I read a few one-star reviews of this that lambasted the book and author for being a racist, horrible piece of trash. I couldn't disagree more. Were there some pretty shocking and degrading ideas about black people and their ability to become full citizens and function in society? Of course. I have no doubt that there were scores of people all over the country thinking that way in the fifties and sixties, and let's face it, there still are.

I was disappointed that this book was not what I was looking forward to read. Scout (known as Jean Louise) leaves NYC and returns to back to Maycomb, where she is engaged in some undefined career-girl enterprise. For the first few chapters, she is avoiding her 'lowborn' but well-meaning suitor, Henry Clinton; also fighting aunt Alexandra wearing her medieval corset.
