Amber Martingale Too true.

message 152: by Amy (new)

Amy Just saw Spotlight last night. Excellent and necessary. I wish it did better at the box office because it deserved much more recognition. Hopefully a couple of Oscars will do that for it. Great film and cast.

message 153: by Janet (new)

Janet Agreed, Amy.

message 154: by Lance (new)

Lance "A Civil Action" was a boring movie...doubly so because I had read the book first and that was fantastic.

message 155: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss Watching Sunset Boulevard right now. Love this movie! Classic! Gloria Swanson is terrifying! Haha

message 156: by Nicki (new)

Nicki Just watched John Wick starring Keanu Reeves, very good film apart from when the bad guys kill his little dog.

message 157: by Janet (new)

Janet I watched John Wick earlier. It's an ok film, nothing to love, just an easy bullet filled watch. Sometimes when there's bullets flying everywhere for minutes on end I fall into mind wandering territory! ;-)

message 158: by Sandysbookaday (new)

Sandysbookaday Beyond with Jon Voight in the early hours of this morning...actually a really good movie.

message 159: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters I watched the old classic and true story war film

Password For Courage with Dirk Bogarde

Amber Martingale Lance wrote: ""A Civil Action" was a boring movie...doubly so because I had read the book first and that was fantastic."

That's ALWAYS a risk. I thought they were BOTH boring! Even so , I still managed to get a "B" in the class.

message 161: by Vera (new)

Vera (Estante da Vera) I watched Maze Runner last night.

message 162: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale They defiled a Native American graveyard, Vera, while filming The Maze Runner.

message 163: by Janet (new)

Janet Has anyone seen Mad Max Fury? Picked up a load of Oscars last night.

message 164: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Just another fricking reboot, Janet.

message 165: by Guy (new)

Guy Portman Janet wrote: "Has anyone seen Mad Max Fury? Picked up a load of Oscars last night."

Yes, I have Janet. It's a reboot, but the costumes, scenery and effects are fantastic.

message 166: by Amber (last edited Feb 29, 2016 10:30AM) (new)

Amber Martingale IF you like watching dystopian psychopaths go at each other.

pics&books Janet wrote: "Has anyone seen Mad Max Fury? Picked up a load of Oscars last night."

I saw it...the special effects and the costumes were great! so was the cinematography. I generally stay aways from movies like that, but it kept me interested and, a few times, even on the edge of my seat. Tom Hardy is great!!!

message 168: by Janet (new)

Janet I think I may go for it. It's available to watch on demand. Not my usual kind of thing but I watch more fantasy, sci fi etc than read. :)

Thanks guys!

message 169: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Each to their own, I guess.

message 170: by Amy (new)

Amy Just saw Deadpool last night. Awesome. So funny and one of the best Marvel movies to date. Excellent script and did it did the comic justice. No weak women, damsels in distress either. Ryan Reynolds at his comedic best.

message 171: by Sandysbookaday (new)

Sandysbookaday The Butterfly Room - good movie, well acted, kinda creepy.....

message 172: by Carolina (new)

Carolina Morales Sabrina

message 173: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss Carolina, I love the film Sabrina!!! The Audrey Hepburn version to be exact. I haven't seen the remake. Which one did you watch? :)

message 174: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters The original is much better with Humphrey Bogart and William Holden.

Great film

message 175: by pics&books (new)

pics&books Sandy *The world could end while I was reading and I would never notice* wrote: "The Butterfly Room - good movie, well acted, kinda creepy....."

i want to see that and after your review, it's a MUST SEE!

I saw Room last week. I read the book and was afraid that the movie wouldn't keep the integrity of the story but the author of book also wrote the screenplay so no worries there. The acting was superb. I recommend it.

message 176: by Melissa (new)

Melissa The Imitation Game

So good! Takes place during WWII.

message 177: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss I really want to see Room. I read the book a few years ago and loved it. I was really rooting for Brie Larson to win the Oscar and I'm so glad she did! Jacob Tremblay, who plays Jack in the film, looks like he does an outstanding job. He seems like such a sweet and funny kid. He's adorable.

Jacob Tremblay was awesome in the role of Jack - he was every bit of the book character. ANd I agree - so glad that Brie Larson won for the part of Ma. She was a perfect choice for that role. The movie is as good as the book - Emma Donahue wrote the screenplay.

message 179: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss I'm so glad to hear that! I'm definitely someone who is very critical of my favorite books being turned into movies. I really look forward to watching it! :)

i'm the same - my family call me "the movie snob" as i have, in the past, been very critical of movies, especially when books i love get 'trashed' by film makers.

message 181: by Chris (last edited Mar 03, 2016 01:43PM) (new)

Chris Hi everyone, I recently watched The Witch. A limited-release indie film starring some minor actors from Game of Thrones. I didn't care for it much but it was certainly a period piece. Fantastic attention to the 1600's and a throwback to classic cult fairytale movies like Company of Wolves. I also saw The Revenant which I thought was truly amazing. It strayed from the book's story, but in good ways that made it better adapted to film.

