THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED

In the days when powerful witches used their magic to shield humanity from demons, their allies and guardians were a group of men gifted with preternatural abilities of their own–the witch guardians. But when a band of witches traded their humanity for demonic power, the ancient bond was broken, and the guardians became the hunters.

Darcy MacAlister knows nothing of demons or magic. But this beautiful young woman is about to discover the truth about her past . . . and her future. For she is a witch–not just any witch, but the key to breaking the curse that has plagued witches and the men who hunt them. For if a hunter kills an innocent witch by mistake, the price is no less than a piece of his soul.

Axel Locke, gorgeous leader of the Wing Slayer Hunters, has sworn never to shed the blood of the earth witches who have resisted the temptation of demonic power. But when his sister is cursed by a demon witch, he discovers that Darcy MacAlister may hold the cure–if she can master her newfound powers in time. When the chase begins and Axel and Darcy come face-to-face, this hunter must weigh his soul against his honor–and against his heart.

I tried. This is one of those books they were supposed to be good for me. Come on, familiar elements, magic, alpha man, great female character, sexy times. But it was not for me.

description

At first I thought I could really get over the fact I wasn’t enjoying the male mc and half of the book is narrated by him. He was just too much and nothing at all for me. He was way too intense without reason. I mean, yes, I know he lusted after the woman but, honestly, his I fuck her or I kill her attitude was such a turn off to me.

description

I don’t know what happens next. Maybe everything changes my right now I can’t bring myself to care. I really wanted to know more about the witch ways and how the chakras work for them and the spells and all of that but, sadly, everything was eclipsed by the arrogant prick.

I read this for the Urban Fantasy square for Romance Bingo and it was also my Kindle Freebie selection.

Staring at her, he said, "I'm here for you, Darcy."

Urban fantasy isn't usually a sub-genre I read in and I'm not sure if that was why I had a problem getting into this one or not. It seemed like the world rules were dealt out a bit randomly, making it feel incoherent at times. There were a lot of supernatural beings with earth and demon witches, witch hunters and rogue, and ancestors and gods. While I appreciated the lack of info dumps, I never felt like I could grasp the world fully because of all the moving parts.

The heroine is an earth witch but doesn't know it so when she is kidnapped by the hero who is a witch hunter to remove a death curse from his little sister, she has no idea how to. At first the hero has to control is "bloodlust" to want to kill the heroine:

"But you're one of them. How will you keep from killing me?"
He hit the very edge of his control. The hot lust seized his balls, while the compulsion screamed for her blood. Sweat beaded and ran down his back. "Sex," he said. "I want to screw you more than I want to kill you."

That's right, this kidnapped woman who has been thrown into a supernatural world is told my her captor that if she doesn't want him to kill her, she must have sex with him. Needless to say, this beginning to their relationship left a bad taste in my mouth. I know more leeway is given in fantasy/supernatural stories because of destined soulmates, magic, or whatever other supernatural elements but this thinking and element kept me from connecting with the hero and heroine's romantic relationship.

If you like urban fantasy stories, you might want to give this one a go, the world and supernatural elements seem interesting enough and with the introduction to everything already done, the next books in the series might make more sense. There's a slew of side male friends of the hero who were introduced who have hero potential written all over them.

Rating: 2.5/3 stars to Blood Magic

Firstly I would like to say that turning down an unfamiliar path, this was a different reading practise for me seeing as it was my first kindle book using kindle app! I don’t think anything can beat the physicality of holding a book and feeling its substantial weight, making the read along with the characters feel far more palpable and accessible. I did miss that element a lot because reading off of a screen tends to reduce my indulgence, making me feel detached and reaching for pages that aren’t there. I will continue to try kindle books as they are more accessible, but I will always prefer paperbacks 😊

…On to the review!

“Do you know why they ran away scared?
Her stomach clenched. “Because they sensed the witch in me.
“They sensed you power. They know at some instinctive level that you are more powerful than them. Women like you, witches, have always scared mortal men.
He had her attention. “But not you?
“I’m not scared of you. I’m afraid of losing control of the curse in me, but I am not afraid of you…

‘Blood Magic by Jennifer Lyon (the first in a fantasy romance series) is set in the modern-day world with elements of the paranormal, entwined with mystery and the fiery heat of romance. Darcy McAlister is a seemingly normal young woman who has just lost her adoptive mother from a long-term illness. If anyone knows loneliness its Darcy, always on the receiving end of rejection and denial she only wants acceptance, and wonders of the mother who left her a large tapestry is all she has of her biological mother who she knows nothing about. From the voices in her head, to the peculiarity she oozes, Darcy relies on no one but her protective cousin Joe, her best friend Carla, and the presence of a hawk always there to console her.

‘She’d spent her life on the outside of every circle. This wasn’t any different.

