An ex-pit fighter's killing days are far from behind them...
READ IT BECAUSE Fate brings together a Sanctioner and a violent murderer in the first half of a twisting tale.
THE STORY Sanctioner Malenko goes after a former pit fighter on a killing spree and discovers more than they expected, in the first part of a two part story.
Mitchel Scanlon is a British writer of science fiction novels and comics. He wrote novels for the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, and novels featuring 2000 AD character Judge Anderson. He also writes a comic series called Tales of Hellbrandt Grimm.
I’m reviewing parts 1&2 as a single entity; part one is going to make you want to read part two, and part two wouldn’t make any sense without the preceding story.
Once a Killer is a good short, perhaps not quite as good as others in the Warhammer Crime range, but still worth a read.
The Crime Week stories have looked at recruitment and pit fighting as general trends, and this directly ties those two trends together. It’s a really compelling narrative with several great characters and a satisfying arc, but while it kind of feels 40k, reading it I was super aware of Scanlon’s history as a writer for 2000ad; in places this felt like it could be in Mega City One of any number of dystopian settlements rather than Varangantua; while other stories have added rich detail to the city, this adds little of note and diminishes it somewhat.
I’m still really glad I read it, and really enjoyed it but I was just a tad disappointed by the lack of detail it had.
