Kara Gillian #3

Secrets of the Demon

Rate this book
Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special she can sense the "arcane" in our world, and there's quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She's also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they're not summoners, and they're not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

To complicate things even more, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons—Demon Lord Rhyzkahl—who helped save her partner's life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she's trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and...mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she's not even sure who—or what—her partners are? Secrets of the Demon is the exciting third installment of the Kara Gillian series.

This is third in a series and has character and plot that build over time. That said, it has been a very long time since I read the other two and I noticed that the author does a fantastic job giving all the needed context. So skipping will miss details, but you still have all the context you need on the page.

I read the other two in the series before I started writing reviews for books. So I have no idea what drew me to them or why I stopped. I'll say that I enjoyed this very much. I liked Kara a lot and her friends were fun, too. And there was lots of good interaction there. I particularly liked the nuanced view of "demons" and how they were alien and self-interested, but not actually "evil". Indeed, the real monster in this story is human.

And the mystery/plot was outstanding, too. I liked the developments. I liked Kara pulling a new person into her circle. And I liked the resolution.

But I won't be continuing the series. Kara is in a very steamy relationship with a demon in this story. And there are hints that it's more than just sex for Rhyzkahl. And yet, Kara has all these yearnings for fellow-agent Ryan. So while there's no cheating, yet, it's pretty close. And frankly, I tend to imprint on relationships when they culminate as much as the current one has and it's pretty clear that it isn't going to be lasting (I might have read blurbs for later in the series just to confirm). My romantic heart doesn't want the turmoil.

On its own, though, this is a solid four stars. Great plot, fast pace, excellent characters. Frankly, it would have been five if the relationship wasn't screaming "broken" while the author tried hard to sell its potential.

A note about Steamy: Kara loves her some demon sex. They do it a lot. We're only on-page for a hand full but it's enough to hit the middle of my steam tolerance.

Yes, I really did just read all 3 books in this series in a row. Yes, they were all amazing. Yes, I am now going absolutely crazy because I have to wait until JANUARY for the next book. I don’t know why I do these things to myself.

As I stated above, ‘Secrets of the Demon this is the third installment in the fabulousness called the Kara Gillian series. I would not recommend reading this review if you have not read books 1 and 2. Unless you don’t plan on reading this series, which is the silliest thing I’ve ever heard, but if you don’t plan on reading the series then feel free to read potential spoilers.

This story starts picks up a few months after the end of . Kara is pledged to Rhyzkahl, the most powerful Demon Lord, to be his summoner where she is required to summon him at least once a month for 3 years. She’s already completed approximately 3 months of her service to him at this point. Rhyzkahl has always thrown me a bit with the descriptions of him. Now see, when I read that he’s a ‘Demon Lord, I don’t know about you but I think of something along the lines of:

But then that’s where Diana Rowland throws a curve ball. “He shook his white blond hair back to send it rippling in a perfect silken fall down his back. You see, he looks like a human. But ever since she introduced him with his ‘white blond hair that rippled down his back I can’t help picturing this guy:

And it drives me absolutely bonkers. Because I don’t actually like him. But whatever, my problem.

Then there’s Ryan, the other man in Kara’s life. Ryan or now known from the last book as a kiraknikahl, or oathbreaker. Oathbreaker sounds much better since I have no idea how on earth that first term is pronounced. Kara has as of yet been unable to determine what an oathbreaker is but more is revealed in this book. If you’ve been irritated like me and just want to know what the hell he is you’ll be rewarded with this installment. Although I will say, it was nice that the readers were given bit by bit prior to the big reveal rather than figuring it out right off the bat. Love me a little bit of mystery.

Speaking of Ryan or Ryan and Kara’s relationship/friendship. *sigh* REALLY?? As I said in my review of book 2, these two really just need to get over themselves, admit they have feelings for each other, and stop acting like junior high kids. They would be much happier together. I would be much happier too. Although I will say, it’s nice to see a pair of characters that actually have to work at their relationships and overcome various obstacles rather. I think it’ll make their future relationship (if that ever happens) very real to me.

Yet another fabulous book from Diana Rowland. I will be recommending her Kara Gilliand series to anyone who will listen to me. I will wait patiently sullenly for .

I've noticed a trend in myself. Urban Fantasies, in general, require a bit of time and investment in order to start really liking them. I suppose this might be very commonplace, but at least for me, it's like there's a period of adjustment before I really start loving the characters and situations.

It's not a complaint. It's just an observation.

