Becky Vollmer's You Are Not Stuck is a blend of straight talk, humor, and clear steps for action to help change-seekers reset their priorities, drown out the naysaying voices in their heads, and make bold choices.
We all feel stuck in our jobs, our relationships, our habits, or when the life we’re living simply doesn’t add up to the one we want. We feel stuck when it seems like we don’t have options, or when we don’t trust or allow ourselves to make the changes we so deeply long to make.
Speaker and yoga teacher Becky Vollmer believes that, when we feel paralyzed by our fears, the answer isn’t just courage―it’s choice. Because we all have choices, we just have to be brave enough to make them.
You Are Not Stuck is the key to breaking the cycle of fear and making bold choices for real change. Sometimes this transformation looks like an audacious Thelma and Louise -style leap; more often, though, it is a series of small, deliberate actions based on personal values that yield more clarity, alignment, and, ultimately, long-term contentment than driving off a cliff.
If what you seek is a tried-and-true process of empowerment that unlocks the true north already inside you, look no further. This book is a unique blend of permission and spirituality that will help you excavate your divine inner badass, close the gap between intention and action, and develop a strategic path forward that’s as unique as your thumbprint.
Through warm and straightforward wisdom, a modern and approachable take on ancient yoga philosophy, a series of practical and insightful grounding exercises, and a healthy dose of laugh-out-loud humor, you’ll learn how to make soul-guided choices in support of the life you’ve desired all along.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advanced reader copy. The opinions expressed are mine alone.
For me, “You Are Not Stuck wasn’t quite the encouragement I was hoping it would be. The farther into the book I got, the less I was excited about the ideas the author was suggesting. But, this may because it felt like 2/3 of the book focused heavily on yoga (which I have nothing against) and the idea that you could sort of “create your own religion. The author did say this wasn’t for everyone and that some people find great comfort and solace in organized religion but after the chapter that focused on that heavily I wasn’t as into the book. I’ll admit that I only skimmed the remaining chapters because I lost interest.
I did appreciate the idea that we should give ourselves permission to make a change in our lives as I think that’s the biggest reason we feel stuck. I also appreciated that at the end of each chapter there were thought provoking questions for you to think, write or talk about.
All in all, I felt like the book was kinda long and repetitive, and as a Christian I didn’t like some of the religious ideas put forth. I also had difficulty relating to some of the situations and stories highlighted in the book. But I acknowledge that for some, this book might be just what they need.
This book really spoke to me at a time when I was feeling completely stuck and overwhelmed. One of the things I liked most about it was the way it helped me break down an overwhelming process into manageable decisions, that when put together, made me able to move forward. It asks good questions and it was organized in a way that kept me from freaking out and giving up. I also really liked the tone of the book - a good blend of hard earned wisdom, kindness, honesty and a little humor.
I don’t typically read these types of books but I received it in the mail and thought I’d give it a try. I found it to be okay, not really for me. Even though I do struggle with certain issues the author touched upon I didn’t find this book to be very helpful and that’s totally okay. These books definitely aren’t for everyone. I do hope you read this one and it is able to help you or you atleast find it interesting. I will say, I did enjoy the writing and the author did make me laugh a few times.
Thank you so much for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
With openness, compassion and earned optimism, Becky Vollmer guides us out of paralysis into action, reminding us that stuck is a state of mind, and that choice is where our real power lives. For anyone needing to make a change in their lives but not sure how to begin, get this energizing and important book immediately and let Becky hold your hand as you discover just how ready and powerful you are.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this arc which made my day! Becky Vollmer writes each page with realistic situations and emotions. She offers true reasoning of why one might feel a certain type of way and how to change that thinking pattern. I have recommended this book to anyone that will listen. Excellent read, and note what she says about procrastination; her statement is 100% true!
This book was incredible from the first to the very last page. I absolutely loved it especially for its reliance on wisdom from yoga and meditation. “The best thing you can possibly do with your life is to tackle the motherfucking shit out of it. That’s the spirit and quote that encapsulates the energy and spirit of this incredible book. MUST read for self development and happiness.
