Misaki Ayuzawa is the President of the Student Council at Seika High School, formerly an all-boys school. Unfortunately, most of the students are still male and stuck in their slovenly habits, so man-hating Misaki really socks it to them in an attempt to make the school presentable to attract more female students. But what will she do when the sexiest boy in school finds out that after school, Misaki works in a maid cafe.

"Instead of being the pursued, I rather be the pursuer."

Rating: ????

?This review is spoiler-free?

This was the very first manga I have ever read and the one that got me into reading many other mangas afterwards. I was just a teenager when I first found this, completely by accident I might add, and I'm so glad I did. It has become a comfort for me, something to read when I want to cheer myself up or when I want to get out of a reading slump. I'm so excited I finally get to write a review for it.

Anyone who doesn't like this gem is a dummy. No doubt about it. Yes, I am prepared to fight for this. It is full of romance, humour, and delightfully ridiculous and feel-good moments. Even the bonus chapters were gold. It is easily one of the most adorable stories I've ever read. It leaves in my head rent-free and owns my heart unconditionally. No, I am not exagerating. I remember reading this while it was still ongoing and me going completely crazy waiting for the next chapter to come out. I can't tell you how thankful I am that you can find this manga online because I'm pretty sure I would still be reading it to this day. I still haven't managed to get the hard copies of all the volumes. They are unfortunately incredibly over-priced and there are so many of them. ??

Ayuzawa Misaki is one of my most beloved manga characters. She's such an amazing, badass main character. Insanely strong, independent, passionate, loyal, and the absolute cutest. Did I mention genius?? Because she is!! I could go on and on forever describing this queeeeen ?? It's no coincidence that everyone who meets her falls head over heels in love with her. She deserves the world and I would have given it all to her if Usui hadn't beat me to it ??

Speaking of Usui Takumi, the man of the hour, the perverted outer-space alien ??, he is also one of my most loved manga characters and has a permanent place in my heart and my fictional men list. And I'm not even into blonds most of the time. He's got that certain kind of charm that mesmerised me. ?? He is Misaki's equal in every way. Maayybe is a little better at times. ?? And the softer boi you'll ever meet. I had such a huge crush on him as a teenager. I mean have you seen him on the covers?? The same goes for Misaki by the way. She's a total knock-out, especially when she wears that maid outfit. So I guess they are yet another couple I'm totally crushing on. It's not my fault though. I never stood a chance.

Their torturously slow-burn romance was one of the purest, most adorable, feel-good, and frustrating ones I have ever come across. Not to mention all the top-tier tropes that went along with it. Grumpy-loves-sunshine, guy-falls-first, (sort of) hater-to-lovers, all of which are some of my favourites by the way. I've read this manga over a hundred times and I still squeal like a little girl every single time. At this point, I don't think I'll ever grow out of it. I'm twenty-five already and cannot stop doing that for the life of me ?? I live for those sweet moments between them. Oh, you should see them blush at one another. It's the cutest thing in the world.

However, while I love their love, I did find their dynamic a bit unbalanced, especially in the beginning. There was this idea that if a girl is strong, independent, and intelligent, by extension, she would be angry, violent and a man-hater as well. Whereas, a guy that was strong, independent, and intelligent was admirable and kind. While Usui was seen as this bigger-than-life guy that literally everyone admired and loved, Misaki was literally called 'The Demon President' and was both feared and hated by all the male students at the school. That never sat right with me and is the only reason this otherwise-beautiful manga isn't a full five stars.

If you think that the main characters are the only ones you will absolutely love, then you're absolutely wrong. Even the secondary characters are lovable. Every single one of them. Even those you don't quite like at first ?? There is honestly no character that I hate. Annoyed, maybe, but hate, absolutely not. Each one of them has their own special characteristic that makes me like them no matter what they do. Not to mention that they are all hilarious, too.

Thoughts on the anime:

The only thing I can say about this delightful anime is that those who decided to cancel it should be tried for being morons and making life-ruining decisions. No joke.

Authoritarian high school student council president Misaki Ayuzawa may lord it over the students at her male-dominated high school but she has a secret after-school job: cosplaying as a maid at a bar! Takumi Usui stumbles across her secret shame - will he reveal it to the school, undermining her position, and what will Misaki do to keep him from spilling?

It sounds salacious, even sleazy - it¡¯s not. It¡¯s perfectly safe for kids even, though that only makes it less interesting. The stakes seem a bit of a joke; like I don¡¯t think anyone finding out her part-time job will affect her high school presidency at all - in fact, a number of students find out and nothing happens!

And (Seinfeld voice) what¡¯s the big deal with being high school council president anyway?? It seems like she¡¯s just taking on more work when she¡¯s already got her plate full and it doesn¡¯t even pay! Then again it probably looks good on college applications. And maybe it¡¯s an outlet for her to get her own back on men/boys after pretending to be subservient in her maid job¡?