Kara Gillian, detective and demon summoner, is starting to get under my skin. :)

I liked this book more than the first two, but as I said, it's probably because it finally seeped in and now I'm just rocking along. I had the same kind of reaction with Anita Blake and Rachel Morgan and Harry Dresden, too. :) Stick with it long enough and everything becomes bigger than life. :)

Enough reflection. Onto the reaction!

I got my D&D monster manual out and started nodding along to the descriptions. I likey. It's a bit more exciting dealing with an outright than the other assumption. And to think that someone is breaking up the band in such a way! It's a fun mystery.

But where the book really shines is in the continued character developments and how Kara fits in with the force. I'm really liking her Captain even if he just feels like an extreme goofball. And the reveal at the end? Totally delicious.

Yeah. I have a soft spot in my heart for popcorn fiction like this. Easy, fast, and fun. And for the rest of you out there that like hot and steamy action, it's here too. :) See? Something for everyone! :)

3.5 Fun series, great potential.

Worth reading, despite the confusing reviews out there. What's the worse that could happen...right?

I usually don't do reviews for books that are later-in-the-series BUT I'm going to make a plea to a particular group of readers:

1) If you enjoyed book 1 but didn't think it was the greatest OR
2) If you enjoyed book 1 and 2 but found youself slightly bored

THEN

You must continue with the series and try book 3.

Book 3 was so much better than book 1 and 2. I LOVED it. I seriously wasn't even going to continue with the series. I'm pretty hard on series books. I want each book to be a complete book and not just a continuing story without a real beginning and end. This book seriously was so much better than what I expected.

Oh, and if you haven't read this series, go get youself book 1, and book 2 and get reading. Whatever you need to do, go do it and get your butt over to book 3.

Another amazing book to this series, we have finally reached five stars. It's one of those where the books keep getting better. It's a strange trend in Urban Fantasy with me this year - almost every series, the third really starts blowing me away.

The mystery plot is brilliant - the author certainly has an incredible imagination to be able to come up with so many story lines that are different, have nothing to do with the other books story lines, and are always as interesting as the others. This one was of course unique, and the cast of suspects were entertaining. The ending was a surprise.

Personal wise, love the addition of the bodyguard demon, Ryz is still hot as ever, there's still that unsolved mystery situation with Ryan, and I truly do dig the police atmosphere the author dishes out for this series.

Instead of answering questions readers have been dying to know, this one actually just brings up new ones that we now are dying to know, too. I'm curious as hell about Tessa and her little slip now. Even more confused on Kara, Ryan, and what/who they are...and what Ryz wants. More and more elements which leave me wondering, but also leave me anxious to keep reading this fun, inventive, fresh series. The ending is a surprise.

There was something that did bug me about this one. I'm no prude and urban fantasy is typically a genre where a truck driver would feel welcome language-wise, but the author has noticeably dirtied Kara's mouth to an extreme degree. She always cussed, sure, but this time it was overdone and just forced seeming, out of character and a turnoff. We don't need the f word twice a sentence and it didn't fit for the heroine. Am happy to say, after reading the next book, that the author returned to original Kara, yipee. Not sure if this one was a fluke with that or she changed her mind on the changes she was trying to make.

Overall the best of the first three so far, making me eager to continue the series.

Demon Summoning Has Less Vomiting!
Beaulac, Louisiana homicide detective Kara Gillian is in New Orleans, working a case with the multi-jurisdictional task force she's recently joined with FBI Special Agents Ryan Kristoff and Zachary Garner. The task force deals with white collar and "financial crimes"...also known as crimes having a supernatural or paranormal element. The lead singer of the Goth rock band Ether Madhouse has been receiving threats that a demon is intent on eating her soul during her last concert on the tour, so Kara, Ryan, and Zach have joined forces with NOPD detective Marco Knight to stake out the concert, Kara on high alert for any trickles of arcane power.

When the singer is snatched suddenly by something that is definitely not a demon...nor anything else Kara had ever experienced before...the potential publicity stunt takes a dark turn, and any pleasure at rescuing the lead singer is quickly squashed when bodies start turning up surrounded by fields of arcane dissonance that match the one she felt during the singer's abduction, but doesn't match any sort of power with which Kara is familiar. And she can't stop what she doesn't understand.

As the body count rises and the search for answers gets overshadowed by a growing number of tough questions, Kara's job gets infinitely more dangerous. A new wave of power is rising and this time, the thick, oily sense of evil intent is directed at her, and it's the sort of power she's not strong enough to withstand.