This book is about how to move past mental blocks, feelings of hopelessness, and situations that make you unhappy.
I thought that it was pretty good overall. For the most part, it was pretty engaging and I only have a couple of complaints. Like maybe the author could criticize certain Christians without bashing the entire religion and ideals behind it so many times. Certain parts also seemed to drag on too long but I just skimmed through them.
Other than that, the author has a pretty likable personality and solid advice. If you're feeling stuck in life, it's worth giving it a read!
In 2014 Becky Vollmer launched You Are Not Stuck, running workshops, online courses and retreats. Having quit her uninspiring corporate job after realizing she could choose something else, she made it her mission to explore the fears we have about change and share her ideas about what we can do to choose with our hearts. Through her journey for authenticity, Vollmer became a yoga student, then a yoga instructor, and yoga informs her philosophy.
You Are Not Stuck is about giving yourself permission to quit, to change, and to finally live in alignment with your evolving values. Vollmer is all about finding this alignment for yourself, whatever that looks like.
With humor, Vollmer opens up your world to the reality of choices. She urges you to “choose from your soul, not from your fear.
The book works as a foundation for developing your own playbook for getting unstuck. That’s so important because, yes, you can want to change, but first you need a plan! This playbook is designed by you, and Vollmer calls it “your integrity on paper
I love that each chapter ends with a closing exercise, so get out your journal and be ready for some excavation.
As Vollmer says, “choice starts with acknowledging that the life you’re living does not line up with the life you want. This dissonance can point you in the direction that your soul truly wants to go towards.

Becky Vollmer was not happy. She was working long hours in public relations, raising two kids, skating through her marriage, and drinking way too much. She was fried, and she didn’t like herself very much. She felt like her time was just slipping away, and that was time with her children that she’d never get back. And she felt like she didn’t have a choice. She felt trapped, in a prison of her own choices. She was stuck.
Vollmer chose a different path for herself. She had been a yoga student for 20 years, so she leaned into that, into the learning she carried in her muscles and in her soul. She realized that the life she was living didn’t align with her values, so she quit her job and created a life that would align with her inner truths. And now she helps others find their paths toward a more fulfilling life because, as she says, You Are Not Stuck.
Layered with a lot of personal stories, advice from other well-known inspirational writers, and tough (but compassionate) love, the book encourages readers to be honest with themselves about the areas of their lives that aren’t working and to be brave and make changes. She gives people permission to change their lives, to find something better, to take risks.
Vollmer understands that it’s not all unicorns and puppies when you start making these types of choices in your life. For her, her marriage fell apart not long after she quit her job and tried to make choices that came from her soul. It was devastating, but because she’d been taking care of herself, she could face her new circumstances and move forward with her first husband in a way that she felt protected their children from as much pain as possible.
It’s not easy to change your life. Even if you want to with all your heart, it takes stamina and heart and resources. And even with all that, you’ll still have to face your fears, your shame, and that voice in your head that loves to remind you of all the reasons you will fail. But Vollmer herself has made it through, and she can guide you through the pitfalls to the soul-driven life you’ve been craving.
The audio book of You Are Not Stuck is narrated by the author, so Vollmer is telling her story in her own words. She is sharing her own struggles and passions, so it feels very personal to listen to this book. She is a good teacher, using her own vulnerability and her successes to encourage others to find their own paths. There were times with the audio book that it felt a little slow, a little overly dramatic, but mostly it just felt like an older sister giving me really good life advice.
I liked You Are Not Stuck. It has smart ideas for moving forward and offers emotional support for the tough parts of the journey. I like that Vollmer has gone through it herself and figured out what worked for her. It made her advice feel authentic. And I liked that she included words of wisdom from many other authors.
I think that those looking for a way to change their life, a way to reconnect with their souls, will find help in this book. However, as the author herself admits, she comes at her advice and experience through the lens of a white woman in middle America who grew up middle class, so she doesn’t address struggles that could affect those of a different race, culture, class, any other distinctions, which might make a difference for some readers.
