Sometimes love just catches you by the tail

Chayton Winston is a veterinarian. He is also a werewolf. Much to his Native American parents chagrin, he has always dreamed of a fair-haired, Caucasian mate. However, he never imagined his mate would be male. As a heterosexual man, he’s not quite sure what to do with a male mate, but more than willing to find out.

Keaton Reynolds wakes up, in wolf form, and finds himself with a mate. He’s instantly attracted, but not so thrilled to find out the man is straight. Having been in a relationship once before where his partner professed to be “Not gay left a bad taste in his mouth. Keaton wants to make a break for it and pretend he never set eyes on Chay—but Chay is not ready to let him go.

Together the two work to solidify their shaky relationship and battle the prejudices against homosexuals. Chay must deal with not only his mother’s prejudices against gay men but also her hatred of white people. When a power struggle in Keaton’s pack threatens Keaton’s life, the two men learn to depend on one another and their relationship to get them through it.

Warning, this title contains the explicit sex, graphic language, violence and hot man-love.

About the author

J.L. Langley

JL has been talking since she was about seven months old. To those who know her it comes as no surprise, in fact, most will tell you she hasn’t shut up since. At eighteen months, she was speaking in full sentences. Imagine if you will the surprise of her admirers when they complimented her mother on “what a cute little boy she had and received a fierce glare from said little boy and a very loud correction of “I’m a girl! Oddly enough, JL still finds herself saying that exact phrase thirty-some-odd years later.

Along with the motormouth, JL also displayed a very vivid imagination and artistic ability. The artist first surfaced in way of drawing and painting, then became more apparent with dance. JL was a member of the National Art Honor Society in high school and has won several regional and national titles in dance, specifically tap and jazz. In college she majored in Graphic Art, but chose to make dance her profession. She taught tap, jazz and ballet for fifteen years before settling into her career as a writer.

Today JL is a full-time writer, with over ten novels to her credit. Among her hobbies she includes reading, practicing her marksmanship (she happens to be a great shot), gardening, working out (although she despises cardio), searching for the perfect chocolate dessert (so far as she can tell ALL chocolate is perfect, but it requires more research) and arguing with her husband over who the air compressor and nail gun really belongs to (they belong to JL, although she might be willing to trade him for his new chainsaw).

She also writes under the name Jeigh Lynn

Ugh, just no.

Maybe I'm moody because of my book funk but I had to push myself to finish this. I don't like this author's clunky writing style and tension-less plot. This is my second book by J.L. Langley and I'm calling it quits- she just isn't for me.

I like slow burn- this is insta-love
I like a plot arc- this is meandering
I like hot sex- this is just sex overload
I like realistic angst and real emotions- this felt cartoonish

Even though this book is GFY (my FAVORITE trope) and shifters (I LOVE shifters) this book was just dull-city. And the gay for you was barely that. There were so many plot elements that could have been interesting (race relations, how being gay fits into the pack structure, Keaton's strength) but they were all glossed over and wasted. It was like, "Oh, you're gay? Come get a hot dog!" I wanted something, something to happen that spice this book up a bit.

If I'm being nice, I did like the sweetness of this book and I had a soft spot for the pet names (they were adorable). I think the problem here is more that I don't enjoy this author's style.

I'm going to go snuggle my copy of now.

I purchased this book based on her gay space marine books which I adored. I would have thrown this book against the wall, but I had purchased an ebook and it doesn't work the same.

One reason I picked this book up was that the chracters are in an interracial relationship. My parents are in an interracial marriage. They've been gloriously happily married for over 40 years. They met, fell in love, and got married within a year. I've been in many interracial relationships over the years. I thought reading a nice gay interracial romance would make my day.

It actually made me want to bang my head against a wall. First, there is Chayton (a Native American/ veterinarian/werewolf) who has spent his entire life longing for the pinnacle of the white beauty standard. His entire life he has longed to marry a white person with fair skin and fair hair. You know, someone who is just the pinnacle of pretty. Which....is problematic since that means no one in his tribe can *really* be pretty because they have dark skin and dark hair. Racist beauty standards are incredibly toxic. It's not surprising that Chayton's mom would be a bit peeved about her son swallowing internalized racism koolaid. Yet I think we're supposed think his mom is jealous of how pretty white people are, and prejudiced against white people.