I love this series! Kara Gillian is one of my favorite ongoing-series heroines in the genre right now for the very fact that she's so wonderfully normal in all aspects but one: she can summon demons from the demon realm, an alternate universe that brushes against ours. These are not hell and brimstone monsters, either, but different species with various levels of intellect and power that are bound by a strong code of honor. I love the mythos and world building Rowland has created for this series, and I adore the mix of solid police procedural and urban fantasy roller coaster.

But Kara is definitely the driving force of the woman-love I feel for this series. I love that she's got body image issues, isn't a fan of working out (her approaching PT test is enough to give her hives when she thinks about it), and thinks a healthy breakfast is a couple of chocolate donuts and a mug of brew. I think it's fantastic that she's nearly friendless (though that's improving as the series goes along) and hasn't had a relationship with a man last for more than a handful of months...either of the two times she's had a relationship at all. Okay, true, maybe that's not fantastic for her, but for me as a reader, I find her ultimately sympathetic and ever so easy to relate to. She's a little neurotic, a bit insecure - and acknowledges it, and though she's a tenacious bloodhound and a hell of a detective when it comes to solving a case, and would give up her life protecting people she cares about, she's far from a know-it-all and has huge gaps in her understanding of even the forces she is able to manipulate and the magic she can wield. She's an Everywoman of the highest and most well-defined order and I love reading about her.

deserves a lot of woman-love from me, too. Her ability to blend the mundane and the arcane is stellar, and her gift for dropping taunting little teasers in the overall series plot arc as she slowly but thoroughly embellishes and defines that arc is maddeningly brilliant. She answers some questions in that have been plaguing me since the first book, , but still manages to drop more questions into the mix that are just as dastardly. Damn her!

Yet for all that, I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the previous two for a few reasons. There were some aspects of the police procedural plotline that I had some trouble with in this book - and that's a first for me with the series. I just didn't find the idea of some sort of magical construct picking off members of a goth band all that compelling and the time Kara spent following the trail without Ryan and Zach around dragged for me because of it. Well, it did right up until Kara suddenly came under direct fire from an unknown arcane force...the book picked up for me from there. And then rocketed to a very satisfying and plot-twisty conclusion. Still.

I also had, for the first time, a few issues with Kara herself. The just friends/more than friends angst between her and Ryan really got on my nerves in this book, and there was a lot of it - or it felt that way, anyway. It is the one issue that really has the ability to turn Kara into a petulant sixth grader who lacks appeal. Her internal monologue about Ryan and their relationship and her behavior during key moments smacks of a level of immaturity and insecurity that's hard to read by the fifth, sixth, twelfth, and twentieth time I come across it. And though Kara gets points for acknowledging that she's being really immature and insecure, it doesn't alter the fact that I don't like reading about it every time Ryan is a part of a scene. That and a too-healthy dose of hypocrisy really turned me off when a question about a Ryan/Jill hookup popped up. Considering Kara's ongoing relationship with Rhyzkahl I had a big problem with that. I loathe hypocrisy. And I'm none too keen on never-ending love triangles either (um...not that Rhyzkahl is a love match exactly, but...well...you know what I mean). For me, those Kara issues were the most serious of the detractors in this book.

My only other issue wasn't really an issue so much as a curiosity. Kara's language in this book, most notably when she's conversing with her best friend Jill, seemed far more graphic than I remember her being in the first two books. I haven't gone back to check to see if I'm misremembering something, so it's entirely possible I'm off base here, or that the language was an indication of their deepening relationship, but I found it jarring at times. I don't have a problem with coarse language. I use coarse language all the time (don't tell my mother that, though - apparently no age is old enough for the "F" word with that woman). I just found it jarring in relation to what I've come to know about Kara in the previous books.

I gotta say, though, regardless of the issues I had, the ending of this book rocks. There were plot twists I wasn't expecting and answers to questions that had me reeling, and the implication of those answers are mind boggling. The addition of some awesome secondary characters have a ton of potential for juicy development and I'm thrilled to get a chance to see more of them. And as usual, I loved every aspect of every scene and every mention of Rhyzkahl. He's just a whole lotta yum wrapped in an enigmatic, morally questionable, and pleasantly terrifying package.

proved to me that the world Rowland has created and plot she has in mind for it are still expanding in utterly delicious ways. I can't wait to continue this series (their may be frothing at the mouth...just ignore that)!

Diana Rowland has become one of my most favored authors to read. After reading three consecutive books in a row that kept me hooked throughout each one and all having endings that had me whispering to myself "Oh, sh*t! I need more!" while scrambling to find out about the next book, yeah I'd say this is a most favorite series, bar none.