‘Her sense of déjà vu and fatalism shattered, as if her destiny had shifted.

Axel Foley *ahem* apologies Axel Locke is a Wing Slayer Hunter. Most of his kind have fallen prey to a decades-old curse and Axel alongside his men - are fighting against it to keep their souls intact. 30 years ago the Hunters were cursed by a demon witch who cast a spell on their kind, and now the Hunters lust for the intoxicating power of witch blood, curbing their blood-fever with sex. Hunters became weaker after the curse, now plagued and wrenched with a need for blood, most have already given into it, becoming ‘Sdzܱ, hunting earth witches to feed their vicious appetites, hoping that by killing all witches they can gain back their lost immortality.

‘The divide between witches and hunters was deep and steeped in suspicion.

Axel and his men are non-hunters, sworn to each other by a pledge to never go ‘rDzܱ, and to never kill a witch lest they forfeit their promised souls, but witch blood is too strong a temptation even for Axel’s strong will…with only sex offering a reprieve from their compulsions. Hounded by his lowlife father to turn rogue since he was fourteen, Axel is mortified at the idea of losing control to the receptiveness of the curse. He is viewed as a threat by his contemporaries, trying to turn him or trying to kill him they all fear him, if not for his deadly stubbornness, then for the hawk tattoo on his back, marker of their lost leader…only Axel doesn’t know how it got there

“I’ve fought this curse since I was fourteen. Self-control is what I live by every day.

One night Axel’s mom appears with his little sister Hannah, who now has the cursed death mark on her forehead. Now that Hannah is destined for death, Axel has only two weeks until the full moon to either find an earth witch to heal his sister’s declining health, or kill the demon witch who initially cast the spell but killing any witch would place Axel’s soul in danger of perversion. Any cost is worth paying for the sister who means the world to him, irrespective of the sacrifices to himself
even offering himself to the disparaging curse waiting to claim his kind
…even if that means capturing an earth witch to help him lift Hannah’s curse, a witch that’s doesn’t even know she is a witch.Enter Darcy.

‘Danger and magic danced in the air between them.

“Arrogant hunter.
“Prickly witch.

The next night Darcy is attacked by two rogue hunters, saved by Axel only to be taken by him instead. Now residing at Axel’s remote cliffside property Darcy is more confused than she has ever been because apparently she is a witch, she can heal, and is now a prisoner to a dominant man who won’t let her go until she cures his sister. Lost in this mess of learning, crafting and accessing her witchcraft, Darcy is made to confront what she fears, because she has always known how different she is. Darcy is a mix of vulnerably determined and eagerly focussed, the kind of protagonist that holds fear, terrified of what she has been thrown into, but goes with the flow, and listens to her instincts in this messy situation.

“You look like hell. Black eye, split lip and too little sleep.
“Thanks. I’m trying a new look called Kidnapped and Pissed.

With a witch now living under his roof, Axel’s imperious compulsions draw him to Darcy’s blood and even closer to becoming like the cold-blooded Hunters he has fought against. But he wants her body too. After tasting her blood, Axel and Darcy are locked in a battle of want, need and danger, drawn to each other by magic, impulse and desire. His bloodlust for Darcy wars with his need for her, causing lines to blur and priorities to change.

“When I catch your smell, the scent of your power, it makes me burn for your blood. Then I touch you and it’s something else together…

A sense of belonging has always been missing from Darcy’s life, and she puts any ideas of a normal life to rest. Darcy is now the target of the rogues, who seem to be relentlessly pursuing her, not to mention a demon witch on her back, and a captor she has a patent connection with. Separated not merely by the curse, but Darcy’s history and Axel’s mistrust, these two are stuck in a conflict amongst themselves. They don’t trust each other but their bodies do. While she is similarly bemused by her situation, Darcy feels compassion for her kidnapper and their strong reactions to each other spice up the story, making the tension constant.

‘Something fleeting travelled through his guts, but he focused on her face, on her excitement. Her hoy in learning what she could do. Her success. Her vibrant beauty that he wanted to taste. It was so opposite of what he was, what he had the potential to become, that he longed to have more of it, more of Darcy.

Compounding my thoughts after reading this took some time because I wasn’t sure how to determine a rating or elucidate my feelings when they were largely varied and mixed. After reading the synopsis, I thought that perhaps this would be an interchangeable read-alike of ‘Dark Lover by J R. Ward (which is a favourite of mine) and so I set my sights on it, hoping it would be similar. We have an alpha male, fiery romance, and a durable female lead , but there were various idiosyncrasies in the plot that stalled my reading experience because of the inconsistent flow of the story coupled with the rate and ways in which we were receiving information. The premise was interesting indeed, but at times character choices and actions weren’t realistic, resulting in poor choices and the paths they led to.

“You believed in me when you had no reason to. I want you to know I’m never cruel without a reason.

