deeper into the mystery they learn more disturbing facts about each other and become paranoid of one another as they get closer and closer to the gold, while, at the same time, a bizarre serial killer is hunting them down.

First things first - I've read quite a few comics drawn by Tyler Jenkins over the years, and I've always been kind of hot and cold on his work, but his work here is excellent. It might be his best work, I would say.

I can't say the same for Matt Kindt's script, which starts out interesting enough, but doesn't go anywhere interesting from there, and the ending feels pat.

Read it for the art, I'd say.

This was fast-paced for sure and like tells the story of this Navajo kid whose working for the military in Vietnam but one day gets captured by some guy who believes there maybe gold hidden deep within the area and conscripts his help for the same but he may not exactly be a good person and so will our lead assist this guy or not what will they find? Its one of those stories that examine human greed and all and the purity and innocents of the lead but how it gets lost in war oftentimes and the greed that surrounds us but how we should not succumb to the baser instincts, some moments felt a bit slow and confusing but overall a good read and what I love about it how the art takes the elad here and really is bloody and visceral!

Sometimes, writers have a good idea which goes awry somewhere along the way. This comic book is the example of it. One would think that a story about Navajo soldier in Vietnam war, who goes to chase Nazi gold hidden in the jungled would be a blast. Alas, that's not the case here. Idea is on point, execution not so. Kindt doesn't know what to with his script which ends up with some plot holes. If only art tried to pull it out, but no. Even though Jenkins knows how to make a panel. Don't be fooled with ŷ synopsis.

Not particularly imaginative plot, with not particularly developped characters, not particularly well told and not particularly well drawn.

To sum it up: not particularly good

Una historia que promete, pero se desinfla enseguida, con un dibujo muy interesante pero también muy irregular. Obviable.

Matt Kindt delivers a Matt Kindt special in Apache Delivery Service: weird vibes and incoherent storytelling matched with scratchy artwork. It's Apocalypse Now but with a Native American main character (specifically, a Navajo main character, even though his racist comrades refer to him as "Apache").

The character, whose name I have forgotten, gets tangled up with a mysterious treasure seeker in the jungles of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. There are allusions to magical cities and Nazi gold, but it's never quite clear what is real and what is a dream in Apache Delivery Service. The conclusion is unsatisfying and the characters are blank slates. The Native American elements are painfully underserved. The best thing I can say about Apache Delivery Service is that it's a quick read.

Apache Delivery Service really pulled me in initially - it's colourful and vivid artwork really stands apart from many of the other books I've been reading lately and that feels really fresh here. Likewise, the premise too is an interesting one - the initial set-up definitely has you feeling like there's a story to be told here.

It sadly doesn't last though. It very quickly takes a sharp corner with its plot as it gains momentum and you just can't shake the feeling that it's not quite what you initially thought you were signing up for.

The art has a bit of an abstract cartoon-like touch to it, which I quite liked, but there are a few moments where it feels like it just muddies the translation as to what's happening in a panel.

Overall, Apache Delivery Service is a very short read. It feels like it's over before it even really starts so I'm doubtful this one will blow you away. That said, it wasn't half bad either. I think given the premise here I possibly expected a little more from it and it just didn't hit that mark.

War usually makes a great setting for horror stories, mainly because war itself is a real life horror stories. War horror comics have been around a while, going back to EC Comics and DC's superb Weird War Tales.

This was a little different than I expected, as we have a Navajo soldier in the Viet Nam war becoming wrapped up with a serial killer in a hunt for Nazi gold. Throw in some witches, and you have a great story.

The art fit the story well and Kindt knew when to "lay out" and just let the art tell the story, so we arent stuck with an overly wordy tale.

If you're a fan of war comics and/or horror comics, this is worth a read.

At this point it feels weird to rate every Kindt’s book full fives, but I can’t do otherwise. Loved it. Quick, simple, interesting.

To be honest, when I saw that this story had an indigenous main character, I got pretty excited. Add in that I grew up with a Vietnam veteran for a grandfather, and then my love of witchcraft, and you’d think this was a perfect story for me. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

I don’t like the art, plane and simple. I have very little artistic talent so I am usually not one to judge harshly, but some of the panels were so scratchy and illegible that I couldn’t understand what was going on. Some people may find this style endearing, but it is not my cup of tea. I removed an entire star because art should enhance the story, but this took away from an okay script.