Secrets of the Demon was made into a page turner from the pace set by the mystery surrounding the case Kara is investigating surrounding several murders. The romance takes a back seat in this one with a lot emotional guessing for Kara in that department. But by the way the story was written, I didn't even notice until after I finished reading this novel, in retrospect, that the romance wasn't one of the bigger points in this story. However we do get a lot more clues to some of the other main characters, which deepens and arouses my curiosity even further then before. The wait for the next book is going to be long for me. Yep, a seriously long wait because the ending for this one, is BIG. I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

If you enjoy dark urban fantasy, real to life forensics, mystery, magic and complicated love triangles, this series is one for you. Make sure you start with the first book because each book contributes to the overall story arc of this series.

First of all, YES I like this cover. It's really REALLY good. It doesn't make me embarrassed to pick up this book (even though I read these on ebook so it's irrelevant. But it makes me more proud of the genre for sure).

Anyhoo this was a good book, another fine installment in a really fine series. I do have to say I'm MUCH more interested in what's going on with all the demon intrigue rather than the cop stuff which I read MUCH quicker, but it tied in nicely and HOLY HELL CLIFFHANGER MUCH?!?! Ryan just got interesting. (I'm still team blonde-hunky-demon FYI though). Read the second one immediately after, will list it after this, but definitely enjoying where the series is going. LOVE the new demon bodyguard, I mean, just the best character to add to the mix EVER.

4.5 stars, I just love this series. My favorite thing is that Kara is both a real woman and very firmly the hero of these books. She's a regular woman, not a superhero, she's vulnerable, gets her feelings hurt, gets frightened, eats comfort food, has a temper, is just totally real. And she doesn't turn to anyone to solve her problems. So many fantasy books, especially those with hot demons, have the heroine "forced" into letting the demon solve everything for her, and then she gets to be grateful to him and lovey dovey yada yada. Kara is gradually forced to ask Rhyzkahl for help, but it happens slowly and logically and she does have real doubts about his intentions, not showy doubts like in so many other books. And when she accepts help, it doesn't end up taking away her power, she's still completely fierce and the center of the story. The same thing goes for Ryan, and for her other work colleagues, when she works with people she works with people, but they don't overtake her.

I also like the character development across the series, including the supporting characters. For example, her sergeant, Cory Crawford, has had a good story arc of his own as he's gone from a bit of a hard ass to a caring guy and honest cop just trying to deal with this crazy stuff.

Another thing that makes the book and the series great is the details, they're perfect without being cumbersome. It's small things like when one of the bodies was found in the middle of thick bushes and Kara laughs when the coroner's driver shows up with lopping sheers but asks if anyone has a chainsaw; it's a brief moment but it shows the realism and the background that the author has both as a policewoman and as a morgue assistant to put moments in that just ring true. Also, I really appreciated that moment more because I recently read the author's , a very different style book with it's young, sarcastic heroine, but also filled with a lot of heart, and it sure made me sensitive to the plight of morgue drivers!

Finally, I loved the cover, the publishers finally got it right by acknowledging that the books are about a kick-butt police woman and not paranormal romance. Kara is the star, it's intense urban fantasy with a romantic element, like most urban fantasy. I'm not saying that the demon isn't hot, because he is. Kara's having some fun with him too, woo hoo! And the triangle with Ryan is tense, if slow to build. But that's one aspect of the story only and I really appreciate that it's building slowly and really showing a great part of Kara's growth as this recently isolated woman becomes more experienced at juggling having dear friends, colleagues that she can depend on, and pretty serious romantic interests as well. I'm glad that the cover finally reflects that Kara is primarily a police woman who happens to be an arcane practitioner, and that the book is mostly about her trying to solve a case, not about her being sexy with someone as the previous two covers seemed to imply.

Long review, sorry! Summary - Kara's the center of the story and a terrific hero, read the books.

I loved the ending of this book!

The journey is pretty good too. But I feel like this is one of those stories that builds and builds. It drops great little breadcrumbs along the way. Then boom! It drops a great old bomb on you at the end that makes you want to toss your real life onto the back-burner, so you can pick up the next installment. If you are thinking about jumping into this series, by the way, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. You could enjoy this book as a standalone, but the continuing threads are what ratchet the excitement to the next level.

As the story begins, Kara is working on the special task force with Zach and Ryan. She is about three months into her three-year binding to Rhyzkahl, and Ryan is none too happy about it. Despite this, the two of them are still doing their do we want to be more than friends? dance, and honestly, it’s starting to get on my nerves. Anyone with eyes can tell Ryan and Kara are totally into each other, but then there is that pesky demon lord she is still sleeping with and Ryan’s obvious secrets. So maybe it’s not so simple. But it SHOULD BE, darn it!