Which again, holy fuck problematic. Native women have been described by white people as ugly for centuries (and yes, it's happening now). The ugliness of Native people has been used as a further sign that they aren't civilized, and therefore need to have their own civilizations destroyed so they can learn to be almost as good as white people.

I could go on about this for pages and pages, but I won't. You know if the native guy thinking "ooh my dream mate must be white white white" was a toss away line, whatever. But no. I think it's supposed to be a sign of how awesomely non racist and post-racial they both are. The mother is obviously the mean racist one. She's also treated in an appallingly misogynistic fashion.

To sum up. I know gay werewolves are sexy and all, but don't read this book.

More of my reviews and thoughts on my blog

I loved this book, I did not expect to enjoy it so much so it came as a surprise. A very good surprise. The sex was hot, the characters enjoyable and I just love shifters especially gay shifters. I love their fierce protection of each other and all their other wolfy instincts.

Chayton Winston is native American and since very small he has been dreaming of his mate. A golden haired blue eye mate which is a no no for his mom. She is convinced that his mate will be of the same race as them. Which she should know better, a mate is chosen by destiny you are never given a choice. Chay is a vet and he is about to come in contact with a wolf that’s about to give him a fever. He knows the wolf is his mate but their aren’t any female wolves. Weird, but he’s thinking that his mate just might be the first. Well said wolf isn’t female and yeh its his mate, and damn he’s the most beautiful thing Chay has ever seen.

Keaton Reynolds is a smartass, he has an attitude problem. Well its to be expected if you are hated on because of your sexuality. Plus he’s been tossed from the family broke up with his Ahole boyfriend and was shot at. He is having a bad day, waking up in a new territory with a pounding headache and a hard on that could plough through solid rock. So maybe his day is not so bad, and all is wolf instincts is saying that this tall, dark and handsome stranger is his mate. Well seems Keaton has hit the jackpot with landing his mate, Chay is exactly his type but with that realization and a kiss Keaton’s world comes tumbling. Seems Chay is not gay, the day just got worst again.

So a relationship that started out faulty at best, bloomed into some serious love. Its one hot love, you can say the writing is borderline severe mushiness but I did not mind it. It worked in this story line, the mush fest came with some sexy scenes and sexy they were. I bloody lost my pants when Keaton shifted into his were/human form. Blazes that was catch a fire. I loved Chay nickname for Keaton (Little Bit) so cute. So things take a dangerous point when someone wants Chay’s Bit dead, who could it be now.

Overall a hot and sexy read filled with mystery and fun characters. The near ending was hilarious for me, makes you wanna run and pick up the next book quick quick. Thanks Buggy for hooking me up I enjoyed it immensely. I loved how Keaton was the stronger of the wolves even though his appearance doesn’t give it away. You mess with this wolf and his mate and you are gonna get bit , HARD! I give this 5 on the PL. I recommend ditching pants completely. Lets just say if I were a guy, I could of plough through some rock of my own.

3 Stars - cute, sweet and very steamy - I enjoyed

This isn't an unforgettable masterpiece but still a cute and enjoyable M/M shifter story. It's about two quite different guys who are destined to be mates. In other words, nothing new under the sun. But ... that's why I'm reading all these romances. I want love, kisses and a grand HEA end.
“Mommy, my mate will have hair like the sun and eyes like the sky. He will be like a prince.
“She. And it's princess, honey, not prince, ...

Even as a small five year old boy, he felt it and knew inside, but he forgot...

The vet Chay is a wolf shifter with Native American ancestry in New Mexico. One day they get an unknown wounded white wolf into the animal clinic. Clay immediately feel great desire and strong attraction to the beautiful wolf. He feels that this is the mate he desired for so long. There is only one problem, the wolf turns out to be a male, Keaton a 25 year old, recently moved to town, blond and blue-eyed super smart teacher.

These two guys are two lovely very "customizable" men and they are fun to read about. I liked them a lot. The story is perhaps slightly predictable but it's comfortable and you get a pretty good feel good story that warms the heart for a while. There are cute nicknames, a super cute puppy, parents problem, nice and not nice friends and a lot of very sweet love bickering. I laughed and smiled a lot.
“That another on of your rules, Bit? No touching, no kissing, no flirting?
“You forgot no calling me Bit.
“Yeah, I don't like that one. I don't like the no flirting either.

