The barber Sweeney Todd runs a popular business shaving the wealthy in Fleet Street. When a customer carrying a string of valuable pearls disappears after visiting the shop, suspicions are aroused that Todd may be practicing more than just hairdressing. The text of this book is from the original 19th century penny dreadfuls that popularized Sweeney Todd over 150 years ago.

James Malcolm Rymer
200books28followersJames Malcolm Rymer was a British nineteenth century writer of penny dreadfuls, and is the probable author of Varney the Vampire, often attributed to fellow writer Thomas Peckett Prest, and co-author (with Prest) of The String of Pearls, in which the notorious villain Sweeney Todd makes his literary debut.
Information about Rymer is sketchy. In the London Directory for 1841 he is listed as a civil engineer, living at 42 Burton Street, and the British Museum catalogue mentions him in 1842 as editing the Queen's Magazine. Between 1842 to the 1867 he wrote up to 115 popular novels for the English bookseller and publisher, Edward Lloyd, including the best-sellers Ada the Betrayed, Varney the Vampyre and The String of Pearls. Rymer's novels appeared in England under his own name as well as anagrammatic pseudonyms such as Malcolm J. Errym and Malcolm J. Merry.
He died on 11 August 1884 and is buried in Kensal Green cemetery, west London.

Excelente historia, me gusto mucho la narrativa ya que tiene cierto toque de comicidad oscura, que logra arrancarte una carcajada a pesar de que el relato sea de un degollamiento (sumamente difícil lograr eso). Tiene muchos personajes sombríos, y de fondo un romance que queda completamente relegado a un segundo puesto por la trama absorbente del barbero asesino.
Creo que esta novela destaca por encima de muchas de otras novelas de terror de su época (aproximadamente 1850) por la diferencia notoria que tiene en su narrativa.

This tale of mystery and horror features the infamous ‘demon barber�, Sweeney Todd. Lieutenant Thornhill goes into Todd’s shop never to be seen again- others also seem to have disappeared in the creepy barber’s shop. But what did he do with them? Col. Jeffrey and the heroine Johanna Oakley set out to investigate. The answer, if one doesn’t know it already, is sure to horrify. Todd is a perfect villain-scary, sadistic and repulsive. Johanna is bold and adventurous (though a little naïve). The book is far more interesting and well written than what I expected from a ‘penny dreadful�.

Se avete letto I misteri di Parigi di Sue o quello di Marsiglia di Zola, vi.ritroveete i medesimi ingredienti e trascorrerete alcune.gradevolimore di lettura. Se, come me, eravate alla ricerca del testo dal quale pensavate fosse stato tratto l'omonimo film con Johnny Depp o l'omonimo musical, chiudete il libro e passate a nuove letture.

The String of Pearls is quite simply, pure reading pleasure, if a story about murders, enslavement, cannibalism, and a demented barber floats your boat. In this case, it certainly floats mine. The four stars I've given it here indicate my RFQ, or reading-fun quotient.
I have a wee bit about plot (and Mrs. Lovett's delicious pies) at ; anyone who doesn't want to know ought to skip it and keep reading here.
Here's the thing. I read this book primarily as an example of the penny dreadful as part of my ongoing history of mystery/crime fiction project I have going this year, and I have to say that looking for any sort of literary merit here is pretty much a waste of time. While it's a great example of what the working classes were reading, and while you can catch a lot of negativity among the poor for the upper classes and the use of mechanization throughout the story, it should probably be read just for fun and entertainment. Storylines tend to be dropped as do a few characters here and there, and the major focus is actually on the bad guys in this book. It's melodrama pure and simple, delightfully gruesome, and it provided me with hours of great joy while reading. It was another I lost myself in and well, I like when that happens.
Just to be clear: I've seen the play, I've seen the 1936 film based on this book, and I've seen the BBC adaptation (which is also quite gruesome and should not be watched while eating lunch as I discovered), and this, the original, is as different from all of its adaptations as it can possibly be. So when readers complain that the play is better and the book did nothing for them, well, they're actually comparing apples and oranges.
This book would be perfect for anyone looking for a good, old-fashioned escape read or a novel to relax with over the summer while at the beach or hanging out poolside. It goes very quickly despite its hefty length, and it's great macabre fun.

