Bieng a fan of Hemingway and of his beautiful book "A Moveable Feast" I was intrigued by this book. I did not expect it to be such a masterpiece as A Moveable Feast is, but I also did not expect it to be so flat. The prose has no dynamic movement, the author seems to sometimes try a Hemingway-inspired sort of style, which does not work at all. The characters are not well developed. This book really began my current obsession with Ernest Hemingway. I had been forced to read "A Farewell to Arms" in high school and thought Hemingway was a creeper. Then when I picked up this book I became intrigued by the cultural influences of the artistic clique in Paris in the 20's and realized there was more to this guy than my adolescent brain could comprehend.