“What the fuck are you planning on doing that you need four things of lube for?
Chay shrugged. “I like being prepared.

Sometimes it may be little too much tumbling in bed (yes, or everywhere...) and in this case it was so. For me this one lost a star when I got to the middle and began to tire. I know they were so ho~ny for each other, but I don't need and don't want, to get it over me on every third page. Although it is actually good and quite hot told - everything can of course be tedious to read.
~ Really? Yes, I just said it. ~
Bit of a shame, because otherwise this was a really nice, cheerful and entertaining story.

Overall, cozy, hot and pretty funny told but in this case fits that old expression "less is more" really good. This was nice and moderately entertaining but is probably sadly soon forgotten. ...But good enough to make me happy for a few hours.

I LIKE - good but maybe to much "steamy cuddling"

~I HAVE SOME RESERVATIONS AND MY TEETH HURT~
Opening Line:" Broom, broom... Mommy, if I'm a wolf like Daddy, why can't I change into a wolf?"

I was initially excited about this book as it contains werewolves and male/male romance. I thought hey this will be good, well unfortunately, hey this is just okay. I liked the idea presented in the storyline wherein a straight man (albeit a werewolf) locates his mate only to discover that he's also male. Our protagonist then doesn't know what to do with these new sexual urges or with his new life mate.

Unfortunately this interesting idea only lasts a couple of chapters before the werewolf theme becomes irrelevant and the story turns into a sugar sweet romance complete with a cute puppy, white picket fence and more endearing nick names than I could count. Oh sure there's an attempt made at a plot between the many superfluous sex scenes but its pretty weak and even the potential murder mystery falls flat.

Here goes the plot summery; Chayton is a veterinarian and a werewolf. One day the sheriff brings a wounded wolf into his clinic, someone has shot the light haired dog and it's while Chay nurses the animal back to health he gets a feeling telling him that this wolf is his mate. Upon further inspection he realizes that the wolf is male. Now what's Chay to do? He always thought he was heterosexual but his ever increasingly tight jeans are telling a different story. When Keaton recovers he finds himself with a straight mate and he's not exactly thrilled either. Somehow the pair manages to solidify their Beaver Cleaver romance, fighting prejudices along the way and getting a puppy. Oh yeah, someone's trying to kill Keaton but because of the continual boners nobodys too worried.

I think my biggest problem with this book besides the cloying sweetness was the fact that although written as two very distinctive characters in the beginning Chay and Keaton's voices merge into one and I could never tell whose voice or internal dialogue I was reading. I also prefer my M/M to contain manly men and Keaton has been written as a stereotypical effeminate both in looks and demeanour. In fact he might as well have been a woman. And although the love scenes are eye opening, scorching hot and well written even they got tedious every other page. However this is erotica so if you shut your brain off and just enjoy the man on man action in this fluffy romance it might just work for you. Cheers

J.L. Langley’s exploration of pack structure and fated mates is the most interesting one I’ve read, and I was thrilled when I discovered Without Reservations was being reissued, and with a beautiful new cover! Ms. Langley has created a fantastic world in her With or Without series, and if you missed it the first time around, now’s your chance to find out why this is one of the best wolf-shifter series out there.

Having dreamed his whole life of his fated mate, Chay knew they’d be blue eyed and fair haired he just hadn’t expected they’d be male. However, the moment Chay lays eyes on Keaton he feels the connection and comes to grips with it pretty easily. Having been burned before, Keaton takes a bit longer to accept his destined is straight.

I was incredibly glad this pair figured it out pretty quickly because their chemistry is off the charts, and J.L. Langley treats us to some scorching hot love scenes! Since these two establish their bond early in the story, most of the book focuses on their relationship and shows them working through the drama together.

Fast-paced and fun, Ms. Langley weaves a captivating story in Without Reservations. Between issues in both men’s families, and a clever mystery, we’re introduced to characters in both packs which lays the groundwork for the next book in the series.

I’m looking forward to the re-release of the next two books in the With or Without series, as well as the promise of an expanded version of With Love and a new book titled Without Secrets. J.L. Langley fans rejoice!

