Haunted In Death by J.D. Robb Poppy's Coin by Mary Blayney The Passenger by Ruth Rayn Langan Mellow Lemon Yellow by Mary Kay McComas
J.D. Robb is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and the pseudonym for #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The futuristic suspense series stars Eve Dallas, a New York City police lieutenant with a dark past. Initially conceived as a trilogy, readers clamored for more of Eve and the mysterious Roarke. Forgotten in Death (St. Martin's Press, September 2021) is the 53rd entry in the series.
So far I've read "Haunted in Death" by JD Robb included in this anthology (I've been looking for that!) but plan to go back and read the other stories by different authors later... I figured I was on vacation and can read only my favorite parts if I wanted to! ;) So far so good... Finally made time to finish this one. "Poppy's Coin" was very predictable. I found it boring just waiting for it to unfold, as I was pretty sure it would without giving much thought to the characters. "The Passenger" was an interesting concept for a story; I enjoyed the characters and would be interested in reading more from the author. "Mellow Yellow" was cute and charming... but a little silly, about an imaginary friend. I really enjoyed the author's writing style. It had such a good rhythm, and I liked the characters. The author's intelligence and humor shined through the silliness of the story and I will definitely look for more of her work!
This book contains 4 novellas (or perhaps short stories) by 4 different authors with a paranormal theme in common. Despite the title, I didn't find much scary about the stories contained in the book.
WARNING: SPOILERS MAY LIE AHEAD
Haunted In Death by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) was the first novella in the book. It contains characters from her In Death series. The "paranormal" aspect comes in the form of a building that seems cursed and haunted and either a possession or a mental illness. Of course, Eve Dallas is too pragmatic to believe in ghosts and curses (though everyone else in the book seems to to some level or another). She just wants to solve the murder.
What I liked: seeing familiar characters, the sex is between husband and wife (though I do think it could have been left out or been less graphic and the novella would not have suffered).
What I disliked: the fixation on the building and family being cursed, the "haunting" which isn't really explained
Poppy's Coin by Mary Blayney: The paranormal aspect comes from a gold coin that apparently interprets wishes in ways the wishee doesn't expect. I suspect the docent was the same "spirit" as the one who appeared to Poppy and to her papa after they made wishes.
What I liked: It was a good story, the discussion of miracles and magic
What I disliked: the shift from present day to past and then back to the present
The Passenger by Ruth Ryan Langan took a bit of a different turn than what I expected. I thought it would be more like a Bermuda Triangle where Josh disappeared or that he'd end up in a "world" where his colleagues couldn't see or detect him. Instead, he "crashes" and is rescued by Grace, who is there on a photojournalism assignment regarding strange lights or a woman who appear on the lake. They are visited by a man and dog, and the man gives Grace an envelope of items about her mother. They later find out the man has been dead for some time. The phenomenon is apparently Grace's mother's spirit (being fueled by Josh's father's spirit as well) so that she and Grace can meet at least once. Then it seems time resets itself and Josh's manager and colleagues arrive and Josh's plane is back to being whole. So several paranormal aspects.
What I liked: the plot surprised me, Barnaby's meaning and that Barnaby lived up to that meaning
What I disliked: Josh and Grace fall into lust with one another and eventually give in and have sex (they've only known each other a few days at that point), holes in the plot--if Josh really wants to contact his colleagues why does he not ask Wyatt about it when Wyatt visits them? He doesn't ask if Wyatt has a radio they can use or ask him to contact anyone to let them know where he is.,
Mellow Lemon Yellow by Mary Kay McComas was a bit more humorous than the other stories. After Charlotte's father dies, her childhood imaginary friend, Mel, reappears. Until eventually Charlotte starts to connect more with the world around her in a different kind of busyness than what she used to always claim. It seems that Mel changes form and becomes her (step)son's imaginary friend for a time though I don't think Charlotte sees him once that happens.
What I liked: It was an interesting view of imaginary friends--I'm sure I had one when younger but don't remember much about him/her, who Charlotte ended up with surprised me
What I disliked: the plot relied more on paranormal than the other stories in this book
Four paranormal stories from different authors....sadly, on the whole I was a bit disappointed in them, apart from Haunted in Death the tales were more romantic fantasies whereas I was expecting paranormal thrillers creating mixed reactions.
