It was in a design class taught by Michèle Lemieux at the University of Quebec in Montreal that author and illustrator Mélanie Watt created her first picture book, Leon the Chameleon, which was later published by Kids Can Press. Watt went on to create several more books, including the Learning with Animals collection and Augustine, which was named an ALA Notable Children's Book. Watt has also illustrated Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night? and Bearcub and Mama, which won the 2006 IRA Teachers' Choices Project.

Mélanie's best known book Scaredy Squirrel, has won many awards including the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award for Children's Picture Book and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award. The release of Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, was met with enthusiastic reviews and incredible sales, confirming the arrival of kid lit's newest superstar.

Chester,Chester's Back! and Chester's Masterpiece are about a megalomaniac cat who is every bit the antithesis to Scaredy. Chester has already become a bestseller and shows the breadth and creativity of Mélanie Watt.

Scaredy returns to take a few more tentative steps out of his comfort zone in Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach and Scaredy Squirrel at Night. Mélanie has often noted how the Scaredy Squirrel books helped her work out her own insecurities and fears, as the success of these titles has required her to venture out into the unknown, and like Scaredy she has found the experience truly uplifting.

Mélanie currently resides near Montreal, Quebec.

Looking for a great way to start the holiday season? Check out Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive.
I loved how creative Scaredy’s friends are, for example when they make a paper fireplace to cheer Scaredy up because he got scared of the fire. One of my favorite parts of these books are the FAQs at the end, they are a hilarious way to end a book.

I really was hoping that this book would be longer. Other than that this book was perfect. I loved this book so much I would highly suggest this book to other young readers who like humorous books.

Thank you to the Random House Children's, Random House Graphic and NetGalley for the Advanced Copy. All opinions are our own.

Another amazing story of scaredy squirrel.

Scaredy squirrel is preparing for Christmas since June with a foul proof plan, so what could possibly go wrong?
Scaredy has a plan for everything, from the perfect gift to the best Christmas Eve party with his friends.
Another amazing addition from our favourite anxious but loveable squirrel.

My kids absolutely loved this story tonight and can’t wait to have a physical copy to read near Christmas time!

Thank you Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for this advance readers copy.

Scaredy Squirrel returns with his third Scaredy Nutty Adventures book. This has Scaredy and friends preparing for Christmas celebrations. Adventures include decorating with red and green, making a gingerbread house, wrapping presents etc. Scaredy Squirrel books are silly and fun. They are very popular in my elementary school which carries both the traditional picture books and this new format of longer graphic novels. (4.5 Stars)

Another solid addition to the Scaredy Squirrel oeuvre. Getting ready for Xmas is hard but having friends makes it fun and easy. I love the visual engagement of this series. Scaredy is a bit too frenetic for my personal taste but reader response in age appropriate readers is very high.

What a cute Christmas book! I had no idea that there are Scaredy Squirrel series, this was my first encounter with it. The book is just adorable, super cute, and lovely. It does not look or feel like a typical graphic novel usually does, though, so I am not really sure if I would call it a graphic novel or label it as such. An interactive graphic novel maybe? But it was cute and adorable nevertheless!

Melanie Watt’s “Scaredy Squirrel series has long been a staple in my classroom. One for establishing form and tropes, kids find Scaredy Squirrel’s adventures into the unknown reassuring and funny, allowing them to look at their own fears and anxieties in a different light. Watt’s character has many recognizable characteristics including a mild paranoia for the unknown like elves, anxieties around known unknowns like germs, catastrophising, and tried and true coping mechanisms: namely, playing dead. In the end, what is most endearing about Scaredy is that he always perseveres and overcomes his fears, trying new things and meeting friends along the way.

With her new graphic novel series, “Scaredy’s Nutty Adventures, Watt builds onto the world that she has created for Scaredy Squirrel and weaves a more complex and lengthy book which includes more characters and a story that is ultimately more satisfying for Scaredy’s fans. While this series will be appealing to the original target audience (grades 1-4), the humour and interplay between the characters will make it equally appealing to a slightly older audience. “Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive will make a great addition to school and classroom libraries and will make a great Christmas gift.

Teacher Tips

A great transition book for children ready to move to lengthier texts while feeling secure in the characters and story concepts.

Highly engaging dialogue, great for exploring humour.

As a class or in small groups, write your own adventures of scaredy squirrel or in the case of the graphic novel, a missing chapter.

QOTD: Have you read Scaredy Squirrel before? If so, do you have a favourite? or Do you have a favourite holiday children’s story?

