What Members Thought

This is my second Ellen Hopkins book, and I enjoyed it. However I was waiting for the Rumble to happen for so long and it literally didn't happen till like the last 10 pages of the book.
There was definitely some character development I feel like Matt grew as a character but not by a whole lot. I didn't like Matt's parents I feel like they weren't excepting and didn't love their sons like they should've. Matt did a really good job of taking care of himself though.

This is my first attempt at reading Ellen Hopkins. She writes in like a poetic form. You have to get used to her style. The book was fast paced and dealt with lots of mature topics like suicide, gay, adultery, and teenage sex.

I gave this book three stars because I did enjoy reading it, but it was totally different than what I anticipated. I wouldn't read this book a second or third time either. The plot kept me engaged, but I expected more of a resolution. I was hoping for the protagonist, Matt, to wrestle more in his psyche with atheism vs. theism. I was really excited to see Hopkins write a book with a male protagonist who was really relatable. But I had a rough time connecting with Matt at some points in the book.

Yeah this book was super disappointed. I really had a hard time appreciating the free verse because it was totally under utilized. I would have rather read this as a normal novel. Also, for a book that is about religion, the ending seemed to make no sense to me and was kind of unexciting, mostly confusing. I did really like the characters of Alex, and sometimes Matt. I would recommend this book only because some of the points about banned books, suicide, and religion are super interesting.