The writing held a place of ambivalence for me, some parts were easy to read and easy to follow, other parts did not make sense, leaving me to wonder if I just read something incorrectly, therefore the writing and some of the scenes felt loosely structured, and roughly formulated. The flow of the book felt coarsely directed and the events felt scattered. The writing tried too hard to force an understanding of the world’s components on the reader, which only confused my understanding. The building of the world is loosely and laxly tackled, with too much emphasis on repetitive lengthy dialogue which can obfuscate the reader - and not much on character depth and the actual receiving of relevant information and the things we want to know.

‘His emotional weight was heavy, heavier than her own.

The rising points of action and surprises were what made the story for me, but the momentum would soon dissipate, fracturing my interest and making me wish that the story would give me more. Character reactions felt glossed over at times, leading to a sense that what happened wasn’t entirely realistic. The story wasn’t told in the most lucrative way, thwarting my enjoyment and stirring a sense of fluctuating restlessness and detached affection for the characters I wanted to feel more for. I love Darcy, and Axel, Joe and especially vibrant little Hannah, but there wasn’t enough depth of character for me to say they were absolutely amazing. They had the budding appeal to be much more colourful and to contribute more to the story than they did.

“Darcy. Ram opened his eyes and looked up at her. “What are you doing here?
She smiled down at him. “Pissing off Axel.
“Thank you. For healing me and pissing off Axel.

Though I found difficulty trying to follow the plot and fusing the disorderly pieces together, through the confusion I did find many moments of anticipation and enthusiasm, and the plot twists did stop me in my dubious tracks to startle me. I liked the romance, I liked how he sex scenes weren’t overly done, but rather founded on the magic that brought both Axel and Darcy together, initiated on a magically bound and magically kindled platform rather than pure hardcore sex for the sake of eroticism, which made the approach to the sex scenes work.

‘Her power, her sexuality, her very center, called to him and demanded that he answer.

I don’t mind cliché, I don’t mind tropes so long as they are done well and I enjoy the story being told, and if done in an inventive way even better! I do give this book points for inventiveness and a new take on witches/ witch hunters.

“There is no evil in you, love. You’re a witch, embrace it.

This story is told in a countdown fashion, counting down the days until the death mark will kill Hannah, unfolding in a chase against time, with Axel and Darcy limited in choice while both are surrounded by uncertainty. I like what the characters brought to the table, I like what the author was trying to do, and I like that when I was done with the book, I felt that Darcy and Axel’s story wasn’t yet done. This was an easy, fast and slow paced light paranormal read with mystery and danger, tension and a heady romance. What starts out as a need to outwit death and save his sister, turns into a relationship of promises and affection ‘kԲ and ‘cپ accumulating a sense of trust when their kinds have been severed apart for so long.

“Axel…you’re in my head.
“And you’re in mine.

“You’re brave, compassionate and too damned beautiful.

Warning: Mentions of torture and abuse. Bloody fighting. Many sex scenes, and a lot of swearing.

4 - ”I’m trying a new look called kidnapped and pissed. Stars!

Jennifer Lyon isn’t a new author to me, I have read and really enjoyed some of her contemporary /erotic romances in the past. But Blood Magic was my first foray into her PNR offerings.

I am all for a sassy heroine and Darcy hit the tone perfectly for me. Vulnerable and determined make for a good mix when you take into account the woman has just discovered she’s a witch, and been taken prisoner by the and oh, so sexy Wing Slayer Hunter Axel Locke.

”I want to screw you more than I want to kill you.

There is a lot going on in this book, and it took me a good 25% to get into the story and get over the barrage of characters that you are initially introduced to. But once it gets going it is pretty much full steam ahead until the finish.

”I don’t know what it is between us, but I want it And you want it.

Plenty of action, a little intrigue and sexual tension you can cut with a knife really bought this story together. Axle and Darcy both have strong feelings and emotions for each other, and it seems that they also bring out strong reactions in each other as well, this gave their sexy-times a little added heat, and kept the overall flow of the story really well paced.

This is the first book in Jennifer’s Wing Slayer Hunters series, and with the wealth of characters we are introduced to in this book, I am interested to see where the author takes the story next. We are given a glimpse of Sutton and Carla in the first book, but Soul Magic their story is due for release on 19th October. I really like that the author is re-releasing these titles with two week windows, it means you can keep the story in your memory and move onto the next one without massive breaks in-between.

”Arrogant hunter… ”Prickly witch.

**5 Witches, and Hunters, and Deamons, Oh My! Stars!!**

I loved it!! This is the kind of PNR story I love. It was sensual and passionate. Laced with danger and mystery. The world building Jennifer Lyon has created is addictive.