Anyway, the gang is on assignment in New Orleans, investigating a possible demonic threat against a band from their hometown. Sure enough, someone –or something attacks the lead singer and the gang only saves her by the skin of their teeth. When they get back home, they realize young Lida isn’t the only victim. In fact, she is the lucky one; she’s the only victim who has survived. Kara has to figure out what the victims have in common, who is directing their killer –and why.

If that weren’t enough, something is targeting Kara too, and it looks like her relationship with Rhyzkahl is to blame. So there is tension there. There is tension with Ryan. There is even tension with her aunt. Poor Kara is kind of a mess, which is kind of one of the things I like about her. She is smart and a good cop and a skilled summoner, but she is a stupid human just like the rest of us when it comes to relationships. She struggles with how to be a friend to Jill and how to interact with Ryan when she wants him, but doesn’t know if he wants her. It’s so easy to relate to, despite all of the supernatural and over the top danger going on all around them.

As always, Diana Rowland does a fantastic job blending the police procedural with all the paranormal happenings. I never figure the mysteries out on my own, but Kara makes total sense when she does it. The pacing is good. The dialogue is good. But honestly, the best part is the unfolding dynamic with Kara, Ryan, and Rhyzkahl. Rowland is slowly giving us answers, but they are only making me hungrier for more. That’s a sign she is doing something right! (And a sign I will lose my mind if I can’t find out what happens next.)

I would be going so crazy right now if I had to wait for book 4. Instead, I’m jumping into that bad boy right now.

I would recommend these books.

Best. Installment. Yet.

I can honestly say, this series is more than freshing, and always on my top list. I really enjoyed both "Mark of the Demon" and "Blood of the Demon", but I have to say, I loved "Secrets of the Demon."

If you haven't read the first to novels in this series, then I suggust you do before reading this novel. You'll get quite lost with the characters actions and backgrounds, not to mention to tension between some characters. Even if it was a stand alone novel, I'd recommend you read them all, because they're such a good read.

"Secrets of a Demon" starts with Kara at a club, listening to music outside her comfort zone. She's there on duty, investigating a threat to the bands singer Lida. Quicky in, the action starts, with a kidnapping attempt, and a whole lot of questions.
Kara and Detective Ryan Kristoff are still tense with eachother, or at least Ryan is with her. Things with them seem to be at arms length, but neither seem to really want it that way.

Demon Lord Rhyzkahl has interest in Kara, and athough she doesn't want to admit it, he interests her right back. Interests her enough to say yes to much he says or asks... If you catch my drift. ;) Shes starting to enjoy his company, but she still has strong feelings for Ryan, if only they could act on them.
Then there's Ryans secret. What's so big that he can't tell Kara? Sure everyone has their secrets, but Ryans seems to be a doozie.
And if that doesn't seem to be enough, now there's a murderer, that seems to be out for the band and it's members. Kara doesn't seem to have it easy with this case. Espeically when people want it hushed, including the mayor. But when does Kara ever have it easy, right?

This was jam packed with exciting twists, odd magic, suspence and senuialty. I hate that it ended, and I'm left begging for more. As endings go, it could NOT have been better. The last page of the novel is brilliant! I tip my hat to you Mrs. Rowland.

I put off reading this book because I just wasn’t very interested, but when I finally did pick it up, I devoured it in less than two days. It was fast paced, fun, and exciting - an enjoyable read. Some of the mysteries surrounding Zach and Ryan finally get cleared up, and even though I called the final bombshell long before it dropped, one of the revelations did manage to surprise me. As with the previous books, the answers you get only raise more questions, stringing you along just enough to make you want to read the next installment.

As always, I sympathize with Kara because she’s a realistic heroine. She’s got deep seated insecurities and trust issues, but she’s dedicated and doesn’t give up. Even though she’s angst personified in this book, I still like Kara because I can understand her emotions. She has enough self-awareness to recognize when she’s acting childish and immature, making her that much more human and relatable.

The plot was pretty good, but the villains seemed cartoonish, coming out of nowhere at the end to reveal their dastardly plans before attempting to eliminate the good guys. In fact, the whole resolution seems like it was tacked on. Like in the last book, another supporting character comes to accept the supernatural. Though I love seeing this person in the loop and on Kara’s side, his okay-ness with the arcane seems unrealistic.

