The first study of Darwin's influence on one of America's most popular authors. It covers the entire range of John Steinbeck's works from "Cup of Gold" to "America and Americans". Examining both the fiction and non-fiction works from a Darwinian viewpoint, Dr. Railsback demonstrates Steinbeck's careful dramatization of the human as animal.
A little bit too biological for my needs, but the book is a decent jumping off point to locate Social Darwinism in Steinbeck's works. I enjoyed the anecdotes of Steinbeck's life, how critics received and still receive Steinbeck (spoiler: people still hate him), and the little flashes of hope that burn through the book.