A copy of the audio book for You Are Not Stuck was provided by Macmillan Audio through NetGalley, but I bought the ebook myself.
I was pleased to read this book during the transition from one year to the next. It fell into my 'library cart' when I reserved "Die With Zero" along with "Happier Hour". Each seems to hold a piece of the puzzle I'm always looking to solve...how to live in accordance with my values, be bolder and craft a meaningful life that is wholly mine.
Becky Vollmer sees money, time and energy as the currencies of life. That made this a great companion to those other two books that deal with spending money and time wisely...completing the trilogy with a discussion of where to devote my energy!
I couldn't relate to the author's opening chapter...she was drinking to excess and finally realized she needed to find new patterns. However, I could relate to her religious outlook - god within and god around + Self, Spirit, Soul, Source. The author gave a nice rundown of the 8 limbs of yoga, reminding me of my love of yoga, which I had shelved for a newfound morning meditation practice. Going forward, I'm incorporating both sitting meditation ~and~ yoga movements for a more balanced morning routine.
Vollmer states that liminal space - the time in between - requires extra self awareness and self care. Her chapter devoted to self care was top notch. Perhaps it was speaking to the choir, as I already embrace several of the Seven Essential Practices she suggests to make life easier... 1) movement & breath (see above) 2) mindfulness & meditation (ditto) 3) letting go [Buddhist tenets of impermance, non-attachment, acceptance, contentment] 4) cultivating emotional intelligence (stay tuned to GoodReads for an upcoming review) 5) therapy 6) journaling (I've been journaling with my husband for over 30 years!) 7) comfort & rest
I wholeheartedly believe what Vollmer says about asking for help... "Those who ask without fear learn to say two things: 1) I deserve to ask 2) you are welcome to say no
As a personal takeaway, I will assess areas of my life where I'd like to ask for help and/or outsource expertise. I'll continue to journal about bold choices and changes that I can make to live more fully into my Self.
If you find yourself at a point where you’re looking for change or a new direction, pick up this helpful guide.
"Why should we tolerate a diet of weak poisons, a home in insipid surroundings, a circle of acquaintances who are not quite our enemies, the noise of motors with just enough relief to prevent insanity?" "Who would want to live in a world which is just not quite fatal?" -,
I've been following Becky Vollmer's Facebook page for nearly a decade. I finally read her book in 2023. Other than my lack of yoga enthusiasm, I found the book refreshing, down to earth, humorous, straightforward and helpful. Related recommended books: by Jen Sincero and works by Brene Brown.
Favorite Passages: Introduction Permission to quit, to change, to live in alignment with priorities that had evolved as I had evolved, to redefine what success looked like for me . . . ______
. . . we all have choices; we just have to be brave enough to make them. _______
Thank God my husband had a less demanding schedule at the time and liked to cook, because kids can't eat conference calls. _______
"You're not drinking alone, are you?" she asked worriedly. "Of course not," I said. "The cats are here!" _______
(Though I do remember a particularly drunken holiday party soon after coming back to work from maternity leave, during which I pulled a milk-full breast out of my dress and squirted a male colleague across the bar. Talk about an assault! Facepalm.) _______
Not. Quite. Fatal. Zing. That's a space I lived in for years, thinking it was acceptable, somehow, because I knew it could have been worse, because other people had it worse. And who was I to want better when life wasn't great but it wasn't quite killing me, either? Then I realized: when you're not quite dead, you're not quite alive, either.
I love, love, love this book! Encouraging. Empowering. Transformative. This is one of those gems that I find myself repeatedly reflecting on and plucking back off the shelf. I first met Becky back in 2021 when I was newly sober and new to the world of modern recovery spaces. She immediately stood out as a guiding light while I began the complex process of healing, growth and integration. Three-plus years later, Becky's heart, humor and sage wisdom continue to be vital to my daily life and overall journey. To me, "You Are Not Stuck" is two-fold in its magic: it is practical in the sense that it invites one to get clear on their life, values, goals, fears and roadblocks before mapping out specific, action-oriented steps to better live in alignment, AND it's a breathtakingly honest and relatable read that leaves one feeling witnessed, understood and supported. The audible version of this book is fantastic (narrated by Becky herself), but every word in the written version strikes me as Becky's genuine voice right there on the page, too. This is a human who writes as she speaks, speaks as she lives, and lives as she believes. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone longing to reconnect with their true inner Self and intentionally live out a more rewarding and authentic life.