Here's my interpretation of what this novel is about (spoilers ahead).
It's about industrialization and the plight of the poor. Mrs. Lovett's assistant works in a basement that he can't leave. He works with machines and gets barked orders from a disembodied voice (Lovett), as if the orders are coming from some kind of loudspeaker, not a person. His choices are working himself almost to death, or being killed by his criminal employer to keep him from revealing her secrets. Sweeney's assistants, Tobias and Johanna, also have to work relentlessly or get killed by their criminal boss (who kills with a mechanical chair contraption), but, additionally, they have to serve customers in the most genteel way possible with a brimming smile on their face. Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett are also charming and well-dressed - Sweeney is gentlemanly and uses proper etiquette, and Lovett is maternal and welcoming. Few suspect them as anything but upstanding citizens. Mrs. Lovett is even seen as generous because she's the greatest baker around and yet still charges less than other bakers. People line up around the block, waiting for her meat pies to come out of the oven.
The novel entreats you to examine what it means to live in a mechanical society, in terms of machines and in terms of people behaving as machines. Do you care about where your products come from, or do you just want them to be cheap? Do you stay at a job you want to leave, or will you stick with it, for the security that it gives you? You have a feeling (like several of the characters) that something is off and that things don't add up; but do you really care, or would you rather trust your friendly neighbors? Maybe, just maybe, we should be looking out for each other.

Basada en la adaptación cinematográfica de Tim Burton, siempre sostuve que la historia de Sweeney Todd era de mis favoritas. Vemos a un tipo dolido, un alma en pena que solo puede obtener un poco de calidez en su interior a través de la venganza, de la sangre que resbala desde la yugular hasta los zapatos, y en cada sabroso pastel de carne humana que la gente devora con fervor. Pero ante todo, siempre estaba presente ese ápice de tristeza que lo inspiraba a cometer semejantes atrocidades. ¿Pero es ese el perfil acertado del maquivélico barbero? En lo absoluto. En su versión original, tenemos a un retorcido mental que ya con una risa monstruosa provoca terror, y ni hablar de su forma despiadada de tratar con quienes lo rodean, sin ser precisamente motivo de venganza. La ambición, el dinero son el disparador para Sweeney Todd en esta novela.
Y bien, mi experiencia con el libro fue sumamente grata, a pesar de que me costó atravesar el inicio, se me hizo particularmente pesado, especialmente en la parte de Johanna, quien se tortura pensando en su amado que no ha vuelto a sus brazos. Por ese motivo me debatí si debía ponerle 4 o 5 estrellitas, ya que muchas veces es necesario introducir a todos los personajes de manera extensa para adentrarnos en sus vidas y luego acceder a la parte del conflicto con un background que nos ayude a entender mejor, cosa que a veces se puede tornar un poco densa. Y por suerte hay un intermedio, que serán 4,5 estrellitas, porque realmente llega un punto en la novela en la cual se torna fascinante, y resulta imposible abandonar el libro. A partir de ese preciso momento todo viene cuesta abajo, empieza el dolor, la tortura, lo macabro. El cambio es rotundo, a mi parecer, y por ese motivo a mi me encantó el libro. Sin lugar a duda, mi personaje favorito fue Tobías, ya que fue quien más me conmovió y por quien más sufrí durante toda la historia. El libro cuenta con un buen número de personajes que por fortuna no son relleno, sino que cada cual tiene una razón para estar donde están, y eso me agrada mucho.

I really wish the writing style were less verbose. This would be a perfect if the pacing were better and 40% of this book were gone. Having not seen any adaptation of this book, I went into it hoping for a sensational story and I definitely got that, but I think the musical will take advantage of the macabre premise.