Darcy and Axel have off the charts chemistry. They are both strong and have unique powers all on their own, but together they are even more powerful. Darcy is smart and passionate. Axel is intense, but so sweet and protective. I loved how he interacted with Hannah (his little sister). I loved the build up between the two of them. Although there was instant attraction, the author took time to build up to the crescendo.

The other Wing Slayer Hunters are intriguing as well. I can't wait to take the journey with each of them to breaking the curse and finding their mates. In other words, I'M ALL IN with this series. I can't wait for Sutton and Carla's story! Happy reading!!

I didn’t like the causes of conflict. Some parts were a little slow, too much thinking not enough action.

STORY BRIEF:
Some witches wanted more power and linked with demons to get it. They became demon witches. Demon witches harmed humans, so wing slayers were created to kill the demon witches. Thirty years ago, a few demon witches cursed regular witches and wing slayers. The result was that regular witches powers were reduced because they could not have familiars (their animal helpers). Also, wing slayers became like drug addicts craving witch blood on their skin, but not drinking it like vampires. However, if a wing slayer killed any regular or demon witch, he became a rogue. When a rogue died, his soul would wander eternity in an undesirable place.

A demon witch, Linette, put a curse on Hannah, a human. Hannah will die unless another witch removes the curse or someone kills Linette before the next full moon. Axel is a wing slayer and Hannah’s brother. He believes Darcy may be able to remove the curse. If she cannot, Axel is prepared to kill Linette, become a rogue and lose his soul. 26-year old Darcy was adopted as a baby and never knew she was a witch. All of a sudden rogues are attacking her. Axel takes her to his hidden home and tells her she is a witch. She must learn a lifetime of magic in less than two weeks in order to help Hannah.

This book is the first in a series. The second book “Soul Magic is about Sutton, another wing slayer.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Most of the story is Darcy trying to learn and gain witch powers. She’s having difficulty, and it takes a long time. Parts of the story are repetitive, talking about the problems and worrying about solving them. I would have preferred less pondering and more action. A few times, I wanted the story to be over. Every story needs conflict between the hero and heroine, but I didn’t enjoy their conflict in this story. It wasn’t logical. I describe it in Spoilers below.

The plot reminded me of parts of Harry Potter and Twilight. Darcy the witch was placed with a human family to save her from an evil rogue, and she didn’t learn she was a witch until she was an adult. The wing slayers are like the Twilight vampires, craving witch blood but having to restrain themselves. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, it’s ok with me to use these ideas. I’m just pointing out that as I read the book, I was thinking about the similarities.

Most important question is how can I get my hands on the next one? Ms. Lyon an ARC please.

I wasn't sure about this book but once I got into it and realised that halfway through this book, I've already read something by this author I was throughly enjoing it. 3.5 Witch and Witch Hunter Stars.

Thirty years ago, witches and witch hunters were cursed alike due to the demon witches. There souls were ripped out but they managed to gain them back but they weren't originally the souls that they started out with. The witch hunters are cursed, witches blood sings to them and as soon as they kill a witch they loose their Soul and turn rogue. The witches have limited amount of their Magic left since the curse and they are in hiding.

Darcy MacAlister is different and always has been. In the small town of Glassbreakers, Cali. She has always felt that she has been left out, different. Her strongest connection was to her adoptive mother. her world and life is about to change.

Axel Locke is a witch hunter and he protects the remaining earth witches with his brethen, the other wing slayers. They have promised never to go rogue. Although they haven't been actively participating either.

Axel's little sister Hannah has been death cursed and Axel kidnaps Darcy to help. Well actually his father wanted him to kill her but whatever floats your boat.

Ms. Lyon creates a unique world where everything has it's balance. Characters that are unique and develop throughout the book. There is the main plot of the book and the subplots which are important to the book.

There was some repeating in the book which was a bit annoying but necessary to remind you of specific things.

I struggled hard with just how to rate "Blood Magic" by Jennifer Lyon. On the plus side, she managed to come up with a new twist on witches using a fusion of mythology, lore, and witchcraft. On the minus side, the writing wasn't as tight as I like and the story seemed to 'hop and jump' for me. So I decided to round up in the hope that the next in this series, which I DO intend to read, will sharpen and smooth out some of the rough edges I found here.

Darcy has just buried her adoptive mother when a strange man threatens her life. Twenty four hours later, she's been assaulted by two men, only to be rescued by a third and then held hostage until she agrees to heal his little sister by casting a spell??? OOO-kay.

Axel is the leader of what's left of the witch guardians. Unfortunately, since they were cursed as a group thirty years ago, they now crave the blood of the very witches they are supposed to protect. More and more guardians are killing witches which turns them rogue where they live to kill more and more witches for the blood high and Axel's father is leading those rogues. Then he comes home to find his sister has been cursed by a demon blood witch. That means he only has less than a month to either find a witch to cure her, kill the witch who cursed her which will turn him rogue, or watch his sister die. Alex has no intention of watching his sister die.

