Malibu, California-home to rock-and-roll gods and movie stars, the beautiful, the rich . . . and vampires.

Powerful and charismatic, Raphael is a Vampire Lord, one of the few who hold the power of life and death over every vampire in existence. Thousands call him Master and have pledged absolute loyalty on their very lives. But when, in a brazen and deadly daylight attack, a gang of human killers kidnaps the one female vampire he'd give his life for, Raphael turns to a human investigator to find his enemies before it's too late.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough and sexy, a private investigator and former cop who's tired of spying on cheating spouses and digging out old bank accounts. When Raphael asks for her help in tracking down the kidnappers, Cyn's happy to accept. But she soon realizes her greatest danger comes not from the humans, but from Raphael himself.

Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.

Please guys don't be fooled by the ugly cover because this is just one FREAKING AMAZING read. I highly recommend it.
It's been a while, but I just knew a read like this one would come along eventually. It's so hard to find good paranormal romance book now a days that once you do you must share it with everybody else,lol. New series as good as this one are hard to find. I just can't thank 'Mistik' enough for the recommendation.

THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN MISSING! The melancholy, the excess of feelings, characters that have deep emotions and are hard to analyze and comprehend. Most of the series I have been reading lately in this genre are shallow and superficial, just light reads. And I'm sorry but I just get bored with them! Where have the planned and logical plots go? those moments where you wonder what will happen next or if the conflicts will be resolved or not? Reads are so obvious and predictable for me now a days... BUT THIS BOOK SURPRISED ME COMPLETELY! You really get into the story as the plot is marvelous. What did it for me was the way the author unfolds all the events and shows the importance of how the characters interact with this new world we are being introduced to.
Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.

JUST LOVED IT!

RAPHAEL. Just a simple word, just a common name. Well it will get a whole new meaning to you all once you read this book. THIS IS DEFINITELY MY TYPE OF HERO. Be ready for a bad-ass to the core type of hero. One of the all top-mighty, alpha and powerful Vampire Lords. He doesn't ask, he rules and everyone else obeys. RESPECT is an interesting word to analyze once you meet Raphael. He definitely has it, from some because they owe him everything, form others because they fear his wrath, but no one dares to be disloyal to him.
Then there's CYN. Now this is what's hardest for an author to achieve IMHO. An amazing heroine. The hero is easy because we all get so infatuated with them that most of the times we forgive them things we don't usually let go on the heroine. Well, CYN is now on my top-fav-heroines list. This heroine is complex as well. She understands she is completely powerless against vampires, she fears them as everybody should, but she will never be defeated by them. She will always have her pride intact. I just adored her. This is no whiny heroine. Strong, clever and determined, that's what she is. I just hate when Heroes change their usual behavior and way of thinking because the heroine is too soft to love them for what they are. Well CYN is the type of girl who will never do this, she'll fight who she has to and stand against what comes to attack her. She isn't the type of girl who will run from a blood-shed or be scared by people dying. She analyzes situations and gets the best of it.

Sigh... Don't they make an amazing couple?

------> This is a read for all of those who miss the 'old' vampires. Forget about this new vampires described as lovely, funny and sweet (the perfect husband), capable of crying and tender feelings,lol. Be welcome to the old costumes where power is acquainted and conquered. There's not magic here. If you are on the top it's because you're the best and most powerful being. Also no 'mate' attraction. If they end up together is because they analyze the feelings they have for each other, because they REALLY got to know AND respect AND value the other. THIS is what I was missing. The 'we are destined to be together' was getting kinda old. Also it's nice to see characters with spine, characters who take time to see what they really want and don't do things just because it's destined.

Third re-read: 28.05.2017
Hmmm. I had seen this book on my dash, and found myself suddenly re-reading it yet again. Even if I have already read it once this year. It wasn't what I was looking for, at all, but it's Raphael so it's worth it. I'm sure if I'll continue with the re-read of this series though. I kinda want to re-read a book I re-read a couple days a go instead....because Ty.
New Rating - 3.5/4 stars.
“Would it be so terrible, sweet Cyn? he whispered. “To spend eternity at my side? But she was too far gone in sleep, and Raphael didn't know if he wanted to hear her answer anyway.

Second re-read: 05.01.2017
Still awesome. God I love Raphael. Though, the more I read this book, the more it feels like insta-love, though it's truly more like insta-lust... Anyways, it's Raphael, so who cares.
A dangerous smile crossed Raphael's face, his gaze meeting Duncan's, his fangs extending in a slow, predatory glide. “We will, Duncan. Never doubt it. And then they will pay. No one takes what is mine and lives.