Betsy Hetzel Rebecca wrote: "I really want to see Room. I read the book a few years ago and loved it. I was really rooting for Brie Larson to win the Oscar and I'm so glad she did! Jacob Tremblay, who plays Jack in the film, l..."
I loved the book ROOM, I loved the movie, and I loved Ma and Jack !! I'm glad that the first hour of the movie centered on the "room", and , IMO, the movie captured the feeling of the space and the relationship between the Ma and Jack. Old Nick's presence was secondary, just like in the book, and the small sexual part was not graphic. Ma teaching Jack to escape really got my attention!! He was awesome!
The 2nd hour was the world and I found it interesting that Ma had a much more difficult time adjusting than Jack. Ah, the resilience of children. Brie Larson, IMO, deserved her Oscar!

message 183: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss Betsy, that's great to hear! You've made me want to see the movie even more! :) I agree the book was wonderful. I loved that Jack was the narrator. That made it even better. Emma Donoghue did a great job capturing a five year olds voice without making it too cliche or hokey. The movie looks great and the performances look amazing!

message 184: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss Watching Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother right now. Hilarious spoof starring Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman and Dom DeLuise. So silly and ridiculous but I love it. Especially when Gene, Madeline and Marty dance and sing to "the kangaroo hop" haha

omgosh - i saw that years ago! i loved madeline kahn - simultaneously happy and sad! hahaha!

we watched crimson peak this weekend - not too bad.

message 186: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Amiss I love Madeline Kahn too! One of my all time favorites!! She's great in that movie! :)

message 187: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters Watched Spectre tonight.

2.21 hours but action packed and fast paced

message 188: by Amy (last edited Mar 09, 2016 02:03PM) (new)

Amy I am behind a movie for the Bond films, Sean! Maybe I'll catch up tonight and watch them both. Samuel said it was quite good as well, if I remember correctly.

Just watched Still Alice recently. After reading the book a couple of months ago, it fell a little flat for me. I can't say why I felt this way, honestly. I did think it was well acted. I couldn't wait to see it , but was slightly disappointed. Maybe because it was done differently at times than the novel. I felt they could have done everything the exact same, without much length added, because it was a short and quick book.
Still a good movie though. Just another case where the book was much better in capturing the emotion and empathy. Lately, I have felt movies have been living up to the books so maybe that was my disappointment.

message 189: by Grace (new)

Grace Tenkay Watched The Revenant and while the bear fight was spectacular I found the movie overall fairly predictable and ordinary. And the ending was pretty obvious.

message 190: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters The bear part was fantastic, but I found it overlong and slow, but well acted

message 191: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters I guess one thing about being off sick, try to catch on some films .

Watched today.

Black Mass, never liked Jonny Depp, but I liked him in this roles.

A true story.

Quite a good film, although a little slow, but good story

message 192: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters Guadalcanal Diary (1943)

Watched this afternoon, a great war film, made during the war with a great cast

LLoyd Nolan, Anthony Quinn, William Bendix, Lionel Stander, Richard Conte and a very young Richard Jaeckal.

message 193: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale My favorite movies about WWII remain Tora!Tora!Tora! and The Longest Day, Sean.

message 194: by Nicki (new)

Nicki Watched Moster Hunter last night, thought it wss going to be just another naff b- movie but it was quite good, very good ending.

message 195: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Quarrell Not heard of Moster Hunter, will have a look. Watched Bridge of Spies last night. Tom Hanks is convincing in every role he plays. Although I am aware certain parts of the film were included for dramatic effect, rather than being strictly biographical, I thought it was a good film.

message 196: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters Watched this afternoon

Son Of A Gun- 2014

Quite a good thriller with Ewan McGregor, and the first time I have seen Alicia Vikander in a film, now look how well she is doing !

Based on a true story..

Amber, loads of great war films I could mention, but the best to me is

"The Great Escape", love the cast of "The Longest Day, and also "The Bridge on The River Kwai", other greats "The Hill", The Long, The Short and the Tall".

message 197: by Amber (last edited Mar 12, 2016 10:43AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Sean, I enjoy The Great Escape and Bridge on the River Kwai when I see them but they aren't my favorites. My main reason for liking Kwai is Sir Alec Guinness.

message 198: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I watched THE MARTIAN last night. I really enjoyed it and loved Matt Damon's portrayal. However... it seems they skipped several ways Mars could have killed Mr Watney.

Better than Saving Private Ryan in that it didn't cause D-Day survivors to puke their guts out at the end of the movie from the damned flashbacks.