J.L. Langley continues to surprise me. Her characters are interestingly addictive to read about. The Gay For You storyline is a hard sell for me. Because of the paranormal aspect, and the magic of finding their one mate, irregardless of the gender, won me over.
Chay and Keaton's relationship was very well developed. Despite being fated as mates, and Chay not being a homosexual, I thought their relationship was well paced. From strangers, to friends, to lovers their sexual chemistry was steamy to say the least.
I can't wait to read the next installment in this series! We'll have to read about Keegan first, though...lol.

I really enjoyed Without Reservations. It was fun, fast-paced and highly addictive. Keaton and Chay were a very appealing and likeable couple who were easy to fall in love with. The sex scenes were frequent, but very tender and erotic. Unfortunately, the plot was a little flimsy and the story rather lightweight. There was a little bit of mystery and family drama that could have been better developed. Keaton and Chay are both werewolves, yet they seemed mostly human throughout the story. I would have liked to read more about the pack's culture, traits, customs and power struggles. Without Reservations is still a very satisfying read. I'm looking forward to Remi's story in With Caution.

A little different take on mates...one of the heroes is straight so it's GFY. I was glad Chay had no real qualms about being with another guy. There were a few things that bugged me but overall it was a decent read and kept me engaged.

Sometimes what we search is so damn easy to find!!!

Normally when I start a paranormal romance (like with werewolves) what I want is: romance, funny parts, a good plot and certainly very appealing characters.

Reading this book I had everything, good plot, great characters, sex scenes, sex scenes, sex scenes, sex scenes, and before I forget, sex scenes.... Ok, did you get it, no?Yeah... both main characters are very horny and I think that take too much time of the book. I would prefer less sex, and more plot development.

So 3 stars, very good story but I would cut half of the sex scenes... All HOT scenes, but too much without nothing more happening annoyed me.

**3.5 stars**

Basically, PITA stole the show...hands down best thing in the book. {for those of you who don't know, PITA is the new puppy and stands for pain in the ass!} I found myself looking forward to all his shenanigans!

Best Line: "The puppy is watching."

But back to the story, or what story there is. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book but there is A LOT of sex. I know they are a new couple but I could've done with about half the sex scenes and more of the story. I REALLY would've liked more of the werewolf story. I found that really interesting and I think if the author would've expounded on it, it would've been really good. I also liked Chay and Keaton. I think they are really good for each other and I enjoyed seeing them come together as a couple. I also liked all the friends, extended family and wolf pack.

The next book is about Remi and Jack and I'm hoping that it will be as good if not better. I can't wait to see how Remi reacts!!

**edit ~ something I wanted to say and left out of this review is that I felt like Chay accepted the situation alittle too easily. I understand the whole premise of Keaton being his "mate" but it just seemed liked there would've been a bit of a struggle for Chay.

ONE HOT BOOK! (rarrr...)

Hmmm... You can say I might not into Fantasy Roms so much since I have this sitting in my TBR for quite some time. But I'm glad I started to read it! Sigh, this book was just hot... First, great writing! Finally a third person read after reading lots of first person narrating. It was refreshing for me. Hmmm, the characters were nice. Chay is a little too perfect for me. Keaton was okay, quite shallow for me tbh. But they were still nice, their chemistry were still good. Love Chay's dad. And I'm excited for Remi and Jake! (Gotta read Book 2 right away after this) The plot for me unfortunately disappointed me quite a bit. Langley could make this big like Twilightish kind of book but it didn't. But it was still nice. I kinda expected more I guess. Like more werewolf action and stuff. I really don't understood how Keaton as a wolf was more powerful than all of them.

Overall it is still a very nice (and hooot) read. Recommended to M/M Rom fans especially for those who like fantasies, werewolves, and Taylor Launter (LOL!)

Now gotta find my mate... (and to start reading book 2...) XD

This is the first book in J.L. Langley's series 'With or Without'. Anytime I start reading a series, especially from a new author (to me), I'm holding my breath at the beginning hoping it will be as good as it appears to be. In this case, it only took a chapter in to realize I had hit the jackpot with this author and this series. The writing is top of the line. Crisp, concise, and well paced. The plot is a fairly simple one but the dialogue and interactions are so great they kept me entertained until the end.