First read review:
I loved this book! Vampire Lord Raphael was amazing, and I, well, I'm in love with him. He's strong, extremely powerful, possessive, dangerous and sexy as hell. Cynthia Leighton, a private investigator and former cop, is awesome, snappy and a strong woman. Cyn is quite funny as well. Can't wait to read the next book and see what will happen to Raphael and Cyn next!! I didn't like the end of this book, if the book had a different ending then I would have given it 5 stars, but it didn't.. Which makes me desperate to read book #2 as soon as possible!!

4 Vampire Lord Caught the Feels Stars

First read March 15 2014
Reread April 26 2019

Raphael the first book in the Vampires in America series, set the tone for a world filled with Sexy Vampire Lords, tons of action and a plot full of magic, power and betrayal. The story kept my interest. Raphael and Cyn both really intrigued me. There was great character and relationship development in this read. I felt like I really got to know them. The sexual tension OMG was through the roof. I thought my kindle was gonna melt. Cyn was really bad-ass, and smart. I love strong heroines, and Cyn made a great female lead. Raphael was a bit harder to warm up to at first. He was powerful, arrogant, sexy and ruthless.

I loved that as time went on Cyn brought out the more human side of Raphael. Cyn and Raphael were smokin' hot together. I loved that Cyn challenged Raph. She didn't bow down to him and kiss the ring. There was some interesting secondary characters that I can't wait to get to know better. Duncan, Juro, Elke to name a few. I hated Cyn's sister. I would have liked Cyn to beat her ass, have her arrested, or something. Overall I loved the book but I hated that it ended with them parting ways. I get it big bad vampire lord caught the feels and it scared him but for God sake Man the fuck up. This book ends in a to be continued so I am going to be jumping straight into the next book.

**Price drop to $0.99 at Amazon US, 8/30/15!**

**3.5 stars**

I liked this book, though I don't know if it is exactly my taste. Raphael is a bad ass vampire, and not just for show. He is a murder-without-remorse, cut-a-bitch kind of vampire. I tend to like my vampires kind of... fluffier or mushier or something. This is not that kind of vampire book.

I really enjoyed the writing in this book. It was sort of matter of fact, very tight, and had lots of action thrown in. It actually bordered on gory, in my opinion, though I'm sure those less squeamish wouldn't mind. I loved the sex-positive attitude of Cynthia and the way she held her own. She wasn't annoying or helpless or a damsel in distress. She was pretty awesome. Smart and deadly- she was a fabulous heroine. I didn't like Raphael quite as much. He felt very, very cold to me, and I never felt like I really got him. I didn't get inside his head like I wanted to.

The author made some really good decisions with this book. I loved that it wasn't insta-love between the two MCs. I liked that the author gave the romance some time to build. Smart move, lady. However, that ending! Cliffhangers irritate me to no end. However, I certainly enjoyed this book enough to continue on with the series.

I would have given this 5-stars if the author didn't completely betray me with a "to be continued" ending! What the hell?

fear my angry wrath!

I like my paranormal smutty romance like I like my massages: with a happy ending.

See, she gets it!

Aside from that, this book was pretty awesome. I loved Cyn and Raphael. I loved the vampire politics and intrigue. I loved the world.

this book AND a BLT would be too much yum to handle!

Okay, I have to go now because apparently I have to read the next book in order to find out what the hell happens. Thanks, Obama!

Brilliant!

Raphael a Vampire Lord and territory leader of the West Coast is edgy, dark and oh so swoony, he had my underpants melting. He sets the rules and all must obey, if not, face his wrath!

Cynthia is a strong heroine and speaks her mind, which makes for interesting and often amusing dialogue.

The story is set in the modern times, but with a glimpse of the old, along with the complex rules and hierachy of the Old Ones. It's fast paced and the connection between Cynthia and Raphael, just sizzles!

"I could throw you down and have you right here, sweet Cyn, and you'd do nothing but scream for more. You are mine. My blood sings in your veins; it calls you to me even now."

D.B Reynolds does a fantastic job of creating this world of intrigue, action and passion. It's a must read. 5 HUGE SHINING STARS!

I really enjoyed this vampire romance. The heroine, Cyn, is a strong smart woman who gets involved with the Raphael, Vampire Lord of the western US whenever she helps find a missing vampire as part of her job as a private investigator. Raphael is a very interesting character, as a vampire lord he is strong, arrogant and not afraid of violence to achieve his ends. He is also powerful and sexy, he and Cyn have an instant spark between them that leads to some hot love scenes.

