Kevin Bishop knows chaos. It stares him in the face every day. He's an emergency physician, like his renowned father, and he's trained to help people through their darkest hours. But something's changed. Kevin's losing pieces of himself. He's losing control. In search of a new start, he returns to Long Grove, Illinois, his childhood town, only to find that chaos has followed him. A shocking accident forces his family to deal with unexpected consequences that tests their capacity to heal to the limit. The Bishops are thrown into an abyss, and must find a way to the light. But what they discover when they do is so powerful it will either change the future of medicine or destroy them completely.
T.C. Solomon grew up in Los Angeles, California. Born into a family of actors, T.C. developed a love of storytelling early on that has stayed with him throughout his life.
He attended Northwestern University where he obtained a B.A. in psychology, and now serves as an emergency physician in Southern California.
Kevin Bishop is an Emergency Room doctor and the son of the acclaimed Dr. Greg Bishop. After a couple of missteps (and a procedure gone wrong which was blamed on him but not his doing), Kevin is suspended, and returns home to Long Grove, Illinois, where his father still resides, his son Alex is home from college for the summer, and a job awaits which was procured for Kevin by Greg. While volunteering with his grandfather at the hospital, Alex is attacked and in critical condition, stabbed by a mentally ill patient. Then, something strange happens during the procedure to save Alex’s life which produces an unexpected consequence, and the Bishop family is thrown into a tumultuous state from which they must escape. What they discover has the power to revolutionize the future of medicine, or to destroy them completely.
Though I’m not a fan of the otherworldly/supernatural genre, I found this medical thriller to be a fascinating take on what it means to have a soul. The topic of one having a soul is open to interpretation, mostly based on which religion people were raised or currently practice, if any. This short read explores soul in an innovative way, which, fair warning, may be unethical to some but makes a fascinating statement in the realm of fiction. Some parts of the novel were a bit long, while other chapters were incredible addictive and infinitely readable. The ending is a cliffhanger which could easily support a Part II of this theme. Overall, I think “A Field Within is quite gripping, and could foment many discussions about the theme and its possible ramifications.
I’d like to thank ReedsyDiscovery, T.C. Solomon, and Housolo, LLC for the ability to read and review this ARC.
I never knew who was talking because it changed from paragraph to paragraph. The scenes bounced all over the place and there is no unity. I give one star for the unique plot, but other that that, the book utterly fell flat. Don’t waste your time.
The plot of this book was extremely interesting, giving a good perspective on different ethical issues in the medical field. The book being written in 3rd person made it confusing at times. Loved the 2 storylines that eventually intertwine, and loved the suspenseful ending. I will say, you can tell this was written by a physician versus an author. However, it was still a very interesting read!
A Field Within by T.C. Solomon starts out with readers meeting Kevin. He is an emergency physician that is looking for a change in his life. He has recently changed jobs to start working in a different hospital, hoping for a fresh start. He loves his job and values his career but wants to break away from the chaos that has consumed his life.
He has a college-age son, Alex, who is away following in his father and grandfather's footsteps attending medical school. Alex works at a hospital with Kevin's dad Greg. He learns from him about the ins and outs of working in the medical field. Things aren't always great for Kevin, especially with his ex Susan, Alex's mother. However, he does do his best to try and co-parent with her. Things fall start falling apart rapidly, though, when Alex has an accident. Soon there is a mystery revolving around his recovery. That's when readers meet the test subjects. From here, clues about the work these doctors are doing and what is actually happening in the hospital start to be revealed.
I really enjoyed this book! It had everything in it, from love to mystery and from compassion to a dramatic plot twist. T.C. Solomon excels at character development. The character of Alex is dynamic and will have readers loving him one page, hating him the next, and back again. Kevin was sweet throughout the book, and I liked him with Grace. I really love reading about the test subjects the most. With so many exciting characters, readers will find someone to connect with.