Después de haber visto cien veces la versión de Sweeney todd de Tim Burton el libro original no me sorprende nada, pero aun así no me ha parecido malo ni aburrido.
Desde el principio nos presentan a Sr. Todd como un señor feo como el infierno y desagradable con una risa que pone los pelos de punta y además nos queda bien claro que es un asesino, de hecho cambia un poco de la peli, porque empieza que mata a un señor marinero que lleva un collar de perlas que se lo tiene que dar a Johanna y claro esta todd lo mata y se queda ese collar tan valioso, ese collar ronda en toda la trama tiene mucha importancia, no cuento mas cosas distintas para quien se lo quiera leer se sorprenda un poco. Sweeney mola bastante la verdad, y además de el, el libro nos mostrará mas personajes despreciables, que contaran sus diabluras que en mi punto de vista hace de relleno a la historia, eso es lo peor creo, hay bastante relleno en este libro.

Nonostante il genere a cui appartiene ed il tema macabro, il libro non si sofferma a tergiversare con sordidi dettagli, bensì mantiene intatto il mistero in modo quasi “pudico�, con perfetta compostezza inglese, riuscendo comunque a renderci partecipi delle crudeltà ed efferatezze tanto di quel periodo storico quanto di quest’avventura. Il non esporre esplicitamente il fattaccio, tranne che nelle ultimissime battute finali, ma lasciandolo intendere al lettore pagina dopo pagina, rappresenta una manna santa per il coinvolgimento diretto - e sto parlando di un racconto che bene o male già conoscevo! Questo non fa che confermarmi l’eccellente lavoro svolto.
La trasportante teatralità dei personaggi è un vero e proprio spettacolo a cui possiamo assistere dalla prima fila. Grazie al diligente e amichevole narratore esterno, che con grazia e simpatia ci espone l’accaduto, seguiamo la condotta del malfattore, della sua complice, delle loro vittime e dell’indagine che ne è venuta a capo. Il tutto descritto con dovizia di particolari che ci catapultano sulla scena degli eventi che hanno avuto luogo.
Vi starete forse chiedendo perché allora non ho dato 5 stelle, e una volta calato il sipario non ho chiesto il bis? È presto detto: ho mal sopportato la melodrammatica fanciulla (pronta a togliersi la vita ad ogni paragrafo) in preda alla disperazione per l’amato, il resoconto sui viaggi navali, il piano orchestrato con l’amichetta, il finale!!! L’unica cosa che le do per buona è la situazione familiare, forse perché non aveva alcuna voce in capitolo� però tolto questo è stata una bellissima lettura, molto caratteristica, e che mi dà pure un certo compiacimento poter vedere sul mio ‘scaffale virtuale� di ŷ.

Το τσίμπησα πρόσφατα πιο πολύ επειδή ήταν φθηνό. Η ιστορία δεν είναι κάτι το τρομερό, μια ιστορία δεκαρικής φρίκης όπως λέγονταν στην Βρετανία οι φτηνές ιστορίες τρόμου. Είχε ένα κάτι όμως που δε μπορώ να προσδιορίσω. Απλά με κράτησε και το διάβασα σε ένα απόγευμα.
Το τσίμπησα πρόσφατα πιο πολύ επειδή ήταν φθηνό. Η ιστορία δεν είναι κάτι το τρομερό, μια ιστορία δεκαρικής φρίκης όπως λέγονταν στην Βρετανία οι φτηνές ιστορίες τρόμου. Είχε ένα κάτι όμως που δε μπορώ να προσδιορίσω. Απλά με κράτησε και το διάβασα σε ένα απόγευμα.

Not bad. Reading after seeing a movie does not quite give the same level of immagination: I kept picturing characters the same way as they were presented in the movie. Reliving a nice story is however nice, and it has more plot lines that are quite engaging.