Haunted in Death - J.D. Robb Is the lieutenant-of-the-future hunting a flesh & blood killer or a ghost in this typical Eve Dallas tale? I LOVE Nora Roberts but after reading the first eight or so of the Dallas series I got a bit tired of them, finding, that for me, they were all too much the same & I can't tell them apart anymore! This short story hasn't encouraged me to go back to them. Enjoyable while read but nothing to get excited about.
Poppy's Coin - Mary Blayney Does Poppy's coin grant wishes? It would appear so in this tale set in the early nineteenth century as told to a young girl visiting present day London. My favourite of the four stories & found it reminded me of Amanda Quick in style.
The Passenger - Ruth Ryan Langan In brief, two strangers (man & woman!) meet on the deserted & mysterious Spirit Lake where paranormal sightings have occurred. An unbelievable tale that I really enjoyed this until the end which had me going ,I>"Oh, purleeese!!!".
Mellow Lemon Yellow - Mary Kay McComas From the first couple of chapters I thought that this story of Charlotte & Mel was going be quirky but amusing & I'd like it but no! Chapter ten & the epilogue I liked - everything in between was for me only worth skimming over. Not impressed.
This collection has been on my list of books to read for a while. Kicking off this anthology is a sad murder mystery with J.D. Robb. I picked this book up because of J.D. Robb. Eve and Roarke always show a great time. This one is a bit of a haunting which no nonsense Eve ignores. It turns out to be quite the doozy and there are only losers in this situation. This sad ending is balance by the next story, Poppy's Coin by Mary Blayney.

This is a part of a collection of paranormal stories by four authors. I just read the one by JD Robb, "Haunted in Death". I wasn't very impressed. I don't think it did anything to add to the In Death series - neither progression of characters or background to the following books. It was a quick read, and I love the characters from the In Death series, so it wasn't a hardship to read this book. I just didn't feel like to added to the series. If you are reading the In Death series and choose to skip this book, you will never notice the skip. As opposed to other short stories from the series where future characters are introduced, etc.
A good set of stories from familiar authors. The In Death short story fits between Memory in Death and Born in Death. It's a good one, and again shows that people can have different perspectives and still be friends and partners. Poppy's Coin is a very nice one in Mary Blayney's ongoing series about a magic coin. The Passenger is an intriguing one about love and family. Mellow Lemon Yellow is fun, and you will have the Donovan song popping into your mind.
Not your typical Eve Dallas book. Four short paranormal stories all in one book. It was refreshing to read familiar characters, then the opportunity to experience new authors I've never read before.
I thoroughly enjoyed all stories and could even relate to some. Mysterious music, a magical coin, time travel, and imaginary friends.
All stories are around 100 pages so more than your typical short story but easy to finish one in a day.
The last book in the novella was a nightmare to get through. The other 3 were pretty good. I really read it for the J.D. Robb story, but I wanted to finish the whole thing. Who knew it would be torture?
I downloaded this book from the public library for the JD Robb story, BUT I have to say that ALL of the stories were great - take your time reading through them and give each one time to live in your mind for a bit before the next one....- I really enjoyed them all.
What outstanding short stories/novellas - all about mystery and magic and are there really ghost? And all involved learning to love or knowing love or accepting the different facets of love. Pretty sublime.
I only read the "Haunted in Death" by J D Robb in this book. Love the supernatural theme, Eve's skepticism and the long family line that is the focus for the story. Since I'm into genealogy, I enjoyed that aspect of the story. Quick read and very enjoyable for me.

JD Robb's story was good, the others didn't grab me. The second one was long and a bit cutesy, the third had a bizarre thing where it had parallel timelines, and the last I skimmed without getting hooked.
This was a very enjoyably book of long stories. I actually think the overall title doesn’t fit since it makes it seem like the stories will be scary. They are not. They are just very good paranormal romance stories.
'Haunted in Death' by J. D. Robb: 4 stars 'Poppy's Coin' by Mary Blayney: 3 stars 'The Passenger' by Ruth Ryan Langan: 2 stars 'Mellow Lemon Yellow' by Mary Kay McComas: 2 stars
Eve's murder is related to a murder 100 years previous. Is it a ghostly murder or is the murderer just that clever. I'm with Eve, not believing, was an okay read for me.