Secrets of the Demon is a quick, fun read that I would definitely recommend if you enjoyed the first two books in the series. There’s action, interesting developments in the continuing mystery, sexy scenes with Rhyzhahl, and the introduction of a new character who’s going to make Kara’s life even more complicated. Though the individual story arcs of each book are somewhat forgettable, it’s easy to be drawn in by the characters and the unique blend of urban fantasy and police procedural. I’m interested to find out more about Zach and Ryan’s backstory, Rhyzhahl’s plans, and Kara’s fate, so I will probably read the next book in the series.

This series just keeps getting better and better!Ìý It’s not only the current mystery Kara and her new FBI task force are rushing to solve to stop more deaths; it has so many twist and turns, you can’t even begin to guess who the bad guys are.Ìý You think you know, but it just blows you away, when they are revealed at the end!Ìý Oh no, that’s not the best part about this series.Ìý It’s the underlying backstory that’s going on with Kara, Ryan, and the Demon Lord.Ìý What is Ryan, and will he and Kara just PLEASE hurry up and see their chemistry, and get together! OMG the sexually chemistry is KILLLING me! I find myself yelling at this audiobook, “KISS HIM! You big dummy! UGHH!â€ What is the Demon Lords endgame? He is playing at something, but who knows, there is so much back story going on, needless to say, you cannot start on this book.Ìý Go back start from the beginning.

Police Procedural Lacking as Demon World Expands

3.5 Stars The police procedural aspect of this book was lacking, but the overall book scored as the demon world of Kara Gillian expanded. In this installment the a rock star is in danger, but I could have cared less about the how and the why. I got Kara and her gang as the urban fantasy world expanded. There was a lot of talking about the music business, which for me could have been cut but the urban fantasy was spot on as the nature of demons was expanded on. Kara is sometimes clueless but she isn't an action hero star so that clueless nature seems natural. The how and the why of the paranormal baddies was weak, but if I could have only scored the non police procedural the book world have been higher rated because I do enjoy the core characters and the ever expanding world. The book does have some shocking revelations.
Kara and Rhyzkahl are still knocking boots as she pines for Ryan. At least Kara is getting her itches scratched by an excellent demon lover, despite him having killed her GRANNY!

Kara Gillian is a homicide detective who can sense the "Arcane" and summon demons. Each book has a stand alone murder case with paranormal elements. Slightly darker UF than most but it's a believable world and you can't help but feel for Kara. The paranormal isn't a widely known fact so she has grown up keeping her distance from people on the whole due to her 'weirdness'. As each book progresses we get to see more insight into her and the circumstances that make her who she is. I'm full of questions and need the next book like... NOW! There's so much going on with the other charcter's and people who you just don't know which side they are on. I love it when you can't figure out a who-dunnit right away. I must admit that the stories are starting to take second place to the characters in this one.

:) I feel all energised now... What an ending! :)

This series is getting better. I did have to take a break from this book and come back. I don’t care much for the in depth explanations for what happened previously. I do love the police/supernatural mix. I feel this book concentrated too much on the police side of it though. I wanted more demons/supernatural. The ending half saved this book. I’m hoping the next book takes off right where this one ended.

Prob 3.5 stars - felt like there was some good character development here. I already purchased the next few audiobooks in this series so I'm sure I'll be listening to those. I like the audiobook narrator for this series.

I love and hate this book at the same time. I'm torn between 4 and 2 stars.
You may think, How the heck can I get confuse with 2 or 4 stars?

Huh! If I knew that then I wouldn't be confused now would I?

For the sake of my own sanity, Let's try the column A, column B method.

In A corner is the reason for giving it 4 stars.

* At the top of the list is the 'unknown' reason of the confusion.
How many books can make you feel so conflicted?
It doesn't matter that the reason is unknown but the very fact that this book managed to confuse the hell out of me says a lot. If it's a boring book, who gives a damn?

* Rhyzkahl. Need I say more? Fine. He's a level 2 Barrons. Need I say more? uh uh.

* Good writing. I know this is suppose to go on top because without tasteful writing style all the other factors won't matter but if you're given a choice, poetic writing versus dirty smex with smoking hot man? Oh come on?!

* Kara Gillian. The protagonist. She isn't very special. I mean, she can't raise the dead. instead of a sword she uses a gun which doesn't do a damn thing against her enemies. She's not even a bad ass like Cat, Merit or Anita *ew* Blake. And most specially men don't fall on her feet and promises their soul in exchange for eternal smex. She's one of the most (if there's more) realistic character in modern fiction. Most of the time I hate the truth of reality giving voices in my fantasy novels but excessive narcissism or Mary Sue is too excessive for my liking. The thing that I most adore about Kara Gillian is her not so always flat stomach and hatred for running.
Not a Mary Sue yet not a TSTL. With today's PNR/UF novels overpopulation of these types, Kara Gillian should be given a BIG medal.