Sí, es sólido y, aceptando cierta ingenuidad característica del pasado, resulta una historia atemporal.

A devoradores de penny dreadfuls, amantes del Londres del s. XVIII, gente que quiere una historia sencilla pero bien llevada.

Espera... ¿quién es el autor? XD Me resulta misterioso en este libro el grado de participación del traductor, que no sé cuánto habrá puesto de sí mismo. En su día creía que lo había escrito él y que la historia de un texto anónimo era una estrategia de mercadotecnia para generar misterio y desviar la atención del nombre poco conocido del autor novel. En realidad se trata de la historia original de Todd, el barbero diabólico de la calle Fleet, que hizo su debut en forma de publicaciones seriales denominadas penny dreadful. La verdad, el texto tiene todo ese aroma viejuno tan deleitable de historias pretéritas con las que hemos crecido.
:: ¿Qué te ha gustado más?
La forma en la que va hilando las subtramas de los distintos personajes y cómo las encaja me parece uno de los puntos fuertes. El protagonista, Sweeney Todd, es verdaderamente diabólico y tiene mucho magnetismo. El capítulo en el que intenta vender el collar de perlas es de lo mejorcito.
:: ¿Qué te ha gustado menos?
La trama de Johanna. Sería del agrado de las jóvenes del s. XIX, pero a mí me ha parecido un poco cansina al principio. Luego mejora. En cualquier caso, la forma afectada de hablar se vuelve a veces superflua y repetitiva. También te arruina el misterio conocer de antemano la historia de Todd y la señora Lovett. No te lo perdonaré jamás, Tim Burton, ¡JAMÁS!

Una lectura agradable con la que evadirse un rato por las lóbregas calles de Londres de 1785. Una historia simpática y oscura, con personajes de luces y sombras bien definidos.

Lo he leído sin ojos de corrector por una vez. Me apetecía evadirme y disfrutar, así que no me he fijado en si había erratas. Lo único que me llamaba la atención era el uso de las comas en algunas frases. En cuanto a la traducción, aunque no tengo el original para comparar, me parece un buen trabajo.

È una storia che racchiude molti degli elementi tipici dei romanzi dell'epoca. È un libro che dà risalto all'ambientazione, soprattutto all'architettura del quartiere in cui si svolge la vicenda. Temple è un distretto giuridico popolato soprattutto da giovani avvocati e non lontano dal porto, quindi frequentato da molti uomini di passaggio. I numerosi sotterranei che collegano i vari edifici danno l'idea di una città sotto la città, in cui non è difficile per Sweeney Todd tessere le sue diaboliche trame. Il perno attorno al quale ruota la vicenda è una classica storia d'amore travagliato che serve da collante alle varie sottotrame. Questo infatti è un libro fatto di molte storie, che servono di volta in volta come veicolo di denuncia sociale o per introdurre elementi esotici alla narrazione. Tutte le vicende che si raccontano nel libro ci fanno capire che anche se il mostro della storia è Sweeney Todd, ci sono molti altri insospettabili mostri che a causa della loro avidità possono gareggiare col protagonista in spietatezza. Mi hanno particolarmente colpito le storie che ruotano attorno al manicomio di Fogg e la denuncia sociale che il libro fa nei confronti di questi luoghi di tortura. La parte orrorifica del testo è fatta soprattutto di atmosfere, come quelle dei terribili sotterranei del negozio di pasticci di Mrs. Lovett o dell'inquietante barberia di Todd, e dal ribrezzo che si prova ogniqualvolta qualcuno assaggia un pasticcio di carne. Però, più che da questi due serial killer, il vero Orrore è dato dai personaggi della buona società che non trovano remore a sbarazzarsi dei loro congiunti per trarne vantaggio. Nel complesso è un libro che mi è piaciuto molto soprattutto per il terribile Sweeney Todd. Mi sarebbe piaciuto sapere qualcosa di più sul suo passato e su quello di Mrs. Lovett, a cui la narrazione dà poco risalto. Questa forse è l'unica pecca del libro.

