This is the story of a love derailed by WWII and other circumstances. The story is set in WWII England...Stevie (short for Stephanie) meets Michael at Michael's father's dairy and they fall madly in love. Michael is soon shipped off to the war, not knowing he has left Stevie pregnant. Fate dictates that Michael is not killed but a series of events keeps him from returning to Stevie until well after the war, and in the meantime Stevie has married someone else and is raising her child as her husband's. The story is told from the different points of view of Stevie and Michael in the present day, as Stevie is coping with widowhood and being an elderly lady, and Michael is close to death in a hospital in London, and coincidentally being cared for by his own granddaughter. He is aware of this, but she is not... The book is sad, funny and amazing and a real testament to how events beyond our control and can shape our destinies.