It turns out to not be the most compelling premise, compounded further by the fact that nothing much happens with it anyway so it¡¯s actually quite a boring read. The little comments scribbled outside of the word balloons got annoying fast and felt too busy and unnecessarily hyper. The art is typical manga - nowt special.

I liked the little bit of development at the end between the obvious soon-to-be relationship between Misaki and Takumi, and I would¡¯ve liked more on that in the book instead of the¡ nothing else we got instead! ¡ but I can¡¯t keep reading this series if the pace is gonna be this glacial. Maid-sama! sounded like a cute concept that might¡¯ve been a fun rom-com but Hiro Fujiwara¡¯s treatment unfortunately turns it into something flat and dull instead.

This is totally one of my favorite manga/anime of all times. It is so darn funny, I couldn't stop laughing(that was when I watched the anime).
Misaki, is a Student Council President, in Seika High, an all-boys school. She started hating guys when her dad left her family and left a huge debt, then she decided find a job and ended up working in Maid Latte as a maid. Takumi Usui takes an interest on her, becomes her stalker, after he founds out that she's a maid. Usui then develops feelings for Misaki. So does Misaki herself, but won't admit it.

I absolutely love this manga! SO MUCH! Hehe.
Usui and Misaki. They make such a perfect couple.
They're absolutely hilarious! :)
I love Usui! Perverted Alien!(called by Misaki), haha I love that guy.

I love the romance and the story thats in this manga. It is just absolutely incredible. I love how they were drawn. And I love Misaki's maid dress, it very much suits her.

If you like shoujo, romance, romantic comedy this manga is the one you have to read. You won't regret reading this. Absolutely Fantastico! :D

Girl Power!
The plot was okay but Misaki is amazing. This girl is kinda crazy, hard worker, dedicated and maybe too self-demanding. Her father abandoned the family cowardly so she has to work in a Maid Cafe to pay the bills. She thinks she will never trust the opposite sex again until she meets Usui *swoon* ...

Usui is hot. Very. He's mysterious, he's good at everything. He likes to keep to himself until he discovers Misa's secret. After that, he becomes this perverted alien, roof jumper, american captain and sweet guy who's willing to do anything to keep Mila's secret safe.

I'm just glad the two don't become a couple in the first 4 chapters. That's such a breath of fresh air. But seriously though, I hope male love interests stop pulling the girl closer to them while muttering cheesy lines. That's so... cringe-inducing. Seriously.

I have been going crazy with books recently because of the fact that I never get to read. So now, I am reading a bunch of different books at once so that I can catch up with everything. I am trying to catch up with Shadowhunter Academy, because Lady Midnight is going to come out, (tomorrow). And I am reading manga because I finished the anime and wanted to try reading manga. And I also have to finish reading my White Pine book. We are reading the Lord of the Flies in the class as well. I have so much reading to do. And I want to read but I never get time.

¡°The real battle starts now!¡±

This is a manga series about a girl named Misaki Ayuzawa who is the school president. She is a tough girl who knows how to take care of herself. But ever since her dad left, he left a huge debt he had to pay and Misaki's mom is working to pay it off. Misaki wanted to help her mother so she decided to start working. But she works in a Maid Restaurant and wants it to be kept a secret. But one day, Usui Takumi finds out that Misaki is a maid. Misaki and Usui form a frienemie relationship which makes their lives so much more interesting.

¡°I'm just a stalker.¡±

This manga is so hilarious, I love it so much. I want to say a huge thank you to my friend who recommended this manga reading app. That is where I do all of my manga reading and it is so convenient! Anyway, this manga is so funny and I laughed so much. I watched the anime so most of the things that happened in volume one were already in the anime episodes. But the jokes never got old so I was so happy that I read this!

The characters are all amazing, I love all of them. Misaki is one of those girls who are super brave and knows how to stand up for themselves. Usui is the overprotective, swoon-worthy guy and is the perfect person for Misaki. Usui is not only the smartest guy in the school, but also the most popular guy when it comes to girls. He is always worried about Misaki and it is the first time that someone took interest in her.

Misaki and Usui's bond is so different, it's one of the highlights in this book. The way they understand each other and trust each other. Even if Misaki isn't ready to admit it, it's nice to see how they communicate, I love it so much!

I highly recommend this to those who haven't tried reading manga yet, it is really fun to read. All the pictures are amazing and it may be confusing at first, but if you have a manga expert like my close friend, it's all good :) If you are a manga reader and haven't read this book yet, I highly recommend it. It is funny, heart-warming and beautiful!

Please read this!!!!!

