An author of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for children and young adults as well as an author and author/illustrator of picture books for children, Cynthia Rylant is recognized as a gifted writer who has contributed memorably to several genres of juvenile literature. A prolific author who often bases her works on her own background, especially on her childhood in the West Virginia mountains, she is the creator of contemporary novels and historical fiction for young adults, middle-grade fiction and fantasy, lyrical prose poems, beginning readers, collections of short stories, volumes of poetry and verse, books of prayers and blessings, two autobiographies, and a biography of three well-known children's writers; several volumes of the author's fiction and picture books are published in series, including the popular "Henry and Mudge" easy readers about a small boy and his very large dog.

Rylant is perhaps most well known as a novelist. Characteristically, she portrays introspective, compassionate young people who live in rural settings or in small towns and who tend to be set apart from their peers.

Fun and relatable - Poppleton just goes about living - and in the little things finds happiness. A great perspective on how to go through life. I think that we often project our own 'schedule' on children - and that it sometimes interferes with their ability to explore and learn things on their own. This book is very relatable from that perspective.

First sentence: Poppleton's friend Hudson was visiting one night.

Premise/plot: Poppleton Everyday is an early chapter book with three stories. In the first story, Poppleton and his friend (his mouse friend) go stargazing. In the second story, Poppleton goes shopping for a NEW bed. (How will he know which bed is the right bed?!) In the third story, Poppleton is talked into going sailing by a friend.

My thoughts: I really enjoyed this one! Poppleton continues to delight. I can't believe I'm only now discovering this gem of a character. My favorite story in this one is "The New Bed."

He lay on his back. He lay on his side. He lay with one leg over the edge. He lay with both legs over the edge. He lay on his head with his bottom in the air. "How many different ways do you sleep?" asked the saleslady. "About twenty," said Poppleton.
"Do you have any books?" he asked.
The saleslady brought Poppleton a book. Poppleton propped up some pillows and read a few pages. The saleslady looked at her watch. "Do you want to buy the bed?" she asked Poppleton.

The third book in the Poppleton series, Poppleton Everyday highlights a few of the pig’s everyday experiences, including a tumultuous sailboat ride, a shopping trip for a new bed, and stargazing. Poppleton charms with his quirky adventures that resolve almost as quickly as they initially fell apart.

1st or 2nd grade students would thoroughly enjoy reading this book independently. The stories are humorous and easy to follow, peppered with relevant vocabulary and predictable sentence structures. Students are accustomed to animal personification, so the vibrant illustrations of Poppleton the pig and his animal friends would be familiar to them. Rylant has created a likable and sincere character in Poppleton. I love that his world is vibrant and populated with loyal friends.

Poppleton Everyday (Poppleton Book Three) / written by Cynthia Rylant; illustrated by Mark Teague -- New York : The Blue Sky Press / Scholastic Inc., c1998. (48 pages)

SUMMARY: Poppleton the pig goes stargazing, tries out a new bed before he buys it, and goes sailing for the first time.

This title is considered a beginner reader chapter book divided into three separate stories/chapters. The first story is about two friends stargazing but Poppleton gets dizzy until his friend Hudson solves the problem allowing them to enjoy laying out under the stars. The second story tells when Poppleton wants a new bed and heads to the store where he tries out the new bed from reading, watching TV, to eating his nightly snack. The third story is when Poppleton joins his friend Fillmore on his first sailing trip and does not have a good time.

REVIEW: I have always enjoyed Poppleton stories and in this volume the second story is my favorite. How often I have wanted to try out new furniture before buying to see if it is really what I want.

NOTE: Rylant is the author of several series for beginning readers including HENRY AND MUDGE and MR. PUTTER AND TABBY.

1) Awards: none

2) Age range: 4-8 years old

3) Summary: Poppleton, an adorable little pig, has three adventures. First, he star gazes, and runs into a problem of feeling dizzy. Then, Poppleton goes to the furniture store to buy a new bed and must experience it with a TV, book, etc. before deciding. Next, he takes a stroll on the sea in a boat.

4) Review: I thought this book was very cute to begin reading longer chapter books. Poppleton is funny and quirky, with little issues that are easily fixed with the help of his friends. I would use this book in my classroom in reading groups.