The writing was really good, the story was interesting and the characters were well-rounded and likable. I really enjoyed how Cyn thought things out and fought for what she wanted.

Just a warning, you need to read the next book, Jabril, to get the second half of Cyn and Raphael's story. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend the first two books I which I have read so far. I am getting a little fatigued by paranormals, mostly because I so rarely find any good ones these days, but this one was well worth reading (along with Jabril).

For some reason, I was thinking of this book as some obscure, new author. And after reading her little ditty after the book, I realize that she was very new, as this was her first book. But it sure didn't seem like it. I was really surprised at the world that she has here. She didn't spend a lot of time explaining all of the little details about how vampires came to be and their role in society and how humans deal with them. She simply wrote her book as if they exist, and that's just how it is. That left this book without the dreaded first book syndrome. I already felt comfortable with the idea within the first few pages.

Raphael is brutal, and the author makes no excuses or apologies for him. He is responsible for many people, and in order to protect them and not appear weak, he has to show no mercy. Cyn is one of those tough chicks, a woman in a man's world. She doesn't want a man or need one. Once these two meet, it's pretty obvious there is a battle of wills. And let me tell you, it gets unexpectedly hot. As in, all of a sudden, whoa!

The book was gritty, full of action, and really, surprisingly good. Five stars for me, and I'm stoked to read the next!

OMG this book was a lesson of "how to destroy a potential success book with a lame end"!!! I HATE IT!

Calming down... calming down... ok, now I can explain better....

I like this book... it's hot! The sex scenes were great! True! When Cyn and Raphael get together you can be certain that will read great and well describe sex.
I love the story! It's a little to much dramatic the initial narration (some parts she describe Raphael so potent and scary that I roll my eyes... was like a mob not a vampire coven) but it was necessary. When the story go on you will understand that he is really potent!
I was also enthusiastic reading about a secondary character (Duncan).

So as I said, this book was so great!!! BUT them you get to the lame end... OMG I really hate it! I can't say why or will ruin this book, maybe to you it's good how the story "don't end" but to me was terrible... just the fact that there is the phrase "To be continued..." is a sign of how much this book disappointed me. I read a lot of series, but when a book end the writer never leave the reader in the middle of the story! Yeah! The story was in the middle!
My desire was to scream reading the "to be continued"!

Maybe D.B. Reynolds don't know that TV shows as Lost or ER ending with "to be continued" phrases are normal... but on a book??? NO!!! Lame end... that's what I think.

Excellent start to this vampire series!

Lord Raphael rules with an iron fang and he his harsh, but oh so HOT! He has hired Cyn to investigate the recent kidnapping of one of the female vampires under his protection. Cyn is one kick-ass, awesome private investigator, and when the two of them meet sparks fly. This is not your typical paranormal vampire romance series. There is a lot of story that delves into this fascinating and different world. At times it is very cruel, but necessary for the survival of Raphael and his “children. So many interesting characters, especially Duncan, not quite sure whether I like him or not, but he makes for some interesting reading. Raphael is an unforgiving ruler, extremely protective of his people and doesn’t do romance. The attraction is brewing between Raphael and Cyn, but it’s not all that simple, and you will get no HEA here. Cyn has put a dent in Raphael’s armor and he’s not quite sure what to do about it. Great writing, good dialogue, terrific world building and I want more!

Cynthia Leighton is a former cop turned private investigator. She’s smart and tough and the fact that she saved a vampire while she was still a cop made her the human P.I. vampires turned to for help. And Cynthia has always welcomed their cases until she’s asked for help in tracking down kidnappers by the very powerful Vampire Lord Raphael. The threat he poses to her health and her hormones seems more dangerous than the humans she must find.

Raphael is one of the most powerful vampires in existence and he’s used to being feared and getting what he wants. When a gang of humans kidnaps the one female vampire he cares about, he’s determined to get her back and destroy his enemies. And Cynthia is just the kind of human he needs to help him find them. And he’s more than willing to explore the attraction between them, but the feisty investigator refuses him at every turn.

Soon they are fighting for their lives and the passion between them threatens to consume them both. Can they find their enemy before it’s too late?

I love strong heroines and Cynthia was pretty great. I loved her confidence and how she tried to ignore the pull Raphael had on her, despite how attracted she was to him.