A Field Within is a thrilling psychological medical novel filled with suspense and mystery. Readers will be drawn into the story through the well-written characters and be on edge from the opening pages as the mystery unfolds. With characters that readers will love and hate and a medical mystery that could alter the future, this is one thriller not to miss.
The pace of this book was very slow at times. But at other times hold on for a bumpy ride. This is a sci-fi medical thriller which left me feeling both haunted and anxious for the next book within the series.
The medical ethical and lack of morality within the book's plot left me feeling haunted.
It is a very interesting book which I would definitely would recommend.
I kept wanting the author of the book to go in a different direction in determining the cause for the patient's change in personality. But I will not divulge further information because it would be a spoiler.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
okay so i really wanted to like this one bc i love a good thriller and also it was written by an ER doc but bro this shit was ass. the writing is atrocious and you couldn’t tell who was speaking or who they were conversing with which made it extremely frustrating to follow. i think the premise and idea behind the book was cool and unique but honesty don’t waste your time bc it was poorly edited. on to the next 🫡
I thought this book might be more metaphysical in its premise of exploring what 'soul' means but it dealt with what a physical entity it might be - from a scientific base perspective. Disappointing. My own understanding is that personality, soul, life force (pneuma/ruach/spirit) are all separate but closely intermeshed. inseparable. When one of these elements is ready to leave the body that gives them physicality (usually the life force which gives life to the shell it inhabits), the other elements follow suit. A living entity dies - passes out of the body and makes its way into the realm of Spirit (God/Universal Energy/Light etc).
Personality is part of the living entity which is formed in the brain, not the heart. Nobody can know if personality survives beyond this life but no matter - it serves a crucial purpose in life. As for the more metaphysical musings concerning the other elements, I will simply say that they exist in tandem, indivisible, and may have their home in the heart but they ALL coexist and permeate and infuse the whole body, giving rise to thoughts, feelings, emotions and spiritual experiences.
A soul can't be transplanted. It belongs to the shell it inhabits. Energy life force likewise is particular to the individual but it certainly can connect with that of other living creatures, human and otherwise. Therefore this story made little sense to me. I couldn't suspend my own understanding while I was reading.
I love medical thrillers and this one did not disappoint. The ethical questions involved made it a bit unsettling. The characters were interesting but I'm not sure I liked them. The dual timeline was confusing at first but as the transplant sections developed I understood it better. The story centers around the dysfunctional Bishop family-father Greg, an notable but aging ER physician; son Kevin, also a physician who was fired from his job and returned home to Chicago; grandson Alex, a college student who is working with his grandfather and exploring a career in medicine. Family dynamics and background take up the first part of the book and it moves a little slower. But then the unthinkable happens and the pace picks up to a satisfying if unsettling conclusion. I received a copy of this book from Book Sirens and I am happy to provide this honest review.
Wow! Not what I was expecting and I'm pleasantly suprised!
A fast-paced medical drama that does a phenomenal job of weaving in sci-fi, ethical, and government/military themes. While there weren't many twists and turns, the few that were sprinkled in were shocking enough to make up for it.
This story shows how medicine can heal, but also be used in the wrong hands for experimental evil. With examples of moral/ethical roadblocks, this story also makes you stop to think about what makes us who we are and at what lengths scientific descovery should win over all else.
I found this novel an interesting read. I love to read medical thrillers as this is my favourite genre to read. I found the concept of this novel interesting if a little unbelievable but the author wrote in a engaging and thrilling way and it was a good read.
I liked the character development and the author’s writing style and though this is the first novel by the author which I’ve read so far I’m in no doubt that I will read in the future.
I liked this medical thriller and I’m giving it 4 stars as I’m sure other readers will like it too.
Kevin misses his deceased mother and has memories of her illness. He made mistakes as a doctor which haunts him, and his relationship with his son is strained. A horrible accident sends Kevin's son to the hospital, and Kevin and his father experience dark thoughts. The book is not a casual read; the book is very psychological, and at most times confusing without referring back to the blurb. However, the book is descriptive and delves deep into the characters' souls.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Read on kindle unlimited- I would not recommend listening to this book as it will make it even more difficult to know who is speaking in each chapter. As a whole the book was kind of interesting but kind of meh. I don’t see how this became a number one bestselling thriller on kindle unlimited.