* The mystery. I'm not a big fan of apocalyptic possibilities in a mystery but even though in 3 books so far the consequence of failing is almost that, it still manage not to confuse or get too much complicated so it's a relief to my poor limited thinking capacity. The villain's identity always surprise me but not in a staggering way like- where the heck did he come from? but more like *groans* how can I miss that?
The other part of the mystery where the root of the series plot is is what confuses the heck out of me however. There's some juicy hints thrown by bits in all 3 books which so far only manage to tickle my interest to continue on the series It's near the boundary of interesting and frustrating. But if this continue on I will call Foul Ms. Rowland and point cliff hanger even without sufficient proof.

So be a good girl and give the juicy details sooner

In Corner B A.K.A Nag Corner

* After my fanatic blabbing I realize there really isn't any reason for me to resort to blackmail and giving 2stars to a novel I enjoyed. I mean if you remove Rhyzkahl (Don't you dare!) it's still good enough for a 3 so the 2 star threat is just me being a bitch. HUGE SIGH

However
I still have an issue about Kara's internal monologue. It isn't as annoying as it was in book 2. It wasn't really worth mentioning if you don't read the books in succession but since I did that I'll try not to nag too much about it and just hope that it won't be too annoying. I've read that Rowland plans to write 8-9 Kara Gillian books and it would be best if her internal war is resolved soon. I really hate characters second guessing their self or their feelings esp. in a yet non-existence love triangle and I had this experience in the Blood of the Demon. She still had this in Secrets of the Demon but I have more sympathy because of the character Ryan is becoming. There really isn't much to say anymore. It's just this internal monologues of Kara maybe the one that will tip the balance in the fun-annoying/frustrating boundary line I was talking about. The mystery surrounding Ryan has just become significant in the 3rd book that the possible love triangle is tolerable right now. I don't like him. There have been hints since the first book that he's more than what he is and may be a rival to Kara's heart and his being unaware concept is interesting but I would prefer him to end up being like a good Vlane. Or maybe Darroc? Not necessarily evil just different point of views clashing. I get why some other fans may be Team Ryan but I have this annoying tendency to root for the first guy on the scene and every hints I see is in favor for that first guy so I'm Team Rhyzkahl. This is the main reason I didn't continue on the Anna Strong Chronicles. We'll see perhaps but right now I'm ready for the next book.

**Note** First of all, YES, I am reading this out of order thanks to my stupid arsehead library making idiotic choices in what books they ordered first. Second, I think I found another female heroine I can actually grow to enjoy. Kara Gillian is definitely one to watch. She has a funny attitude, while being really good at her job. Unfortunately, however, it appears those around her have some serious secrets they are trying to keep to themselves, and you would think that after 3 books, most of these secrets would have come out by now.

A breakdown of what I learned from this book, seeing as I have to wait patiently for the next books to be available ::shrug::

Kara Gillian is a Homicide Detective from Beaulac, Louisiana. She works with FBI Special Agent Ryan Kristoff and his partner Zachary Garner in a special task force that deals with financial malfeasance. In this book, they are looking into the threats made towards the lead singer, Lida Moran of Ether Madhouse. Kara made a bargain with a demon king named Rhyzkahl in order to save Ryan's life, something HE, has serious issues with. Now, Kara is bound to said demon (she wears his mark on her left forearm) and said demon is described as being a cover model for a very hot romance novel. Ok, that explains the sparks that fly when the two are together every 28 days. Kara is expected to summon said demon every 28 days, or during the full moon. She is bound to him for 3 years, and can ask him 2 questions, and 2 questions only. After that, he returns to demonland. Kara has the ability to detect when someone is using arcane powers, and it also seems that someone in demonland, IE a Demon King, has been trying to summon her away from Rhyzkahl, who sends different demons to help her, and protect her like Eilahn who saves Kara's life at the climax of this story. Over the course of this book, Kara finds herself up to her ears when dead body's pile up and someone is making Golem with earth elemental magic. Luckily for Kara, she has some really good friends to back her up.

Jill Faciane is a crime scene investigator, her running partner, and basically only real friend. I like the interaction between the two characters and hope to see more when Sins of the Demon releases in 2012.

Secrets: Ryan - demons call him Kiraknikahl, or oath breaker. He seems to be some kind of demonic being of some sort, and this book left open several questions on his powers, and the name he is called, but which doesn't appear in the book. Interesting puzzle you have left us with Ms Rowland. I know from reading this book alone, that Kara saved his soul from the Symbol Man. Ryan seems to be protected by his partner/guardian? Zachary, who is actually a demon, but is somehow oath bound not to discuss anything relating to Ryan. Ryan, I think, wants a deeper relationship with Kara, but she is bound to a demon he has no use for. Call it Jealously 101 or the Richelle Mead factor where one woman, has to make a decision about two men.

