Patti (baconater) I seem to be in a rut of three and four star books lately. The most recent five star I recall is A Man Called Ove.

What was your's?

Patti (baconater) Tell a lie. I also gave The Fifth Child five stars not long ago.

It's a great story, if you read it, then I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

I've downloaded it and have read the first few pages. Gripped already but I have to put it down now to make dinner. Argh!

I recall you mentioning that elsewhere. You think it's something I'd like?

Her other book Salt to the sea is along the same lines, but based in Germany. It's very good too. I gave that one a 5* rating as well.

Ask Dave, he knows you better, and whilst I have the paperback somewhere, I read it on the kindle :-)
So he will surely know it

Patti (baconater) Oh, that looks brilliant, Will!

Rosemary! Talking dogs are awesome! Even Spider Robinson did them!

message 16: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones All of my dogs talk, Rosemary. I'm sure that Jim would agree with me there

to be fair, some just look down their noses at you waiting for you to do something that proves to them you're sentient and worth talking to

It was new to me, and suddenly popped up on a Kindle recommendation to me from Ammy. Loved it.

David Staniforth I've read a few lately that have been almost, but not quite, five star.

The last one that was easily a five star read for me was The Secrets She Keeps The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham by Michael Robotham.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ My last five star reads were:

The Books of Pellinor (The Gift is the first one and there are four in the series.) It's a bit of a YA epic saga type thing but not too young, if that makes sense.

I also gave Kicking the Bucket List 5 stars.

And the first couple in the DCI Ryan series (Holy Island is the first one) were five stars as well. The later ones have been 4-4.5 stars so far :)

The best sci-fi defines us as humans. DM makes you think about what you take for granted that may be the most important thing in life. Completely agree 5-stars.

message 31: by John (new)

John Matsui I'd like to add Terry Hayes' thriller, I Am Pilgrim. A hell of a whodunit.

Agree back, another fab read.

Patti (baconater) This may be the best thread in the group in ages.

Expensive, but great. :)

message 34: by Keith (new)

Keith Adamson My last 5 star was "Burnt Shadows" by Kamila Shamsie. A book with a breathtaking scope, starting in Hiroshima and ending in Guantanamo Bay - but don't be put off it you think that's too much; because the main character is so appealing and the pace is so amazing.

message 35: by Lee (last edited Sep 30, 2017 07:14AM) (new)

Lee Sherred Hmm, that's a difficult one. I think it was this:

Dear Mom: A Sniper's Vietnam

/book/show/9...

The memoirs of Joseph T Ward, a US Marine Scout Sniper, during the Vietnam war. Very good...if you like that sort of thing?

message 36: by Tim (new)

Tim Just gave 5 stars to We Are Legion (We Are Bob) We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse, #1) by Dennis E. Taylor

Its about a guy (called Bob) who signs up to one of those places that cryogenically freeze your head when you die. Then 100 years later he wakes up to discover that he's now a computer program, and he's about to become the controlling AI for the Earth's first interstellar space probe . . .

Very innovative, and quite amusing / sad / poignant in places.

Patti (baconater) Ill add that to my TBR Tim. Thanks!

message 38: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones It's on my TBR too.

message 39: by David (new)

David Hadley Will wrote: "It's on my TBR too."

And mine.

✿C±ô²¹¾±°ù±ð✿ I've just reread Steve Robinson's Jefferson Tayte books, several of them were 5 stars for me :) and the others weren't far off. Now onto the last one in the series!

message 41: by Tim (new)

Tim I loved the last JT book even more than the others :)

message 42: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Cognard Ready Player One.
Really should not be five stars except God I love the 80s.

Patti (baconater) Apparently, we're going to have an 80s progressive cocktail party here next term.

I'll need to purchase sweat pads and shoulder bands.

Or something.

message 44: by Joseph (last edited Oct 07, 2017 08:10AM) (new)

Joseph Cognard I still got my Members Only Jacket and Swatch in the attic ust waiting for the signal.

Patti (baconater) Turquoise parachute pants. Huge orange plastic earrings.

Frikken enormous hair, which isn't a problem. All I need is a bit of humidity.

message 46: by Joseph (new)

Bacsically the book covered every single thig I did in 80s

Loved that book, & Wil Wheaton narrates the Audible version, which is even more awesome. There's a movie coming next year too (trailer on YouTube, but it tells you nothing of the story)

message 49: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones Yes, I loved Ready Player One too. Great premise.

Patti (baconater) Stephen Spielberg is directing the movie of it. Comes out in 2018, apparently.

I've downloaded it. May even read it this year.
