What Members Thought

I really struggled with rating this one. Although I was never bored, I also wasn't ever really engaged. There was something about it that just didn't work for me but I can't completely put my finger on what it is. The writing was fine, nothing fabulous, but fine. The characters were deliciously flawed but never really came alive to me. Maybe my expectations were too high based on the attention it's been getting but I just don't think this one quite lives up to the hype.

My  in a nutshell summary...
Friends are at a wedding and on the drive home incur a horrible tragedy that impacts their lives forever.
My thoughts after reading...
Hmmm...this was a wonderfully character driven delight of a book...once you get past the initial tragedy. Â Lots of mixed up quirky characters all dealing with the aftermath of this accident. Â Lives are altered forever...those involved are haunted by this accident that occurred years earlier in the middle of th ...more

Wonderful book chronicling the nitty-gritty lives of three siblings following a car accident. I loved this book for its down to earth, realistic portrayal of the ups and downs of every day life. There are no quick fixes, the characters are flawed but very well developed, this could be anyone I know. A deeply satisfying read, the only disappointment is that it's over.

I started this book on audio and finished it on paper since I had to travel for work. Anshaw covers the gambit in this book about a dysfunctional family that begins with a wedding and the death of a young girl. Anshaw really captures that even amidst the dysfunction, family is not only important, but necessary.

I was eagerly anticipating this book, but it was just okay. The writing is fine, nothing spectacular, but the characters' voices seemed too flat and undifferentiated to me. And although the author tells us many times about the impact that the precipitating event had on the characters' lives, we don't really see it.