Sgt Crawford, Kara's PD boss, is someone I can only wish I could work for. He seems very supportive of Kara, and even gets involved in the arcane investigation in the climax of the book. He also takes crap from noone, not even the mayor who demands that Kara stop her investigation, and then threatens to fire her. I love the cell phone recording feature don't you?

In summary; This is about really about Michael Moran, and his ability to call on the earth elementals and create Golems. It is also about his sister Lida Moran and her desire to be rich beyond dreams and to kill anyone who gets in her way, which basically includes anyone who has anything to do with Ether Madhouse, a band she's the lead singer for.

Questions: Who is Marco Knight of the NOPD, and what is he really? He makes a statement, and then kind of leaves in a hurry afterwards. "Sometimes the punishment fits the crime far too well." Is this about Ryan? If not Ryan, then who?

I want to know more about Aunt Tessa and whether or not she had a baby before Kara came in the picture. She makes a reference to it when she asks if Kara and Rhyzkahl are planning on having demon children. Kara is stunned, but then questions the true meaning behind being bound to Rhyzkahl, and what his real plans are. I also want to learn more about the two weeks that Kara spent in the void before being called back. Did that have anything to do with manifesting her powers?

This story could be considered as a murder-mystery, or a supernatural-romance depending on when you pick up the storyline from. I'm definitely continuing this series.

(Review originally published at :)

So, it’s official–this series just keeps getting better and better. Secrets of the Demon continues to build upon the first two books of the Kara Gillian series–Mark of the Demon and Blood of the Demon–following in the same tradition of combining police procedural with paranormal intrigue and a dash of romance.

Though a direct second sequel, this book is can function well enough as a standalone title, no easy task to carry out. Relevant background information is presented quickly and strategically, setting aside enough time to properly orient new readers without slowing down the story. A happy side effect of this is that it’s possible to read Secrets seamlessly after a long hiatus from the previous titles, particularly due to the subtle inclusion of little inside gags and innocuous references. Even for a not-so-long hiatus, the background info is not overwhelming or tedious for fans.

More than ever before in this series, there’s an infusion of the main mystery/procedural with paranormal elements. In the first two books, Kara was the key that brought the supernatural to her police work, as something that was vaguely helpful to her cases. Here, the supernatural is cropping up everywhere, enough to provide a true challenge to her in every aspect of her life. As always, the mystery element provides an entertaining brain tease. The red herrings are subtle yet diverting, and there’s enough balance of investigation and action to keep things interesting. The standout element in my mind, though, is still how convincingly the author can merge subgenres. You get a legit procedural along with unique UF/PNR.

Speaking of subgenres, the PNR aspect is back and in full effect! Even so, while I thoroughly enjoyed the romance, I personally found some difficulty in reconciling the extremely perceptive Kara with the clueless, vaguely doormat behavior she at times exhibited as part of the love…shape (is it a triangle? A straight line? A wavy line?!). This is someone who catches the most subtle of behavior in others. The unapologetic, hardworking, committed badass. So for me, some of the pendulum-like inner musings and “wait, so does that mean he likes me? moments were slightly confounding. That said, the feeling did fade with time. And in any case, Kara carries a story very well and is fun to watch develop.

Both major and minor characters are very well fleshed out in this tale–In fact, at times, the secondary characters provided the best laughs and the most vigorous nods of agreement. Sarge and his dry wit…Jill and her sage advice (you go, girl!). The author takes care with all characters…and she takes her time.

Boy, does she ever take her time. ^_^ I must say, reading this book and this series is a lot like watching the show Lost–you simply *must* resign yourself not finding out major secrets, or else you’ll drive yourself to the limits of frustration and back. (Though, I guess with a title like Secrets of the Demon, I guessed we’ve been warned.)

As has become a hallmark for this series, the last act is thrilling, addictive, and quite unexpected. And overall, Secrets of the Demon is quite a lot of fun, with plenty of content to make you want to reread, and enough juicy teasers to have you pining for the next installment. Sure, you can read this book without having tried the first two but you’ll be hard pressed to stop at the end of this tale.

. . .

Verdict:
With Secrets of the Demon, it seems Diana Rowland has settled into her characters and storytelling style, and is showing she’s got a master plan for the series. Still, it’s a very accessible book for newcomers. All signs point to this being a series that gets better with every installment.