Loved the concept and the back story which was revealed in bits and pieces throughout the novel. The heat factor is pretty high and Lyon does a great job writing the growing tension and eventual sex scenes. The only thing I wanted more of was answers. Okay, and smoother shifting of scenes and relationship building and just general plot unfolding. I do plan to buy "Soul Magic" which is scheduled to release in Nov2009 as I'm interested to see where Jennifer Lyon's goes next with this world and if she can sustain my interest.

Blood Magic by Jennifer Lyon is the first book in a new Paranormal Romance series. This series has good earth witches, bad demon witches and Wing Slayers. Wing Slayers all start out as witch hunters (not a good name) who protect good witches, but if they kill any witch they turn rogue. A curse has messed up the purpose of all the characters, but Axel and Darcy are the H/h, who can break the curse and help the other earth witches and Wing Slayers find their soul mirrors. Does this not sound like a hot mess or like a mash up of other paranormal series?
The world-building is spread out in the book which should make you want to read on to find out more secrets, but it makes it slow in places and repetitive in others. The difficulties between the H/h could have been solved by just speaking to each other and sharing info. This is a romance tool which should be used sparingly, not the balance of the book. In my opinion, this is an attempt to stand out with a new spin on a paranormal romance, but it doesn’t hit the mark for me.

Love this series! It's been fun doing a reread and reconnecting with all my favorite characters. Axel started my Wing Slayer obsession! I want everyone else to read the book and understand myobsession. The Wing Slayer series is a hot paranormal romance series with protective alpha males and their witches. I'm so excited Jennifer Lyon picked up the series again and decided to self publish it. If you're a fan of the series you can tell all your friends about the re-release! They're cheaper and have all new covers. I've been gifting copies of book 1 to friends becauseit's only $0.99 (update it's now free). New books are releasing as well so fans can read the stories they've been waiting for. It's awesome! I sound fangirlish in this review but it's fangirl worthy. Trust me! Go get them!

Wow I really liked this book. Cant wait to get my hands on the next one. All the side characters were wonderful. Cant wait to read about them.

So this is about Axel a wing slayer hunter.Axel needs a witch to help save his little sister. Yeah he goes about it in a bad way. But things worked out.Poor Darcy is just confused about why Axel needs her and Axel doesn't really believe anything she says. Man is he hot! At first he had that asshole vibe going on. I mean he was by the end still bossy and possessive but toned it down some for Darcy. For me this was great plenty action. Lots of pulling at the heart strings and some seriously good lovin. Axel's little sister Hannah was so darn cute! I loved how he was willing to do anything to save her. The emotions between Axel and his mom Eve. I loved how Darcy just fit in even though at times they all had their doubts. Joe Darcy's cousin was simply wonderful. Man I loved him! Im not sure if he will get a book. Since he is human but I hope that at least he is in the rest of the books.

Overall I can see this series being a new favorite of mine.

What the...? My main hang up about this book was that the hero and his merry band of knife wielding warriors is that they were complacent about rogues killing ALL witches! Not only demon ones but the good ones too. The hero has witnessed his father killing witches when he was 14 and hasn't done a thing to stop him! Plus the fact his father is a threat to his own family. I just can't get past that, they were hanging onto their souls by doing nothing. They even allowed rogues into their nightclub! And the hero just now realized that rogues are hurting mortals too? That maybe he should be doing something about it? Blegh. Not very heroic.

I could go on and on but it'll just gives me a headache.
Heroine wasn't very interesting. She kinda annoyed me with her waffling. And this whole convoluted "do I trust him? But eeekkkk he wants to kill me and dance in my blood" or the "But she's a witch?! I don't want to be witch-whipped and it'll be mighty inconvenient if I kill her and not save my poor poor sister buuuttt I really wanna do her!" PFFT. Yawn.

Review closer to release date.

I have read many books by Jennifer Lyon, this is the first paranormal that I have read by her. It definitely was a different take on the Witch Hunter story, I liked it. There were parts that were a bit slow but since it's the first it goes into more detail of the characters.Looking forward to the next.

"I love you, Axel! Please, please, you have to believe I wouldn't do anything to hurt you." - Darcy McAllister

Oh, wow, what did I just read?! I'm a fan of PNR and witches and stuff, but this went well beyond my expectations!

Darcy McAllister thought her childhood was tough. With everyone around her - her own adoptive father included - fearing her and calling her the spawn of evil, a freak, she believed this was as ugly as it could get. But she was dead wrong. Hunters are after her - witch hunters. Finding out she's actually a witch is shocking enough - being taken as a hostage under the pretense of being protected by one of them is seriously terrifying. But Axel Locke claims to be different. That his team has not surrendered to the curse compelling witch hunters to spill witch blood - yet. Can she trust this man to keep her safe, even when she knows he's only doing it so she can save his sister from a demon witch's death mark? Worse, can she keep away from bonding with him, when everything on Axel's being makes her want to do just that?

