J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
Another will written paranormal fantasy world 🌎 mermaid adventure thriller short story by J. R. Rain. Alexis Silver throws off her clothes and dies off the pier into the salt water and the adventure begins. I would recommend this novella to readers looking for a quick interesting read. This was more of a ‘Cliff’s Notes on mermaids! Don’t get me wrong, because I am familiar with her character, I would have plowed right in anyway, considered what I was reading as the basic ‘lead in background info on the main character which all authors of books with repeating main characters start off a new novel in their series - just in case their reader accidentally just leapt into the third or fifth book in that character’s series , not realizing it was a series of stories instead of a ‘stand alone novel. As an amateur writer myself, I have the highest level of admiration for an author’s first chapter(s) that sets up the main character’s personality and lifestyle up in a way which will push the reader into forging on into Chapter 2 and hopefully, beyond, into the next novel in the series that the author has stuck in their head!
So I was disappointed that it was just such a ‘getting to know you blurb and not the lead-in to a new great mystery that I can always expect for this character! And I must mention also, that I love the way this author’s style of sprinkling in assorted pieces of info throughout his novels that seem like he’s having a private conversation with you in which he may make a casual brief reference to a prior case or character that serves as a gentle reminder as to certain aspects of the main character so your brain is completely refamiliarized with their methods and quirks, totally preparing you to dive right into their new endeavor!
This short story was essentially a recap of everything that is over-explained in the series. Reading it before, during, or after will accomplish nothing.
