So, I thought this book was very okay-ish until I stumbled across this review, and uhhhh.........

So, I thought this book was very okay-ish until I stumbled across this review, and uhhhh.........
Yeah so what the fuck was that weird interview? The author really did base his feel-good cutesy novel about looking past each other's differences on Canada's cultural genocide of Indigenous people? He really based this off of the sixties' scoop, in which Indigenous children were stolen from their families? He based this off of residential schools? THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS AND THE SIXTIES' SCOOP WERE CULTURAL GENOCIDE. REAL PEOPLE WERE TRAUMATIZED, SOME OF WHOM ARE STILL ALIVE TODAY. The residential schools involved forced conversion, abuse, and medical experimentation (I didn't know about that last one until I looked it up for this review, actually. Man). These were real kids being hurt, and I cannot stress that enough. Apparently the author said in a podcast or something that he didn't feel comfortable co-opting the history for his story so he wrote a fantasy inspired by it instead, and I genuinely don't understand that. If he was going to write about this at all, writing it as a cutesy fantasy novel defanged it. Instead of actually getting into the horrors that happened under colonialism, he writes a cute, happy fantasy about learning to love! And individuality in a harsh world! And found family! With an almost all-white cast (oops)! This honestly comes off as more appropriatory than if he had just written a book set in a residential school. I understand not wanting to write about something like this in case the story comes off as insensitive, but in that case, DON'T WRITE ABOUT IT. Don't package it up with a nice little fantasy bow and whitewash the whole thing. I doubt the author had bad intentions, but it just comes off as tonedeaf to me.

I already was kind of eh on the book because I thought it was a pretty shallow portrayal of discrimination, and I'm kind of past the age where I think I really would have liked this. But finding out about the inspiration for this novel makes it way worse. ...more

Absolutely marvelous and heart-warming!!! It's been a while since I last read something this delightful and lovely. Going through "The House in the Cerulean Sea" felt like a hot bath and curling up in a cozy bed, after being soaked in cold rain. The story is so simple, easy-to-guess even, but enough to lighten my day and bring joy upon