He'd never felt such hunger for a woman, mortal or immortal. What would he sacrifice in the face of such desire? What would he give up to spend his nights in her bed?

Raphael is your typical centuries old vampire arrogant and domineering. I have to admit I had trouble liking him the first half of the book, his lordly attitude made me want to slap him numerous times. The way he expected Cynthia to just fall at his feet angered me greatly. Luckily he did get better the second half, although he still has a long way to go before I like him.

The chemistry between them was pretty scorching from the get-go and I liked the way Cynthia kept butting head with Raphael. The sexy times were very hot and with that ending I really can’t wait to read the next book to see what happens next with these two.

I love PNR and I really like the way this author writes. There were lots of humorous banter, a suspenseful plot and sexy romance. This was quite a sold first installment and I hope the next book will be amazing.

Well, the writing wasn't JR Ward or Kelley Armstrong, but the storyline kept my interest.

There were a few plot holes like once Raphael left Cyn to follow up on something. When he did he realized he promised her in on the action. She acted and said things in her head that suggested days had past yet it had only been mere hours based on the timeline.

And there is the insta lust. While I felt that completely, I didn't buy Cyn's inner thoughts at the end of the story about Raphael and what he meant to her.

Still, the story was compelling enough to have me move forward. That and the convenient hook the author left the readers with at the end.

3.5 Stars: An Enjoyable Re-Read

Vampire Lord Raphael is a man who oozes confidence, sex appeal and power, something human PI Cynthia (Cyn) Leighton tries to block from her mind when she finds herself unwittingly working for him trying to locate the kidnapers who have taken someone very important to him. Now if she can complete her job without getting killed or her heart broken. I liked how kickass Cyn is, comfortable in her skin she embraces who she is - faults and all.

Cyn's sister Holly proves how wrong the phrase 'blood is thicker than water' is.

I liked the combination of romance, action and suspense in this.

If you read this, be aware that book 2 needs to be read to see what happens with Cyn and Raphael.

Really?!?! This is how it ends?

Gah, I tried to read as fast as possible to get to see where and how everyone winds up and it ended like this! I need to start the next one :P
It was a pretty nice book, although it took a bit 'til I got caught up in the story, guess that's why I only gave it 3 stars.
On the bright side though, this was the first vampire I've found that actually acts like one. He's not that lonely "old" guy who hates his power and who has to suffer for it. No, this guy is badass and I really really liked that. So I can't wait to start the next one, and maybe find the ending I'm looking for.

I enjoyed the writing, it reminded me of the Guild Hunter series, a powerful vampire master needing the help of our human, kick-ass heroine.
The book had heat, violence and the heroine was resourceful and strong. The next book is a continuiation, since the hero and heroine don't end up together in this one.

Joint review with

Alina: Where should we start sexy?
Marulett: Mmm. Bad things?
Alina: :))
Maru: Or things we didn´t like?
Alina: How about with: What did you think about the book Maru?
Maru: I think it was good, but books 1 and 2 could totally be merged and be book 1. And I wanted more steam
Alina: :)) Good point
Maru: How about you?
Alina: I liked it, though both characters got on my nerves a little. Let’s talk only about 1 first. then 2.
Maru: Always getting ahead of myself... back to book 1 then. Yeah me too. I liked Raphael even though he was kind of a douche with Cyn.

Our Raphael

Alina: I thought the same thing! And I couldn't stop comparing him with my Raphael(from the Guild Hunter series). I think if I would have refrained from that I would have liked the whole book more.
Maru: Hahaha..yeah that happens
Alina: They lookd a like a little, and both of them have that irresistible aura of power, which I am a sucker for ;;). If you could choose 3 words to describe him what would those be?
Maru: MMM only 3? Sexy, sexy and sexy? LOL. Nah, just kidding. Sexy, ruthless and
Alina: It's a great start LOL. I think I'd go with remorseless, powerful, hot.
Maru: Let´s add bloodthirsty?

Alina: Good one! He kind of killed everyone that got in his way so it works perfectly.
Maru: Exactly. What did you think of Cyn?
Alina: I liked her, she is smart and a little emotion-conscious(if I could say that :))). The only time when I wanted to smack her over the head was when she ran... after they had sex.
Maru: Me too! Totally agreed.
Alina: I know she regretted it afterwards, but too little too late.
What did you think of her way of finding trouble?
Maru: I wanted to smack some sense into her. I think that trouble would find her anyway, even if she didn´t try.