Okay, I wanted to read some light hearted manga as I have really busy and stressful times nowadays. So I went for Maid sama! It was a recommendation from fellow otaku friend. So, let's get started to the very first impressions:
1. I liked characters a lot. Especially two main leads, Misaki and Usui.
Misaki is hard working, clever, strong and independent girl and school council president in mostly boys' school. She has one flaw though: she hates boys.
Usui is careless, intelligent, calm and laid back popular boy at school. He is also considerate that he didn't give out information about Misaki's working in a cafe. He has a flaw of being a stalker.
2. I liked the chemistry. Their snarky comebacks are very funny and cute. It really shows how they like each other.
3. I liked the art. It was fine. Though I didn't like how the texts were small in some places to read.
It is great to have a fun reading time and forget about responsibilities.

Review of the whole series:

I absolutely loved this manga and I'm not even a shoujo fan. There is something about a hardworking, righteous, independent, selfless and kick-ass female lead that makes me love a manga. Meet Misaki, the opposite of a typical Shoujo lead.

Are you tired of reading about the cocky, brash, loud mouthed, bad boy male MC who turns good because of the female MC? Meet Usui, the slight deviation of the cliched male Shoujo lead. Sure, he is tall, handsome, rich, popular, and has his eyes only on Misaki, as expected, but he is also mysterious, nice, intelligent and charming. He really does embody the knight in shining armor cliche, which I like. However, he has some stalking tendencies, which I don't like.

I'd recommend this manga if you are looking for a light, funny read with a dash of adorable romance and a horde of crazy situations.

1. Girl breaks metal and tears piercings out of bare skin. *feeling empowered hell yeah*

2. When will people accept that a dashing ravishing hot-n-cold charming jerk-with-heart-of-gold boy...

3. Is a dashing ravishing hot-n-cold charming jerk-with-heart-of-gold stalker/pervert. (yes, pervwrt because no, I do not approve of random boys lifting my skirt.)

4. I just don't grasp why I hate the animes/mangas everyone else adores/worships. Sigh.

5. Nope. One volume of stalking and tom-foolery is enough and more.

Okayokayokay, Usui is hot. Can't deny the idiot that. I just kind of hoped that those glasses in the vice-versa stalking chapter remained. He looked kinda cute in them. Okayokayokay he looked awfully cute in them. And yes 'cute' is a substitute for another word. Ahemahemahem.

I know that he is a stalker. But you know that I'm a girl. -.-;;

This is cute. I haven't read any manga to avoid the collector in me going completely out of control but I enjoyed this one as a first.

I'll read the rest of these soon, I think I need to be careful or else I'm going to get completely consumed by these books.

I FINALLY read the first volume Maid-Sama! because I was tired of seeing the hot takes and discourse about this series on Twitter without me being able to form my own opinion.

I'm unsure of where to start because based on this first volume, there were not the "red flags" I expected, especially in regards to Takumi, who I personally felt was AMAZING! I'm definitely #TeamTakumi officially even though I sadly don't plan to read future volumes.

While I enjoyed the story itself and the overall concept, Misaki's meanness/grumpiness really bothered me. It was hard for me to find myself fully engaged while reading when I didn't love her as a heroine. While I get WHY she acts the way she does, it didn't make me want to cheer for her or excuse her actions.

Despite that I am hugely bummed I didn't love this first volume, I'm definitely glad I gave this series a try! I may not have the best opinion on it since I'm sure some could argue I didn't read far enough into the series, but my goal was me in wanting to be able to have thoughts on it, and can officially say I do.

Plus, Takumi. That is all. <3

Oh my god.....this is so damn funny!! Misaki being the pres, and the three idiots, and the fighting, and last but not least.....USUI!! Oh my god, he's so sexy nad gorgeous! I love how's he's like this blunt, independent, careless, prefect guy!!! Yeah, and I saw this in anime...kawaii!!!!!!!! <3

I love how Misaki is independent. She acres for her sister and mother, works her ass off....oh my god, she's no joke. :o
But I don't like how she's too rough on boys, I think she should lay off with the screaming and the "beating the crap out of them" type of thing. Ok, I get it. Th guys are disrespectful, and so dirty. At least shoot them a stink-eye. She's kind of hype. And she only takes decisions coming from girls, and never leaves their judgement! Whaaat?!

And more Usui...gahhh! <3 I don't gush over blondes a lot..but he's an exception <3 Ok, so when he found out about Misaki being a maid, and you had this coming! he still has this "careless" expression! I couldn't help but laughing.