5) In class use:
-assign for book groups
-teaching about main topic or plot within each chapter

Genre: fiction: animal fantasy. Grade 2. Very early chapter book.

I love the Poppleton books for readers who are making the transition to chapter books. They are small books with short stories in them at about a 2nd grade reading level (reminiscent of Frog and Toad). These books are great for vocabulary building, looking for problems/solutions, and making inferences and predictions. If I were teaching 2nd grade I would want these books on my shelf, along with Frog and Toad and the Mercy Watson books.

{My thoughts} Poppleton is a fun series for children. It’s about a pig that well isn’t exactly common in his ways and beliefs. He has an odd way about going about things and a different type of humor to most the other characters within the pages of the books.

This is a book that has a couple of short stories within the pages. The illustrations and the text go hand and hand. They help the child to be able to imagine what the author and the illustrator are both trying to convey to the reader. The illustrations are well done and are a great portrayal of the text. The text I think sometimes is a bit much on a few of the pages, but for the most part it is simple and easy for a child to read and follow a long with.

I did enjoy this book as much as I’d enjoyed the first book in the series. I do need to get a hold of the second as I realize I’d skipped over it some how. I look forward to reading more in this series in the near future!

I didn't like this book because I don't like sharks. I enjoyed this book because when Poppleton went into a boat, they came into a storm and the boat flipped over, and it looked kind of funny. When Poppleton got out of the boat, he was very not-relaxed.

Book three. I guess I'm just not the target audience. Too silly, but not in a good way imo, for me. I probably will skip the rest of the series.

Amazon Book Description:
From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2--This sincere and affable pig will make beginning readers giggle with three new adventures. In "The Sky," Poppleton and his pal Hudson, a mouse, stargaze in the backyard. When Hudson notices that his friend's eyes are closed, the pig explains that the vast night sky makes him dizzy. The mouse then cuts a small hole in a blanket and places it over Poppleton's face. Now he sees only a "tiny sky." In the second episode, Poppleton shops for a new bed and is assisted by an efficient feline saleslady. His elaborate testing of the prospective purchase and his requests to make sure the bed suits his habits cause the cat to become increasingly impatient but eventually result in a sale. In the final story, Poppleton is invited aboard Fillmore's new sailboat, where he is told to do nothing but sit back and relax. This proves to be impossible, particularly when the goat's sailboat capsizes, but the pig ends up having the last laugh. The chapter format, and varied settings and characters will give beginning readers relief from a seemingly endless decoding task. The light touches of humor are enhanced by the engaging art filled with expression and charm. It's more colorful and interesting than the illustrations found in many easy readers.

With a new reader at home, I've had a lot of exposure to different easy reader books. I am especially impressed with those who can tell and interesting story with easy vocabulary. It is especially impressive when the author includes moral lessons and subtle humor (makes listening more fun for the adults).

The Poppleton books are my current favorite. Poppleton is a loveable pig, with loyal friends Hudson the mouse, Filmore the goat, and Cherrie Sue the llama (my personal favorite as well as Peter's). The books are entertaining reads and simple enough for Anna (6 years) to read to her brothers. Cynthia Rylant's other easy readers are also well-written, but Poppleton is our favorite.

We love the Poppleton books! My almost 3 year old is always happy to read them although this one in particular didn't have an especially strong showing - the stories were ok but nothing amazing. She liked the one about the boat ride best, I think because it includes a lot of Poppleton having a not particularly great time.

26 months - my daughter really enjoys a number of easy reader chapter like books. It's nice to mix things up a bit with the picture books for something a bit more wordy. Poppleton Is always doing something oddly entertaining.

I have not yet met a young child who doesn't love Poppleton (though I expect there must be some somewhere). Sweet stories about Poppleton and his friends for early readers that also work well read aloud to younger children.

Good early chapter book about Poppleton (the pig) and his everyday adventures with friends. The text is repetitive, following a Q & A format - which is a good connection to dialogue and punctuation. Chapters in this book: The Sky The New Bed, The Sailboat

Poppleton continues his adventures, this time experiencing the fear and thrill of boating (and capsizing), motion sickness (and it's cure) from star gazing, and the grandeur of having a brand new bed!

Fun illustrations.