A few streets away from the barber shop is Mrs. Lovett's Pie Shop where people throng in all hours of the day to eat the most delicious meat pies in all of London.
Reading this story was quite thrilling even though I already know the story. The writing is fantastic. This is from the 1800s, so it's the usual flowy, long sentences riddled with commas sort of writing from that age and I love it.
Anyone looking for a gothic mystery/thriller with a strong dose of macabre, read this, it isn't a tale like any you've heard. Would you like to eat Mrs. Lovett's pies while you read? I strongly suggest you against it.

, un barbiere serial killer nella Londra del '700, è un personaggio popolare e una leggenda metropolitana il cui mito trae forse origine da un fatto di cronaca nera realmente avvenuto. Tra le versioni più famose della storia vi è questo romanzo, in originale The String of Pearls, scritto da più autori e apparso prima a puntate nel 1846-47 e quindi (rimaneggiato) in volume nel 1850. Nel XX secolo della storia del barbiere assassino verrà fatto un musical, e sarà a quest'ultimo (più che al romanzo) che si ispirerà nel 2007 il regista Tim Burton per il suo film .
È proprio il film che io ho visto per primo, e sull'onda di quello ho acquistato il libro, anni fa, senza mai però considerarlo una lettura "prioritaria" (classico acquisto da 1-2 euro per "riempire il carrello", a dire la verità).
Come spesso mi succede, nel frattempo che questo libro aspettava sullo scaffale ho dimenticato quasi tutto del film, a parte l'idea base e il particolare modus operandi di Todd. Poco male, comunque, perché, diciamolo subito (anche per evitare gli equivoci che il furbo titolo italiano può generare), il film non narra la stessa storia del romanzo e anzi se ne discosta sensibilmente (vedi più avanti).
Diciamo anche subito che, secondo me, non siamo qui di fronte a un "capolavoro della letteratura gotica", come si sbilancia la quarta di copertina della mia edizione. Si tratta piuttosto di un interessante esempio di prodotto di successo di livello medio-basso, di narrativa "di consumo" e commerciale, e il motivo di interesse per il lettore odierno sarà più di tipo "storico" o "sociologico" che artistico o letterario (specie visto che la storia e soprattutto il plot twist finale sono, appunto, ormai piuttosto noti): utile, insomma, per capire il gusto "medio" del pubblico dell'epoca, come tra 500 anni qualcuno studierà i bestseller di oggi per tracciare una storia dei consumi culturali e dei generi di intrattenimento di inizio XXI secolo.
Le psicologie dei personaggi sono infatti per lo più elementari, l'andamento della storia e i vari fili della trama procedono e si intrecciano in modo un po' "pesante", tante figure secondarie sono prima abbozzate e poi subito dimenticate (ad es. i genitori di Johanna), le ripetizioni, alcune veramente pleonastiche (per dare un'idea, battute di dialogo del tipo "Ascoltatemi ora", "Sì, vi ascolterò attentamente", ecc.), abbondano, così come alcune digressioni non sempre malvagie ma dispersive. Molti di questi difetti sono certamenti dovuti alla struttura "a puntate" e ai successivi rimaneggiamenti e tagli subiti dal testo (tra l'altro scritto probabilmente da più autori) prima della versione definitiva.