I simply loved this story! Not only was it something I haven't read as a concept yet, it was hot and funny and witty - yet made me wanna curl in a corner and cry at the same time. It had tons of suspense, action, romance and tension. Dialogues that touch the reader emotionally and pull at one's heartstrings - either in a good, or bad way.

But, most of all, it had a promising cast of characters that makes you want to come back and see them again. Even if you know that, for such a thing to happen, they'll probably be in danger...

I think this is the first time that the male lead has to try extra hard to keep himself from trying to kill the female lead. Not because of personal reasons - though there were plenty of those - but because he was cursed to that state. And that was new. And original. Giving the main plot of the book so much more suspense and meaning!

On the other hand, the female lead started as a weakling - and rightfully so. The poor woman was scared out of her wits, and everyone was out to get her when she barely even understood what was going on. But Darcy was stronger inside than that. She hit rock bottom, and from there, she gave a push downwards, and started climbing back up, even higher than where she previously stood. She exhibited a brilliant case of personal growth, which is rare in today's books. She became stronger, more determined, and sassier, and gave back as good as she got.

Now all this is good and wonderful, but there was one problem which cost this story the 5th star: Axel! Yes, he was hot. And funny at times. Sweet - if the day was a really good one and you prayed to God passionately that no stray sunray would piss him off.

Fine, fine, I'll stop. Jeez...

Seriously, though, Axel was everything I would not want in a man - attractive but an ass. He treated Darcy like an animal, kept making her feel inferior, and generally acted in a way that, had I been in Darcy's shoes, I would have asked for intense psychotherapy and/or possible medication.

What's worse? The woman ended up believing all that, and acted in the worst way I could imagine even when she had started gaining a voice of her own and some backbone: she revered to being that caged animal he had made her into every time he was in the same building with her. She acted like a victim! And it kept breaking my heart how ruthlessly that man went on breaking whatever was left - from her adoptive father's abuse, her real father's hatred, and a whole community after her head - intact in her. And all that, despite the strength she showed and how loyal and kind she was.

But I managed to hold my tears, and waited. Because the story was good. Because it was worth it to give it a shot until the very last page, despite how much my stomach churned and I wanted to sob and break down after puking my guts out from the misery. Yes, I felt Darcy's misery as my own. And she didn't deserve it. No one should ever feel the way she did, no one should actually believe that they're a freak, an animal worthy only to be used and then locked up. An abomination.

You see, in her own way, Jennifer Lyon showed us something that has been taking place in a larger scale for as long as society remembers. The only difference is the lack of magic in real life. So yeah, that right there was the major example - apart from Darcy's growth - that she knows how to write, and how to do it good!

Still, I'm not heartless. And I do admit, I am pretty sensitive to some matters. So the tears was a sure thing, I just didn't know when they would come without me being able to stop them. Right after the ritual on the beach, they came - and boy was it hard. I had to take a break every other paragraph, trying to take deep breaths and calm the sobs down, and yet I couldn't. I swear to God, Axel, I wanted to destroy you at that moment!!!

Coming to a conclusion, despite my intense... let's call it dislike, yeah, of Axel, I think this was an all-around awesome book! Not only a hands-down, cry-but-want-more story, but also an addicting start to what looks like a seriously unique and breathtaking series. If you're not afraid of emotional roller coasters, feels that will leave you hiccuping to recover from the sobbing tantrums, and plot twists up to there, I say you should get your hands on it. It's definitely a read that will remain unforgettable!

"You are my gift, Darcy. I love you and I will continue to love you for eternity. Always remember that." - Axel Locke

So, we get Darcy and Axel (and every time I read "Axel" I pictured Axel Rose or Eddie Murphy in Bev. Hills Cop, but anyway...). Darcy is an earth witch and Axel is a cursed witch hunter. Totally forumlaic in nature - they are cursed, can't be together, have wicked sex and can't keep their hands off each other afterwards and call that love, big battle, one rejects the other and then the paranormal causes them to see they are destined to be together forever. I'd say that is a spoiler, except if you read anything regularly in this genre, I gave absolutely nothing away.

I was excited to read something about a different aspect of the paranormal (versus the werewolf and vampire). Although I can only take so much when it comes to references about chakras (why the Alyson Noel Immortal Series took a serious turn for the worse at book 4). Luckily, the mysticism behind it all was limited.

The curse that set this whole book up threw me though. First, why would there be witch hunters in the first place - maybe it was a terminology thing, but if the original purpose of the witch hunters was to protect them, why were they called "witch hunters" from the beginning? I also am a little tired of feeling like the authors in this genre simply steal from one another. Shades doomed to walk the earth without their souls and that would be terribly painful - we haven't seen that too often (she says sarcastically). And a curse that requires sex to take the edge off (again... in law school plagiarism was an offense punishable by keel hauling. Ok, I exaggerate. But only a little. But I have felt lately while reading this genre that I am getting a course in how to plagiarize.)

