I alternately loved and hated this book. The beginning is wonderful. The end is satisfyingly. The middle is MADDENING.
For instance, I could not stand the repetition of phrases and events. I get that some are from alternate POV, but sometimes, often, the same POV, and that is just not necessary. The lists of trees and birds and snakes I could do without. Or maybe just one? Or two? Not every paragraph. I did not enjoy the jumping back and forth in time and POV, because it reinforced the repetiton ...more

At first, The Underneath appears to be simple children's story about an abandoned calico cat and her two kittens, however, this is a multi-layered, lyrical story, that explores themes of family, choosing love over hate and resentment, and the consequences of promises and betrayal.