Oh Maid Sama!, I¡¯ve been waiting for this day. I started up a manga-reading project with Debby (Snuggly Oranges), Gillian (Writer of Wrongs) and Steph (Cuddlebuggery), and I¡¯m so glad that we did this, because I have got my manga back and you have NO idea how much I missed it. For a couple of years, I read a whole lot of manga (thousands of volumes is likely not an exaggeration) and I think I sort of burned myself out with that pace. Then I just got out of the habit of reading it. Now my mojo is back and I can finish some of the series that weren¡¯t complete back then, start new ones and reread my favorites. This, my friends, is a beautiful thing. Anyway, Maid Sama! is one I started reading from my library back in the day, but never finished because I was waiting for the next volume to be purchased by the library¡only apparently they never printed any volumes past that one so it¡¯s a good thing that I stopped waiting. Maid Sama! is a seriously fun series with delightful shippiness, and I am not just saying that because Debby might kill me otherwise. Oranges can be vengeful fruits.

NGL, my favorite thing in manga is a good ship. Okay, that¡¯s not THAT different from my preferences anywhere, but I think it may be even more important in shojo manga. I mean, if I am going to wait 10-18 volumes for a ship to pull away from the dock, it better be a damn gorgeous and sea worthy vessel, if you know what I mean. Maid Sama! has ships to spare. Literally, as, in addition to the main ship, which is quite shiny, there are awesome ships for the secondary characters.

Misaki, the heroine, is the student council president of her school, and known as the Demon President. Seika High School just recently allowed female students and Misaki is on a crusade to make the boys straighten up and fly right, so that the girls can feel more comfortable. Misaki dominates in strength and academics, but she has a secret: she works at a maid cafe (which is exactly what it sounds like unless you think that it¡¯s a cover for prostitution, which I would imagine is sometimes the case but is not here).

In the first volume, several people discover her secret, namely the guy who has just taken the top academic score from her and the three bad boys. Sacre bleu! It¡¯s okay though, because Misaki charms the pants off them (not literally, unfortunately) and her secret is safe. One of the most hilarious elements is the three bad boys (henceforth known as the idiot trio) who are tamed and become obsessed with the maid cafe; this is, in fact, one of the few chibi-izations of characters I approve of. The manga¡¯s really over the top and ridiculous, but almost entirely in a good way. I even laughed out loud quite a few times, and I¡¯m not especially demonstrative when I read generally.

Usui and Misaki comes really close to being annoying for me as a ship a lot of times, largely because Usui is perfect at everything and that gets old. Can¡¯t Misaki best him in SOMETHING? That trope of ¡°anything the heroine can do, the hero can do better¡± needs to die in a fire. However, I still ship them like mad because Usui is SUCH a weirdo. He totally looks the part of the sexy, alpha male lead, but generally he acts like a total goober. It¡¯s adorable. He essentially has no interest in other people, except for Misaki, and his weirdness softens my heart¡and hers. Misaki calls him a perverted space alien, and this is a nickname I am totally non-grossed out by. My favorite ship might be Kanou/Yukimura though. THANK YOU FOR SLIPPING THAT IN THERE, HIRO FUJIWARA. YOU ARE MY HIRO. (I¡¯m sure that doesn¡¯t get old.)

The early part of the series I loved all the way. Still, I do think it ran on too long. The plot goes in some unnecessary directions. I liked when it was just weirdness in high school, but everything about Usui¡¯s past ended up making me roll my eyes. It just got VERY Boys Over Flowers (View Spoiler ?) and Christina don¡¯t play that.

If you¡¯re a shojo manga fan, this is a must read. If you¡¯re new to manga, I¡¯m not sure if this is where I would recommend starting because it¡¯s rather weird and probably has more cultural things to adjust to than some other options. But, yes, hilariousness and romance = happy Christina.

Thank God for the internet. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to read the whole thing.

I got a copy of this from the library, since there's no chance of getting it from other sources... Sadly, whoever had this book before me tore out all the pages relating to the Maid Cafe! D:< SO ANNOYING! Don't mistreat library books, or I'll come for you! And you won't like meeting me. >:(

And of course, they tore a page from the bonus story too so I couldn't read that either. And the extras...

But anywho, enough complaining about vandals who need to treat books with more respect. ^_^#

Maid-Sama!, or "Kaichou wa Maid-Sama?!" (full title translates to "The student council president is a maid?!") is the story of Misaki, a girl who hates men. She becomes the student council president in what only recently became a co-ed high school. She has a secret, though. She works at a maid cafe!

The characters in this one are great, though perhaps a bit predictable at times. Misaki is pretty much your usual heroine but for the maid cafe thing, and Usui's your usual not-interested guy. The combination of these two, though, is what makes this story stand out. No hidden crushes. No, "OMG he's cute!" Instead, they are only barely aware of each other's existence.

If you're interested in a not-so-girly lovey-dovey love story, this is the one for you.

(Note: I've seen the anime, so I have a general idea on the whole series)

So as you might be able to tell I'm on a shoujo manga high at the minute and can't seem to stop. Reread this entire series in a day and I am not ashamed to say I might've cried a little bit at the ending.

Also I am now very certain that Usui Takumi is the reason behind my innately high expectations of men....