Chay Winston is a thirty-year-old, Native American veterinarian and werewolf in New Mexico. He has been wishing for his mate since he was four years old. He has dreamt of his mate since he was a child and always dreamed of sunshine hair and sky-blue eyes. Now this doesn't make his mom happy as she's fairly prejudiced against white people and always corrected him by saying his mate would be a beautiful girl with dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin. Chay stops correcting her but he knows his mate will be a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Keaton Reynolds is twenty-five, a PhD, a werewolf, and Caucasian recently moved to New Mexico. Keaton is gay. He's always been gay. In fact when he came out to his birth pack when he was sixteen and home from college (brilliant, too) his brother and four pack members attacked him. He kicked their butts because he's a very powerful wolf but has no interest in being Alpha. Keaton has only had one real boyfriend, if you could call him that, and that guy refused to acknowledge Keaton in public. So, you can imagine his mindset.

I really enjoyed the change in pace reading this book - I rarely read paranormal romance anymore so I enjoyed this aspect of the book. The mystery was a bit slow, almost anticlimatic, but everything was resolved and I look forward to reading about Jake and Remi. My main complaint was I was a bit bored with the sex scenes - they just seemed too frequent and long. Don't get me wrong - I love a good bit of sex, but these scenes just didn't add to the story and I found repetitive and superfluous.

But regardless I will read :)

This was a cute story. It didn't have an excellent plot, but it kept me entertained for a couple hours. I definitely could've done without the sex every 2 pages. I mean damn, how many times a day can these two freaking have sex together?! They take the relationship slow at first, and say no sex, but then a couple chapters in all the dams break and it's nonstop sex... I do like the idea though, gay werewolves was kind of interesting, I can't say it's something I've seen before. Anyway, overall this was a pretty good book, not a literary masterpiece, but an entertaining read none the less. If you have a couple hours to burn and like gay werewolves, check it out.

4 FELLOW TEXAN STARS

Really cute story. The straight guy who finds his mate is a male wolf was a fun plot. I loved the way that Chay went from straight to falling in love with Keaton. I know a lot of readers don't enjoy the,'honey, sugar, darling, babe, baby,' endearments but I do and he used the, constantly in this story. Maybe I just miss endearments in my own life, who knows? Anyway, the story moved along with a nice pace. I didn't get bored and it concluded well without leaving me cussing, like so many endings do. It left me satisfied. I wonder what that could be mistaken as.

Without Reservations was the very first m/m book that I ever read. So it should be no surprise that it holds a very special place in my heart. It was the starting point for me finding this great community, and as such I basically sing its praises whenever I can. It (and the rest of J.L. Langley’s books) are also among my top rereads. There is something so very comforting about coming back to them time and again.

One of the reasons I think this story makes a great stepping off point from m/f to m/m is that it takes a lot of the common tropes in both genres and makes them fun again.

Chay is pretty sure is is straight. He is also sure that he has a mate out there just waiting for him to find them. Granted, he kinda assumed that they would be female. Which makes him finding a wolf (only males become wolves in this universe) in his veterinarian practice in need of care-–who is also his mate-–kind of a surprise. But what I like is the hints that Chay may might not have been as straight as he claims at the beginning of this book. In fact, I’m pretty sure he is at the very least bi. It is the ease and gusto in which he accepts Keaton (his mate) that I really love. It is not a big deal to Chay and so it makes the reader feel more comfortable falling into this new (at least to me) m/m space for the first time.

I admit after 10+ rereads that the mystery is really not all that mysterious anymore. I still do remember, though, really enjoying trying to figure out who is stalking Keaton. And even after all this time I don’t have any problems just sitting back and watching the story unfold, even if I am well aware of how it all ends.

And the appearance of Jake and Remi (the MCs of book 2, my favorite book in this series) are always a nice way to goad me to just keep reading whenever I finish this one.

This is just a great, light read. It is sexy, slightly mysterious, and I always seem to fall back in love with these MCs whenever I pick up this book. And while my past with this book kinda makes me biased, I honestly think everyone should read it at least once.

4.5 stars

This book was much better than book one in this series. I really really liked it!

Chay is a Native American werewolf. Since he was 4 years old, he knew his mate would be blonde haired and blue eyed. His mother is very prejudiced and thinks he should only be with another Native American Woman.

It comes as a huge surprise to Chay when he is at work and the game warden brings in a light colored wolf. The minute Chay sees the wolf, he knows its his mate. His mate is a blonde haired blue eyed man named Keaton. A very pretty man, but a man nonetheless!!