And then there are the tattoos. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em (even have some ink myself), but why is it in this genre the tattoos are always sort of alive? Who is this tattoo artist, and how do I get an appointment, so that I can get some ink with magical properties?

And then back to the curse itself. Why would demon witches want to curse the hunters so that all other witches were killed. From a plot perspective, this wasn't really ever explained so that I totally understood it. I had to give up on the understanding and just go with it. And I hate it when I need to do that - totally sucks some of the enjoyment out of reading books like that. When the plot isn't carefully enough planned for me to understand and carry that forward and start to have little "ah-ha!" moments while reading, I feel gipped. And while I love a good mystery - even one that crosses multiple books in a series - what the heck made a witch a demon witch, wasn't really integral to the plot and could have been explained much earlier. Then I wouldn't have felt so disappointed when I found out (my thought was "that's it? Is that really what I have been waiting to find out?").

Finally, while I know there is another book after this, I am wondering how far this series will go. I like the serial para-romance stuff. Seems like we could get a number of books out of this - Sutton, Key, Ram and others (maybe there will be more to Joe too, in a sort of Butch/JR Ward kinda way). Maybe some of my complaints are really a reflection of my inability to find any info if this book will go beyond a 2-parter and much of it was a set up for the next book(s). For example, we get the sense that the demon Asmodeus is really important - he was involved in the spell gone wrong and the curse, but we see a door literally shut him out at the end and then the focus is put back on Quinn and Reed (sorry, 2 big-wig rogue witch hunters) and we hear no more about him. That was sort of a let down as there is a lot of paranormal possibility in his involvement. But again, maybe that's for later books.

On the positive note, I liked the idea of the Wing Slayer (tempered by the notion I mentioned earlier about needing hunters - or slayers - who are supposed to protect the witches) and the tapestry and the lore about how a witch gets her spells was interesting. It was fun to see the "Crone" manipulate technology and Eve and Hannah were great additional characters. I will read the next one, but will be hoping for a little more planning with the plot and hope that if the next is the last, I feel a little more satisfied. Finally, turning to the heart of this genre - the steaminess (I think I need to create my own scale for my reviews of these books...) was good. It was a little repetitive at times - taking away from how steamy it could have been. But it was enough to make me a little pink in the cheeks at times. So - good, but not really juicy. It was also a really quick read - 4 hours - for those that are looking for something light and quick, with some semi-steamy scenes.

With a great cast of characters and an interesting storyline, BLOOD MAGIC was a fast paced read that was easy to enjoy from front to back.

Darcy has always felt different and the night she's attacked she finds out why. She has a really hard time believing that she is a witch, but she can't deny it for long. She doesn't appreciate being kidnapped, but she wants to help Axel's little sister and she also wants to learn what she can really do. I thought she was a pretty strong individual considering what she was going through. She didn't sit in the corner and cry, she did what she needed to do.

It took me a bit to get a good feel for Axel. I could FEEL his struggle with his curse and the pull he had to Darcy. He wants her to save his sister, but I really felt that he wanted to be saved too and he just didn't know it. He has a really hard time trusting his feelings as well as Darcy since she is a witch, but he does pursue his feelings for her and when they are together, they make a really good team.

I truly enjoyed reading BLOOD MAGIC and thought that the introduction to the world and characters of the Wing Slayer series was well executed. I really liked getting to know both the main characters as well as the secondary characters. You could tell that they were all going to be important to the series and I definitely have a few that I want to read more about. I look forward to reading book two!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This book was the absolute perfect blend of paranormal fanasty and steamy romance. It has just the right amounts of magic, darkness and heat to make it a winning trifecta.

The author really made this novel stand out against the crowd of all these junk paranormal romances that are flooding this genre. It wasn't just a skeevy porno with paranormal characters - She made sure to actually have an intense storyline with interesting characters and a sparks flying romance added in.

I'd recommend this book to almost anyone!

Disappointed. I wanted to like this, but this was so unoriginal and silly.
Throw in a lot of sex and some totally stupid drama.

The story reminded me very strongly of Diane Duvall's immortal series.

This has less character and more sexy times.

Didn't help a lot.

