Actually, the writing style and themes are very similar. I suspect, though, that you're right that she didn't go directly from "Watchman" to "Mockingbird." I am sure there are a dozen half-edited manuscripts in between them that show the progression from one to the other more clearly. :)
Cassondra, I think you've hit it on the head. I thought that I'd heard long ago that Watchman was a first attempt and editors told her that she needed something more engaging.
If Ms. Lee wanted it published, I would think that she would have gone through and edited the bits that refer directly to Mockingbird so that they mesh (the circumstances of the 'rape' and the outcome of the trial).
