84913 I really enjoyed this book. I love how the author balances the real history of NYC and early 20th-century immigration with the Jewish and Middle Eastern mythologies. The contrast between the two main characters was interesting, the way the Golum started out as a pushover and had to learn to stand up for herself, and the Jinni started out selfish and had to learn to be more considerate. Very atmospheric and moving.
84913 I feel a bit bad about recommending this one as I seem to have been the only reader who liked it. It seems I like things a bit on the darker side.
I'm looking forward to next month's read. It will be a reread for me and I did enjoy it the first time around (hope that doesn't turn everyone else off!)
84913 I think I recommended this one. It's a bit of a classic of the Fairy Tale Retelling genre, and it must have been pretty shocking when it first came out in the 1970s. My favourites are the main story "The Bloody Chamber" and the Puss In Boots story (he's quite the character). I also liked "The Courtship of Mr. Lyon" and "The Company of Wolves". My least favourite is "The Snow Child".
84913 I read the whole series last month and I loved it. The first book was a little slow to start, but once the story gets going, I was hooked. Vasya is such a great character and the mingling of history and mythology made for a magical mix.
