Zoe You can't judge a novel the way you would non-fiction. The Fake is about the experience of dealing with someone who has a lot of BPD traits, but also traits of several other possible mental health issues, by two people who are experiencing it for the first time and who have no expertise. You can't pause a narrative from a particular point of view to give an awkward treatise or moment of expository edutainment, that's not the job, nor is it art.

Hello Zoe! It's a pleasure when the writer answers your review :)

I'm sorry you took my review so negatively. This being said, Shelby does text Gibson after reading books and tries to put a diagnosis on Cammie. The words coming through are "borderline? narcissist?"

It has been proven that culture/fiction does stigmatize people with mental health issues. While Cammie is a villain (whether she has BPD or not is not the issue. She's a textbook villain), Shelby trying to diagnose her with borderline or narcissism completes the picture of the "crazy woman" that has long been depicted by culture about women with mental illness.

Most people don't understand personality disorders. I keep my point: if you don't understand the complexities of a personality disorder, you shouldn't write a character with one. I'm not saying you don't, but in the novel, it came through like this: Cammie has a personality disorder; hence, she is a bad person.

I'd be more than happy to discuss this more with you in private if you want! Your book is great. The narrative is good. I just didn't like this aspect of it. :)

Have a nice day!