“We all have choices, we just need to be brave enough to make them.
Everyone has felt like they’ve been stuck from time to time. Stuck in their job, stuck in a bad relationship, stuck with habits you don’t want for yourself. You Are Not Stuck was a great reminder that not only are you indeed not stuck, but you also are not alone in those feelings.
There wasn’t a whole lot of original information in this book, and as someone who has read a lot of personal development books, I recognized a lot of the references that Becky made. Although it was a lot of regurgitated information, it was all said in a way that was really engaging. Becky was exceptional with the narration of her audiobook and I ended up listening to the entire thing in a day. I didn't resonate with the chapter going indepth about yoga or her experience with religion, but I loved the exercises and journal prompts at the end of each chapter. This would be a great one to pick up if you’re just getting into personal development books!
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this audiobook! 3.5 stars
Thank you St Martin's Essentials for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
You are not stuck is a story based self help book. Becky Vollmer pulls from her life experience to help her readers feel inspired to get unstuck from the places they feel stuck in their lives. She teaches a lot of different ways to figure out what you want out of life. Becky wants to empower everyone to figure out what they want most out of life and reach for it. She wants her readers and others to break the cycles of fear and make bold choices for real change in their lives. This is a great read for those that find they have different coping mechanisms that are unhealthy and want to change those habits. I personal did not get a whole lot out of this story. I do not have habits like that that I want to change. I like my life, however, I thought there is always something to learn. This story just felt like a autobiography more than a self help book in my opinion.

You Are Not Stuck: How Soul-Guided Choices Transform Fear into Freedom by Becky Vollmer Narrated by Becky Vollmer Publisher: Macmillan Audio Genre: Self-Help Published: January 3, 2023
You Are Not Stuck by Becky Vollmer must read for anyone who feels stuck! Yes, at times, it can feel a little 'woo' but it is so spectacular! This is the book to keep nearby to re-read the parts when you need them most!
The narration by the author! I felt like I was listening to an old friend! She came across as sincere and relatable!
I thought this book was everything I needed right now. There is so much connection between the mind and how the body reacts and the section about breathing was on point for me.
I highly recommend reading this book! The author has a familiar and friendly style that made the book feel less heavy, but no less powerful. There is amazing stuff in here!!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"You are Not Stuck: How Soul-Guided Choices Transform Fear Into Freedom", by Becky Vollmer, is a fun and transformative self-help book. Vollmer defines feeling stuck as the following: "We feel stuck when the life we're living doesn't line up with the life we want. We feel stuck when it seems like we don't have opinions. We feel stuck when we don't trust ourselves, or allow ourselves, to make the changes we so deeply long to make." The author splits this book into several sections as she walks you through understanding the feeling of being stuck, to moving towards making fearless choices, to taking action in your new plan.
I felt there were some portions of this book that were helpful, but Vollmer (in my opinion) realizes too heavily on her yoga practices and New Age meditations to make it practical. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Permission to change your mind? Permission to turn a full life 180? Permission to get quiet and listen to your soul? Permission to rest?!
Yes. We shouldn't need permission right? But sometimes a nudge or someone to set the example helps. This book could be for you about a huge life altering change or just a tweak to your habits and self-care. It meets you where you are. The author's humbling honesty about her own life's journey reminds the reader the importance of grace for oneself. Her voice is light-filled and humorous- like having a bubbly BFF riding shotgun dropping f-bombs and truth-bombs along the way.
It's chock-full of great information and doorways into practices and philosophies that will serve well for a long time.
