I really, really liked this book!
I found it to be a bit slow at times, but it was like when you know something major is going to happen soon and you're just sitting on pins and needles waiting for it. I love the characters and I can't wait to get deeper into them and this world in book 2 soon! ...more

I wanted to love it but sadly, I didn't. This does not mean that I don't like it and won't continue cause I definitely will be. The problem with marketing and over hyped any things, is the expectation becomes super high. Why this book, why this author? You just wonder how they choose what they think they will be the next big thing and if its all just manipulation. That opinion aside, I had pros and cons with this story.

When I picked up this much-hyped novel, I was slightly worried that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. I am pleased to say that my concerns were unfounded and this book is incredible. So incredible, in fact, that I barely know where to start.
The thing that stands out the most, is the detail Shannon pours into this book. The world building, in particular is mesmerising. There is a lot of information to get to grips with here, especially at the beginning, but I didn’t find this to be a proble ...more

First thing you need to know is you should really get the audiobook for this one. Because the actress doing the reading has an absolutely gorgeous voice. She doesn't do a whole lot of different voices, but there are subtle shifts and her voice is just gorgeous. So there's that.
The other thing is, this book has been hyped up as the Next Big Thing, and like most cases, I'm pretty sure it's a premature assumption. As an alternative history novel, and the first in a series, it does really well. Ther ...more

LOVED this book! Such a great story that I was left with that sad feeling of not knowing what to do next upon reading the last page. Very well written, incredibly imaginative and a complete adventure! I can't wait for the next book to come out!

This is not a book for the faint of heart. Even describing it is difficult since it lies in that space between high fantasy and dystopian fiction. For more details, I will let you read the one in the book jacket.
As for my opinion on the book itself, if I had to choose one word it would be complex. This is the beginning of an EPIC fantasy ride and you have to pay attention throughout otherwise you will be floundering, unable to discern what is happening. You will also need a dictionary and use of ...more

While I read several reviews stating that there was too much fluff & useless information about the setting & backstory, I tend to disagree with this statement. However, I believe if I had read this as opposed to listen to it via audible I think I would have agreed. But for an audio book I think this helps in building the world & setting; the readers accent lended to the dialect of protagonist. The narrative is your typical dystopian fantasy, but diverts from your traditional cast of paranormal c