Our Cyn

Alina: Magnet :))
Maru: Exactly magnet for vamp trouble.
Alina: MMMhm. I liked the world building as well. It didn't have the information dump you can expect with 1st books in a series.
Maru: I think the information the author gave worked fine for the story and, of course, it left you wanting to know more.
Alina: It was a good UF. I liked the secondary characters as well, poor Duncan and the other bodyguards.
Maru: Yeah, me too. I hope we get a Duncan book fast
Alina: It's the 5th one. He'll make a good hero: strong with a head on his shoulders.
Maru: I saw that there´s a 5.5 book for Rapheal and Cyn. Can´t wait to get there
Alina: It will be interesting to see their relationship evolve. Now, I think we should finish with the ending.

Maru: Oh God the ending. I wanted to kill the author, thank goodness we had book two out.
Alina: Raphael did what only a man could do :)), even if he had over 500 years.
Maru: Yeah, you´re right. I just wanted them to end up together in book 1. I wanted the HEA right away.
Alina: Me too, though, in a way, it was the right decision. Both of them got to see how bad it would be otherwise. So, how much will you give it?
Maru: 4 stars. You?
Alina: That's what I thought as well. I had fun, doing the review this way. We should repeat performance :P :))
Maru: Me too. Let´s do this more often.

BR with Honey Boo Boo. Have we found a possible obsession worthy paranormal?! Lord, I hope so!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FUCK THIS BOOK. #notmyRaphael.
We have a human society living alongside the vampires, who don't really interact with them besides using the humans as food and sentient sexdolls (considering how well they treat them). Humans know next to nothing about said vampires, which stems from the vampires being all secretive and thinking they are the superior race *cue eye roll here*.
Which leads to our protagonists.
-Raphael, arrogant alpha male vampire leader.
=Cyn, not so arrogant but still pretend confident human private investigator.
He's playing big macho boss most of the time, she’s in a perpetual state of fear and trembles at the idea of being squashed any moment all the time.
But in reality these two come across as: him, a spoiled brat who thinks he’s a big shot (but who would look like a fruit fly compared to other true badass PNR heroes), who likes to take what he wants and fuck the consequences; her, another spoiled brat who cries over her own tragic childhood (super rich daddy ignored her and mommy abandoned her...boohoo), with a survival instinct next to zero and an expired-a-century-ago brain to mouth filter. #theyremadeforeachother #relationshipgoals
Big almighty alpha male goes grr grr! when pathetic female creature, who should crawl before him, does not imitate all the other females of her species and presents herself belly-up and with her legs open spread-eagle ready to receive his huge pulsing cock, but at the same time in her head she’s having a war between the pussy in heat side of her and the few neurons she has left.
So he growls some more, throws a hissy fit and abuses a few people only to go back to intimidate her into doing the do with him (how can you not swoon over this guy, huh?).
And when they actually fuck each other? Do they do it in a bed, in a limo, in front of the fireplace? Nope, that would be too simple! They do it in a dirty warehouse after they’ve mauled a dozen of people! Because that’s so H O T! (😑)
Somewhere along those lines was a story as well, her being a private investigator, a missing vampire (who she thinks is Raphael’s former lover but in reality she’s her sister...I know, those detective skills are amazing.... too much time wasted being jealous) but well...obviously the focus wasn't on that, god forbids.
Also, I want to talk about the ending...a goddamn cliffhanger?!?! What is this, a trashy soap opera?!
An also, humor me on this:
* Angel’s Blood by Nalini Singh: first edition published on January 2009 (mass market paperback published in March of the same year), male protagonist is an immortal named Raphael.
* Raphael by D.B. Reynolds: published on April 2009, male protagonist is an immortal named Raphael.
This read as much like romantic suspense as PNR. The vamps in D.B Reynolds are truly vampires in the truest sense of the word. They are unforgiving, brutal and attuned to their predatory natures as one would expect. No fluff and shimmers here.
I really liked this world. Having Malibu as the backdrop worked well in combining the validity with the rumour of vampires existing. People weren't sure whether to believe the fantasy or not, but a few knew the truth.
I really liked Cynthia. She was a strong and capable heroine immersed in her work and therefore avoiding the gap of loneliness in her heart. Until it was rudely awakened by a powerful and sexy vampire lord. Needless to say, I loved Raphael. He was relentless and ruled with a single mindedness that was both terrifying and just. I think he was just as surprised by feeling something for Cyn as she did for him.
They also shared the useless habit of denying their true feelings for another. I can understand Raphael's reluctance to admit he cares beyond simple courtesy, but he sees that as admitting defeat. And as a lord, such a thing would be extremely dangerous.
