I really wanted to like this book. The synopsis sounded adorable, the cover is just beautiful, and I'm always in the mood for a quick rom-com.

Unfortunately, several things about this book bothered me.

One: the main character, Melody. While I did like her--she was a sensible main character who made smart decisions and focused on her career--I also thought she was super judgy about certain things. While she didn't say any of these thoughts aloud, reading them made me iffy and overall, just really made me not like or connect with her.

Two: the lack of actual techy stuff. Clearly, this is not somewhere I excel, but considering this was Melody's profession, and considering she was a woman who enjoyed doing what she did and wanted to focus on it, I expected more involvement of, well, the techy stuff.

The romance was okay, I guess. I didn't feel sparks or really ship them together, but I thought Melody and Jeremy were decent enough characters. I liked how they took their time being friends before they both admitted their feelings for each other.

Thing is... it took a long time for that to happen. I liked the buildup, yes, but by the time it actually happened, I'd stopped caring.

Overall, this was a decent book but it wasn't the kind of book I was hoping for. It's a romantic story, sure, but I wouldn't classify it a rom-com--it wasn't funny. 3 stars.

I've been on a mega romance binge recently and really enjoyed this one (the whole series, actually). Each novel in it features a female protagonist who works in STEM.

When this first book opens, Melody is having a terrible night. First her date stands her up, then the creepy guy at the bar won't leave her alone. When a handsome stranger offers her an escape, it leads to one fabulous night—and that's all it can be, because the next day Jeremy has to fly home to L.A. But then three years later, Melody graduates and lands her dream job at an aerospace company—in L.A., where she reconnects with Jeremy and discovers not only is he as charming as ever, he's the CEO's son. And a billionaire.

This was a fun, sweet story, and I especially appreciated the emphasis on female friendship.

(Because so many readers want to know: this series is closed door, but that's not true for all of Nix's work.)

I'm going to dnf this at about 60%. I've been waiting for some depth to happen and am finding myself disappointed over and over again. It actually starts off pretty strong. I liked their initial meeting and getting to know each other and it was interesting that there was zero steam in the one-night stand that kicks off their "relationship".

But then it skips three years and everyone got shallow. And it starts by finding out that Jeremy had had a girlfriend all those years ago when he slept with Melody and that he has a history of cheating. And then we get some drama. And then we find Melody saying stupid crap like "I killed my ex-boyfriend" (because she didn't realize that he wasn't taking his medication and that he'd swung from manic to depressed just as they'd had a fight). I really hate misplaced guilt, but I hate it even more when it's so very poorly supported. And then we're asked to support a woman who Melody befriends who is a cheater, but it's okay, apparently, because she left a boy for a girl and go lgbt empowerment! And then Melody's mother comes to visit and the shenanigans were so juvenile that it broke my last remaining connection to the story. I have no idea why nobody took Pam (Mom) aside and said "hey, you're beating your girl down and making her feel like crap just because you can't get your head around her not having a boyfriend. And you just. don't. stop. nagging!"

And don't get me started on Jeremy's family.

Anyway, I can't help feeling like this was a gimmick to get a STEM heroine. And at least her work stuff made sense. Indeed, the least shallow aspect of this is Melody's job and the realities of going from the challenge of school to the scut-work of entry-level IT. But nerd-girl working STEM wasn't enough to keep me going. Sadly...

I basically dropped everything to devour this story after I read that amusing synopsis and devour it I did.

The romantic pairing of the rich playboy with the geeky girl has always been one I enjoy exploring in my romance reads and I believe this is a very successful venture where this combination of character archetypes is concerned.

I have to give Nix props for writing what I found to be a really likable female heroine in Melody. She was a bit geeky and a little quirky, but wholly relatable to me. I loved that she was representing women working and thriving in STEM fields of employment, although the specific field related talk was at a minimum here, so don’t expect any technical talk.

I also loved that Melody had a good head on her shoulders and although she aimed to please and did her best to make new friends, she didn’t suffer fools lightly, holding those around her to a standard of moral behaviour that I could totally understand. Some reviewers have referred to her as a bit judgemental at times, but I 100% agreed with her reactions of shock and even disdain when those around her conducted themselves in questionable ways - which many of them did, several times over.

Jeremy was harder to like and I feel this was mostly due to his lack of POV. The whole story is told through the lense of Melody’s perspective and experiences, and because of this I felt Jeremy remained a bit of an enigma throughout.

When Melody (and the reader) first met Jeremy in the past, he was sweet and charismatic and I could totally see why she threw caution to the wind to spend a steamy night with him, even though they were strangers at that point. But once the time jump occurred and Jeremy re-entered Melody’s life after her move to L.A., she learned some not-so-positive things about his past behaviour that made her question his character and whether he was in fact the type of person she wanted to be sweet on, let alone be friends with.

Honestly, learning to love Jeremy was an uphill battle for me and Melody alike, but he eventually won both of us over, even though he made it tricky at times.