Il libro comunque ha i suoi momenti godibili, specie grazie a sprazzi di humor nero (nero? nerissimo!), apprezzabili ancora di più se si sa già, appunto, il grande mistero svelato alla fine della vicenda, e a spunti di satira sociale, particolarmente salaci nei brani relativi ai "famosi" pasticci della signora Lovett, e amarissimi in quelli sul tetro manicomio di Peckham Rye (forse i brani più spaventosi del libro).
E, alla fine, il maggior motivo di interesse è proprio lui, Sweeney Todd. È vero che nel libro la caratterizzazione negativa del barbiere è assoluta e senza alcuna sfumatura (ha un aspetto spaventoso e sgradevole, una risata terrificante e crudele, non ha mai un attimo di pentimento o esitazione, ecc.), mentre nel musical e poi nel film si cerca di dargli maggior complessità psicologica (inventando un'elaborata backstory che spiega la sua furia omicida come la sete di vendetta per un'ingiustizia subìta), eppure è proprio questo estremismo e l'anomala accezione "industriale" del piano diabolico di Sweeney Todd (come sottolineato anche nella Postfazione alla mia edizione, di Cristiano Armati) a farlo apparire, paradossalmente, quasi "moderno": "Dal Dracula di Stoker al Mr Hyde di Stevenson, passando per il Frankenstein di Mary Shelley, la particolarità di Sweeney Todd è che per la prima volta, a indossare i panni del protagonista, non c'è una creatura colpita da un'oscura maledizione, avvelenata da una micidiale pozione farmaceutica o creata nel laboratorio di uno psicotico, ma, più semplicemente, un uomo che uccide per assaporare il gusto del sangue e godersi il privilegio del denaro" (postfazione di C. Armati, p. 322, corsivo mio). Quel che preme al Todd del libro non è tanto la vendetta o il potere o altre motivazioni "romantiche" o di affermazione "titanica" di altri giganti del male, ma portare avanti un lucroso business, e anche molte sue azioni sono guidate da un acuto e prudente (e ovviamente perverso) senso degli affari. È meschino, o tremendamente spaventoso tutto ciò? Vista così, insomma, è curioso che l'operazione di "umanizzazione" compiuta dal musical e poi dal film (che però dovrei rivedere, perché al momento, non ricordando nulla, mi sto basando solo sul ) abbia avuto l'effetto di rendere il protagonista contemporaneamente più complesso... e più banale? Per assurdo. O forse dovrei solo più correttamente dire che sono due Sweeney Todd diversi.
Un'ultima considerazione sulla mia edizione Newton Compton: purtroppo il risparmio sul prezzo dei volumi di questa casa editrice si paga spesso poi in termini di qualità, anche qui vari errori di stampa e addirittura un paragrafo ripetuto due volte (alle pp. 35-36). In compenso almeno c'è qualche immagine e una postfazione (del già citato Armati) abbastanza utile per contestualizzare.