Cyn, however, I really sympathized with. Having been raised alone despite having an abundance of money and nannies, never felt real love or want. She lives her life as a testament to this , avoiding marriage and serious relationships. When Raphael comes onto the scene she questions her feelings and I couldn't help but feel her vulnerability and fear of heartbreak.
The suspense was great. It was a wonderful game of cat and mouse. There's a scene where Cyn accompanies a fellow undercover cop to a party that had my heart pumping a mile a minute! And for this book being the first for this author, she did a great job.
Of, course there's a cliffy! The book ended abruptly and gave me no chance to mend my own sense of loss, so jumping into the second one, Jabril right away! Great PNR and loads of sexual chemistry, I really liked it.
GENRE: PNR/Romantic suspense
STEAM: High
POV: 3rd person
*Hint: This book is going to blow your mind.
Negatives & Positives
I found 1 typo. That's the only negative I can come up with. For me, this story was 'Out of this world amazing!
The suspense and intensity level was to the Nth Degree. Definitely kept me on my toes. From page one you start having moments of 'I really did not expect that.....'.
The writing is absolutely, no doubt about it, Top Notch.
The action in rapid and constant.
The romance is adult, hot and steamy.
Every element ties in together. No repetition. No rambling.
This is what I want in all the books I read. Second 'new to me' author I have found this year to impress me this much!
This is the first time I have read this author and I have fallen in love with her work.
I am so going to stalk this author.
I am going to get every book in this series and find EVERYTHING she has written.
They are mine! One way or another, they will ALL be MINE! WhaHaHA!
Let the stalking commence!!
Spoilers ahead
Raphael a powerful vampire Lord hires Cyn to finally a female vampire kidnapped from his estate. Cyn is a former cop turned PI. She's a badass who can more than handle herself and her tenacity eventually leads her to uncover betrayal in Raphael's people and an attempt to overthrow the vampire Lord.
From the moment they met sparks flew between Raphael and Cyn but it actually took them a while to build up to sex
Cyn had a fuck buddy who we know she slept with before meeting Raphael thankfully this is not described
With Cyn not giving any indication that she wants him Raphael goes to a feeding house party in a frustrated rage and feeds from and almost has sex with another woman. He didn't go through with it and nothing had happened between him and Cyn as yet
Lots of gruesome scenes as the vamps delivered justice to the betrayers and their coconspirators. Cyn and Raphael actually have sex for the first time after a big blood filled battle in the same room as the dead bodies(I liked it 😂)
All in all my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it, hopefully nothing happens in the other books to trigger my safety loving brain.
This ends on a relationship cliff hanger as Raphael leaves town with his sister and things between him and Cyn end with no conclusion
I am first and foremost an Urban Fantasy fan, so while I read PNR series on occasion they don’t really grip me. Heck, I’m only through book 2 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series myself after starting that series months ago, though I do plan to read them all eventually. That said, D.B. Reynolds has done a great job at keeping me engaged all throughout. I have read these books back to back, so I will write a review per day for each one. Not since the Fever series have I been motivated to read this many books all together. Though, I read that whole series in 6 days so it’s still distinguished for me. But I digress
Raphael is the the first book in the Vampire Empire series, taking us to present day Malibu, California. The title character, Raphael, is the Vampire Lord of his territory with legions of loyal vampire and human underlings, but the strength of this loyalty is tested after a female vampire who’s dear to him is abducted. Since this happens during the day (while vampires sleeps), humans are the likely culprits, so he needs to recruit a human to solve this mystery.
Cue Cynthia Leighton, a successful P.I. and former cop who takes the job on to give herself a good challenge. But she may have bitten off more than she can chew (pun intended?) as she agrees to work for Raphael, who is proving himself to be irresistible for all of the wrong reasons. Begrudgingly she has to work with him to find his special vampire, and that’s where things get dangerous…and complicated.
The story deserves a better cover than this. It’s not the worst cover, but the quality doesn’t really correlate with the writing, which is on a greater level. I loved that this book drew me in pretty easily. It’s not too heavy on the magic and world building which may have helped, but the mystery aspect was still pretty interesting as well as the author’s personal take on vampire lore. I liked that the heroine was smart, even though Raphael becomes a growing weakness for her over time. I thought the characters were introduced nicely and I could see signs of personalities that will only develop as the series continues.