A doctor grandfather tries to save his son by shocking his heart- but he slips- when the shock goes off he sees a blue light. Once the grandson wakes up his entire personality is different. The book goes on to find out what the blue light was and how they can reverse the effects it has had.
Science and religion collide in this fast-paced medical thriller. When medicine advances and cures diseases many people are affected sometimes the aftermath of these cures is not so good and new treatment must be dispensed to the patient. The only problem is when the treatment is used as a weapon against humanity. This story has a great plot, is well-written, and I do hope science does not accomplish what A Field Within describes. I'll be looking forward to reading other books by Mr. Solomon.
As an ER nurse I’m usually skeptical about hospital thriller books as I tend to find them cheesy. This was not the case with A Field Within. Combines modern medicine and an amazing storyline to create a beautiful work of fiction. I enjoyed every page. Loved the soul concept. As an ER healthcare worker we often get stuck treating just the physical and forgetting the soul is just as important. Thanks TikTok for the recommendation!!
It takes a lot for me to DNF a book. In fact, even if I don’t like a book I will force myself to finish it because I made that commitment but I just couldn’t with this book. It was way too confusing, we never knew whose we were reading about and the dialogue made it difficult to understand who was talking or how each of the characters were relevant to the main story line. I really wanted to love this book but it just didn’t do it for me.
I really loved the storyline of this book and thought the concept of merging medicine with philosophy was captivating. It also had one of my favorite elements: multiple POVs that converge at the end. I think it was a great debut novel and, as a nurse, I appreciated reading a book written by another healthcare professional. My only complaint is that dialogue could get a bit confusing at times. Other than that, I couldn’t put it down!
I really really liked the concept of the plot and the ideas and implications surrounding it but the story telling left me dissapointed. The plot was disjointed and the timeline was confusing with weird time gaps that were unexplained. Did the story take place over a month? a year? No idea. The characters felt shallow and so did their interactions and it left me really rooting for no one. I had high hopes but the book just fell flat for me.
This fast-paced, well-written medical thriller is the first book published by a colleague and friend who works with me in the Emergency Department. Very similar to Robin Cook and Michael Crichton, Tom interweaves his medical drama with sci-fi and ethical themes. The writing is excellent and I could readily imagine the characters and scenes of the movie that the book gives life to.
Great concept and interesting story. The only reason I took off a star is because other than Grace, none of the characters were very likable. I understand the concept of flawed human beings but everyone was too much of whatever. Even Grace was too nice but again she was likable. I think the author has tons of potential and another book by him might be even better!
This book was very well written. I felt like I couldn’t put the book down. As a nurse who has worked in the ER, the Medical aspect of the book was accurate and refreshing. I would highly recommend this book, it’s a great quick read due to the fact that it’s hard to put down.
Cons: literally everything else. Horribly written, very difficult to follow despite the simple language. Characters were introduced with no context. Frequent switching between voices without context. Difficult to decipher the timeline on what was happening. It took being about 45% the way through the book to piece together what was actually happening.
This was a surprising read! A medical thriller meets a psychological thriller, and this book is born! This definitely is a well-written one and gripping from the first pages. Loved all the unexpected plot twists. Will be looking for the next book by this author!
I love medical thrillers! This one is a definite page-turner and incredibly hard to put down! The characters were well-developed and the plot twists were excellent. Highly recommend this psychological thriller!

I liked the premise of the book and the moral dilemma was really interesting and thought provoking. I didn't see the ending coming at all, which I enjoyed. I did find the timeline a bit confusing and had to back track a few times to figure out where I was in the story.
I am freaking out! Oh my gosh! I don't want to spoil anything. But holy cow. This was a trip. ok, no, where is the next book... like, don't leave me hanging like this, oh my gosh!