I could rant for half an hour what put me off, but really, it just wasn't good and I had to fight to finish it. I skimmed the big showdown in the end...says all.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I found it ok to read, maybe a little slow at times as being book 1 there is a bit of world building. Why the three stars, well I'm really not a big 'witch story' fan (tried a few but they never seem to hold my interest, I think the whole spell stuff bores me), but it was a freebie and I wanted something different so why not. The synopsis sounded unique and the price was right!
I had a few issues with the curse, seemed like the hunters had it worse with the whole bloodlust and turning rouge thing then the witches, a bit unfair but I guess the rouges hunting ALL witches evened it out a bit. I understand the blood lust but I got over the H wanting to either kill or have sex with her, wow not exactly a turn on, kill or sex.
It seemed a bit hard to accept that the h didn't know about being a witch all her life but then is expected to get up to speed with her powers and cure a curse in a short time frame, hhmmmm ok.
Overall I didn't hate the book and it had good parts, there wasn't chapters and chapters of detailed spells and there was the other warriors, would like to meet a few of them, not sure if I'll continue with the series????

Time is running out for Axel to save his sister and he might be forced to do something drastic in order to save her. Darci is a witch who doesn't know what she was born as. They have a connection but there are a LOT of people who opposed their union and want to kill Darci. Its an engaging story with a good plot. I enjoyed this read :)

4.5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was exactly what a paranormal romance should be with the perfect blend of romance and all the other paranormal stuff without taking away from the romance. The romance was front and center between witch Darcy and witch hunter Axel, but had that great element of suspense thrown in there that added intensity and edge to their romance. They had this great enemies to lovers vibe going on at first with lots of denial between them even through there was a stellar pull between them that kept drawing them together. As they got to know each other and got closer, the intensity of their connection drew them even more towards each other. So many things were thrown in their way as the set of the hunt to save Axel’s sister Hannah from the death curse that only a witch could remove. So, they had to team up and work together to get it done. There was great sexual tension and head butting moments between them. I loved their journey to happily ever after. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it in the end.

Another interesting thing about this story was that Darcy didn’t know she was a witch, adding even more conflict to the situation. It was interesting to see her learn about the world of witches and witch hunters that she never knew existed until that very moment. Despite the fact that she knew that she wasn’t quite normal when she was child, she still had no idea that she was witch or magic even existed. Just seeing her process it and go through learning how to open up her magic and use it was very interesting. I love that part of her journey.

I will say that in the beginning, there was a lot of world building with rules and species and mythology and stuff like that. It got a little confusing and sometimes it got contradictory. For example, on page it said that Axel wasn’t a witch hunter yet because he didn’t kill a witch and loose his soul, but then on the next page it did say he was a witch hunter, but he just didn’t go rouge yet because he hadn’t killed a demon witch yet. So, I had to pause and kind of take a step back as I tried to figure out what was the truth and what was not. Eventually figured it out, but my head did spin with all that information.

At the end, I did feel like it dragged on for a bit especially after the climax with the sister had already happened. I thought that was going to be the finish of the story, but it wasn’t, and it kept going. I get why because it was a little bit of a loose thread going on, but I think I could have dealt without it. Yes, it set up for more books in the series, and it did finish all the storylines in the book, but I just felt like the story already ended. I felt like it was a little unnecessary.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book. It hit a lot of my boxes. I felt this was the format that I wanted from a paranormal romance unlike recent paranormal reads where I felt like the paranormal took over the romance. I want the romance to be the main focus and that’s what happened here between Axel and Darcy. They had really good chemistry, great sexual tension, and lots of passionate a scenes. I loved the whole soul mirror thing that added to this intense connection that they had. I loved the whole hawk thing. I loved the gestures that each made. It made me tear up a bit especially when their last encounter didn’t go exactly well. It just touched me because finally Darcy had got what she was looking for all her life. I loved that. Plus it was a sucker punch moment. I can see myself reading this one again. That’s how much I enjoyed it.

So I enjoyed this book, there was some cool paranormal elements and I thoughts both the main characters were pretty cool. Plus like the BDB there is obviously a set up for more novels to follow within the same group of guys.

BUT, I would never recommend this book to anyone without a laundry list of warnings. It's all here folks, tons of violence against women, squicky blood stuff, crazy possessive alpha male behavior, the list goes on and on. Hell the dude one time even tells the chick he both wants to bang her and cut her open, I mean WTF?!?!?! Still, if you have an open mind to dark fantasies and aren't easily triggered it can be a fun read. But be forewarned!

I already have the next few books so I'll probably check them out and from now on I'll know what I'm getting into.

I thought it was okay. I liked everything about the story except for the main dude, Axel. Oh man, he was such an overbearing, arrogant, macho, caveman type. He was definitely a Debbie downer and I did not like him one bit. The whole time I read his parts of the story I kept thinking, "me cave man, me horny, hot girl, MINE!" He was so possessive, I really did not like it at all. I'm glad Darcy put him down a peg or two because I was seriously ready to throw my book across the room. I might continue the series since it's about new characters. We'll see...

Darcy and Axel

Both have destinies that contraindicate any sort of future yet they they seem to be drawn to one another. A curse brings them together but it may also end their lives. Excellent story.
