I was deeply impressed by this first book in the series. It most certainly stands well by itself, while leaving the reader with a desire for more of this futuristic, dystopian reality. Though it took me a while to get used to the first person present-tense perspective, which deeply annoyed me at first, the plot and depth was such that I -did- eventually get over it and was able to immerse myself in the solid imagery and rapid pacing.

Every year, Panem must face the Hunger Games; each district must offer up one boy and one girl, making 24 in all, to fight to the death on television. Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place... and enters the fight of her life.
This book was ok. I got bored a few times, but was mostly pulled into the story. The way that the author described characters and setting was really good, and I found it easy to understand what the author was trying to convey.