It must be said that this book was super trope-y. What I assumed would be a simple playboy/geek romance, turned into a bit of mixed bag of common romance tropes. Thankfully, a lot of the crazy and/or disagreeable behaviour occurred in characters other than Melody herself, who simply played witness to all of the drama going on around her with her new friends, of which Jeremy was smack dab in the middle of. His group of friends, of which Melody became close to over time, were an incestuous bunch, with lots of past cheating scandals, and scorned lovers, ruined friendships, and even strained familial ties happening at every turn. But what amazed and amused me the most was how even the most questionable characters worked their way out of my scorn and into my heart as the story unfolded.

What worked for me the most was the slow progression of Melody and Jeremy relationship, from one-night stand, to work colleagues, to tentative friends, and eventually to lovers. The fact this was a slow-burn romance certainly helped matters. Regardless of the fact that Melody and Jeremy had a one-night stand at the beginning of the story, everything real and lasting that developed between them occurred three years later and unfolded in a believable manner, which I greatly enjoyed and appreciated.

Although I wouldn’t personally refer to this story as a rom-com (I didn’t laugh once), it was certainly fun, fresh, and utterly charming, and I look forward to exploring more of Nix’s stories in the future.

ETA: I should also state, for those playing at home (AKA my more pervy GR friends *wink-wink*), that the steam levels are non-existent here. All bedroom related activities were either off page or fade-to-black, but, surprisingly, I didn't find myself missing it in this instance.

I am surprise how much I do not enjoy Remedial Rocket Science. I was expecting a fun cute sweet romance between a geeky heroine and a playboy hero.

In Remedial Rocket Science, the story of moving to LA and adjusting to LA life taking more than 50% of this book. Some of the plot or the conversation do not support the romance aspect. Jeremy, the hero seems like a supporting character because he is barely shows up in the plot. When he does shows up, he is acting stupid or immature.

Melody is the heroine without a back bone. She is coward, needy and drama queen. Where is that geeky smart heroine? No where. Most of the story she feels sorry for herself. Such a turn off.

two stars or one star i can't decide on this trash fire because 50% of this book they are nowhere close getting together and the DRAMA is so unnecessary. It's also not romantic that our hero cheats on everyone and is supposed to be a rich misunderstood frat boy. GOODBYEEEE DNF i will never buy into this twisted up dramatic romance.

This book started great. We meet protagonists in the past when they had one night stand when they were still in college hero comes to visit a friend in Boston where heroine is in school...fast forward three years later they meet up again for coffee because the heroine is coming to live and work in LA. And lo and behold her work interview is with a firm that is a hero's family business.

The heroine is this smart young woman who is self-made, ambitious, and hardworking.

All is going great and then yep...and then falls apart....

* hero is this misunderstood poor little rich boy who has everything handed to him and also switches personality through chapters. Also, he is a serial cheater!!
* the fact that he had a girl when the one stand happened or that his current girl is the sister of said girlfriend is just gross, but don't worry he breaks up with the sister later on too and the first girl gets with his best friend

* some of the side characters also have a double personality, one moment the girlfriend is a huge bitch next chapter she is all let's hang out and go to yoga together, and next chapter she is suddenly bisexual, and no longer interested in hero...obviously

* heroine ex-boyfriend committed suicide and that is addressed only once

* heroine constantly argues that she can't be with the hero because they are way too different and Girl I believe you, you make excellent points, so much that I don't see the love between them at all at the end

I really wanted to like this book.
I wish we were shown more of the nerd and smart side of heroine not by just her passion for certain topics.
And Star wars...well I guess every nerdy character has to mention Star Wars.
And I would really wish that mental illness and bisexual cheating isn't used as plot devices.

So when I see a lot of people label this as a romantic comedy, smart romance, or the best one yet- cute...

* another thing that bugged me, I just can't help myself is the fact that two side characters sisters Lopez are Latinas and their first names are Lacey and Charlotte. I mean to make fully diverse characters and named them the least Latino names ever.

* I'm missing STEM in this STEM romance

I don't know if this is not only the first book in this series but also the first book by this author.
I also don't know will I be reading more books by this author...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

When I picked this book, I thought that it’s romcom (yes, I didn’t read the blurb. Again. Sue me) but it turns out that’s not what it is.

It stared off well and it caught my interest because the heroine wasn’t your typical geek (at least after she met Jeremy). So they meet at a bar and they have a one night stand and after that they have zero communication for 2 years. That’s when Melody (h) goes to LA and she calls Jeremy (H) because she doesn’t know anybody else there.

And that’s when the story went downhill for me. After their meeting in LA the story is full of drama which was totally unnecessary, for me at least. I rolled my eyes a lot of times because, seriously, what’s the point of all this drama? It was too much for me to enjoy the story. I did finish it though because the writing style made it easy for me to do it, even if it’s written in 3rd person pov which I’m not really a fan of.

Definitely not a great read, mostly because of the drama, but not a bad one either. Not sure if I’ll read the next book in the series. 3

Melody spotyka Jeremiego przypadkowo w klubie.

I’m a sucker for a rom-com. Especially with the geeky girl trope. Our heroine meets up with our hero while he is running wild on vacation. She wants a one night stand and that is exactly what she gets.
Years later she finds herself back in his orbit. Now he is a respectable fellow who wants to be faithful to his fiancee. So he slips our heroine into the friend category. To atone for his past he decides to introduce her to his fiancee and friends so she won’t be alone in a new city. He might have been kinder to have left her alone.