Celebrate a classic yet highly structured Christmas with Scaredy Squirrel and his woodland friends in this 2023 graphic novel!
Scaredy Squirrel is a lot like me. He's very anxious. He has to plan things out days, even weeks in advance. Plus if things go wrong, it can trigger a real panic attack. Scaredy Squirrel is ready for Christmas. However, he's kinda terrified that things could go wrong. What if it doesn't snow? What if he gets sick? What if his decorations aren't just all that perfect? These are real fears everyone face every day. Only most people shrug those thoughts off and go on with their day. For those with anxiety disorder like Scaredy Squirrel and myself, these sorts of thoughts are really hard to shake off. Thankfully Scaredy has a trio of good friends who are willing to make it the best Christmas ever!

Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive is based on the series of young reader picture books from Canada starring Scaredy Squirrel. This graphic novel is a step up for early readers, appropriate for those in grades 3-5. The book came out in Halloween. A little early for the holiday season, but available just in time for Christmas.

I had so much fun reading this book. I enjoyed relating my anxieties and internal pressures with the main character. Despite how much I cannot stand having chronic anxiety, I didn't want this graphic novel to end. It not only contains a hilarious group of characters, but there are activities and craft ideas galore. Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive is just one of those cozy little books set during Christmas that sucks you in and you just feel this peace while inside that tiny universe. I highly recommend reading this at night when it's frigid cold, wrapped in a blanket with the house lights down low and with the Christmas lights shining bright.

A must read for every family that loves reading during the holidays. It's a book that will become an annual Christmas tradition as I expect it to be with me from now on

The many fans of this series will be delighted to find a holiday-themed book describing some of Scaredy Squirrel's worst fears. While holidays, especially Christmas, can offer times for reflection, gratitude, and joy, they also can be fraught with anxiety. In the six chapters of this well-designed book, Scaredy Squirrel is overly concerned with his to-do list, decorating with the exact red and green colors he's chosen, wrapping presents, and making a yule log or gingerbread house. It can be challenging to pull all this off, especially when everything has to be perfect. Readers will be entertained by Scaredy Squirrel and his friends, and many of them may see themselves in his behavior. Almost every page evokes a laugh-aloud moment. The idea that Christmas is the time of year to be worried is woven throughout the entire book, which sports many illustrations to add to the reading fun.

I loved this book! When I approach books, I look at it through the eyes of a reader and then as an educator. As a reader, I loved the story. Scaredy has matured somewhat to handle pivots from (his/her) less than perfect expectations. The humor is constant and engaging as a reader. As a teacher, I see all the possibilities for writing. A great mentor text for captions, frames, to-do lists, t-charts, sequencing, diagrams with labels, how to’s and Q & A. Also, there is a page that breaks down each friend and the best gift for them. This is a great example of character building, looking at character traits. Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive is an excellent edition to anyone’s shelf, for all ages and especially the young at heart.

That Scaredy Squirrel! He's back in time to make his preparations for Christmas. And with a little help, or chaos, from his enthusiastic friends, Scaredy can tick off all the items on his Christmas to-do list, such as:
-making decorations (after an unforeseen gigantic snowball accident)
-decorating, not eating, the tree
-making a gingerbread house, guaranteed to last
-wrapping gifts, with the proper amount of tape
-having a party, and
-ensuring Santa feels welcome

Scaredy might always be super anxious, but he's thoughtful, thorough in his planning, and kind. I've been reading his stories for years, and loved this one, too.

If you love Narwhal and Jelly or any of the other Scaredy Squirrel books, you will love Scaredy Squirrel Gets Festive!

In this new book of the Scaredy Squirrel series, Scaredy is trying to celebrate a perfect Christmas with his friends, but things don’t quite go as planned. I love how patient and respectful Scaredy’s friends are! There is a great lesson to be learned by the end of the story.

The illustrations capture the quirky and humorous tone of the story perfectly. This graphic novel is very interactive. Young readers will be entertained from beginning to end.

This one releases in just a few days, October 3, 2023!

Scaredy Squirrel is one of my daughter's favourite series of children's graphic novels. Who wouldn't love reading about a lovable, paranoid and anxious little squirrel who's afraid of everything under the moon. This time, Scaredy is preparing for Christmas ... in June and goes to great length to prepare a fool- proof plan to have the perfect Christmas. What could go wrong?

The illustrations perfectly capture the quirky and humourous tone of the series with equally charming storytelling. Young readers will be entertained from beginning to end.

Another cute addition to the Scaredy Squirrel series. My preschool kids have always loved listening to Scaredy’s stories, and I believe they would love listening to his Christmas adventure. Scaredy is trying to celebrate a perfect Christmas with his friends in this story. His plans don’t go quite as planned along the way, and he learns a lesson because of this. It was such a sweet story that I enjoyed quite a bit. I hope Scaredy gets some more adventures after this. Also, I love how Mélanie uses the graphic novel format for these books.