Keaton and Chay have to overcome small town mentalities and hurt feelings in order to be together. Can they work it out, especially after finding out someone is trying to kill Keaton??

This book is hot!! I love the "guy isnt gay, but ends up loving another man anyway" story line ;) Really worth reading. Two thumbs up! ;D

I really enjoyed this book. I've been putting it off because the first one didn't really do it for me. But this one got me attention from the very beginning. Both characters were great. Funny, down to earth and sexy as hell. I loved Chay's pet names for Keaton, and Keaton's temper and sarcastic remarks. The writing was excellent and the dialog was very entertaining.

My foray into m/m GFY reading begins! Props to SB - thanks for the rec and loan. I liked the story, and the characters were sweet and non-angsty. There was a nice blend of humor and valiant efforts once they hook up to give the story a plot to go along with the "OMG, they're getting into the sexytimes again???" scenes. They don't really fight their matehood, and the things that provide tension are all external forces affecting their relationships with others or threats to personal safety. Around 30-40% into it, they had already paired up and I was a little wary of what the author could do that would stretch the book another 60%. I was pleasantly surprised that the author ratcheted up the aforementioned external stressors and managed to hold my attention through the end of the book.

My biggest quibble (and it's a big one, unfortunately) is that, while I thought the story was cute and the characters were fun to read about, I just did not like the writing style. I found the writing unpolished and the dialogue sometimes bogged down and unnaturally clunky. I know I just pointed this out in another book, but this one also falls victim to the lack of contractions, which naturally occur in speech. Indeed, "we're" and "you're," for example, are nowhere to be seen (er...read?). Instead, we have characters saying, e.g. "they are saying..." or "we are trying..." Try it - it doesn't sound natural in conversations or everyday speech.

With that in mind, I probably won't read more by this author. I do like this theme, though, and will continue on my journey through its many offerings.

A great Shifter fic. I love this series. J L Langley knows how to write.

I had forgotten just how good this book was.

The story line was strong and the chemistry worked well between Chay and Bit. But if I’m honest Pita stole my heart lol.

One of the things I loved was the way that even though Keaton is smaller and young looking he is in fact the stronger wolf. So often the smaller guy is turned into a wimpy girly type, this made a welcome change.

If I had any niggles it would be Chay’s mum doing a complete turn around so fast. What’s wrong with maybe slowly coming around to things?

Without Reservations is a typical JL Langley book solid story, tight writing and a very satisfying romance. It’s not my favorite of hers but it comes fairly close to the keeper shelf.

Chay is likeable and personable with his stubborn charm and charisma. He’s wanted a mate since he was four when he dreamed of his future mate as a man with white hair and blue eyes. Little did he or anyone know just how accurate that prediction would be. Instead he's been waiting for the perfect woman to cross his path that his hormones would recognize and then complete his life. Instead, he is presented with an injured Keaton whom Chay mistakes as a female wolf until closer inspection. Yet his hormones never lie and the tiny male wolf in front of him is indeed his mate.

Chay's ease in accepting a male wolf as a mate is almost too casual yet his easygoing mannerisms combined with werewolf mechanics allow the reader to slide over what could be too easy of a transition. The author has set up this new world so that werewolf mates recognize each other on an elemental and genetic level. Meaning not only is there no choice in the matter, but mates are inexpiably drawn and desire each other, even if they wouldn't normally be attracted otherwise. This means the acceptance of a gay mate for an otherwise mostly straight Chay is a rather quick transition with no angst or drama. Keaton is his mate and well, he's male but what can you do?

Although normally this would cause all sorts of character drama and angst, enough to progress the plot and relationship itself, the author offers a refreshing turn in that neither man really puts up more than a token resistance. They easily come together with a minimum of problems, either internal or external, and the only drama comes from repeated attempts on Keaton's life from an unknown source. These attempts are realistic and not overly complicated nor is there a plethora of evil-doers who are implicated in the attempts. The twist at the end of the resolution was a bit over the top but it was humorous (although I don’t think it was supposed to be) and fitting with the story so far. It's not perfect but it was enjoyable and easy to accept.