Thankfully, a number of books are already out because this one ends on a slight cliffhanger. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting from other reviews, but you definitely become motivated to want to pick up the next book. Raphael and Cyn have great chemistry and it’s only strengthened through the author allowing it to build within the plot. It keeps things a little more organic than what you find in the everyday run-of-the-mill PNR title. That said, I still have a problem with centuries old vampires falling for human women who aren’t that extraordinary. I have a hard time believing that Raphael never came across a independent, smart, and capable woman like Cyn before. But that didn’t keep me from wanting to continue reading the novels.
I think this series is a really good blend of everything, making it a great middle-ground for PNR/UF fans.
3 Stars!!
“He would play her game for now, even let her think she had won.
Cynthia Leighton is an investigator for the west coast vampire community. She is smart, resourceful and good at what she does. When a very old and powerful vampire lord offers her a job- to find his abducted (let’s say)...friend (Alexandra)...Cynthia has no idea what she is getting herself into.
Vampire Lord Raphael is one of the most powerful vampires in the world- absolutely deadly. But even his strength can’t protect him from traitors. Someone wants war...and Raphael is more than ready for it.
The vampire lord is really intrigued by Cyn. Soon the only thing he wants is a chance to be with the feisty investigator...but Cyn is not ready to trust him. Basically...she doesn’t trust anyone. They both will unite in order to save Alexandra but they don’t know who is responsible for her abduction. Maybe it’s much more complicated than they thought...
“If life had taught her anything at all, it was that love could not be trusted.
The story was okay. I enjoyed most of it but towards the end it became really boring (which was a big surprise). I really struggled with the last few chapters. Also, I found the writing style a little bit boring too. It was really descriptive (mainly of glimpses of the past and some not really important details about the present) and because of that I couldn’t feel the connection between Raphael and Cyn. Their conversations were too short and not enough. I seriously missed the moment when their passion became so strong that (apparently) they couldn’t resist it.
Another thing I would like to mention is that I actually though that each book will be about a different couple/character because of their titles. Well...I was definitely not happy to be left with something that was really close to a cliffhanger.
So overall the book was okay...but I will not continue with the rest of the series.
3.5 stars and a promising start to a series that is a new one for me.
I liked it, but I found that, rather unusually for a PNR book, there is little to no world building. Vampires exist, humans ‘sort of know about them living in their world, but it’s not really talked about. There’s no real background given on the way things are and why, you just jump in and go with the flow. This is probably a positive to readers who find that sort of thing boring, but I like to know all about the world that characters live in, so I missed it in this book.
However, I do enjoy a strong heroine, and Cynthia (Cyn) is great! Intelligent, witty, and a bit of a badass, she is an ex-cop who has left the force and is working as a PI. Her clientele is undead-heavy, and her latest case sees her employed by Raphael, the Vampire Lord of the US West Coast, to investigate a missing vampire.
Raphael is not your romantic, caring, secretly-looking-for-love vampire. This is an uber-powerful, brutal, ruthless and unapologetic badass!
“Raphael came through the door like a child's nightmare, his eyes glowing an almost solid silver with wrath, his gleaming fangs fully extended, blood painting his mouth a brilliant red, dripping from his chin to shine wetly against the tattered remains of his black shirt. His huge chest was heaving with the fury of his breath, and his hands curled into claws as his gaze found her and he growled a warning. “Release her, human.
“Who are you? the man rasped, fear taking away his breath, coarsening his voice.
'Release her.
The man tightened his grip. “Come closer and she dies.
Raphael's mouth widened in a terrifying smile. “You think to bargain with me?
Yep, he is one scary mo-fo!
“When Raphael says jump, I say, “Please don’t hurt me, Master.
I really liked Raphael. I like his confidence, and his arrogance, and the fact that he is so brutal. I also love that this book is dual POV so we get to see into his background a little bit, although I would love to know more about him! I’m hoping that will come in the next books though.
There is a strong focus on the kidnapping, and Cynthia’s investigation has her dealing with Russian mob-like vampires, crooked cops, and devastating betrayals. There’s a really good amount of action, and some great smartass banter.
“What would you do? Climb over the walls or something?
Raphael looked down his nose at her as if she’d suggested something completely ridiculous. “Oh, right, she said, rolling her eyes. “What was I thinking? Okay, so Raphael here walks up to the gate, presumably with his coat billowing around him in suitably dramatic fashion.
