There was a crooked man
and he went a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence
beside a crooked stile.
He had a crooked cat
which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together
in a little crooked house.
Crooked House is a stand-alone novel. I.e. it does not feature any of Christie's established sleuths (Marple, Poirot, Tommy & Tuppence, etc.).
The story tells of a young couple, Charles and Sophia, who decide to postpone any decisions on getting married until after the war. Once the time has come ...more

2023 Re-read
Unusually, I remembered whodunit but my memory had gaping holes regarding the why and how. I had forgotten just enough to make the re-reading process enjoyable. It has been 7 years since I first read it, so not surprising.
Christie seems to have had a fondness for nursery rhymes and basing books on them. She regarded this book as one of her best. As she notes in the introduction, however, readers may not concur with the author. I think I liked this book better the second time around, ...more

This is at least the third time I've read this mystery, and this time around I was able to, really, see all of the clues, hints and traps for the unwary that Christie laid for the reader. She was absolutely messing with us through most of the book.

Yup, still one of my absolute favorites. Great twist, entertaining cast of characters, and typical Christie charm. :)

"Crooked House" is the first Agatha Christie standalone novel I've read. I've been pleasantly surprised by how fresh and simple the humour in this book is. The writing feels relaxed and confident as if Agatha Christie is enjoying the people she's writing about rather than working to set up a plot.
Although there is a murder driving the plot of "Crooked House" the book is really an examination of how a rather strange, very rich Leonides family live together and how they see themselves and each ot ...more

Love those shocking Agatha Christie endings. She really was the master of mysteries.