As is Keaton’s character whom, although small, is quite powerful as a werewolf and fiercely independent on top of an explosive personality. Keaton’s stubborn nature is tempered by Chay’s more mellow personality, although both men are certain to have head butting moments with equally recalcitrant personalities. Keaton initially tries to protect himself and his emotions from yet another “straight guy experimenting with men, but due to Chay’s quirky and charming courtship, he gives in to the desire and attraction he can’t avoid. Together both men have warmth and depth as characters and their relationship is fun and engaging to read.

There are plenty of sex scenes in this book, powering a good portion of the relationship through their steamy and sexy love scenes without feeling either overwhelming or too few. Langley has excellent timing and pacing, able to add in enough heat to satisfy without turning the book into a long sex scene with different backgrounds. I found it especially entertaining to read Keaton’s role reversal in his first attempt to top during sex. He was likeable and charming in his eagerness and the sex was pretty hot.

Several secondary characters were introduced and a few were clearly intended for future books in this world/series. Remi and Jake are introduced and although Remi is not altogether a successful character, the pairing of the two men together is interesting enough that I look forward to the next book. Remi initially starts as an obnoxious, antagonistic and chauvinistic ass that actively tries to insult and demean those around him without much recourse from his friends. He has an acceptance of “oh that’s Remi, just ignore him that seems to excuse and ignore poor behavior. However, towards the end of the book his actions turn around completely with a quick explanation and not much understanding. Hopefully in his story, he’ll develop as a much more complex character.

Overall this was a pretty enjoyable read with hot, sexy men who have a caring and almost adorable relationship. Chay’s nickname for Keaton is almost too cute, as is the couple themselves, yet it works as light but well-written romance with more complexity and interest than most authors are able to produce. Without Reservations is an example of a satisfying romance without copious amounts of drama or angst, delivering fun and sexy characters with a light mystery done right.

01/18/13: Revised rating after a couple of years of reading m/m: from 4 to 3.

This is the third book by J.L. Langley I've read and I must sound boring, but I'm amazed at how easy it is to read her books. The characters are lovely and the story is sweet with just the right amount of obstacles thrown in the characters' way if you, like me, don't like much angst.

What I liked:

* Keaton. After having read , I was afraid that the super-cute Keaton/Little Bit could be like Lainey, but I was glad I was proven wrong. Keaton is instead a powerful werewolf with deceiving looks. I liked him better than Chay, his mate, who in my opinion was less developed and less interesting as a character. Maybe if Chay's accepting a male mate had been more troubled, we could have seen a rounder personality.

* I liked the story. The threats on Keaton's life made me turn page after page and the secondary character were very interesting. Reading the blurb I expected more conflict from Chay's mother, but the resolution seemed rushed. Again, maybe that could have helped in giving Chay a personality. I also liked the characters of Jake and Remi and I want to know about their future.

What I didn't like:

* Like I said before, Keaton and Chay were well matched, but Chay seemed less important, Keaton stole the scene again and again.

* The reason of the conflict between Keaton and his family was a bit disappointing, it was something that could have been solved with a postcard.

* There were not enough werewolves' moments. Having read Mary Valmes' and having appreciated the interaction between the characters in their changed forms in that book, I think Chay and Keaton were too human for too much time.

These are the reasons why I give it 4 stars. I'll read the third book of the series and I think this author will become an auto-buy for me.

At the age of four, Chay was set straight by his mother: as a werewolf, he would have a fated mate and it would not be the blond, blue-eyed prince he envisioned, but a Native American woman.

Fast forward to adulthood. Chay, straight for his entire life, discovers that his mate is -- surprise! -- a blond, blue-eyed male werewolf.

I loved the idea of this story, but found it lacking. I was perplexed by how calm Chay is about the whole thing. Keaton is appropriately conflicted, especially since he’s been burned by straight men before, but Chay seems to be able to both accept the fact that Keaton is his mate and the idea that he’s not gay without any sense of inner turmoil at all. (I wrote this before I knew there was an entire subgenre known as "gay for you.")

I was also bothered by the constant emphasis on how small and “pretty Keaton is, as if Chay is thinking it’s okay to be with him because he’s practically a woman anyway. (Keaton brings this issue up himself, but Chay’s denials didn’t make me feel any more comfortable with it.) The sex scenes seemed to be written that way too.

This has been hanging around on my currently reading shelf for over a year and a half now. It's time to cut the cord.