The latest in Melanie Watt's Scaredy Squirrel series is focused on getting ready for the holidays. Using a graphic novel format that will have a strong appeal to young readers, Watt tells the story in six chapters. In chapter one, the reader sees Scaredy Squirrel's to do list to get to a perfect Christmas Unfortunately, the best made plans do not work out and the reader discovers how Scaredy Squirrel in his buddies overcome their obstacles. The book has a lot of asides readers will enjoy exploring. There are actual practical ideas embedded in the text. Humorous as it celebrates the holiday season, this would be a good book to share at Christmas time.

Scaredy Squirrel wants to make sure Christmas is perfect. So he starts prepping early, he has all the plans in place, he has the friends invited to the party, but will he be able to handle it if things don't go perfectly?

THIS is the Scaredy Squirrel Christmas book I wanted the previous one to be. It is Scaredy in full Scaredy mode for Christmas. The decorations are color coordinated to perfection, and when mayhem ensues (as it is sure to do during the holidays), readers get a laugh, and Scaredy has good friends there to help him make it through. A super fun graphic novel Christmas picture book.

Scaredy has been preparing for Christmas since July. He's made a list, and checked it way more than twice. Now that it's December, he can finally start decorating. His friends come to help -- but will they understand Scaredy's vision of perfection -- or will they bring their own chaos to the holiday?

I've been a fan of Scaredy Squirrel for years, and this holiday story, part of the new graphic novel series, is a great addition! I actually got my copy last year from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers, but in this case, I am a Late Reviewer (sorrysorrysorry). Still, it would be a great gift or festive read for any young Scaredy Squirrel fans you might come across!

Scaredy Squirrel is a favorite in my classroom. We all love seeing how Scaredy tries to plan for everything only to realize that sometimes the best things cannot be planned for. I was excited to get an advanced copy of the next Scaredy Squirrel installment from Netgalley and it did not disappoint.
Scaredy wants to have the PERFECT Christmas with his friends and has to do some compromising. But the Perfect Christmas just needs the perfect friends. I look forward to sharing this book with my class next Christmas season.

Graphic Novel
I received an electronic ARC from Random House Children's Publishers through NetGalley.
Scaredy and his friends are back and getting ready for Christmas. Readers will not be surprised to see how many lists Scaredy has made to get ready for the holiday. His friends pitch in and problem solve when things are not perfect. I appreciate how they accept each other flaws and all. Scaredy may be afraid of almost everything but he shows how much he observes about his friends by choosing perfect gifts for each of them. Looking forward to the next nutty adventure.

Another wonderfully fun book by Melanie Watt about a Scaredy Squirrel that got many kids interested in reading. I love the series and I can't wait to gift this festive story to my nieces and nephews.

I can't wait to see what Scaredy Squirrel gets up to next. Also not part of the review, but I was the cool aunt who got to read this before I went into stores, so thank you because I'm rarely the cool aunt

Another delightfully silly Scaredy Squirrel graphic novel with six short chapters. This time the nervous list-making squirrel is determined to have a perfect Christmas which will include the perfect decorations, perfect gingerbread house, perfect gifts, and perfect get-together. Scaredy's friends want to help and that's when the plans go awry. Although Scaredy does get tense when it doesn't go as planned, in the end he figures out that Christmas is perfect with friends. A wonderful Christmas book!

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC. Kids love Scaredy Squirrel and this newest edition doesn’t disappoint. The longer format lends itself to older elementary students, who still love reading about this beloved character and are ready for more robust books. I’ll continue to purchase any and all Scaredy Squirrel titles! There are running jokes from earlier books and layers of humor that adults will enjoy.

Absolutely adorable addition to the Scardy Squirrel series. Whether you love Scaredy Squirrel or have never read this series, this is an absolute delight. Perfect for getting ready for Christmas time.

It's a "chapter book" in that it's slightly longer than the picture books, but it's the same reading style as the picture books, just a little longer. Will be adding to my library when it releases!

Scaredy Squirrel cracks my kiddo up! I love adding some Christmas themed graphics novels to our collection and this one is cute + funny. This anxious squirrel and his friends are a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. Watching Scaredy over plan Christmas while his friends derail his plans, is a good reminder to go with the flow and always watch out for elves.

Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Another cute addition to the Scaredy Squirrel books. This probably wasn't my favorite and, in thinking over the other books in the collection, it's these longer format books that fall to the bottom in my Scaredy Squirrel ratings. They seem to be somewhere between a picture book and an early reader and that doesn't work as well. Still fun though because it's Scaredy. Maybe I'll grow tired of him but I'm not at that point yet.

This is perfect for fans of Scaredy Squirrel (our anxious, fearful little squirrel), Christmas and critters of all kinds. Scaredy has created a list to create the perfect Christmas and of course things don’t go as planned, but never fear they have great friends to help them out. I thought this graphic novel was the cutest, it has bright, colorful drawings, it’s engaging throughout, and of course is funny.