Two and a half stars. Being a fan of the Sondheim production, I decided to read the original tale. While it had a few moments of dark humor (Sweeney being caught beating a child, turning to a customer and saying he was simply trying to teach the child that he should "devote his few spare hours in reading the Bible.") as well as the general macabre plot (Sweeney the barber kills his customers which are then made into pies and sold by Miss Lovett), this version of the plot was simply lacking. First, there was no motivation for Todd to be murdering at all. Unlike the musical/film, there is no backstory given. He is already murdering at the start, and the plot deals primarily with the police investigation into his affairs. Rather than related character subplots, a large portion of the text has Todd trying to sell a pearl necklace. And there's no interaction between Todd and Lovett within any of the presented scenes of the text. Rather disappointing rendering of the story after being exposed to the exceptional Sondheim version.

This book was deliciously creepy!
I loved reading the story that inspired the film, and learning that the tale was originally far more complex, and had other narrative arcs running through it. Whilst I was at first hoping that we would get the more brutal scenes of Todd killing his victims that the film boast, there was actually something far more sinister about how he deals with their decease in the novel, that was more atmospheric than I would have imagined if I knew it differed from the film before reading it.
Overall, a great story!

To be clear: I have never seen the movie versions of Sweeney Todd or the musical ones. My review is based solely on the novel.
Sweeney Todd is one of those stories that everyone is familiar with, whether you have read it or not. It has dripped its way down into the collective consciousness so that before ever opening the book you know that Sweeney Todd is a murderer and Mrs. Lovett bakes human meat pies. Just want to get that out of the way.
That being said, this book has a lot of technical flaws. It is listed as anonymous and most critics and scholars believe that there was at least more than one writer who worked on Sweeney Todd. The story was originally published in a serial format in the Penny Bloods or Penny Dreadfuls: low-brow literary magazines that catered to entertainment and instant gratification above, well, anything else. That, however, is not to say that Sweeney Todd has no literary value or fails to make cutting remarks on the society of the time, etc., but it does create issues in the narrative that take away from the enjoyment factor. There are numerous sub-plots and side stories that appear and disappear for no reason; characters enter and disappear only to reappear at the very end in little more than a sentence. All-in-all, to read the book, you just have to accept that some things make no sense and just go with it.
The most interesting character in the book is, without a doubt, Sweeney Todd himself, although there is a soft spot in my heart for poor Tobias. Virtually every other character is flat and just boring: Johanna Oakley is a painful representation of the ideal Victorian woman, Mrs. Lovett suffers from a real lack of "screen time" and doesn't really develop into anything more than an alcoholic, Colonel Jeffrey serves no real use except to usher in in the eleventh hour the only person with any deductive reasoning in the novel - Sir Richard Blunt.
Yes, that is another flaw of the book, although I do see this issue as being part of what the author[s] is saying about Victorian society. Pretty much everyone in the book is just stupid: Tobias's mother doesn't really question putting her son in a madhouse; Johanna deludes herself and takes the advice of someone the author makes painfully clear is not who you should be taking advice from; everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, constantly comments on the evil demeanour of Sweeney Todd but somehow do not connect the numerous disappearances in the novel with him - literally, a dog has to show people that, hello!, this is where people are dying.
So, overall, the book is predictable and lackluster. It is largely a story you probably already know and, due to all of the technical issues, is pretty much a bleh book. Sweeney Todd or The String of Pearls is really just an okay book, but, unless you really want to, you don't need to read the book to get the story.

Ho iniziato la lettura di questo libro con negli occhi le belle immagini drammatiche del film di Tim Burton (2007), nel quale il personaggio di Sweeney Todd (al secolo Benjamin Barker) viene interpretato dal quel gran bel figliolo di Johnny Depp (e mi sono contenuta...).
Beh... quella che ho letto è tutta un’altra storia.
Ci sono molte allusioni, il richiamo alle attività efferate del famoso barbiere sono sottintese, non bene esplicitate, come pure il legame tra lui e la signora Lovett (interpretata nel film da una fantastica Helena Bonham Carter), colei che gestisce l’affollato locale in cui si vendono i migliori e succulenti pasticci di Londra, le tanto decantate meat pies.
Una cosa: sicuramente ho ravvisato negli atteggiamenti e nelle battute secche di Sweeney Todd scritto, le movenze e le intonazioni di Johnny Depp interprete.
Decisamente sono stati colti gli attimi...

Come non ricordare anche il bravissimo Alan Rickman nel ruolo del Giudice Turpin?

Tra le altre, le storie più marcate sono quella di Tobias, lo sfortunato garzone del barbiere, che riscatterà con dolore e un pizzico di egoismo la propria libertà, e quella di Johanna. Lei è una ragazza innamorata, convive con il terrore che sia successo qualcosa di grave al suo fidanzato, è timida e riservata, ma così volitiva che la sua determinazione e il suo coraggio riescono a dare una svolta decisiva ai sospetti e alla soluzione del mistero di Fleet Street e dei suoi sotterranei.
Niente di fortemente drammatico, quindi, nulla di truculento, assenza totale di immagini forti (forse all’epoca bastava poco più dell’idea a far rabbrividire i lettori...); ne viene fuori un romanzo “soft�, in definitiva, anche se scritto/tradotto piuttosto bene (refusi a parte nell’edizione letta).
Da qui la mia delusione.
Molto interessante, invece, la postfazione di Cristiano Armati che racchiude in poche pagine non solo la storia avventurosa di questo classico gotico, ma ben delinea le figure principali del romanzo e il contesto in cui si muovono.
La mia terza stella va a queste righe finali.