And then there is the romance sort of. Cyn and Raphael have some intense chemistry, and they both want each other  bad, but there isn’t really any romance to speak of. They do have feelings for each other. Raphael is possessive and protective of Cyn, and claims her as his own in his own way  with lots of “mine proclamations - and, in return, Cyn has strong feelings for him, but despite admitting that they want each other badly (and acting on that a couple of times  hotness!!), there’s not a lot of development with the emotions, or even time spent together.
Which brings me to the ending  effing cliffhanger! Godammit! While there is resolution on one aspect of the story, another is left wide open. But, on the other hand, I am glad that the ending wasn't rushed in any way. The closer I got to the ending, the more worried I was that there would be a hurried resolution to the story, so I’m really happy that that didn’t happen. But still cliffhanger = BAD! No, no, no!
I’m curious to see how the series goes on from here. Cyn and Raphael’s story needs to be resolved and the series branches off to include other characters, and I’m intrigued to see how it all comes together.
Overall, this was an entertaining read. I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars.
Not recommended for romance, but very good for a smart female human PI helping vampires solve a kidnapping.
STORY BRIEF:
Cyn is a former Los Angeles cop, now working as a private investigator. She's tough, cool, smart, and rich (inherited). When she was a cop, she saved a vampire's life, so now they hire her when they need human help. Alexandra is a vampire who lives with Raphael, lord of the vampires in the western U.S. She is kidnapped by a group of vampires and humans. Raphael hires Cyn to help find Alexandra.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was labeled paranormal romance which implies a couple gets together at the end. But the couple was not together at the end. Also, there was no romance. Raphael's actions were those of a guy making booty calls. There was lust, but he never indicated any feelings for Cyn. After sex he coldly left her without a word. At the end of the book, she was hurting. The last words in the book are "To be continued." On the author's website in the description about the sequel (Book 2), is the following. "Running from L.A. and its seductive Vampire Lord, Raphael, Cyn sees the Houston job as a welcome refuge, a place to get away and heal her broken heart." In Book 2, Cyn interacts with Jabril, an evil Houston vampire. My frustration is wondering how many books will there be before I can see Cyn end up with Raphael? Then I find a mini story on the author's website about Cyn and Raphael spending Valentines Day together - written as if they have been a couple for awhile. This scene occurs after Book 2 which I have not read. I wonder if they get together in Book 2, but I don't know. Too many other series have frustrated me with the guy and girl still not together after several books. So I'm going to pass on this series. If you want to read the mini story, go to DBReynolds Wordpress Com, Vampire Vignettes #2.
An example of Raphael's emotional distance was when Cyn says to him "You're right, I do want you. But there's a difference between wanting and having. And I won't have anyone who doesn't want me." Raphael says nothing. Another time Cyn says to Raphael "You don't want me. You just want to f___ me." Again, Raphael says nothing. That's no fun.
Now, if I can forget about expecting romance, I will say that the story and characters were good. Cyn is a neat character and does some smart things which I enjoyed. We don't see Raphael being smart, but he doesn't need to be since he is so powerful. He simply exudes his power to control others. There is good action, mystery, and storytelling about solving a mystery, hurting the bad guys, and saving the victim.
I had a problem with one scene. Raphael tortures and kills a human in such a way that another human soils himself and is in such fear that he is willing to confess everything. But the author didn't show or give any details as to what Raphael did to the first guy. I wanted to know. I'd prefer showing not telling in this case.
DATA:
Story length: 240 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 6. Setting: current day primarily southern California with some back stories in Russia and France. Copyright: 2009. Genre: paranormal mystery with sex.
I have read this book before but I was told by goodreads friends that I should give it another shot since it's been a couple of years. They claim that this book must be read with book 2 immediately following. So I tried the audiobook.
2 years later and I still don't like this book. There isn't anything wrong with her, it just doesn't engage me.
Story: Vampire Lord Raphael was just betrayed by one of his own, and they kidnapped his ward Alexandra. Raphael suspects that someone much stronger convinced Albin to turn against him but he doesn't have evidence to prove who the ring leader is.
Raphael asked Cynthia Layton to assist him with the investigation of the kidnapping, particularly ferreting out the humans who participated in the crime since the betrayer used humans in order to orchestra the kidnapping.
As they work together, they develop an attraction to each other. Part of my problem is that I don't "feel" the chemistry. I didn't connect with either Cyn nor Raph. It was a tad boring actually. But I will read Jabril, book 2 because I agreed to.
I think the writing as well as the plot just doesn't resonate with me.