A cute romance and a quick read.

*I wrote a whole review and my Internet acted up just when it was uploading, and I lost a 300 word review. Let's please observe a moment of silence for the death of my patience.*

Anyhow, Remedial Rocket science is absolutely amazing. It's got a heroine who is in a STEM field. That alone got me interested. On top of it, the author hasn't made the heroine a cluster of clichés who is capable of solving any and all engineering and science issues. (I would have straightaway given a 1 star rating in that case.) Melody is a computer science graduate from MIT and is an IT professional in a great company.

Sounds...I don't know...bland? Because it usually is. For others. For engineers it is a pretty sweet job. So I am glad the author didn't buckle under the pressure to make the female lead some kind of a superhero. And the female lead is actually shown to study and work and not behave as she magically does everything behind the scenes while she spends the whole day romping around in sexy dresses and parties which she shouldn't be able to pay in a million years in real world.

I am also seeing other reviewers talking about how Melody seemed judgemental. You have to know that she is a pretty straight cookie that was made evident in the back story and throughout the the rest of the book, again and again. She's always mingled in setting where everybody's goal oriented, practical and quite no nonsense. So when she sees all this glamour and people who're cheating on each other left and right, it really stinks up the room with weirdness. She's just not used to this. But she never acts upon her judgements and pretty quickly overcomes them and acts as a genuinely decent human being and friend.

Which leads me to another point. I love how the women in the story don't live up to the typical 'rich dumb jerk' role. Women against women is a pretty common theme in a lot of books and frankly, it is way past the time that we stop playing into that stereotype in the books. Lacey's character makes quite a lot of stupid mistakes, but she is quite a great person otherwise.

I am cutting a star only because it could have been even better and I would have termed this book as my favorite of the year, but it's okay. I am still extremely impressed with it. And I am definitely recommending it to everybody.

Konu geneli düşününce bence işleniş olarak can sıkıcı.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review

This was a light, fun ROM-COM. Easy to read with great banter and great characters.

Melody is a bit of a nerd attending MIT who came from a very humble background and is quite different from Jeremy who is heir to a company worth billions and dropped out of 2 colleges. They meet completely by chance and end up having a one night stand. Then they don't see each other for another 3 years. They then reunite as "just friends" at this time.

The story kind of stalls for a bit here as we get the inside scoop on all these other side characters and I felt like the focus was kind of taken off the MCs. At one point I was actually questioning if there was another love interest for Melody as Jeremy did not seem to be showing her any romantic interest. By the end of the book he confesses his feelings but its really late in the book.

Having said that this book had its LOL moments and the dialogue was smart and witty. I loved how Melody was true to herself. She dressed to be comfortable, not to fit in. She was unapologetic for her love for Japanese Anime and Sci-fi shows even though Jeremy was clueless about such things. She never pretended to be someone else for him. Great female MC!

There is no real steam in this book. It's all fade to black. Overall it was a fun read and I would recommend to anyone needing a light, fun read.

Faceta. No. Hahaha.

I to tutaj wystarcza.

This was an enjoyable light romance read with interesting characters. A bit of a slow burn though, and unusually for modern romance novels, we fade to black in bedroom scenes.

The concept behind the series is to have romantic comedies with the female leads from the STEM professions. I think that's terrific, although I had to bit my tongue a lot during this one. (A west coast engineering company is not going to offer a relocation package to a graduate, let alone then have an MIT graduate do things like rebuild servers manually ... but I work in IT, so that's a case of being too familiar with the subject matter.)

I'll be continuing with the series.

I had listened to book 6 preciously out of order and didn't really enjoy it but wanted to start from the beginning and see if it's a series for me. It was better but nothing I adored either. Found the fake dating keeps going for far to long and I don't like when they don't realize each other feelings for each other for the majority of the book. But I think I'll give book two a try before completely making up my mind.

I don’t know why this would be a rom-com. So far there’s little comedy and little romance (besides a fade-to-black one night stand.) It’s more about the heroine starting her new life after college.

I'm DNFing because I don't care for the the judgy heroine, who loves the money she makes in her corporate job but then judges everything about the company. I sort of like that the hero was a bit lost at the beginning but I wished he was more put together when she met him later on. And with those friends of his, who needs enemies! I didn't like how she didn't have any patience for the guy when things when to shits, given that he was the injured party.

I'll just imagine that he moved on and found somebody else.

This was cute. Lots of fluff, not a lot of personal drama. The trope is one of my absolute favorites (rich/famous guy, "normal"/not famous girl), and it definitely delivered what I wanted. I just didn't feel super emotional or connected with the characters. Otherwise, a very entertaining read.

They promised me a story of a girl studying computer science at MIT, who was more secure with studying than relationships...

I got about 30 pages of that story and then the whole setting was switched to LA and a corporate management firm. What's more Susannah Nix put all the "typical" romance tropes in one story without deciding which one she wanted to follow and persue...