I read The String of Pearls as part of my PhD research and it is therefore quite difficult to rate my personal enjoyment of the book. Remember how books you had to read for school always felt like a chore? Turns out, that niggling feeling never completely goes away, even if you love what you do!
Regardless, The String of Pearls was a pleasant surprise. The story is a so-called "penny blood", sensational tales that were published in cheap newspapers and sold to urban working people. These stories are notoriously of low quality, featuring crazy plots and murder and blood. The String of Pearls however, in my opinion, of some "low" quality at all (whatever that might mean). The plot is interesting, the choice of point of view is spot-on, and it gives birth to a whole slew of adaptations, sparking the imagination of centuries.
The String of Pearls is quite a different story than the stage adaptations. It features Johanna, a young damsel trying to figure out the fate of her lover. Tobias Ragg, a child working for the infamous Sweeney Todd, holding onto his life for all he can in the face of evil. Colonel Jeffrey, looking for his friend who might have fallen victim to Todd. And of course, Todd and Ms Lovett themselves, the people all events revolve around. Chapters alternate between these and some few minor character, so the reader doesn't miss out on any of the action.
Compared to much "high" literature of the nineteenth century, The String of Pearls is easy reading. It was meant to be read in instalment, and every chapter is expected to move the plot forward. There are some short recaps throughout, and checks to make sure the reader doesn't miss important plot points. It is not fast-paced by contemporary standards, but for the period, it provides a wild ride.

Este foi um dos primeiros livros de terror alguma vez escritos. E tem algumas curiosidades interessantes, ninguém sabe quem o escreveu, apesar de se desconfiar de alguns autores. Começou a ser publicado, por capítulos, em 1846 como um penny dreadful, livros assustadores que custavam um penny. E há quem acredite que Sweeney Todd foi real, o que torna esta história ainda mais assustadora.
Tem uma escrita surpreendentemente fluida e com capítulos muito curtos, tendo em conta a época em que foi redigido, o que torna a leitura muito rápida. Também gostei da narração, onde há imensa interatividade entre o narrador e o leitor.
A época vitoriana está muito bem retratada, com várias críticas a uma sociedade corrupta e degradante.
Sweeney, o temível barbeiro de Fleet Street, é o autêntico vilão, violento e desprezível e com a gargalhada mais assustadora de sempre. Miss Lovett faz as melhores empadas de Londres, mas não era eu que as queria experimentar.
Mas não é só de malfeitores que este livro é preenchido, tem também romance protagonizado pela valorosa Johanna, capaz de tudo para encontrar a verdade. E não posso esquecer o Tobias, a personagem que mais sofreu, mas que demonstrou uma coragem enorme. Foi ele que ganhou o meu coração.
É um excelente livro, com um plot genial. Para quem viu o filme, vão notar grandes diferenças no enredo.
É uma boa escolha para a spooky season.E esta edição da @classicaeditora está lindíssima.

Avevo delle aspettative abbastanza alte per questo libro, pensavo che fosse truculento, dinamico e magari vicino al genere horror, ma purtroppo non è niente di tutto ciò.
Lo svolgimento è telefonato, si capisce benissimo cosa sta per succedere molte pagine prima. La narrazione è prolissa ed a tratti discontinua, in quanto il finale viene narrato in un paio di pagine, mentre per fatti irrilevanti vengono spesi interi capitoli. Alcuni personaggi sono appena abbozzati, sarebbe stato utile approfondirne alcuni tratti e capire perchè Sweeney Todd, ad esempio, è così abile, atletico e preparato nel combattimento corpo a corpo.
Ho concluso la lettura a rilento, ma alla fine sono riuscito a terminarla solo grazie all'ambientazione intrigante ed alla speranza (delusa) che il libro prendesse una piega intrigante. Comunque capisco benissimo chi non è riuscito a terminarlo.