I'm so glad I won this book on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ! This is one of those books that will always be helpful regardless of whatever situation you may find yourself in. I just loved Ms. Vollmer's style and I look so forward to reading more from her. I've already passed it on to my husband! We are going through a tough time right now regarding the upcoming demise of one of our much-loved furbabies. This book came at the right time for me, it was just what I needed to help me better deal with the situation, we have beaten cancer once and now Zoe the Wonder dog is up for another battle with the ugly "C" word. I highly recommend this book!
I received an electronic ARC from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Vollmer presents her ideas on how to make choices and changes to move your life in a different direction and find contentment. She sets her plan out in three parts - why, what, how to change. I appreciate the nine steps she shares in this process and the encouragement she offers in each chapter. However, the heavy emphasis on yoga and the attack on some faiths spoke against her point to be open to what works for each person. This is a book to go back to and reference when evaluating your life and what is not longer working in it.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for this arc in exchange for an honest review. This book is about giving yourself permission to make choices and changes to your life and be happy with those decisions. The reader is provided with nine steps to encourage you to change your life. This was a good read. You need to combine mindfulness, meditation, and journaling to see how to get unstuck and figure out what you really want. My favorite quote on the book “Choice starts with acknowledging that the live you’re living does not line up with the life you want.
This book was a gift when I really needed the message. I think often we don’t give ourselves permission to think and feel as purposeful as this book guides us to do. I feel a sense of empowerment after reading this book. It is a lot about yoga which I’ve tried a few times but see the benefits behind the practice and feel a calling to add that to my self care routine. Aside from the yoga there are exercises in the chapters that I did mentally but will go back and work through thoughtfully. I do recommend this book for anyone feeling stuck, uncentered or anxious in their current situation.
You Are Not Stuck is an interesting self help book that takes a lot of information from different sources and synthesizes it down into easy to understand chapters; plus takes a yoga spin on it all. I really enjoyed the layout and the writing, it was easy to keep attention and helpfully chunked down. Each section ends with a homework and to-do element that is reasonable. This is a good book for someone who just seems to have what they want but just still doesnt feel that contentment they expected.
This book was fantastic. The timing that it came into my life was perfect.
Becky approaches mindfulness with reality; an understanding of how hard things can be, how we may fail, and the steps that are included in the process in determining what you really want and getting out from what you THINK you are stuck under.
The narratives and examples included in the book really show that this book is for everyone, regardless of your circumstances, goals, etc.
I can't help but wonder if all of the glowing reviews here are from friends and family of the author? In a nutshell, this book is another white, middle-class mom saved by... spoiler alert... YOGA. The writing is overly wordy and the author comes across as rather pleased with herself for handling life's (white middle-class) hardships with such humor! And wit! I don't feel like this book is going to be helpful to anyone facing real adversity or true hardship in their life.
Well, consider me unstuck! I've been struggling with the feeling of being 'stuck' and not being able to move on from a point in my life. Reading this book has helped me put things into perspective and take effort into bettering myself. I'm incredibly glad that I read this book, and look forward to reading more from the author in the future!
Do you feel stuck, or unhappy with your life? Are you looking for a way to change, but have no idea where to start? If any of that is true, then you need this book! Becky Volmer has been there and done that. She will walk you through step by step on your path of discovery. I loved this book and will keep returning to it as things in my life change and I feel trapped again.
Nothing original here, just a recycled version of thoughts from other self-help books. Permission to quit? Seems irresponsible. Not sure that's helpful advice for people who don't have the luxury of walking away from a job. I'd love to see my husband's face when I tell him I'm quitting to go work part-time at the animal shelter, because that's what my "soul needs".
This beautifully written book is inspirational and in the ranks with Eat Pray Love, Untamed, and the Alchemist. Thank you for the inspiration, for insight to the Spirit within ones Self, for the grace, no filter, and for helping us all see the beauty in life. Can’t wait to read more of Becky’s work.
A beautiful look though how to utilize your inner light in life and how to make your life brighter. Pun intended. Highly recommend. Especially loved the reflection to true life to humanize my feelings and relate. I felt like this book was SPEAKING TO ME. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
