In these 27 stories, the authors examine how they learned to value what was intrinsic in themselves. “Awesomeness is not a magical destination: it is within us. My favorite stories were gut-level honest, an examination of a slice of life that led writers to epiphanies: Value yourself. Get out of your comfort zone. Keep going no matter what. Get honest. We’ve heard this advice before, but the context made it deeply meaningful. Nearly every story spoke directly to me. The writers inspired me to rethink my life, to reflect on my unique assets. At the end of each chapter I felt a glimmer of hope. I plan to follow the tips and do the written exercises from several authors. I’m awesome—I just don’t know how yet!
I also want to acknowledge my friend Elias Patras (chapter 22), who recounted his journey into a new life. He had a plan...that fell apart. In a matter of days he fashioned Plan B for himself and his beloved dogs. I don’t want to spoil his story, but I’ll just say that things are working out well for this awesome man!
While reading own your awesome, I was especially drawn to Susan Rae’s chapter, cancer: strange wrapping paper. I am somewhat of a hypochondriac with a real fear of getting sick and of all medical procedures. As I read her story, I could almost feel her fear , knowing I would feel the same if it were me in that situation. But after reading the rest of her story I was at first amazed by her ability to change her attitude and thoughts to find the positive in a situation where positivity seems impossible, then amazed again that this gift can be learned by others. Thank God for people like Susan for not only sharing their personal lives and experiences, but for having the grace to share with others what they have learned so others can be greatly helped and to know they are not alone. I’m still a hypochondriac, but I’m a little less afraid.
So much insight here! While it’s true what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, but so many of us don’t think about it any further than this old adage. I love the chapter Honor The Landscape of Your Life. Janet Zavala is not afraid to share her vulnerabilities and hurts with us in this chapter. She explains the fear that paralyzed her and then the ability to take that fear and hurt and look at the strength it took to get through that situation and celebrate that as a strength! She then poses some easy questions and practices so we can start to do the same!
Own Your Awesome is truly a inspiring book. This book is filled with many amazing and heartfelt stories. I learned so much through each chapter. Every story was different and I was able to take away a lesson from each. There are even helpful exercises to try. Many of the chapters gave me chills. I loved Elias Patras chapter, Switching Your Mindset by Trusting Your Heart’s Desire. His words and passion are truly felt through each paragraph.
Hello, I read several chapters of this book already. I found it to be uplifting. When one is feeling a bit low or bored or overwhelmed, it is something that gives great comfort - simply in hearing that others have conflicts and challenges they managed to overcome. In the end, I found it therapeutic and human in every way. Loved it Florine Duffield