The first 2 issues, great, a bit of a rushed set up, but I can appreciate that people have different storytelling methods. But by issue 3, I was really wondering how they were going to wrap everything up. The witches should’ve had a much bigger role in this story. I understand that they mainly served as the device to prove that the real evil wasn’t in the forest but within the hearts of the people trying to steal the treasure. It’s an allegory that certainly hits, but because of the anticlimactic, predicable-ness of the entire story, it feels very flat.

Also, the indigenous main character had a good relationship with his family, we see that his dad or grandpa imparted a lot of wisdom to Ernie before getting into an accident shortly before Ernie’s deployment. I seriously doubt Ernie would have just stayed in Vietnam, a country where he knows literally nothing, down to the language, when he was so concerned his family at home. It feels like Kindt rushed this to get to his next series. Two more issues would’ve been fine for explaining the plot, but with just 4 issues, it’s a short but ultimately mediocre read.

I will say I was not a fan of the art at all. It has that muddy quality I see far too often in American graphic novels. That said I did enjoy this horror short story which is what it is. I might have liked it to be a bit longer to flesh out the characters because there were interesting ideas that got truncated.

Apache Delivery Service is actually the code name for the main character who is actually Navajo and wants a) to be called by his own name b) for the racism to stop or at least call him Navajo and not Apache c) to not really be in the war at all d) again to stop the racist ideas that all Indians are great at tracking because his commander has definitely bought into there being something nearly mystical about him and it pisses him off.

We see hints of his past as a teen, not even being able to hunt deer without throwing up. He prefers going out on long recon missions to get away from the others in his troop (probably needs a break from all the racist comments slung his way). When he's out, he falls into a trap and ends up in the hands of a rather refined man who is not a soldier but rather a treasure hunter looking for a gold hoard. He has been watching Apache and wants his help to find the gold.

As the blurb suggestions there are a lot of bodies around the gold and for more than good reason which is all I want to say about that because I wouldn't want to spoil it.

I thought the ending was rather clever.

(3,6 of 5 for tale not about gold set in Vietnam conflict time)
Kindt and Jenkins are not unknown names to me. And Vietnam's "war" setting always intrigues me. So I gave it a chance. And I must say, I enjoyed the story, even if it was a bit shorter than I expected. But there are several problems for me. The execution of the story feels like it was some of Kindt's early works. And that is not a compliment. Feels a bit rough and tough, and the art doesn't help at all. Especially the colouring - it feels like somebody just used colour bucked in the Paint app. And missed several times and didn't bother. So the picture, especially the detail, sometimes blends into a mush of lines and random colours. Adding the attempt to simulate the darkness or dimness of the jungle, some scenes are borderline messy.
It isn't bad, but sadly art is messy and the story is far from deep as it pretends to be.

This was another striking Matt Kindt story that achieved a lot within scant 4 issues.

The story is mainly set during the Vietnam war and our protagonist is of Native American descent (Navaho, not Apache) and is known for being in the right place to call in tactical air strikes pretty accurately. Thus he's the titular Apache Delivery Service. But during a walk he takes to clear his head, he encounters someone trying to locate lost Nazi gold he suspects is somewhere in the jungle.

It's not what I would typically expect from a Kindt story, but once you're in it, you'll still feel his distinct writing style at work. This story has its own layers of mystery and there's just enough to keep the 4-issues substantial but not overloaded either.

Good quick read.

Review for #1: No expectations going into this book, and was pleasantly surprised out of the gate. Jenkins art styling while minimalistic is exceedingly detailed in all the right parts and effectively communicates idea, emotion and intent with aplomb. The script is interesting and leaves me curious with its twist where this story will go (hunter hunted hunting hunter hunted)-- especially thrust in the Vietnam War setting and backdrop. I'm onboard for more. Love the Lawrence Campbell variant cover.

Matt Kindt is hit or miss for me. Here, its a miss. This was billed as a horror book and I never got that vibe. The book reads incredibly fast. There is such little backstory or build-up that readers only get a glimpse into Ernie or the antagonist's life. I think the idea is solid but there just wasn't enough substance. Tyler Jenkins has done some good things but his art here looked rushed. Overall, this was a big misfire.

Really love the simple one-arc series Kindt and Jenkins have created over the last few years, their repertoire is getting pretty impressive. Some great spooky, foreboding ambiance mixed with impressionistic backstories made for a good read.

A creepy watercolor Vietnamese horror story.

A quick read about the violence of war and indigenous life, becomes a crazy nazi gold hunt guarded by witches. Lots of fun!
